Let Samsung show you the power of the Galaxy S10’s camera Night mode

By this time, almost every Galaxy S10 owner in the world is likely to have received that very important software update that introduced a dedicated camera Night mode for Samsung’s latest flagship, and that may be why the company has decided to officially show off the power of the Galaxy S10’s Night mode. In a new post on its global newsroom, Samsung has published a number of photos it took around Seoul’s top landmarks to boast about how Night mode can create better photos in low-light conditions.

Higher detail, lower noise, more accurate colors

In addition to comparing photos of various locations, Samsung has explained how Night mode makes a difference in a variety of conditions. The best advantage of Night mode is no doubt reduced noise and higher detail across the scene in most pictures, but as Samsung points out, it also corrects colors and better exposes both bright and dark areas. Indeed, as long-time Galaxy smartphone owners will probably know, Samsung’s smartphones tend to overexpose bright sources of light in the automatic photo mode, and Night mode fixes that while also enhancing other aspects.

← SLIDE →

Of course, Samsung used a tripod for all photos, but as we had seen in our own testing, Night mode makes a difference even when you use your hands. Oddly, Samsung has chosen to make the post about the Galaxy S10+ instead of the complete Galaxy S10 lineup in general, but that doesn’t mean the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10e are any less capable. The same goes for the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9. These 2018 flagships may sometimes fail to take a picture with Night mode, but when they work, they match the Galaxy S10 lineup as far as image quality is concerned.

Check out Samsung’s newsroom post at this link to see all the comparison photos.

Samsung Pay in India now lets you apply for loans and credit cards

Samsung Pay has received a feature update in India, which allows users to apply for credit card and personal loans through Paisabazaar. The latter is India’s largest online marketplace and compare tool for loans, and its “Chance of Approval” predictive algorithm was introduced last December.

The implementation of Paisabazaar within the Samsung Pay app is not tremendously elegant. Samsung’s mobile app was barely changed in the process, but it now includes a link to Paisabazaar’s online form for credit card applications and loans. It’s not truly a fully in-app solution, but more of a simple way for Samsung Pay to make it easier for users to access the financial service’s online forms.

Paisabazaar is at a tap’s distance in Samsung Pay

Paisabazaar introduced its “Chance of Approval” predictive algorithm late last year with the goal of increasing the acceptance rate for applications. The algorithm takes into account the user’s profile details including income and credit score. It then tries to present credit card and loan offers that are more likely to being approved.

Naveen Kukarja, CEO of Paisabazaar added that “[The] integration with Samsung Pay is a natural fit as it will provide users with a platform that is equipped to give them a variety of quick financial solutions.” Meanwhile, Samsung India’s Sanjay Razdan added that “Our partnership with Paisabazaar.com has helped us create a holistic platform […]” which enables users in India to make easy payments on their mobile devices while giving them the “Comfort of opting for various financial products.”

It goes without saying that Paisabazaar will not be integrated with Samsung Pay outside of India. However, there’s no telling whether this recent update will become a precedent, and maybe other online financial platforms will partner with Samsung Pay in different markets.

Samsung’s doing a poor job of keeping us updated about the Galaxy Fold

It’s mid-April. Samsung’s most innovative and game-changing mobile device in recent years is just a couple of days away from hitting retail shelves. Those who pre-ordered the device are excited and can’t wait for the day it will be delivered to their doorstep. Others can’t wait to try one out at a local store before purchasing one. And then, it all goes wrong. Reports begin to surface about the device having serious design issues. Samsung decides to postpone it indefinitely, less than a week before it was supposed to make its grand retail debut.

Yes, we’re talking about the Galaxy Fold, Samsung’s first commercial foldable smartphone (or tablet, depending on how you want to look at it). It’s been nearly three months since Samsung made the announcement that it is delaying the Galaxy Fold launch (78 days, to be exact). While that may have been the sensible thing to do for a $1,980 device given the problems that were discovered, we feel Samsung has done a very poor job of keeping us and prospective consumers updated about when we can expect the Galaxy Fold to finally go on sale.

Samsung employees have offered details, but nothing is actually official

DJ Koh, head of Samsung’s mobile division, had said back in May that the company would not be “too late” with releasing the fixed version of the Fold. Other Samsung employees, meanwhile, have been quoted as saying the new release date would be “announced in a few weeks” multiple times over the last few weeks. But there has been no press release on Samsung’s global newsroom, nor is there something like a website with a countdown to tease us about the Fold’s eventual return.

Galaxy Fold Review

Of course, a countdown makes little sense if the company can’t be sure when it will be able to fix the Fold’s issues. However, there’s not been any press release giving us an update on how far along the company is with the fixes, either. According to Koh, the issues have been defined and Samsung is testing more than 2,000 units in preparation for the relaunch. But that was revealed at a meeting with some media outlets in South Korea, not on any official Samsung website. That means many prospective consumers are still in the dark, and so are those who work with and write about mobile devices for a living (like us here at SamMobile).

Consumers could lose interest if Samsung continues to stay silent

Now, we understand that providing a concrete release time frame would be near impossible to do (the latest information says the release could happen in the “holiday season”). If the Fold runs into problems after Samsung brings out the overhauled iteration, it would be a major disaster for the Korean giant, similar to the Galaxy Note 7 debacle from 2016. But to simply offer no information via official channels is problematic in our opinion, and the company risks seeing consumers lose interest in the Galaxy Fold by staying mum on the matter.

What do you think? Should Samsung have done a better job of keeping everyone updated with information on the Galaxy Fold?

Galaxy J5 (2017) and J5 Pro (2017) set to receive the Android Pie update soon

Google may be inching closer to the release of Android Q, but Samsung is not yet done with the rollout of Android Pie for all the eligible Galaxy devices. Though the Korean company has covered most of its midrange and flagship models already, there are still many budget devices waiting for the update.

Two such budget models, the Galaxy J5 (2017) and J5 Pro (2017), are finally set to receive the Android Pie update soon. These devices have been certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance yesterday with Android Pie onboard, which hints at an impending rollout. Going by the same certification for other models, the update should hit these devices in the next six weeks or so.

Both these budget phones were launched in 2017 with Android Nougat on board, which makes the upcoming release the second and perhaps the last Android version update for these devices. Previously, Samsung used to release just one major version update for its budget devices. The company, however, seems to have changed its policy in recent months, probably due to the increasing threat from Chinese brands.

Android Pie may not be a major update for other OEMs, but for Galaxy devices, it is one of the biggest releases in recent years. This is because the Pie update for Galaxy devices also brings Samsung’s feature-rich One UI. You can read our One UI (Android Pie) Feature Focus series to learn what the new update brings to the table.

Galaxy A50s benchmark shows the apple might not fall far from the tree

The refreshed Galaxy A50 variant known by the model number SM-A507F has been tested online using Geekbench. But even though the so-called Galaxy A50s is expected to be a refresh over the ongoing model, the benchmark results show a number of hardware characteristics that have been left unchanged.

So far, the refresh doesn’t have anything new to show for itself, but the smartphone is still largely covered in mystery. It’s not like we’re running out of time for more leaks and rumors, as it’s still unclear when the Galaxy A50s is supposed to come out. More importantly, some improvements may have been made in areas that don’t come up in most benchmarking tools.

Same, but different, but still the same?

At face value, judging by the Geekbench listing, the Galaxy A50s is identical to the ongoing model. It’s equipped with the same Exynos 9610 chipset and 4GB of RAM while running Android 9 Pie. The SM-A507F also scores just about the same points in the Geekbench single-core and multi-core tests as the SM-A505F, the regular Galaxy A50.

We have previously obtained some information regarding the refreshed Galaxy A series. The Galaxy A50s, in particular, should launch with 64GB of storage and a black or white paint job. The Galaxy A50 has 64GB of storage and black and white color options (in addition to blue) as well, so we can only guess what upgrades the Galaxy A50s might bring to the table.

By looking at the Galaxy A10s – which is likely to improve upon its camera configuration and sensors – we could guess that Samsung might want to refresh the Galaxy A50 in similar areas. The main camera on the Galaxy A50 could use some improvements to remain competitive against some of its mid-range rivals. And by focusing less on changing the internal hardware, perhaps the Galaxy A50s will offer these improvements and even better value-for-money.

Exclusive: This is the Galaxy Tab S6 and it has a dual camera

We can exclusively confirm some details about Samsung’s next flagship tablet today. The successor to the Galaxy Tab S4 isn’t going to be called the Galaxy Tab S5. Samsung will launch it as the Galaxy Tab S6 instead, as these images sent to us by a tipster confirm. This name change was on the cards after Samsung launched a premium mid-range tablet in the form of the Galaxy Tab S5e.

What’s in a name, though? What matters more is the tablet’s specs, chief among which is the processor. Many will be glad to know that this won’t be a repeat of the Galaxy Tab S4 which came with the Snapdragon 835 even though the 845 was already available.

Galaxy Tab S6 gets a dual camera and a new S Pen

Not only can we confirm that Samsung’s next flagship tablet is called the Galaxy Tab S6, we also hear that it will indeed tout the Snapdragon 855 processor. This means that it will come with the latest Snapdragon chipset. An earlier Geekbench listing revealed that the tablet will have 6GB of RAM and run Android 9 Pie. The tablet features a 10.5-inch display.

We hear that Samsung’s next high-end tablet will skip the 64GB storage option. The base model will offer 128GB storage while 256GB will be an option for those looking to spend a bit more. The Galaxy Tab S6 will also come with its very own stylus much like its predecessor. There’s also going to be a groove at the back where the S Pen will attach magnetically and charge. Yes, it will be a Bluetooth-enabled S Pen like the Galaxy Note 9’s. This means we will get more S Pen features with the new tablet since the stylus can always be carried with it.

Our sources tell us that the Galaxy Tab S6 is going to feature a dual camera at the back. The specifics of this camera system haven’t been detailed as yet. However, this would be the first Samsung tablet to get it. It may be a ToF sensor for features such as real-time 3D tracking. This will make the tablet a great option for people who require such features for work.

We also hear that the Galaxy Tab S6, bearing model number SM-T860 for the Wi-Fi and SM-T865 for the LTE variants, will be available in Grey, Blue and Brown colors. There’s going to be a keyboard cover accessory which isn’t surprising. Samsung offers one for the Galaxy Tab S5e as well.

What’s unclear at this point in time is when Samsung is planning on launching this tablet. There have been no rumors to suggest that it could come out with the Galaxy Note 10 on August 7. It still remains a possibility, though. The Galaxy Tab S4 was announced on August 1, 2018, just a week before the Galaxy Note 9’s unveiling on August 9. There’s also the possibility that Samsung might launch the device at IFA 2019 in Berlin this September.

We’ll be sure to let you know when we hear more about the Galaxy Tab S6. Do check out our SamMobile TV video on this latest leak down below where we discuss a lot more about Samsung’s upcoming flagship tablet.

Galaxy S9/Note 9 camera Night mode has a frustrating bug for some users

Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9 owners have reached out to us and taken to online forums to complain about a frustrating bug with the newly introduced dedicated camera Night mode: The device can sometimes throw a “camera failed” warning at the user and fail to save the picture. This is something we’ve come across on one of our Galaxy Note 9 units as well, and at this time, no apparent reason for the issue has been discovered.

Our Note 9, for example, failed almost every time we tried to take a photo of people in fairly low-light conditions at a local pub but succeeded at capturing everything else. Some users feel like the issue could be showing up only when the phone isn’t held steady enough, but why that would result in an error instead of simply producing a shaky photo is anyone’s guess. Not every device is affected to the same degree, with some users saying the camera fails more than 90 percent of the time while others see it happening far less frequently.

Shooting photos at 16:9 aspect ratio is a temporary solution

Resetting camera settings seems to reduce the chances of the issue cropping up, but doesn’t make it go away completely. For now, the only solution is switching from the default 4:3 aspect ratio to 16:9 aspect ratio, although that also means the phone shoots at a lower resolution (9.1MP for 16:9, 12MP for 4:3). Samsung will hopefully bring a permanent fix with a software update in the near future. The dedicated Night mode was introduced with the June security update for the Galaxy S9 and Note 9, and it’s possible Samsung didn’t test it thoroughly before pushing the update to users.

We’ll be keeping an eye out for more reports on the issue and will also test things again once the next update for these devices comes out. In the meantime, do let us know in the comments if your Galaxy S9 or Note 9 is having trouble with the camera’s Night mode.

Galaxy Store update in India brings sneaky app suggestions

Samsung rebranded the Galaxy Apps store to Galaxy Store with the One UI redesign earlier this year. An update was released for Galaxy Apps in February, bringing in the design overhaul as well as the rebranding. The update has finally arrived for users in India, but you may not like it. While the update does bring the refreshed user interface, it may also trick you to download some apps you may or may not need.

Unnecessary app suggestions

Samsung is rolling out version 6.6 of Galaxy Store in India. The new version appears to be easier to navigate, but now, the Galaxy Store also suggests you to download some unnecessary apps when you first fire it up after the update is installed, through a collaboration with third-party app store Indus App Bazaar. And you may easily get tricked into downloading those apps if you’re not paying attention, as they come pre-selected. You have to manually deselect the apps to avoid installing them.

Samsung is probably doing this to make extra money now that it’s losing profit on budget and mid-range phones due to aggressive pricing. Budget and mid-range Galaxy smartphones launched in India offer similar suggestions for apps when a device is first set up and by putting up a persistent notification that only goes away once the user taps the notification and approves or denies the app suggestions. However, even Galaxy S10 owners are seeing these app suggestions in the Galaxy Store, and it’s not something they’ll appreciate after paying upwards of Rs. 70,000 (~$1020) for the flagship phone.

Samsung’s next flagship tablet could launch as the Galaxy Tab S6

The next flagship tablet in Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S lineup could launch as the Galaxy Tab S6. It was revealed in mid-May that Samsung is working on a new flagship tablet with model numbers SM-T860 and SM-T865 for the Wi-Fi and LTE variants, and the LTE variant showed up on the Geekbench benchmark database nearly a month later, showing off some of its specs. And now, Twitter leakster evleaks has revealed that the new tablet will be called the Galaxy Tab S6.

It isn’t very surprising that Samsung isn’t going to launch the Galaxy Tab S4’s successor with the Galaxy Tab S5 moniker. It already released the mid-range Galaxy Tab S5e earlier this year, and launching a Galaxy Tab S5 after the Tab S5e would only serve to confuse consumers. This is similar to how Samsung decided to skip ahead to the Galaxy Note 7 after the Galaxy Note 5 so that consumers wouldn’t consider the new Note as being inferior to the Galaxy S flagship from the same year.

Unfortunately, we’re no closer to learning when the Galaxy Tab S6 will be announced. However, we can expect an unveiling around the Galaxy Note 10’s launch in early August, based on the August 1 launch of the Galaxy Tab S4 last year. As far as specs are concerned, the Tab S6 was spotted on Geekbench with a Snapdragon 855 SoC, 6GB of RAM, and Android 9 Pie. As we had exclusively revealed, the base model of the device will have 128GB of storage.

New Samsung Galaxy Note 10 teaser entices power users

The Galaxy Note series has always been geared towards power users. It offers features that aim to help people who need to work on the move. So it’s no surprise that Samsung is playing this up again ahead of the Galaxy Note 10’s launch.

Samsung is due to launch the Galaxy Note 10 next month. As expected, it’s going to be aimed at power users. This will be the first time that Samsung offers two different models of the same Note flagship. The larger display will certainly be appreciated by many users.

Galaxy Note 10 teaser is all about being productive

This Galaxy Note 10 teaser has been posted on Twitter by Samsung Indonesia. It’s all about getting work done, whether it’s through DeX on an external monitor or with the S Pen on the device itself. The claim here being that users won’t have to juggle multiple devices to get work done. They will be all set with the Galaxy Note 10.

That’s obviously not to say that the Galaxy Note 10 will be able to replace your notebook. Even tablets have yet to do that. However, the additional functionality provided by Note handsets do make it somewhat more plausible to get some actual work done on your smartphone.

The Galaxy Note 10 will certainly have flagship-level specs so it will be an Android powerhouse. Samsung may also offer new software functionality to further aid the power users. It will talk about all of the improvements made to the Galaxy Note 10 next month. The Galaxy Note 10 launch event has been scheduled for August 7 in New York City.
