No, the Galaxy S9+ hasn’t surfaced on Geekbench

Last week, we reported that the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ could enter mass production as soon as next month—and now it would appear that a number of engineers have been armed with prototypes, as a handset, which is believed to be the latter, has been spotted on Geekbench’s online database.

Related: Galaxy S9 design possibly hinted by sketchy CAD leak

As expected, the listing doesn’t reveal a great deal about the Galaxy S9+, other than that it ships with the Exynos 9810 processor Samsung took the wraps off last week and 4GB of RAM, challenging recent rumors claiming that the firm’s next flagship would be equipped with 6GB of RAM as standard.

Well, maybe not.

It’s possible to falsify benchmark results—and that’s exactly what’s happened here

We should mention, however, that it’s possible to falsify benchmark results—and that’s exactly what’s happened here. How do we know? Because the tricker in question forgot—or wasn’t able—to alter the Processor Identifier, which resembles the SoC used on the likes of the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6.

Galaxy J3 (2016) owners have been waiting to get a taste of Nougat on Verizon for quite some time now. The largest mobile carrier in the US has finally released the Android 7.0 Nougat update for the Galaxy J3 (2016).

Verizon has started rolling out the firmware update over-the-air. It will soon go live for all Galaxy J3 (2016) owners on its network. As you can expect, it brings all of the features that come part and parcel of Android 7.0 Nougat. To find out more about those features, check out our What’s New With Nougat series.

Big Red is rolling out firmware version J320VVRU2BQJ1 for the Galaxy J3 (2016) on its network. It comes with the August security patch which is a bit sad. Samsung has already started rolling out the November security patch so at least it could have been bumped up to October.

The update improves voice call performance and brings fixes for a variety of minor issues. The performance of the proximity sensor has been improved as well.

Verizon is rolling out this firmware update over-the-air. Users can check to see if it’s available from the Software updates menu as well. It shouldn’t be long before the Galaxy J3 (2016) Android 7.0 Nougat update goes live for all users on the carrier.

Microsoft Edition Galaxy S8 now available from Microsoft’s online store

Microsoft has started selling the Microsoft Edition of the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ on its online store in the United States. The handsets are priced at $724.99 and $824.99, respectively—but you’ll be able to save an impressive $150 if you wait until Black Friday to pick one up.

Unlike the standard Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+, the Microsoft Edition comes pre-loaded with a slew of the firm’s productivity tools, including Cortana, Outlook, Skype and its brand new Microsoft Launcher, which makes it easier than ever to access important documents and files.

For those unaware, the Galaxy S8 is near-identical to the Galaxy S8+ from both a design and internal perspective. It features the same Exynos 8895/Snapdragon 835 processor, 4GB of RAM, a 12-megapixel rear-facing camera and an 8-megapixel front-facing camera.

Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ aren’t identical, however

The two differ when it comes to battery life and screen size, however; the former sports a 5.8-inch Infinity Display (1,440 x 2,960 pixels) and a 3,300mAh battery, while the latter—our favorite of the two—touts a 6.2-inch Infinity Display (1,440 x 2,960 pixels) and a 3,500mAh cell.

Galaxy S8 Android 8.0 Oreo beta 2 released in the US

Samsung rolled out the second beta firmware for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ in the United Kingdom last week. It officially launched the Galaxy S8 Android 8.0 Oreo beta program earlier this month. The second beta firmware is now rolling out for beta test participants in the United States.

Samsung is rolling out firmware version G955USQU1ZQK6 in the United States. It has released the second beta firmware in the UK and US so far. South Korea is the only other country where the beta program is live now so it’s going to get this firmware soon as well.

Galaxy S8 Android 8.0 beta 2

The second Galaxy S8 Android 8.0 beta firmware brings the October security patch. It also improves stability of the DeX mode and the Launcher.

Beta participants will also find new clock styles for the Always On Display and the lock screen. They can also adjust the transparency of notifications. The handset’s screen can now go dark when it’s mirroring between the phone and TV using Smart View.

Samsung hasn’t confirmed as yet when it’s going to expand the beta to additional markets. Reports have suggested that it might go live in countries like India.

Four things I love about the Galaxy Note 8

The Galaxy Note 8 was an important device for Samsung, carrying the weight of ensuring the Note lineup comes back with a bang on its shoulders. It’s fair to say the Korean giant succeeded in hitting it out of the park with the Note 8. This phone doesn’t burn up like its ill-fated predecessor, has the best display on an Android smartphone, and finally brings a dual camera setup to Samsung’s smartphone lineup, while keeping all the other features that made the Galaxy S8 and S8+ so impressive.

We called the Galaxy Note 8 a device that’s “more than just a Galaxy S8 with an S Pen” in our review, which we published nearly two months ago. I personally didn’t start using the Note 8 until a week after our review went live, and my love for this phone has only deepened with each passing day. Frankly, I don’t see anything particularly wrong with the Note 8, but there are a few things that I like above all else.

Wondering what they are? Read on to find out, and at the end, maybe you can tell me what you like most about Samsung’s latest flagship.

The display is gorgeous

Four things I love about the Galaxy Note 8

You have to use the Galaxy Note 8 for a few days to truly see how awesome that 6.3-inch Super AMOLED display is. The Galaxy S8 display was great, but Samsung made further strides in the months after and added several improvements for the panel used on the Note 8, including fixing the color balance issue that plagued the edges of the S8 and S8+ display. It’s also brighter outdoors, which has made it easier for me to take pictures of the phone for the articles here on SamMobile.

I also like that the screen doesn’t curve as much at the edges, which makes it more comfortable to use the S Pen and also gives the phone a professional, more sober look. Again, you have to experience the Note 8 to understand why the display’s so good; it’s a joy to use every day, more so than the one on the Galaxy S8 and S8+, and it will be interesting to see what Samsung brings to the table with next year’s Galaxy S9.

It’s fast, smooth, and doesn’t show signs of slowing down

Four things I love about the Galaxy Note 8

I don’t know why, but Samsung seems to work in extra optimization on the software front for Note devices compared to the Galaxy S flagship(s) that launch in the same year. Maybe the company finds the extra months of development useful for eking out the last ounce of performance from that particular year’s newest Snapdragon or Exynos chip, or maybe it doesn’t, as otherwise, it would be able to bring those improvements to the Galaxy S devices through software updates.

In any case, the Note 8 benefits greatly, and it’s not showing any signs of slowing down (the 6GB of RAM no doubt helps). Apart from maybe a slight delay in responding when I unlock the phone, performance has been consistently fast and smooth and better than the S8, which has started to stutter noticeably for many of us here at SamMobile. I’ve not seen anything give the Note 8 a real challenge (at least not when it comes to my use cases), and I’m hoping it continues to perform like a flagship should in a few months down the line.

The 2x camera zoom is useful

Four things I love about the Galaxy Note 8

I didn’t think I would benefit much from the dual camera setup on the Note 8, but it turns out I was wrong. While I’ve stopped using Live Focus, I continue to use the 2x zoom capability almost every time I use the rear camera. There are plenty of scenarios where it comes handy. For example, we were celebrating my girlfriend’s birthday on Saturday night, and the photos I took of the cake cutting moments include standard photos of everyone present and zoomed in shots of people trying to rub cake on each other’s faces.

I also love taking pictures of my car, and that’s also where the zoom functionality helps. It’s great that photos taken by the zoom lens have virtually the same image quality as photos taken by the primary camera in all but the most challenging low-light conditions, for which the phone simply uses digital zoom on the main camera. Since both rear camera lenses are optically stabilized, blurry photos are few and far between, which is an added advantage.

Battery life has been surprisingly good

Four things I love about the Samsung Galaxy Note 8

I have been using the Galaxy Note 8 with two SIM cards active since day one, and the phone has impressed me with its endurance. For some reason, battery life is better for me on the Note 8 compared to the Galaxy S8+, and it’s also more consistent. I haven’t seen the phone drain too quickly for no reason even once; this might be down to Samsung doubling down on battery-related optimization to make up for the smaller battery, and it’s certainly allayed my initial concerns for battery life on the Note 8.

As I said at the beginning of this article, I don’t really have any complaints about the Galaxy Note 8. Okay, so that fingerprint sensor continues to be poorly placed, Samsung could have opted for a bigger battery, it’s high time the company started putting stereo loudspeakers on its flagships, and the Oreo update will likely take a few months to arrive. But overall, the Note 8 is a joy to use and excels in almost everything that matters. It’s also the most well-priced flagship in the latter half of 2017 and offers more bang for the buck than its competition (like the Pixel 2 XL or the iPhone X), making it worthy of consideration for anyone who wants nothing short of the best value for their hard-earned money.

SamMobile Daily Recap: November 13, 2017 — Galaxy A5 (2017), Galaxy J1 (2016) and more!

Galaxy A5 (2016) update for India adds S Bike mode and Samsung Members app

A new update that is rolling out to the Galaxy A5 (2016) in India brings Samsung’s S Bike mode and the Samsung Members app to the device. Samsung has announced this update in the Samsung Members app (the very same app that the update adds to the phone). The announcement seems to be for the Indian version of the phone right now, but it could roll out to other countries where Samsung had launched the S Bike feature.

What is S Bike mode? It’s Samsung’s implementation of a do not disturb mode for those who commute on bikes. When enabled, S Bike mode disables all incoming notifications and plays a prerecorded message for callers. Should it be an emergency, callers can dial 1 to make the call go through to the rider, but the latter would need to slow down to a speed below 10 kilometers per hour to be able to answer. S Bike also logs information on a user’s rides and supports quick activation via NFC tags.

Galaxy A5 (2016) update for India adds S Bike mode and Samsung Members app

Samsung Members, meanwhile, is Samsung’s primary support app and boasts of a user community where the company’s officials offer regular tips and tricks and answers to user queries. Discussion for beta versions of major Android upgrades for Samsung’s flagships also takes place in the Samsung Members community. For many devices, the Samsung Members app is available on the Play Store and Galaxy Apps, but we guess that isn’t the case for the 2016 Galaxy A5 and Galaxy A7 models. It’s also unclear if this update includes the November security patch, which rolled out to the 2017 models of the Galaxy A5 and Galaxy A7 earlier today.

Have you received the update yet?

Using a Galaxy A5 (2016) in India? You should see a notification once the update arrives on your handset. If you’re unwilling to wait, you can see if the update is available by going to the Settings » Software update menu and tapping on the Download updates manually option. Do let us know if you have received the update by leaving a comment below.

Bixby Tip: Enable or disable Bixby’s voice wake-up feature with its quick toggle

The dedicated Bixby button on the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8 is no longer the nuisance it was in the early days of Bixby. Samsung initially released an update that allowed for preventing the Bixby button from firing up Bixby Home and then proceeded to make it completely non-functional with an update that prevents the button from waking up the display as well. Even when the Bixby button is disabled, however, you can continue to use Bixby Voice to issue vocal commands, but did you know there’s a quick toggle that lets you disable Bixby’s voice wake-up functionality with a single tap?

Bixby’s always-on voice wake-up feature doesn’t drain a noticeable amount of battery if left enabled, nor does it get in the way if you don’t speak the Hi Bixby command (other than a few accidental wake-ups if the command’s sensitivity is set to high). But the toggle is nice to have for those who don’t wish for Bixby’s voice recognition to be running at all times. It also acts as a faster way to disable the feature if you have already turned off Bixby Home (and the Bixby button), as otherwise, you would need to use Bixby Voice to be able to go into Bixby Home so you can disable voice wake-up. Of course, the toggle is also necessary if you have both Bixby Home and Bixby Voice disabled in Bixby settings and suddenly want access to either feature again.

Wondering why you haven’t seen this toggle on your Galaxy S8 or Note 8? Well, it’s because the toggle is hidden by default and requires one to edit the quick toggles panel and add the voice wake-up toggle to the list of visible toggles. Confused about how you would do this? Just follow the step-by-step instructions below!

How to access Bixby voice wake-up toggle on the Galaxy S8 or Note 8

Step 1: Swipe down from the top edge of the display to access the notification shade, then swipe down once again to bring up the quick toggles panel.

Step 2: Tap the three-dot button on the top right, then select Button order from the options that show up.

Bixby Tip: Enable or disable Bixby’s voice wake-up feature with its quick toggle

Step 3: Notice the Voice wake-up toggle at the bottom in the area with the grey background? Press and hold this toggle, then drag it upwards and place it wherever it is you want the toggle to be. Remember that there are two pages of visible toggles, so if you wish to have the toggle on the second page, you must first drag it to the edge of the screen, wait for the second toggles page to show up, then let go of the toggle once you have placed it in the desired location.

Bixby Tip: Enable or disable Bixby’s voice wake-up feature with its quick toggle

Step 4: Once you have placed the toggle in the desired location, hit the Done button to save your quick toggles setup.

Bixby Tip: Enable or disable Bixby’s voice wake-up feature with its quick toggle

That’s it. You can now enable or disable Bixby’s voice wake-up functionality using its dedicated toggle from the quick toggles panel. Should you have any doubts about the steps given above, be sure to leave a comment, and we will do our best to help you out.

Galaxy S9 design possibly hinted by sketchy CAD leak

We recently asked our readers about the changes that they would like to see in the Galaxy S9 design. Most of you just want Samsung to stick with the impressive design that it introduced with the Galaxy S8. A sketchy CAD leak has surfaced online today and it might possibly give us an early glimpse of the Galaxy S9 design.

One can understandably raise questions about the authenticity of these images given the very low resolution and the lack of any clear indication that this is indeed Samsung’s next flagship smartphone.

Galaxy S9 design

The Galaxy S9 will be quite similar to the Galaxy S8 from the front is this leak is believed. We already expect the Infinity Display to be present. Samsung might make the bezels even slimmer to give it a more sleek look. It looks like Samsung won’t be doing away with the physical Bixby button after all.

The company might switch things up a bit at the back. We can see a vertical dual camera system with a fingerprint sensor underneath. Several reports have already claimed that the rumored in-display fingerprint sensor isn’t coming to the Galaxy S9.

It’s likely that the handset’s fingerprint sensor will be located at the back. Since the Galaxy Note 8 has a dual camera system it’s not that difficult to believe that the Galaxy S9 will get it too.

This leak doesn’t really make any groundbreaking revelations about the Galaxy S9 design, besides, Samsung isn’t rumored to make any major design changes to the handset anyway. Even if these CAD images are fake they aren’t setting any unrealistic design expectations from Samsung’s next flagship smartphone.

Galaxy J1 (2016) now receiving November security update

Samsung has started rolling out this month’s security update for the Galaxy J1 (2016), following its release for the Galaxy A5 (2017) and Galaxy A7 (2017) earlier today. The upgrade, according to the firm, bundles patches for 61 vulnerabilities in the open-source Android operating system and six for its own modified software, as well as a fix for the KRACK Wi-Fi exploit.

Related: Samsung rolling out November security update to the Galaxy A5 (2017)

We have to say, it’s a little strange that Samsung has released the latest security update for the Galaxy J1, Galaxy A5 (2017) and Galaxy A7 (2017) before the Galaxy Note 8 and Galaxy S8, the latter of which was treated to last month’s upgrade in India earlier today. But rest assured: it’s on the way to the flagships—and could start making the rounds as soon as later today.

Here’s how to check to see if the update’s ready for your Galaxy J1 (2016)

To check to see if the release is ready for your Galaxy J1 (2016), open Settings, select Software Update, then tap Download Updates Manually. If you don’t, however, feel like heading down that route, you can always wait until you receive an alert instructing you to install the OTA. There’s a chance it could take a little longer to arrive, though.
