What if Samsung could make the Galaxy S10’s bezels customizable through software?

So Samsung just released Good Lock 2018, a new and updated version of its interesting take on how a futuristic smartphone user interface would look like. Hidden deep among the Good Lock 2018 functionality is something called Edge Touch, which allows you to disable the edges of the device’s display from reacting to touch. Well, it doesn’t seem to actually work properly right now, but it got me thinking whether Samsung could use this idea to give consumers customizable bezels on the Galaxy S10.

Customizable bezels would keep everyone happy

Now, I’m assuming Samsung will have some sort of a full-screen display on the Galaxy S10, similar to devices like the Vivo Nex and the Oppo Find X. There’s even a new report that says Samsung could have a third Galaxy S10 model that would feature a triple-camera system at the back, and it’s possible the company would choose this model for the true bezel-less design some of its competition has already managed to achieve. But, as many of our readers have often made clear, not everyone is happy about the idea of a phone that has virtually no bezels at the front. In fact, quite a few folks are also against the Edge screen on Samsung’s flagship, not least because it can result in accidental touches despite palm rejection built into the software.

And, well, maybe Samsung can make sure it doesn’t frustrate those consumers who would like to have some bezels on their displays by making it customizable via software? Adding the option to shut off sections of the display completely to simulate the presence of bezels would be a nifty idea, as the user could create “virtual bezels” on all four corners of the display. Add the Good Lock 2018 option of disabling touch on the screen’s edges to the mix, and you would have a truly bezel-less phone that can be used without frustration by those who continue to the stick to the belief that bezels are a necessity.

It would even let the Galaxy S10 have a notch

In fact, Samsung decides it needs to have a notch on the Galaxy S10 to achieve a higher screen-to-body ratio, customizable bezels would allow the company to hide that notch. It’s something LG has already done on its new G7 ThinQ smartphone, only Samsung’s home rival uses an LCD display and not an AMOLED panel. AMOLED panels are pitch black when the pixels are turned off, and making some parts of the screen black on the Galaxy S10 to simulate bezels would virtually be the same as having actual black bezels that we see on Galaxy flagships with the Infinity display right now.

Of course, such a feature would require a responsive user interface that adjusts according to how the bezels are set up by the customer. But if there’s one manufacturer that can make custom software interfaces without breaking a sweat, it’s Samsung. If the display on the Galaxy S10 is going to extend to all four edges of the phone’s front side, it could turn away many a potential customer, and making the bezels customizable is one way the Korean giant might be able to make everyone happy.

What do you think?

Purported Samsung Android Go smartphone specs leaked

A spec sheet purportedly belonging to Samsung’s Android Go smartphone has just been leaked. The fact that Samsung is making an Android Go smartphone is well known at this point. The first positive sign of Samsung’s involvement with Google’s Android Go program was a benchmark entry for a device with model number SM-J260G. That particular benchmark didn’t exactly offer a lot of information on the device’s specs, but the entire spec sheet has now been laid bare by the folks over at Techie Drive.

Samsung Android Go smartphone specs are quite humble

The spec sheet that has leaked looks like something someone might have typed out in a Word document. But if we are to take it seriously for a moment, then Samsung’s first Android Go smartphone would offer no surprises as an entry-level smartphone. It’s got an Exynos 7570 quad-core processor clocked at 1.4GHz and 1GB of RAM, with the latter the primary reason why this phone runs Android Go instead of Samsung’s official Experience UX.

The rear and front cameras are 8-megapixel and 5-megapixel units; there’s a 2,600 mAh battery underneath, and 16GB of internal storage. It runs Android 8.1 Oreo, which is the first and only version of the OS that exists for Android Go at the moment. What’s interesting is that the device – which might be called the Galaxy J2 Core in some markets – supposedly has a Super AMOLED display (5 inches in size), which would give it some boasting rights despite its humble underpinnings.

This particular spec sheet is reportedly for the SM-J260F, which is being testing in the United Kingdom, Uzbekistan, Caucasus Countries, Germany, Italy, Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, France and Poland, as we had exclusively revealed. The two other variants are the SM-J260G and the SM-J260M. These are likely to carry the same hardware as SM-J260F, though we will have to wait and see if the leaked specs we see here turn out to be accurate.

Galaxy S10 triple-camera system to be introduced with its own model

Samsung is expected to pull out all the stops for the Galaxy S10 due early next year as it’s going to be the company’s 10th anniversary flagship. The reports so far have suggested that its processor will be an absolute ripper, it may have an in-display fingerprint sensor, a more impressive screen-to-body ratio among other advancements.

Some reports have even suggested that Samsung may introduce a triple-camera system with the Galaxy S10 which is something we have never seen before on a Samsung smartphone. A new report from South Korea reiterates this possibility, adding that the company may actually release three different variants of the Galaxy S10.

Galaxy S10 triple-camera system

It was previously revealed that Samsung refers to the next flagship internally as “Beyond.” Today’s report claims that Samsung is preparing three variants of the Galaxy S10 codenamed Beyond 0, Beyond 1 and Beyond 2.

Beyond 0 is said to be an “entry-level” model with a 5.8-inch flat display panel. It’s unclear if it’s going to have a different power package as well given that it has been billed as the cheapest model in the lineup. Beyond 1 is also said to feature a 5.8-inch display but it may be a curved panel much like how it is on the Galaxy S9. Beyond 2 will be the Galaxy S9+’s successor with its 6.2-inch curved display. It’s this particular model that’s said to feature Samsung’s triple-camera system.

If the information contained in the report is accurate, it would be the first time that Samsung offers three different variants of its flagship smartphone. It only started offering two models back in 2015 with the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge and then changed the nomenclature with the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ in 2017.

No technical details about Samsung’s triple-camera system are mentioned in this report. Samsung is expected to respond to Huawei with its own solution after the Chinese company launched its triple-camera touring P20 Pro recently. Huawei claims that the setup offers “master level” photography features with its 40-megapixel primary sensor + 8-megapixel secondary sensor backed up by a 20-megapixel monochrome sensor. The setup has largely received positive reviews.

What the addition of a triple-camera system will mean for the top-of-the-line Galaxy S10 model’s price remains to be seen. It may very well go past the $1,000 barrier and it remains to be seen if the handset will offer enough to customers to justify the purchase.

Galaxy J8 release date incoming, official firmware now available online

When Samsung launched the Galaxy J6, Galaxy A6, and the Galaxy A6+ in India last month, the company took us by surprise by making the Galaxy J8 official at the same time. What Samsung didn’t mention was the Galaxy J8 release date, only saying it would go on sale sometime in July. Well, June is almost over, and it looks like the Galaxy J8 could be released early next month as official firmware for the device are now available online.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that India is one of the first markets to be getting the Galaxy J8. The others are Nepal and the UAE. India and Nepal get the SM-J810G while the UAE gets the SM-J810F, and it’s possible the phone will also be released in other markets around the world in the coming weeks. For those who missed it, Samsung recently started testing the Galaxy J8 with a slightly upgraded model number (SM-J810x) over the one it was using (SM-J800x) before the phone was officially announced, though the specs don’t seem to have changed as a result.

And the Galaxy J8 specs aren’t all that different from the Galaxy A6+ (read our hands-on impressions here). It misses out on the 24-megapixel front camera of the A6+, its 6-inch Infinity display has a lower resolution (HD+, or 1480×720 pixels), and the phone’s build is a polycarbonate one like the Galaxy J6′. But it gets the same octa-core Snapdragon 450 SoC, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of internal storage, 3,500 mAh battery, and 16-megapixel and 5-megapixel dual rear camera. It has a 16-megapixel front camera and runs Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box.

The Galaxy J8 firmware can be downloaded from our database. They include the April 2018 security patch and carry build number J810GDDU1ARF4 for India and Nepal and J810FJXU1ARF2 for the UAE.
