Daily Deal: Take 10% off an OtterBox Commuter Series case for the Galaxy S8

Amazon has slashed 10% off the price of OtterBox’s slim Commuter Series case for the Galaxy S8, meaning you can currently pick one up for $35.99. What’s unique about this particular cover is that it has a dual-layer construction; the soft inner and hard outer layer work together to absorb and deflect impacts.

If you like the sound of the Commuter Series case for the Galaxy S8 and want to bag yourself one, hit the Buy Now button below. We advise you to hurry, though, as Amazon only has a very limited amount of inventory available for this specific deal — and once it’s gone, it’s gone.

Samsung highlights the key features of its memory cards

If you’re shopping for accessories for your new smartphone, chances are you’re going to pick up a microSD memory card first before you buy anything else. Even though most handsets come with a decent amount of internal storage, the fact that most of us consume so much content on our smartphones leaves us all wanting for more storage.

Customers tend to prefer high-capacity memory cards and companies are adapting to provide them with the maximum possible storage in the microSD format. Research firm IHS forecasts that the total GB of memory card space sold in the market will more than double in three years.

Samsung is a market leader in memory cards, you can often get great deals on its memory cards, and it has now published a new infographic to showcase the key features of its products. Samsung’s EVO Plus range of memory cards promise read/write speeds of up to 100/90 MB/s. At this rate, you can transfer a 3GB 4K video from a PC to the card in just 46 seconds.

The company’s memory cards are compatible with a wide range of devices including but not limited to smartphones, DSLR cameras, 4K action cameras, drones, 360-degree cameras and more.

Telus flips the switch on quad-band LTE-A for Galaxy S8

Telus, one of the largest mobile carriers in Canada, has released a new software update for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. Aside from bug fixes and network enhancements, the update also brings support for the carrier’s quad-band LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) service. The service is going to provide significantly faster mobile data speeds to the carrier’s subscribers.

Samsung’s new flagship smartphone has a gigabit LTE chip so it can theoretically hit gigabit speeds as well but it going to be a while before data networks hit gigabit speeds for the public. LTE-A is the next best thing now and Telus subscribers can expect to hit theoretical download speeds of up to 750 Megabits per second.

A representative for Telus pointed out in a statement that Telus is “the first network in North America capable of delivering quad-band LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) service on the Samsung Galaxy S8.” In real world scenarios, the carrier’s subscribers will see speeds between 22 to 174Mbps.

It’s not the only carrier in Canada with a quad-band LTE-A service. Bell has also confirmed support for quad-band LTE-A, however, it hasn’t released a software update at this point in time which enables the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ to tap into the faster data network.

Check out this collection of Samsung Display’s latest design patents

Patently Mobile has published a collection of Samsung Display’s latest design patents to be approved by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). While they don’t reveal any specific details about the products the firm is working on, they do give us a clear insight into the different designs it’s toying with. As usual, though, nothing is confirmed — so if you see something you like, don’t get your hopes up as there’s a pretty good chance it’ll never make its way onto the market.

In total, we’re catching a glimpse of five design patents: the first two showcase a smartphone and tablet with a stretchable display, the third appears to be a fold-out handset, the fourth looks like a ‘stretchable’ screen and the fifth… Well, we can’t even begin to fathom what it is. It looks like an hourglass-shaped panel, though we’re not entirely sure how that would fit into our day-to-day lives. Maybe it was submitted to throw us off our game? Who knows.

Galaxy S8 Pirates of the Caribbean edition goes on sale in China

It was first reported three weeks ago that Samsung had teamed up with Disney to create the Pirates of the Caribbean edition of the Galaxy S8. It was apparently just a limited edition case for the Galaxy S8 which came in a unique box that also included a faux gold ring. We now know exactly what the Pirates of the Caribbean edition is and how much it costs.

There’s nothing different about the handset itself. This is the same Galaxy S8 that has been out since April 21 so you don’t need to worry about your brand new device being outdated just yet.

What it does come with is a box that looks like a treasure chest. It has the Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales theme on it. You’ll find the normal retail box of the Galaxy S8 inside the chest. There’s a faux gold phone ring holder in the chest alongside the limited edition case.

You can see that this isn’t like the Galaxy S6 edge Iron Man edition which not only had the character’s color scheme but also a headshot of Iron Man on the back.

The Pirates of the Caribbean edition is no different from a normal Galaxy S8, it only comes in a special box that has a special case in it. Oh, and the phone has a custom Pirates of the Caribbean theme set as default.

Galaxy S8 Pirates of the Caribbean edition is now available for purchase in China via JD.com for CNY 5,988 or $880.

Samsung releases The Frame TV globally

Samsung today announced that it’s releasing The Frame TV globally. The roll out starts in Switzerland and Norway this week and will be expanded to other markets next week, including the United States, South Korea, Austria, Belgium, Germany and France.

To highlight the design of this television, and it’s all about design with this product, Samsung is going to hold a launch event at a museum or gallery in each country to properly showcase The Frame TV’s design and features.

Samsung’s The Frame TV lineup includes 55-inch and 65-inch models that offer an Art Mode feature. This feature enables the TV’s display to show exclusive works of art like paintings. Users can also display their personal photo libraries in Art Mode.

The TV itself offers UHD picture quality and doubles as a customizable work of art when it’s powered off. Users can choose from various frame options that go well with the ambiance and décor of any room. Frame options include Walnut, Oak and White.

It has a brightness sensor that adjusts to ambient lighting and blends the TV into the interior. The motion sensor detects movement and enables the power-saving mode when no one is in the room, it turns it back on when someone enters. Samsung’s No Gap Wall-mount and Invisible Connection enables the TV to be mounted on a wall like a picture frame or painting.

Pricing and availability will vary by market.

Bixby can now be used to send money in South Korea

A couple of days after it was reported that Samsung will likely delay the launch of Bixby in the United States, the company has announced that it has teamed up with three major banks in South Korea to enable customers to check their accounts and even make payments by simply giving voice commands to Bixby.

Bixby has been properly launched in South Korea only. The assistant’s voice command feature isn’t available anywhere else and Samsung is yet to confirm when it will arrive. Bixby is apparently having troubles understanding English language properly so Samsung has to fix that before it can roll out the assistant.

Galaxy S8 owners who have an account at Shinhan Bank, Woori Bank or KEB Hana Bank in South Korea can now use Bixby to check up on their accounts and make payments. Woori Bank customers can even make currency exchanges using Bixby.

This feature is linked with the Samsung Pay app and is secured using Samsung Pass. When a user commands Bixby to send money to one of their contacts, Bixby will automatically connect to Samsung Pay and ask for verification using the iris scanner.

It makes the entire process easy as users no longer have to launch their bank’s app and go through the entire process manually. Bixby does that for them automatically. It would be nice if this feature was included with Bixby when it rolls out in other markets, but who knows when that’s going to happen.
