Android 7.1 Nougat update rolling out to the Galaxy J5 (2016) in India

The Galaxy J7 (2016) was updated to Android 7.0 Nougat in India almost two months ago, and we had assumed at the time that the update would also be offered to the Galaxy J5 (2016). It looks like that wasn’t the case, as Samsung is only now rolling out Nougat to the device in the country. It seems that to make up for the delay, the Korean giant has released Android 7.1 Nougat, along with Samsung Experience 8.5 UX (which debuted on the Note 8), for the J5.

Nougat arrives on the Galaxy J5 (2016)… for real this time

This is a surprising development – Samsung doesn’t usually release different versions of the OS for devices in the same lineup, especially those that go on sale alongside each other. It’s certainly a good thing for Galaxy J5 (2016) owners, although our reader who sent in the tip says that the phone app is continuously crashing after the update. We’re guessing that’s going to be an exception rather than the norm, though, or Samsung may just have to pull the update and make J5 (2016) owners wait even longer for a version of the operating system that’s more than a year old at this point.

Android 7.1 Nougat update rolling out to the Galaxy J5 (2016) in India

What about Galaxy J7 (2016) users? Hopefully, they will also be treated to Android 7.1 and Samsung Experience 8.5. The J5 (2016) and J7 (2016) aren’t expected to be upgraded to Oreo, which would mean leaving the J7 (2016) on software older than the J5 would be unfair and result in quite a few unsatisfied consumers. Well, unless Samsung is changing policies and will start providing more than one major software update to budget devices.

If you own a Galaxy J5 (2016), you can check if the update is available by going to the Settings » About phone menu and hitting Download updates manually. Received the update on your phone already? Let us know by leaving a comment, and check out these screenshots to see how Nougat will look on the device (the overall interface should be similar, even if the screenshots are from Android 7.0 Nougat and the Samsung Experience 8.1 UX).

Thanks, Chirag!

What’s New With Android 8.0 Oreo Part 11: New clock styles for the Always-On Display

Samsung has today released the second build of its Android 8.0 Oreo beta for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ in the United Kingdom–and, among other things, it transports a number of new clock styles for the Always-On Display (AOD).

Before we dive into them, however, we’d like to take a second to remind you that we’ve detailed all of the changes included in the first build as part of our brand new What’s New With Android 8.0 Oreo series, so be sure to check it out.

The new clock styles come in all shapes and sizes

Now for the part you’ve all been waiting for: the new clock styles come in all shapes and sizes (pictured below), and best of all, they’re customizable, in the sense that you can alter the color they adopt on both the AOD and Lock Screen.

We’re still toying around with the new offerings and will be sure to update this post if we discover any drastic new features tucked away in the Clock Styles hub, which can be accessed by opening up Settings, followed Lock Screen and Security.

Galaxy Note 8 Tip: You can lock the screen orientation to landscape

Tablets have always allowed one to lock the screen orientation to either portrait or landscape, but the latter has not been possible on smartphones, at least not those made by Samsung. But did you know the ability to lock screen orientation to landscape is available on the Galaxy Note 8, and any device that runs the Samsung Experience 8.5 or newer interface?

That’s right: You can finally use your Samsung phone in landscape mode and not have to deal with the orientation flipping back to portrait just because you turn the phone just a tad sideways. Again, this feature is only available on Samsung devices running at least Samsung Experience 8.5; it will be present on newer versions as well, including Samsung Experience 9.0 that will debut on Android 8.0 Oreo.

So, how does one lock screen orientation to landscape on the Galaxy Note 8 and other Samsung phones? Just follow the steps below to see how it’s done.

How to lock screen orientation to landscape on the Galaxy Note 8

Step 1: Access the notification shade by swiping down from the top of the screen, then swipe again to access the quick toggles.

Step 2: Here, tap the screen rotation toggle repeatedly till it says Auto Rotate

Step 3: Then, rotate the phone to make the screen flip to landscape orientation. Then, bring up the toggles again and tap the screen rotation toggle till it says Landscape.

That’s it. Your phone’s screen will now continue to work in landscape mode (at least in apps and menus that support it; the home screen, for example, only works in portrait) until you re-enable auto rotation, turn the phone to portrait orientation, then tap the rotation toggle in the notification shade till it says Portrait.

Check out other Galaxy Note 8 tips to make the most of your phone, and let us know if you run into any issues so we can help get you back on track.

Second Galaxy S8 Android 8.0 Oreo beta firmware released

It has been a week since the Galaxy S8 Android 8.0 Oreo beta was released. Samsung has launched the beta in the United States, United Kingdom and South Korea in the first phase. Samsung today rolled out the second beta firmware for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+.

The second beta firmware update with version number G950FXXU1ZQK4 is now being rolled out by Samsung. It has been rolled out in the United Kingdom already and will also go live in other supported markets soon.

Second Galaxy S8 Android 8.0 beta firmware

The changelog of the second Galaxy S8 Android 8.0 Oreo beta firmware reveals that it brings the October security patch and improves the stability of DeX mode. The changelog also mentions that the stability of the Launcher has been improved as well.

There are new clock styles for the lock screen and Always On Display. Users can now adjust the transparency of notifications to get their desired look. Smart View gets smarter by allowing the handset’s screen to go dark when it’s mirroring between the phone and TV.

A plethora of bug fixes are also included in this beta release. Interestingly, even though the changelog says that it has the October security patch, the Software Information section mentions the September patch. It just might be a clerical mistake.

Samsung is yet to confirm when the second phase of the beta program will begin. That’s when the Galaxy S8 Android 8.0 Oreo beta is expected to be released in markets like India.

Do check out our What’s New With Oreo series to find out everything about the new OS update.

Samsung’s working on a full-screen compact smartphone, says tipster

Samsung’s working on a full-screen compact smartphone, according to esteemed tipster Ice Universe; however, there’s no guarantee that the handset, which is rumored to tout a sub-5-inch Infinity Display, will actually hit the shelves.

Ice Universe wasn’t able to confirm the identity of the unit, but we think it’s safe to rule out the upcoming Galaxy A5 (2018) and Galaxy A7 (2018), because they’re tipped to feature a 5.5-inch and 5.7-inch Infinity Display, respectively.

Some believe that we could be looking at the Galaxy S9 Mini, although that’s a bit of a far-fetched assumption, seeing as Samsung decided against releasing a Mini variant of this year’s Galaxy S8. That’s not to say it isn’t possible, though.

What do you think?

For now, we’re going to reserve judgment. We’d love to know what you think. Could this be the Galaxy S9 Mini? Or maybe even the elusive Galaxy A3 (2018)? Be sure to drop a comment in the section below–or send us a message on Twitter.

Galaxy A7 (2018) release near as it sails through the FCC

We’ve been seeing a lot of reports about the Galaxy A5 (2018) and Galaxy A7 (2018) recently. Samsung is expected to unveil its new Galaxy A (2018) series in a couple of months. It appears that the Galaxy A7 (2018) release may not be that far off, given that the device has now sailed through the FCC.

Samsung announced the Galaxy A (2017) series in January earlier this year. It’s likely that the successor might also be unveiled in January. It won’t be a long wait given that it’s just a couple of months away.

Galaxy A7 (2018) release

We’ve previously reported that the Galaxy A7 (2018) is going to be powered by Samsung’s Exynos 7885 processor. It’s the 10nm version of the Exynos 7880. We can expect a performance bump with increased battery efficiency. The Galaxy A5 and A7 (2018) will both feature an Infinity Display as well.

It also was confirmed recently that the Exynos 7885 will support Bluetooth 5.0. This means that Bluetooth 5.0 is coming to Samsung’s mid-range lineup. The Galaxy S8 flagship was actually the first smartphone on the market this year with Bluetooth 5.0.

We’ve spotted the FCC listing for the Galaxy A7 (2018) today. The filing for SM-A730F has sailed through the Federal Communications Commission. This step is normally taken as an indication of an impending launch, even though it’s not an explicit confirmation of anything.

The Galaxy A3 (2018) has been missing from recent reports about the upcoming series. Whether or not the base model will be axed from the new lineup remains to be seen.
