Samsung pushes out August security update for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge in the United States

Following its rollout for the Galaxy Note 4 in Europe yesterday, Samsung has today started distributing this month’s security update to all unlocked variants of the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge located in the United States.

As noted in the official changelog, this upgrade is primarily aimed at addressing an issue that results in malware being installed on a handset if the SideSync application is activated before completing the Setup Wizard.

In typical OTA fashion, this release is being distributed in stages. To see if it’s ready for your device, simply follow the four steps listed below:

  1. Head into Settings.
  2. Select About Device.
  3. Tap on the heading entitled Software Update.
  4. Hit the Download Updates Manually button.

Alternatively, you can wait until you receive a push notification prompting you to install the update. However, it’s worth noting that you will only receive this alert if you have at least 50% of battery on your handset or it’s plugged into an outlet.

Samsung Cloud Together is a great new app to access cloud storage and lock sensitive images from one dashboard [APK]

We reported about a month ago that Samsung Cloud Together was in the pipeline and that this app might have something to do with cloud storage services. Samsung Cloud Together is now available for download and it works as advertised. It provides one dashboard to manage popular cloud storage services which include Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive and Dropbox, all of them are integrated with Cloud Together and you just need to sign in.

Once you’re signed in, you can access all of the files in any one of these services right from the dashboard. It will also indicate how much free storage is left in each of your cloud storage accounts. Transferring files between two services is as simple as drag-and-drop. Just select files in one service and drop them in the other, Cloud Together will take care of everything else. The dashboard also serves as a local file browser enabling you to access the local storage of your device.

The ability to lock images is one of the best features of Samsung Cloud Together. You can choose the images that you want to lock and secure them with the password. The images will not be unlocked until the password is entered and they will remain secured even in the native Gallery app, so you have the peace of mind that the images are protected even when Samsung Cloud Together is not being used.

One caveat I noticed while using Samsung Cloud Together is that the app feels slow right now. The lag is noticeable when it pulls in files from cloud storage services or unlocks a secure image. Hopefully, things will get better in future versions of this app. It’s very useful and I can certainly see myself using it on a daily basis. If you’re interested in checking it out click here to download the official APK for Samsung Cloud Together.

Galaxy S7 and S7 edge get update in India with Samsung Cloud, new gallery, and more

Samsung recently brought two new features from the Galaxy Note 7 to the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge through an update in Italy, and the company is now pushing out the same update to consumers in India. Both devices are getting an over-the-air update sized at around 150 MB; the update brings the Samsung Cloud service and also the new gallery that features face and object recognition.

The update also improves performance in games that utilize the Vulkan API and the response of the touch screen. Power consumption improvements are also on-board thanks to optimization to Smart Manager. A couple of bug fixes are included as well, with a fix for the flashlight/torch not working properly and for problematic cover recognition. These fixes weren’t present in the update for Italy, which means they do not affect all variants. Oh, and before we forget, the update also brings the security fixes for the month of July, bringing the security patch version up to August 1 on both the S7 and S7 edge.

Your Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 edge should be able to download the update when you hit the Download updates manually button in the Settings » About device menu. If you can wait, it should show up on its own in a day or two if your device is connected to a Wi-Fi network.

Samsung to provide 4×4 MIMO to telecommunication businesses in Q4 2016

Now that LTE is widespread in most of the developed markets, it’s now time for the next phase of evolution. 4×4 MIMO technology doubles the download and upload speeds, and it can be applied to existing LTE networks. A gigabyte worth of data can be downloaded in just 8 seconds using this technology. Now, Samsung is ready to provide 4×4 MIMO base station software.

According to a recent report from ETNews, Samsung will start providing 4×4 MIMO base station software that also supports 3-Band CA to various mobile carriers in Q4 2016. 4×4 MIMO doubles the speed of processing data by increasing the transmitting and receiving antennas from two to four. Competition is set to increase between cellular carriers once 4×4 MIMO arrives in the market.

Samsung details thirteen changes it has made in Tizen 2.4.0.4

The last major update that Samsung pushed out for the Tizen operating system (OS) was Version 2.4, which started rolling out for the Samsung Z1 back in January. Since then, a handful of minor stability updates have been distributed, but we haven’t seen a release that brings any new functionality to the OS. However, it looks like that’s all about to change as the South Korean company has taken to its official Tizen Community Forum to detail a truckload of changes that it’s bundled into the much-anticipated Version 2.4.0.4 upgrade that’s expected to start being pushed out next month.

Thirteen fantastic new features will be making their way to Tizen 2.4.0.4, but we have a sneaky suspicion that they’re all going welcomed with open arms seeing as they were created by the Research & Development team in response to the heaps of user feedback that Samsung receives from consumers on a daily basis. In my opinion, one of the best pieces of functionality that the firm has added is the facility to activate Outdoor Mode without having to unlock a device. All you have to do is pull down from the notification panel, then you’re good to go.

Fortunately, Samsung has provided a breakdown of all of the new features, together with a short description of what they do, and so that you don’t have to waste time surfing the Web to try and locate the pages where they’re is detailed, we’ve decided to include them in this post:

1. SMS Delivery Report

Time to stop wondering whether your SMS got delivered to your friend or your boss. With our new user suggested feature, you can easily enable SMS delivery reports in your phone settings. So sit back and relax – your message delivery report is on the way.

2. Battery Status Reminders

How often do we try to keep our phone battery over say 50% while leaving work because there’s a long evening ahead? And how often do we actually remember to do so? With our battery charge reminders, set customized reminders to get notifications when your phone battery reaches a certain level. Want to get reminded when the phone battery is at 30%? Don’t worry. We will notify you. Simple, isn’t it?

3. Outdoor Mode

This superb feature enables you to easily access the outdoor mode setting without having to even unlock your device! Since you can’t see much on your screen, you should get the option to change the display settings upfront, right? So, here it is.

4. Colorful Memos

Now add color to your memos and personalize them to a whole new level. Express your emotions, voice your mood and code your memos with our exciting new color options.

5. Variable Torch Intensity

Don’t have enough battery to use torch on full intensity? Don’t want to wake your roommate while looking for something using your phone torch? Simply change torch intensity according to your need.

6. Custom App Shortcuts on Lock Screen

Many of us said we do not like specific apps showing up on the lock screen, some of us don’t want any app to show up at all, while some of us want to choose our app shortcuts. Now, you can easily set what app shortcuts you would like to see or not on your lock screen. Simple. Sweet.

7. Option to ‘Select All’ in My Files

Want to move, share or delete all files on your device? Now this is possible with our new addition to quickly ‘select all’ files while performing a particular action.

8. Custom Ringtones

Don’t want to be a part of the crowd? Not being able to set your own custom ringtone? A very simple, upfront way to now add your own ringtone and personalize your phone to a whole new level! Isn’t it amazing?

9. Wider SMS Bubbles

Sometimes, the smallest of things can have a huge impact. This is one such thing. Thank you for suggesting this minute change that we are more than happy to fulfill. Now, there is better utilization of space in bubble view.

10. ‘Beauty Face’ Mode in Camera

Do you feel you’re not photogenic? Or want to tweak your photo a little before putting it up on social networks? Made easy with the beauty mode option in the camera app, look great always!

11. Block Unwanted Messages

Tired of those annoying messages sent by applications/service providers? Want to block numbers you consider spam? Now do so easily right from your message view!

12. ACL in SD Card

Have been trying to shift ACL to SD card to save up on internal memory? Or want to switch from internal storage to external storage and vice versa as per your convenience? Yes, of course you can. Simply move the ACL to your desired storage type.

13. Quick Memo

Note down a piece of text instantly from browser and save it in memo quickly to be checked later.

Samsung Z2 (Tizen) hands-on

The Samsung Z2 went official today, and at the announcement event, we were able to play around a bit with the Korean giant’s latest Tizen smartphone. If you didn’t already surmise from the phone’s price tag and specs, the Z2 isn’t supposed to attract seasoned smartphone users. Instead, Samsung is once again looking at feature phone users – of which more than 550 million exist in India – for selling the new Tizen handset. The company touts Tizen as a simple and intuitive operating system (it’s not any more simple or difficult to use than the company’s Android phones), and the Z2 gets a couple of new features focused on Indian users.

These features include the My Money Transfer app, which will let users transfer money between bank accounts without the need for an internet connection (Samsung says most popular banks will support the app). Then there is S Bike Mode, which is making its Tizen debut with the Z2. Samsung has also built in a quick way of switching between apps – you can swipe up from the bottom of the screen to switch between all your recently opened apps, something that worked pretty well when I tried it out. Ultra Data Saving Mode is also available. In terms of performance, the phone felt quick and smooth, especially given the meagre hardware inside. But then again, that’s one of Tizen’s allures: The OS is lightweight and suitable for low-end devices.

samsung-z2-my-money

samsung-z2-bike-mode

In terms of design, there’s nothing special on offer here, except maybe on the red wine version of the Z2. Like the Blue Coral Galaxy Note 7, the red wine version is a maroon-ish red on the front and back but gold on the sides, which makes for a nice look. The phone is extremely thick at the sides, but that actually plays out as an advantage as the screen is rather small at 4 inches. Oh, and as expected for this price, the screen is a regular LCD unit. There is no auto brightness option, but you do get an Outdoor option for increased brightness when you need it.

samsung-z2-red

samsung-z2-back-red samsung-z2-side-2 samsung-z2-top

I tried out the Z2′s cameras as well. The rear camera produced rather poor images in the brightly lit demo area inside the venue, but I’m guessing its performance will be better in natural light. The front camera is also run-of-the-mill, but nothing else can be expected from a VGA sensor. The camera can be launched quickly by double tapping the home button, a feature that is pretty much available on every Samsung phone these days.

We will be doing an official Z2 review and will be better able to tell you how the phone performs in all aspects after using it for a few days. My first impression is that the Samsung Z2 is yet another Tizen handset that will do nothing to attract Android users and will only be bought by those that are moving on from a feature phone or are looking for a cheap secondary phone for calls and messaging (a huge market in India). It’s the cheapest Samsung has gone with a Tizen handset and that will help sales considerably. There’s no good Android phone under $70, especially not one with 4G connectivity, and that’s where the Z2 could be a very good proposition.

Galaxy Note 7 vs iPhone 6S speed test video doesn’t accurately reflect real-world performance

A video is making the rounds online showing a speed test between the iPhone 6S and the Galaxy Note 7. Samsung’s latest flagship is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor with 4GB RAM whereas the iPhone 6S has a year-old processor and only 2GB of RAM. On paper, it should not be able to match the Galaxy Note 7 but the video shows that the Note 7 gets obliterated by the iPhone in this speed test. However, the video is not exactly an accurate representation of the Galaxy Note 7′s performance.

Granted that the Galaxy Note 7 isn’t as snappy as some of the other Android flagships but do bear in mind that Apple does a lot of work to optimize its hardware and software so that they work together almost perfectly. That’s not the case with Android devices so they are already at an inherent disadvantage when it comes to overall system optimization.

This speed test doesn’t cover some of Samsung’s genuinely useful features like split-screen multitasking or the S Pen’s Glance feature which are great for productivity as they enable users to use two apps side-by-side. The speed test doesn’t indicate the handset’s real-world performance as nobody is going to open 14 apps and render a video in the same exact sequence. What it does show is that performance is not a numbers game, optimization of software and hardware is much more important than the additional gigs of RAM a smartphone might boast.

Samsung will open its semiconductor foundry for small and medium companies

Samsung has its own semiconductor chip manufacturing facilities, and it is changing the way it does business. The company will reportedly stop mass producing fewer products and start producing a variety of goods on a small scale. Apparently, this will reduce the company’s reliance on Apple and Qualcomm, which are its major clients.

Samsung has now decided to open its foundry to other small and medium businesses in the China, South Korea, and the US. The South Korean electronics giant has gone all out and called this new business strategy as ‘open foundry’. According to a report from ETNews, Samsung will hold the ‘Samsung Foundry Forum’ on August 30 in Shanghai where chip designers from major fabless Chinese semiconductor companies have been invited.

Samsung is also planning to announce its semiconductor manufacturing technologies and supporting designs with its possible clients at separate events and meetings. Samsung will share its 14nm and 10nm FinFET fabrication technologies with these customers.  Samsung will also use 28nm FD-SOI (Fully Depleted-Silicon On Insulator) technology that increases efficiency in production cost. It will also open more factories to produce 65nm to 130nm chips.

The company has already attracted various small and medium fabless semiconductor firms from South Korea as well as other countries around the world. Chae Jae-ho, the vice president of Above Semiconductor’s development headquarters, said, “We are producing 32-bit MCU through Samsung Electronics’ 65-nano e-Flash process. We are going to successfully enter 32-bit MCU markets based on Samsung’s advanced technical skills in processes.

The company is also joining hands with chip design houses from South Korea and outside for further improving its chips. AllChips, AlphaChips, e-Silicon, HanaTech, KoreaChips, and VeriSilicon are becoming design house partners for Samsung. Samsung recently lost the contract to manufacture mobile chips for Apple after the ‘chipgate‘ fiasco. The company recently started making chips for AMD and Qualcomm.

$185,000 worth of prizes are up for grabs as part of Samsung’s new ‘Tizen App Challenge’

Samsung has today kicked off a new competition which is specifically aimed at developers who have created a game using Unity that has attracted more than 10,000 installations via the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. There’s a total of $185,000 up for grabs as part of this challenge. However, it won’t all go to one winner. Instead, it will divided between fifty people with three of them receiving an additional prize if their game reaches the highest number of downloads during the contest period.

To be in with a chance of winning, developers will need port their existing Unity-based game to Tizen, then start selling it in the Tizen Store. The first fifty people to enter will receive an ‘Early Bird’ prize of $3,000. Samsung will then dish out ‘top prizes’ to the three participants whose games managed to reach the highest number of downloads out of all of the competition entries, in the amount of $20,000, $10,000 and $5,000, respectively.

Samsung Z2 officially announced in India as the third Tizen smartphone

Samsung has finally made the Z2, the third commercial Tizen handset, official, at an event in New Delhi, India today. Like the Z1 and Z3, the Z2 is a low-end device that is targeted at those looking for a smartphone on a budget and those shifting from a feature phone to a smartphone for the first time. Its specs are better than the Z1′s but not the Z3, and the Z2 is the first Tizen phone to support 4G LTE connectivity.

The Z2 is one of the thickest smartphones Samsung has launched in recent times, with a 3.97-inch display up front and a quad-core Spreadtrum processor under the hood. There’s also 1GB of RAM, 8GB of expandable internal storage, a 5-megapixel rear camera, a VGA front camera, and a 1,500 mAh battery. The Z2 runs Tizen 2.4 out of the box; the most notable new feature for Indian users is the My Money Transfer app, which makes transferring money between different bank accounts a quick affair. Users can switch between apps with a simple swipe up from the bottom of the screen, and the phone comes with features like S Bike Mode and support for 12 regional languages.

The Samsung Z2 is priced at Rs. 4,999 and will be available in gold, black and red wine colors starting August 29th. Indian retailer PayTM will sell it online, and offline it will be sold by most retailers. We’ll be going hands-on with the phone in a while, so keep an eye out to see Samsung’s latest Tizen device in action.
