Breaking: Live images reveal Samsung’s clamshell Galaxy Fold 2

The Galaxy Fold was a heavily guarded secret until the day Samsung decided to show a glimpse of it to the world, and if the company had something similar planned for its second foldable smartphone, well, it’s not going to be very happy today. A leak from the Chinese website Weibo has revealed actual live images of the Galaxy Fold 2, Samsung’s clamshell foldable phone that it is going to release alongside the Galaxy S11 next year.

New Galaxy S8 update brings December 2019 security patch

Android 10 isn’t on the cards for the Galaxy S8 (and S8+), but Samsung is continuing to release regular security updates for its 2017 flagship. Less than a month back, Samsung rolled out the November 2019 security patch to the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ in various markets, and the company is now bumping the security patch version on the two phones to December with a new update that is rolling out in some countries.

The December security update for the Galaxy S8 and S8+ comes with software G95*FXXS6DSL2 and is available in Germany, the UK, Spain, the Netherlands, and Poland. The update only includes the latest security fixes, as expected. You can download it over the air on your S8 or S8+ by opening the phone’s Settings app, selecting Software update, and tapping Download and install. [Updated] PlayGalaxy Link now supports Galaxy Fold, S9, Note 9, and A90

Update 2: The Galaxy Fold, Galaxy S9, Galaxy Note 9, and Galaxy A90 are now supported by PlayGalaxy Link. You can download the app from the Galaxy Store or our APK page.

Update: Compatibility with Android 10 has now been added in the latest PlayGalaxy Link beta release. Check our APK page linked in the original story below if you want to download the latest version, or grab it from the Galaxy Store.

Original story follows

Samsung is going to make the PlayGalaxy Link beta available to more devices in December, including the Galaxy S9, Galaxy Note 9, Galaxy A90, and the Galaxy Fold. PlayGalaxy Link is a streaming app that lets you stream your games from your PC to your smartphone and play them remotely over a Wi-Fi or mobile network (4G or 5G).

While it is already possible to stream your video games from your PC to your Galaxy device using PlayGalaxy Link’s underlying streaming platform Parsec, Samsung’s beta app has, so far, been limited to the Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy S10 series. This will change next month when the beta program will, for the first time, become available on additional Galaxy devices.

PlayGalaxy Link beta remains limited to a handful of markets

PlayGalaxy Link beta is presently available in Australia, Canada, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, the US, and the UK. There’s no evidence that this will change next month when the beta program will encompass additional Galaxy smartphones, and it’s unclear when we can expect the streaming app to become available in more markets.

In any case, the service is aimed primarily at Samsung fans who own a reasonably-powerful computer, as the heavy lifting will be done by the PC itself. An Intel Core i5 CPU is recommended, along with 8GB of RAM and an NVIDIA GTX 1060 / AMD Radeon RX550 or better graphics cards.

If you already own a compatible Galaxy smartphone, all you need to do is download the PlayGalaxy Link beta app from the Galaxy Store or our APK page and visit the official PlayGalaxy website on your computer to download the companion Windows app on your PC.

Select Samsung Smart TVs get 2 years of Disney+ free in the Netherlands

Samsung Netherlands is running an interesting offer on smart TVs, whereby prospective buyers can receive up to 2 years of subscription to Disney+ for free. The offer is valid for six of the company’s smart TV models, including the QLED 4K 55Q70R at the lowest price point of € 1.449, and the 82-inch QLED 8K 82Q950R model which goes for € 8.999.

Both of these TV models, along with the 75Q90R and 75Q85R, are now paired with 2 years of free access to Disney+. Meanwhile, the 55-inch and 65-inch 55Q70R / 65Q80R smart TVs have been paired with 1 year of free Disney+ access.

The offer stands until January but could remain exclusive to the Netherlands

The ongoing offer will last until January 19, and every eligible smart TV purchased before then will come with 1 or 2 years of Disney+. It’s unclear whether the freebie will remain exclusive to the Netherlands, but it might, especially because the Netherlands was the market of choice for The Walt Disney Company to test its new streaming service on Samsung TVs before it launched more widely.

Disney+ costs € 6.99 a month in the Netherlands, meaning that the ongoing offer can save you up to € 168 over the course of two years. Not a bad deal, especially if you’re going through subscription fatigue and the idea of signing up to yet another subscription service turns you off, yet you still want to see if The Mandalorian lives up to the hype.

Samsung CES 2020 booth is the largest, Galaxy Home Mini could be there

Samsung’s appearance at CES 2020 will be unmatched, as the company’s 3,370 square meeters booth will be the largest among all the other participants. Although Samsung’s entire CES 2020 schedule remains unknown, the company is expected to unveil numerous products across different categories, ranging from IoT, AI, and 5G networking to home appliances and TVs.

Additionally, Samsung might also be bringing the Galaxy Home Mini at CES 2020, according to a recent report from The Korea Times. However, even if the smart speaker will be showcased in Las Vegas, there’s no guarantee that it will be released around the same time given Samsung’s slow progress in this area. Its first smart speaker dubbed the Galaxy Home has been eluding the market for over a year now. It, too, was showcased at CES 2019, yet it’s still nowhere to be found.

What else can we expect from Samsung at CES 2020?

As reported a few weeks ago, Samsung Electronics CEO, Kim Huyn-seok, will host a keynote at CES 2020 discussing the company’s role in ‘shaping a new consumer experience for global citizens.’

More to the point, the company is expected to showcase a digital vehicle cockpit system – presumably, the same one we’ve seen at IFA 2019 – as well as ‘robotic products that utilize our AI, IoT, and 5G technologies.’ It’s also expected to unveil an improved 8K upscaling solution for smart TVs.

Although not every product demonstrated at CES 2020 will be commercialized in or around January, Samsung is already turning heads as it secured 46 CES 2020 Innovation Awards for outstanding design and engineering. Its booth will likely be the shining jewel of the event and we’re eager to see all of this new tech in action. We’ll be on the show floor bringing you all the information you need, so make sure you tune in after New Year’s Day.

Samsung’s Galaxy Upcycling program still lives, and it could take off soon

Some of our readers might recall Samsung’s Galaxy Upcycling program unveiled a couple of years ago. It was meant to give mobile users ideas on how they can repurpose older Galaxy hardware and reduce e-waste.

Not a lot has come out of this idea over the past couple of years and the program is still technically not live yet, but Samsung hasn’t forgotten about it and it might bring it to some markets, including Vietnam, soon. Not through hardware repurposed as a Bitcoin mining rig, but through a medical eye screening device made out of old Galaxy phones.

Mark Newton, head of corporate sustainability at Samsung Electronics America, talked again about the program at a recent conference, where the company also demonstrated the concept of a medical device capable of screening for eye diseases. Following the Galaxy Upcycling program philosophy, the device was built from an older camera-equipped Galaxy phone that’s no longer used for its original primary function. There’s no word on when this concept might become a reality, but it did show that older devices can still be useful.

This is the highest order of a circular economy strategy

Samsung has been making great progress in reducing e-waste and achieving a circular economy. The company has had at least a couple of campaigns this year to promote recycling, and Samsung Display was recently awarded a Gold certificate by UL for its waste-recycling efforts.

But recycling and upcycling are two different concepts. The former aims to recycle raw materials from older products and use those materials in newer devices. The latter aims to repurpose existing products, such as Galaxy smartphones, and put that processing power to use in different ways.

These products have enough processing power to do a lot of things‘ claimed Mark Newton, adding that the Upcycling program represents ‘the highest order of a circular economy strategy.’

A medical device built from an old Galaxy smartphone, capable of screening for eye diseases, is a prime example of how old hardware can be repurposed with the help of custom software. If a real product based on this concept would exist, it could prove useful in countries with emerging economies, where healthcare diagnostic tools may be in short supply.

According to the recent report by GreenBiz citing Mark Newton, Samsung wants to test the eye screening solution presented at the conference in several markets, with Vietnam being the first. Having said that, we might start hearing more about Samsung’s Galaxy Upcycling program in the near future. Readers who might want to be updated on the company’s progress on the matter can visit the official Galaxy Upcycling page and subscribe via email.

PSA: Samsung didn’t remove the Wi-Fi sharing option in One UI 2.0

Samsung has started rolling out the Android 10-based One UI 2.0 update to its Galaxy devices since last month. Some of the users who received the update might have observed that the Wi-Fi sharing option is missing from the Mobile Hotspot toggle menu in the quick settings panel. While it is true Samsung has removed the shortcut, the functionality itself is not gone. The company has just buried the feature and made it a little difficult to discover in the latest version of One UI.

You can still access the Wi-Fi sharing option in One UI 2.0 by long-pressing the Mobile Hotspot toggle and tapping the three dots on the top-right corner of the subsequent screen. Compared to the older shortcut, the new placement takes two additional taps to enable Wi-Fi sharing. It’s unclear why Samsung decided to make this seemingly inefficient UI tweak.

Though many Galaxy users will encounter and possibly hate this change in One UI 2.0, Samsung appears to have implemented this with One UI 1.5 itself. Devices like the Galaxy Note 10 and the A50s, which launched with One UI 1.5 onboard, don’t have the Wi-Fi sharing shortcut even on Android Pie. So, this change will impact only those who are upgrading from One UI 1.0/1.1 to One UI 2.0.

Check out these nice Galaxy A51 macro camera samples

It has been a week since Samsung unveiled the Galaxy A51. This is the first of Samsung’s 2020 Galaxy A series. One major difference this phone has compared to its predecessor is the addition of a macro camera.

We took it for a spin at the Galaxy A51 launch event in Vietnam and were fairly impressed by it. Some nice Galaxy A51 macro camera samples have now been posted online as well, giving us a good idea of what this camera is capable of.

Galaxy A51 macro camera samples show great detail

The Galaxy A51 is Samsung’s first Galaxy smartphone to feature a macro camera. It’s a 5-megapixel camera that will let you get very close to a subject and capture much more detail than you normally would using a telephoto lens.

As we pointed out in our Galaxy A51 hands-on, you do have to get really close to the subject in order to get it into focus. Once the subject is in focus, the results are surprisingly good. That’s something we see in these samples as well. The camera manages to capture considerable detail so it will be quite possible to take some good-looking artsy photos with the Galaxy A51.

You can expect a similar result on the Galaxy A71 as well which also features the same macro camera. It’s also highly likely that we’ll see Samsung use the macro camera in more handsets next year.

Do you like what you see so far? Would you be willing to purchase the Galaxy A51 because of its macro camera? Let us know in the comments below.

Samsung loses Vietnam market share but enjoys Galaxy Note 10 success

Samsung’s smartphone market share in Vietnam has been following a declining trajectory throughout the year, and a recent report citing research firm GfK reveals that October has been the company’s lowest-performing month of 2019.

That’s not necessarily saying that Samsung has recorded its lowest revenues in Vietnam in October. Samsung may have sold fewer handsets leading to a smaller market share, but the ones it did sell have had a higher price tag than usual.

Galaxy Note 10 was in high demand in Vietnam throughout October

According to VnExpress citing a retailer in Vietnam, roughly 45% of all the smartphone models sold by Samsung in October were part of the Galaxy Note 10 lineup. The company’s smartphone market share stood at 38.45% at the end of October, down from 40.75% a month earlier.

The company recorded an impressive 50.86% market share in March 2019, which was its highest point of the year. Except for July and August when it spiked up a couple of points, its overall market share throughout the year has been declining. Perhaps with the release of the new Galaxy A (2020) series, the company will regain some of that lost chunk of the market in the next couple of quarters.

Thankfully, even if the company lost roughly 12% of the market compared to where it was 10 months ago, Samsung has maintained its spot as the leading smartphone vendor in Vietnam. It’s followed by OPPO and Xiaomi, whose mobile products account for 25.2% and 10.2% of the market, respectively.

Samsung is considering large investments in microLED mass production

Samsung is considering making large investments in microLED panel production in the first half of next year, according to industry insiders cited by ETNews. Component suppliers are reportedly waiting for Samsung’s final decision regarding the production size of microLED panels, which may come shortly after CES 2020.

Some industry watchers are positive that Samsung will push microLED into mass production next year, as the company has reportedly improved its expertise on this emerging display technology to the point where it would be possible to mass-produce plenty of microLED panels to meet the relatively high demand.

One component supplier who’s hoping to benefit from Samsung’s microLED endeavor said ‘there is a good chance that Samsung Electronics will carry out its investment next year.’

Other industry watchers are not so confident

While some investors and suppliers believe that Samsung will likely make a large investment in microLED mass production early next year, other industry watchers are not as positive.

An unnamed display industry expert cited by the Korean publication believes that production costs are still very high for microLED components, so even if Samsung has the knowledge and resources to pull this of, pushing microLED panels into mass production next year would still not be profitable enough.

Just as there have been rumors about mass-production of microLEDs last year and this year, chance that there will be a change next year is low‘ said the source.

There’s no arguing that Samsung’s microLED-based The Wall costs a literal fortune. The series comprising The Wall Luxury and The Wall Pro was released in India a couple of weeks ago for the starting price of a whopping $490,000, or nearly half a million USD. Unless the company manages to bring prices a whole lot lower than that, the customer base will remain fairly small, and mass production probably wouldn’t be necessary given the relatively low demand.

All in all, Samsung is planning some interesting TV-related reveals at CES 2020, and perhaps the recent reports are accurate in saying that the company will decide whether it’s worth pushing microLED panels into mass production in the first half of the year. We’ll keep you posted.

Samsung to make chips for China’s Baidu in notable first partnership

Samsung makes chips for a lot of different companies like Qualcomm and Intel. It has never had such a partnership with Baidu before, the company that’s often referred to as China’s Google. However, it was announced today that Samsung will now be making chips for Baidu.

The Korean giant will be manufacturing Baidu’s new cloud-to-edge artificial intelligence chip called Baidu KUNLUN. The development has been completed and the chip will enter mass production from early next year.

Samsung enters into first foundry partnership with Baidu

Baidu KUNLUN is going to be built on the Chinese company’s own XPU neural processor architecture and fabricated on Samsung’s 14nm process technology with the I-Cube package solution. This solution integrates a System-on-Chip and a High Bandwidth Memory on a silicon interposer to form one single package to increase electrical transference. What this means is that the overall chip will take up less space in devices.

“Baidu KUNLUN is an important milestone for Samsung Foundry as we’re expanding our business area beyond mobile to datacenter applications by developing and mass-producing AI chips,” said Ryan Lee, VP of Foundry Marketing at Samsung Electronics.

The AI chip has a 512GBps memory bandwidth and can supply up to 260 Tera operations per second at 150 watts. This will allow Baidu to support a variety of functions with the chip such as large-scale AI workloads, autonomous driving, speech recognition, natural language processing and more.

This is the first foundry partnership between Samsung and Baidu which allows Samsung to expand its foundry business into high-performance computing chips. This leaves the door open for other companies to seek the Korean foundry’s services for their own HPC chips. This partnership is also notable owing to the overall geopolitical situation.

Chinese companies have increasingly been looking for alternatives to chips that were previously sourced from semiconductor companies in the United States. The ongoing trade war between China and the United States may just be adding to that search for alternatives. Having Baidu’s stamp of approval might lead to Samsung winning more foundry customers from China in the future. It’s an important partnership as Samsung seeks to significantly increase its earnings from the foundry business in the years to come.

ESTV launches on Samsung TV Plus bringing 24-7 linear esports content

ESTV, the first-ever dedicated esports channel is launching on Samsung TV Plus, the company announced this week. ESTV is bringing esports content to Samsung’s ad-supported platform where it should be available on all of the company’s smart TVs launched in 2016 and later.

Samsung TV Plus gets more gaming-oriented content

ESTV is the first channel dedicated to esports and gives viewers access to a wide variety of gaming-related content, from gaming news and competitive gaming team analysis to syndicated late-night talk shows, live streaming of events, and interviews.

Samsung TV Plus seems like a great fit for ESTV, not only because it’s a free, ad-supported platform, but also because Samsung is already catering to the gaming audience to a degree, with the release of its gaming monitors for casual and competitive players. Meanwhile, on the mobile side of things, Samsung offers features like PlayGalaxy Link and Discord integration with its Game Launcher, so the company is no stranger to the concept of video games.

ESTV was released in the United States earlier in May as a 24-7 live linear channel. It launched on several platforms but it remains exclusive to the United States as of this writing. In other words, ESTV is now available on Samsung TV Plus only stateside. But if you do reside in the US and decide to check it out, you’re welcomed to share your thoughts in the comment section below.

Samsung details the Galaxy S11’s 108 MP ISOCELL camera

Samsung has published more details about its 108-megapixel ISOCELL Bright HMX sensor in a blog post and the accompanying videos on its website. The Korean company hyping up its camera sensors is nothing new, but this is interesting given that the Galaxy S11 is supposed to use the sensor for its primary camera, going by all the leaks and reports so far.

Interestingly, though the next Galaxy flagship is at least a couple of months away from launch, the said camera sensor has already made its debut in the Mi Note 10 last month. For what it’s worth, the sensor has proven to be quite a performer when paired even with the mid-range Snapdragon 730G chipset in the Mi Note 10. However, we will know its true potential when Samsung pairs the sensor with flagship chipsets and top-notch image processing in its upcoming flagship.

Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX the first image sensor in the industry to surpass 100 million pixels and also the first to feature a larger 1/1.33-inch sensor size. The sensor comes with Smart-ISO technology that intelligently activates lower ISO in daylight and high ISO in low light for better dynamic range and less noise.

The sensor comes with Samsung’s ISOCELL Plus pixel isolation technology, which places a barrier around each pixel to prevent it from being contaminated by the colors of the adjacent pixels (also known as pixel crosstalk). The company says this is a major improvement over the previous sensors that were prone to quality degradation due to the crosstalk.

Samsung also says its Tetracell technology, which merges clusters of four pixels in the single pixels and thereby turning 0.8μm pixels into 1.6μm pixels, will improve low-light camera performance. It’s worth pointing out here that the same technology is already used in the company’s other sensors, and the results don’t seem to match the hype. We have to wait and see if this changes with the Galaxy S11.

To be clear, Samsung hasn’t officially confirmed this is going to be the sensor used in the Galaxy S11, but there is growing evidence to suggest that maybe the case. All this hype for a camera sensor, one that already made its debut on a competitor’s device, is indicative of the same. The Korean tech giant is expected to announce its next Galaxy flagship in the third week of February. As the launch date nears, we can expect more details about the device and its camera capabilities.

Exclusive: Samsung has a new tablet in development likely with an S Pen

The next S Pen touting device from Samsung will be the Galaxy Note 10 Lite but it may not be the only one. We hear that Samsung is working on a new tablet that may possibly have an S Pen as well.

A new Samsung tablet bearing model number SM-P610 is in development alongside the SM-P615, which will most likely be the LTE variant of this tablet. Since the device is in the early stages of development, it may be a while before we see it in the flesh.

New Samsung tablet with an S Pen in development

Samsung is no stranger to launching tablets that come with an S Pen. The 2019 Galaxy Tab A with S Pen is one such example. It was launched almost nine months ago. The Galaxy Tab A with S Pen (SM-P205) is a fairly mid-range affair with specs like an Exynos 7904 processor, 3GB RAM and a 4,200mAh battery.

It goes without saying that this new tablet won’t be the successor to the Galaxy Tab S6. So it’s not going to have flagship-level specs. Perhaps it may be more of a premium mid-range device, but we’ll have to wait and see in which direction Samsung goes with regards to the specs.

Since the development is currently in the early stages, all that’s know about the SM-P610/615 is that it’s going to be available with both 64GB and 128GB of internal storage. As one would expect, Samsung is going to offer a book cover accessory for this tablet as well.

We expect to hear more information about this upcoming tablet in the coming days. So be sure to check back in with us if you’re interested in a Samsung tablet with an S Pen.

Galaxy Fold pre-orders kick off in the Netherlands on December 20

Samsung may not have sold one million units of the Galaxy Fold despite what the rumors might have said, but the company is making that milestone more plausible by launching its foldable phone in yet another country. The Galaxy Fold will go up for pre-order in the Netherlands on December 20 from Samsung’s retail and online stores and carriers KPN and T-Mobile. Pre-ordered devices will reach customers on January 10. The Netherlands is getting the LTE variant of the Fold with a price tag of €2020.

While the Fold’s official launch in the Netherlands is taking place quite late in the game, the country was originally supposed to be in the initial list of release markets for the device. After deciding to delay the April launch of the Galaxy Fold owing to durability concerns caused by design oversights, Samsung decided to focus on bigger markets where it has a larger consumer base. But the wait for those in the Netherlands who were looking forward to getting the innovative and game-changing foldable is finally over.

Buying the Galaxy Fold will get consumers access to a 24/7 telephone helpline for one-to-one contact with experts, but it seems the cheap one-time screen replacement will not be available for Dutch customers. That offer, which reduces the price of screen replacement to €130, is supposed to be valid for purchases made before December 31, but it looks like Samsung is using the January 10 release date as an excuse to not extend that offer to consumers in the Netherlands.
