Samsung Internet installs cross 1 billion mark on Play Store

The Samsung Internet browser has crossed an elusive milestone on the Play Store: the app has been installed more than one billion times. It was only 12 months ago that Samsung Internet breached the 500 million installs mark, and the latest figure puts it ahead of both the Firefox and Opera browsers for Android devices combined.

The fact that Samsung Internet comes preloaded on Galaxy smartphones has helped it achieve the 1 billion milestone, as every new device that gets activated counts as one install. Since Galaxy smartphones sell considerably more than devices from other manufacturers, the Samsung Internet app is likely to retain the top spot for years to come as far as the install count is concerned.

Of course, that’s not counting Google Chrome, which will always stay ahead as it’s popular as a browser on both mobile and desktop and also comes preloaded on all Android devices. Samsung Internet is available for all Android devices as well (Android 5.0 Lollipop and above), and it’s also one of the most feature-packed browsers on Android. Plugins/support for extensions is perhaps its biggest draw, in addition to Samsung-exclusive features such as iris sensor authentication on websites.

The app has also had excellent performance for a long time, better than Google Chrome based on our experience. Last but not the least, Samsung actively adds new features and improvements to its proprietary browser app, more so than any of its other apps that are available on the Play Store.

Get your first look at blue Galaxy S10e and Galaxy S10 in these renders

Recent leaks have given us a look at the Galaxy S10 in white, black, green, and a ceramic finish. We have also seen the yellow Galaxy S10e and a possible red Galaxy S10. What has been missing is blue, the fourth standard color option for Samsung’s upcoming flagship, but that has been corrected by renders leaked by MySmartPrice. The blue variant looks quite sober and nice, and it’s certainly a far cry from the insanely bright yellow that Samsung might use for the Galaxy S10e.

As mentioned above, blue will be part of the standard color options for all Galaxy S10 models. That said, MySmartPrice says these renders are for the Galaxy S10e and Galaxy S10, although the Plus model should look exactly the same in blue. Of course, as tradition would dictate, not every color will be available in every market. While we hope that’s something Samsung changes this year, just like it started offering various storage options in a higher number of countries last year, the sheer number of Galaxy S10 variants and configurations that are expected may make it a tough task for the company.

What’s your opinion of the blue Galaxy S10? Do you like it, or do you think the other color options are better?

Ceramic Galaxy S10 listed by Vietnamese retailer for $1,333 (VND 30,990,000)

For the first time ever, Samsung will be offering its latest flagship in a variant with a ceramic back. Only the top-end Galaxy S10+ is expected to come in a ceramic variant, and one Vietnamese retailer may have revealed what kind of price tag we can expect from the ceramic model. Retailer FTP Shop has the ceramic Galaxy S10 listed for VND 30,990,000, which translates to $1,333. However, this particular model is listed with only 8GB of RAM and 512GB of storage, while reports suggest there may be a costlier version with 1TB storage and 12GB of RAM.

Of course, whether the 12GB of RAM will turn out to be accurate remains to be seen, as we have seen nothing too concrete or believable that hints at that much RAM on any Galaxy S10 model. The 1TB of storage is only confirmed because Samsung announced a 1TB UFS chip for phones last month, but there’s nothing stopping the company from offering a 1TB option with all Galaxy S10 models, or at least the regular Galaxy S10+ instead of just the ceramic one. The price tag for that much storage out of the box will probably be insanely high, so it may end up being exclusive to a few markets.

However, with the retailer in question only listing the non-ceramic Galaxy S10 with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, we probably aren’t getting a look at all the storage and RAM variants. Not that that will be a mystery for much longer, as the Galaxy S10’s official launch will be upon us in just a few days.

SamMobile Daily Recap, February 11, 2019: Foldable phone tease, Galaxy S evolution, and more

Samsung plans big on 8K QLED TVs to stay ahead in premium TV market

Samsung showcased its first 8K QLED TV at CES 2018 in January last year. The ultra-high-resolution offering went on sale in select markets during the second half of the year. The company significantly expanded its 8K lineup by launching many 8K TVs at this year’s CES. One of the company’s top executives has now revealed the roadmap for the company’s 8K TVs at a recent press interaction in Korea.

Speaking to a group of reporters at the company’s headquarters, Han Jong-hee, Head of Samsung’s Visual Display Business, stated that the company is going to bring its 8K QLED TVs to 60 countries by March 2019. Han said Samsung will account for half of the total 8K TV sales this year and plans to sell 5 million units by 2022.

‘Display should come first followed by content’

“Display should come first followed by content. The opposite case never happens. The 8K QLED TV presents the best image quality for any content. We are confident in its quality”, said Han, addressing questions about lack of 8K content, according to Yonhap News Agency. Han also believes the commercial launch of 5G networks will lead to more high-quality content and demand for high-resolution screens. So far, the company has been marketing its AI-powered upscaling technology as an immediate and reliable solution to the content problem.

With LG’s OLED TVs gaining traction in the lucrative premium TV market, Samsung has been working on multiple strategies to counter the threat from its Korean rival. While Samsung is betting on its 8K QLED offerings to strengthen its position in the current scenario, it is hoping that its more advanced MicroLED display technology will help the company stay ahead of its OLED rivals in the premium segment in the long run.

Samsung Galaxy S10 Cinnabar Red render surfaces online

A few days ago, we spotted a render of what could be the Canary Yellow Samsung Galaxy S10e online. Today, we stumbled upon yet another colour variant of the Galaxy S10; this time it’s the Cinnabar Red version. So far, we know that the Galaxy S10 will be available in black, white, blue, and green. The Cinnabar Red variant may be limited to the Galaxy S10, much like the Canary Yellow colour, which is most likely going to be exclusive to the Galaxy S10e.

Cinnabar Red  Galaxy S10 spotted online

Judging by the colour, it is very likely that this particular variant could be a limited edition or region-locked exclusive. It will likely be intended for the Chinese markets, where the colour holds a lot of cultural significance. We could even see it making its way to Samsung’s home base in Korea and a few Asian markets, but an international release seems unlikely. Red coloured phones are a rarity in most western countries and we don’t see Samsung breaking that norm anytime soon.

We’ll know soon-ish, considering that the much-awaited launch event for the Galaxy S10 is just around the corner. From what we know about the Galaxy S10 so far, it promises to be an excellent upgrade from the Galaxy S9 with features like a triple-camera setup and punch hole Infinity-O display.

Samsung’s new teaser hints at foldable phone launch alongside the Galaxy S10

It’s been expected that we will get a proper look at Samsung’s foldable phone at the Galaxy S10 Unpacked event on February 20, and the company has now dropped another hint through a teaser video for the event. The video teases the foldable device before moving to the Galaxy S10 teaser that we have already seen. The “The Future Unfolds” tagline that accompanies the video is a pretty clear sign that the February 20 event will not just be about the tenth-anniversary Galaxy S flagship.

Of course, it remains to be seen just how much information and details Samsung will offer about the foldable phone – currently dubbed Galaxy Fold – at the Galaxy S10 launch. A full reveal of the device’s actual design is to be expected, but Samsung may choose to withhold pricing and availability details. Or it may give us the full monty, since the competition is breathing down Samsung’s neck with their own foldable devices. Again, we can’t really say at this point, but with February 20 fast approaching, it won’t be long before everything is officially revealed (or not revealed).

Check out the teaser video below, and let us know if you are excited to see Samsung’s foldable phone alongside the Galaxy S10 down in the comments!

Limited Edition Galaxy S10 to launch on March 15, pre-order listing reveals

The impending launch of the Galaxy S10 has thrown the smartphone industry into a frenzy. Samsung will be launching the three Galaxy S10 variants, the S10e, regular S10, and the S10+, on February 20. There has also been some chatter about a special edition Galaxy S10+ which may come with 12GB RAM and 1TB storage.

Thanks to a pre-order listing on the Samsung Philippines website, we now have a launch date for this device. The website says the Limited Edition Galaxy S10 will be available on March 15 in the country.

Limited Edition Galaxy S10+ with ceramic back?

Samsung Philippines isn’t giving any more details about this Limited Edition device yet. The listing, which has silhouettes of four smartphones side by side, simply mentions it as “Limited Edition”, with the “Option A” code. The text below it says the device will be available on March 15, 2019.

The silhouette of the Limited Edition device, however, suggests it to be a variant of the Galaxy S10+. If we are to go by previous reports, this Limited Edition Galaxy S10+ could be the one with the ceramic back. And if it indeed comes with 12GB RAM and 1TB storage, it will be the most expensive Galaxy S10 model, with some estimates suggesting it to cost over $1,700. All this, however, is mere speculation as of now.

The Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10, and the Galaxy S10+, meanwhile, are expected to be available for pre-order starting February 21. Samsung will reportedly release the handsets on March 8 in some markets. The availability date for this Limited Edition model may also vary with markets.

Check out this infographic about the Galaxy S lineup’s evolution

The folks over at Gadgets Deck have prepared a nicely detailed infographic that shows how Samsung’s Galaxy S lineup of flagships has evolved over the years. The infographic offers a good look at how the specs have evolved, to be more precise. Like how the first Galaxy S had just 512MB of RAM, 24 times less than what the top-most Galaxy S10 variant is expected to offer this year. Or how the megapixel count for the rear cameras hasn’t really increased by much and is actually lower now than it was with devices like the Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 4.

The numbers don’t always tell the whole story, though. In case of the rear cameras, the numbers for parameters such as pixel size and aperture are what decide how good the pictures will come out. Another example is the internal storage. While the first Galaxy S had 16GB of built-in storage, only 2GB was usable for installing apps and storing OS data. The rest was treated just like a microSD card. Of course, we’ve lost things like IR blasters and removable batteries along the way, but we have gained other benefits in the long run, such as water resistance and screens with minimal bezels.

Check out the infographic below, then see what we here at SamMobile remember about the Galaxy S flagships that have come before the Galaxy S10 in our 10 years of Galaxy S flagships series.

Galaxy M20 launched in Indonesia, goes on sale on February 14

Samsung launched the Galaxy M10 and the Galaxy M20 in India last month, hoping to grab hold of some market share in the budget segment. The company is now bringing the new Galaxy M series to Indonesia and has launched the Galaxy M20 in the country. The device will go on sale in the country on February 14.

As expected, Samsung isn’t launching the Galaxy M10 in Indonesia. The Galaxy M20, meanwhile, is expected to hit more markets in the coming months, including Russia and the UAE. Samsung will also be adding more models to the Galaxy M series in the coming months.

Only one Galaxy M20 variant available in Indonesia

The Galaxy M20 is available in 3GB+32GB and 4GB+64GB variants in India. However, the device is only available with 3GB RAM and 32GB storage in Indonesia. The rest of the specs remain same. The phone runs Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box and is powered by the Exynos 7904 chip. It carries a 6.3-inch Infinity-V display with Full HD+ resolution.

The Galaxy M20 comes with a dual rear camera setup. There is a 13-megapixel primary sensor with F1.9 aperture and a 5-megapixel ultra-wide sensor with F2.2 aperture and 120-degree field of view. The device gets an 8-megapixel camera at front. The Galaxy M20 packs a 5,000 mAh battery and comes equipped with fast charging support. Read our Galaxy M20 review to know more about the device.

Samsung has priced the Galaxy M20 at Rp 2.8 million (roughly $199) in Indonesia. This phone will be sold online through flash sale mechanism at Lazada.co.id, Blibli.com and JD.id starting February 14. Samsung promises exclusive offers to buyers who purchase the device between February 14 and February 21.

10 years of Samsung Galaxy S flagships: Looking back at the first Galaxy S!

All eyes are on Samsung at the moment, as the Korean giant prepares to dazzle the world with the Galaxy S10 in San Francisco on February 20. As the tenth-anniversary edition of Samsung’s popular Galaxy S line of flagships, the Galaxy S10 has to fulfill a lot of expectations, and the company’s mobile chief has said that the company is hoping the S10 will do just that. And as we count down the days to the Galaxy S10 Unpacked event, we wanted to look back on each of the nine Galaxy S flagships that have come before in our 10 years of Samsung Galaxy S flagship series.

In this series, we’ll be talking about our memories and experience with each of those Galaxy S phones. Today, we’re looking back at the original Galaxy S that launched in March of 2010. The Galaxy S was an important device that kickstarted Samsung’s long journey as the king of the Android smartphone market. It was one of the most powerful smartphones at the time and the Super AMOLED display on the Galaxy S was considerably more attractive than anything else on the market. While detractors criticized the over-the-top colors, that display was perhaps the major reason why consumers bought the phone in droves.

So what do we here at SamMobile remember about the Galaxy S? Read on to find out, then let us know your memories and experience with the device down in the comments.

Danny Dorresteijn

The Galaxy S was my first Android phone from Samsung. I had moved from the Samsung Omnia II, a Windows Mobile phone. The Galaxy S turned my interest in Samsung smartphones into a full-time gig. Samsung-firmwares.com was the first website on the internet that published an Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread firmware for the Galaxy S. We ultimately had to change our website’s name to Samfirmware and then to SamMobile since Samsung didn’t like the fact that we had the company’s name in our domain, but hey, look at us now!

Abhijeet Mishra

The Galaxy S was my second Samsung Android phone (I had the Galaxy Apollo I5800 for a few months before I moved to the Galaxy S) and sparked my interest in custom ROMs. I was part of the team for two of the most popular Galaxy S custom ROMs: Darky and ROM Kitchen. I used to write installation guides for them on XDA, which ultimately introduced me to blogging and then, in 2013, I found my way to SamMobile.

The Galaxy S was an amazing phone for me, as I had never owned anything close to a flagship phone before. With custom ROMs and hacks for things such as the phone’s audio, it became much better than what Samsung was offering out of the box. But all that flashing and wiping took a toll on my Galaxy S. In the final days before I sold it off, I remember the phone had learned a few odd tricks, like being able to stay on without the battery as long as the charger was connected to the USB port.

Martin Reinders

The very first Galaxy S brings back good memories. I remember seeing a poster at a bus stop on the way home and thinking “I simply have to have that phone,” so I bought the phone at the very first store that had it. I thought it was an amazing phone when I unboxed it, but I thought I should check if there’s new software available for it online before I start using it. That’s how I stumbled upon Samsung-firmwares.com. My first attempt to flash the new firmware failed and that almost brought me to tears. But a second attempt was successful, and then I saw the owner of the site (Danny) was trying to find someone to help him out, so I went ahead and applied. I didn’t hear back so I just started stalking the dude, and that’s how history was written!

The Galaxy S was the phone I had most fun with customizing, especially with stuff developed by a developer called Supercurio. That man was and is still awesome, and his greatest contribution was Voodoo Sound, which turned the phone into one hell of an MP3 player by better tuning the Wolfson DAC inside the phone than Samsung had managed. In fact, I was using the Galaxy S for music even after purchasing the Galaxy S II until it was stolen from me on my first trip to Mobile World Congress. That sure made me shed some tears. Figurative ones, but you get the gist.

T-Mobile Galaxy S9’s Android Pie update is rolling out

North American carrier T-Mobile has released the Android Pie update for the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+. T-Mobile is the last of the four major carriers to be pushing out Pie to Samsung’s 2018 flagships. The update was released on February 10 and comes with software version G960USQS3CSAB and G965USQU3CSAB for the S9 and S9+ respectively.

The Pie update for T-Mobile’s Galaxy S9 and S9+ brings RCS Universal Profile 1.0 support, which will allow users to send photos, videos, emojis and more via standard messaging, removing the need for using messaging apps like WhatsApp. As for Android Pie itself, you get Samsung’s One UI interface and plenty of new features, both major and minor ones. Some of the changes that Pie brings might not sit well with everyone, but one can hope that Samsung will make improvements based on consumer feedback with future updates.

Own a Galaxy S9 or S9+ on T-Mobile? You can check for the update on your phone by going into the Software update menu in the Settings app and tapping Download updates manually. It’s a 1.9GB download over the air, so be sure to use a Wi-Fi network if possible. If the update doesn’t show up right away, then you might have to wait a few hours as these updates are sent out in batches.

Two beautiful gradient colors announced for the Galaxy A8s

Samsung has announced two new gradient color options for the Galaxy A8s, its first smartphone with a punch-hole display. These were shown off last month and are going to be available for purchase starting Valentine’s Day. They’re both beautiful options and should have universal appeal. The initial colors were gradients as well, but those simply went from a darker shade to a lighter shade of the same color. Based on Google’s translation of Samsung China’s website, these color options will be available as Unicorn Editions.

The specs of the phone aren’t changing, so you still get a 6.4-inch Full HD+ Infinity-O display, a Snapdragon 710 chip with up to 8GB of RAM, a triple-rear camera setup with depth and ultra-wide sensors, a 24MP front camera, a 3,400 mAh battery, 128GB of internal storage, a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor, and Android 8.1 Oreo. There’s no headphone jack on the Galaxy A8s, which might be one reason Samsung hasn’t released the phone outside China yet and probably won’t do it in the foreseeable future.

Check out the pictures of the Galaxy A8s in the new colors and let us know what you think! Would you like to see such color options on Samsung’s upcoming flagship?
