Samsung unveils new SSD with PCIe Gen 4 support and E1.S form factor

Samsung announced that it has developed a new SSD (Solid State Drive) with support for the new PCIe Gen. 4 standard and an E1.S form factor. The announcement was made at the OCP (Open Compute Project) Virtual Global Summit. The South Korean storage giant also announced that it is introducing a reference design for the E1.S-based storage system.

The company’s new PM9A3 SSD uses Samsung’s sixth-generation 3-bit V-NAND technology. It will be available in three form factors: E1.S, M.2, and U.2. The E1.S and U.2 versions of the SSD can reach peak sequential read and write speeds of up to 6,500 MB/s and 3,500 MB/s, respectively. They also support up to 900,000 random read IOPS and 180,000 random write IOPS.

The PM9A3’s high data transfer rates are possible due to the PCIe Gen. 4 (x4) interface, which has twice the data bandwidth compared to PCIe Gen. 3 interface, and the dedicated hardware accelerator. The new SSD will be available from 960GB to 7.68TB storage versions.

Samsung PM9A3 SSD’s E.1 design will offer more power and space efficiency

Samsung hopes that PM9A3’s E1.S design with the EDSFF connector becomes the industry’s most popular SSD lineup. The company says that data centers that are using the U.2 SSDs can use the E1.S SSD form factor to add more SSDs per server by freeing up 1U additional space. It also allows engineers to lower the cost of ownership.

The South Korean storage chip leader will also provide a collaborative server reference design to assist data center managers in quickly adopting the new E1.S form factor. For M.2 SSD users, E1.S will offer more SSDs per rack unit and the PCIe Gen. 4 standard. The E1.S drive form factor will also offer major major benefits of 2.5-inch U.2 SSDs for U1 servers.

Jongyoul Lee, Senior Vice President of Samsung’s Memory Software Development Team, said, “Offering the most 1U server-optimized form-factor, the PM9A3 will improve space utilization, add PCIe Gen4 speeds, enable increased capacity and more. We see it eventually becoming the most sought-after storage solution on the market for tier one and tier two cloud data center servers, and one of the more cost-effective.”

Galaxy A Quantum launched in South Korea as SK Telecom exclusive

Samsung and SK Telecom launched the Galaxy A Quantum in South Korea today. It is the world’s first 5G smartphone with a quantum random number generator (QRNG) chipset, and it is exclusive to SK Telecom’s network. The Galaxy A Quantum is a rebranded Galaxy A71 5G, and it is priced at KRW 649,000 (around $530).

The Galaxy A Quantum will be available for pre-order starting tomorrow. The phone will go on sale in Korea from May 22. Those who pre-order the phone will be eligible to receive the Galaxy Buds for free. Those who purchase the Galaxy A Quantum after the pre-order phase will get a KRW 50,000 (around $40) discount coupon to buy the Galaxy Buds.

The phone features the SKT IDQ S2Q000 QRNG chipset that was developed by SK Telecom’s Switzerland-based subsidiary ID Quantique. It generators random numbers through quantum-crypto technology and creates secure keys that cannot be predicted, thus enhancing the security of the device.

Galaxy A Quantum specs

The Galaxy A Quantum features a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED Infinity-O display with Full HD+ resolution and in-display fingerprint reader. It has a quad-camera setup on the rear, consisting of a 64MP primary camera, a 12MP ultrawide-angle camera, a 5MP macro camera, and a 5MP depth sensor. At the front, the smartphone has a 32MP selfie camera.

The phone runs Android 10 with One UI 2.0. The Galaxy A Quantum is equipped with the Exynos 980 processor, 8GB RAM, 128GB storage, and a microSD card slot. Its connectivity features include GPS, 5G, LTE, Wi-Fi ac, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, USB Type-C port, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. It is powered by a 4,500mAh battery and supports 25W fast charging.

It comes with Samsung Pay and a QRNG chipset. The phone will be available in black, blue, and silver.

How is the QRNG chipset used in the Galaxy A Quantum?

Samsung Galaxy A Quantum QRNG SKT IDQ S2Q000 Security Chip

The SKT IDQ S2Q00, which is the world’s smallest QRNG chipset (at 2.5mm x 2.5mm), uses an LED and a CMOS image sensor. It creates truly random numbers with unpredictable patterns. The CMOS image sensor is used to capture the quantum randomness from the image noise that is emitted by the LED.

The QRNG chipset enhances the security of various applications such as SK Pay, T ID login, and Initial. T ID is used for logging into various online services, including 11th Street, FLO, T Map, T membership, Wavve, Who, and others, and the service is used by over 19 million customers.

Initial is a blockchain mobile electronic certification service that is used to issue and submit various personal certifications without a need to reproduce a physical one. SK Telecom plans to expand the use of QRNG chipset and enhanced security for more services in the future. You can read more about the QRNG chipset works here.

Leaked Exynos 880 specs show it as underclocked version of Exynos 980

After launching the Exynos 980 for mid-range smartphones, it appears that Samsung is close to launching yet another mid-range SoC. The unannounced Exynos 880 chipset has appeared in benchmarks, but not in a Samsung phone. It looks like Vivo will launch one more phone with a mid-range Exynos processor.

The Exynos 880 has been found inside the Vivo Y70s 5G through the Geekbench results database. The chipset features two ARM Cortex-A77 cores clocked at 2GHz, six ARM Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 1.8GHz, and the ARM Mali-G76 GPU. The name of the phone (found on Weibo) also points towards an integrated 5G modem.

Overall, the chipset seems quite similar to the Exynos 980, but with lower clock speeds for the Cortex-A77 CPU cores. It is also possible that Samsung has underclocked the GPU or removed some of its cores to make it more affordable than the Exynos 980.

The Exynos 880 SoC scored 641 points and 1,814 points in single-core and multi-core CPU tests, respectively. In comparison, the Exynos 980 SoC scored 679 points and 1,879 points in single-core and multi-core tests, respectively. The Exynos 880’s CPU performance is more or less similar to the Snapdragon 765G.

Samsung could launch mid-range Galaxy smartphones with the Exynos 880 chipset in the future. The Galaxy A21s (SM-A217F) was recently leaked with the Exynos 850 chipset. The South Korean smartphone giant could announce the Exynos 850 and the Exynos 880 at the same time.

This is the biggest Galaxy A21s leak yet, press render galore

Samsung is preparing the Galaxy A21s for a seemingly imminent release, but right now, the upcoming budget phone is the subject of a major leak revealing its exterior design in great detail. A gallery of official press renders energed via WinFuture, showcasing the phone from nearly every angle in three color options including black, blue, and white. Red is missing, but regardless, these colors are not pure and have a prismatic effect.

The Galaxy A21s has a rectangular main camera cutout resembling that of the Galaxy A51. It has a similar L-shaped quad camera pattern but it relocates the flash module next to the upper sensor rather than keeping it in the middle.

Physical buttons on the left, fingerprint reader on the back

The rich press render galleries below reveals nearly every design characteristic of the Galaxy A21s, except for the upper and lower edges where a 3.5mm audio port should reside. This is a budget phone hovering around the 200 euros mark, and therefore it will have a regular headphone jack in addition to the USB-C port.

The Galaxy A21 has a volume rocker and a power/side button on the left edge, a SIM tray on the right edge, and a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, according to this leak. The display is of the Infinity-O variety with the circular cutout positioned in the upper-left corner. It also appears to have a thinner ‘chin’ than what was suggested by previous leaked renders in lower quality.

A new Exynos chipset is one of the more exciting things about the phone

The Galaxy A21s should debut along with a new Samsung-made chipset dubbed the Exynos 850. There’s little known about this SoC, so it’s unclear whether it will have custom CPU cores or off-the-shelf ARM cores. Either way, it should have a total of eight CPU cores and achieve a maximum frequency of 2.0GHz. The silicone will be paired with 3GB of RAM, and 32GB or 64GB of storage expandable via microSD.

The Infinity-O display will be based on PLS TFT technology and have a 6.5-inch diagonal with a resolution of 1600 by 720. The selfie camera inside the display cutout is said to have a 13MP resolution, while the main camera setup should include a 48MP f/2.0 sensor, an 8MP ultra-wide angle sensor with the same aperture, and a 2MP macro camera.

Other expected specs include a 5,000mAh battery, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, and LTE connectivity. The components should be wrapped in a body measuring 8.9mm in thickness and weighing 191 grams. With all these recent leaks, the Galaxy A21s is expected to be released by the end of May for a starting price of anywhere between 199-209 euros.

Entrance exam for jobs at Samsung will be taken online for the first time

The COVID 19 pandemic has forced companies to change their ways. As social distancing becomes the norm, many formalities that were previously conducted in person have now been moved online. The same holds true for Koreans looking for jobs at Samsung.

Samsung Group, the largest conglomerate in South Korea, holds a group-wide entrance exam every year to assess thousands of college graduates and other job aspirants who want to work for the company. This will be the first time that the test is conducted online.

Samsung is taking its annual aptitude test online

The Global Samsung Aptitude Test or GSAT will be held online for the first time on May 30-31. Applicants who have cleared the documental screening will sit for the test at home under remote screening. The test will be conducted over two days in four sessions with several measures in place to prevent cheating and enhance fairness.

All of the applicants will be required to log into the monitoring system with their smartphones and record themselves and their monitors while they’re taking the test. The two-hour aptitude test will be monitored by invigilators remotely over webcams. Samsung will help applicants by providing them items like smartphone holders ahead of the test day so that they’re adequately prepared.

The GSAT is normally followed by first and second round interviews before a candidate is offered a place at one of the many companies that operate under the Samsung Group umbrella, based on the competence they displayed during the test. The interview process may also have to be changed in order to adjust to our new reality.

Samsung improves DRAM market share amid COVID-19 pandemic

According to TrendForce data cited by Yonhap News, Samsung’s DRAM revenues declined in Q1 2020 in no small part due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But despite these hurdles, Samsung managed to remain dominant in the global DRAM market throughout the January-March period and even boosted its market share.

Samsung’s global DRAM market share stood at 43.5% last quarter after a 1.6% drop from Q3 2019. But although the COVID-19 pandemic left a mark on the global economy, the Korean giant was able to improve its market share by 0.6% in Q1 2020. Its DRAM solutions covered 44.1% of the market at the end of March. The company was followed by SK hynix with a 29.3% market share, and Micro Technology with a 20.8% share.

DRAM revenues declined, but they should rebound in Q2 2020

Although Samsung’s market share increased, the recent shift in global economics did affect revenues for the company and its rivals. Shipments have declined, prices have increased, and the global DRAM industry saw a 4.6% quarter-on-quarter revenue decline in Q1 2020. Nevertheless, market researchers believe that DRAM revenues will increase more than 20% in Q2 2020 as the average selling price of DRAM chips should increase.

TrendForce estimates market shares to remain largely unchanged in the next quarter, meaning that Samsung will continue to dominate the segment. The total DRAM production capacity won’t experience significant growth throughout the year either, as none of the major DRAM manufacturers plan to change their output capacity.

Galaxy M21 budget all-rounder is launching in Spain today

The Galaxy M21 is releasing in Spain today, May 13, via Amazon, PcComponentes, and Samsung’s own website. Described by Samsung Spain as a smartphone designed especially for the younger audience, the Galaxy M21 boasts a large 6,000mAh battery and a generous 6.4-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED display.

The Galaxy M21 arrives in Spain with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. The official announcement makes no mention of the other 6GB/128GB memory configuration, but it will likely become available at a later date. For now, customers will be able to buy the 4GB/64GB Galaxy M21 in black, blue, or green for 229 euros.

A budget phone with Galaxy A51 level of performance

Samsung’s budget-oriented smartphone is well equipped for its segment and seemingly strikes a good balance between various characteristics. The large 6.4-inch Infinity-U display is backed by a generous battery with 15W fast charging, and the phone is powered by the same Exynos 9611 chipset you’d find inside the Galaxy A51. Judging by the Galaxy A51’s performance throughout our review, you may encounter the occasional lag and stutter, but the chipset is powerful enough to handle mobile gaming and titles such as PUBG without difficulties.

The phone also has a 20MP selfie shooter, a triple main camera setup with 48MP, 8MP, and 5MP sensors, and a rear-mounted fingerprint reader. The Galaxy M21 ships with Android 10 and One UI 2.0, which means it’s eligible for two major OS updates up to Android 12.

Exclusive: Galaxy Z Flip 5G will be available in a brand new color

The Galaxy Z Flip doesn’t have support for 5G but Samsung is going to launch a 5G variant of the device in the near future. We already know it’s coming and now, we’ve come to know that Samsung is going to offer a brand new color for this device as well.

Samsung has only released the LTE variant of the Galaxy Z Flip so far. However, given that 2020 is supposed to be the year of 5G for Samsung, it’s no surprise that the company following up with another variant of the device.

Samsung to launch a 5G variant of the Galaxy Z Flip

The Galaxy Z Flip 5G will more or less be the same device as the existing Galaxy Z Flip. We have already confirmed that it will feature 256GB of internal storage just like the LTE variant. There’s no 512GB or 128GB variant in development at this time.

Bearing model number SM-F707, the Galaxy Z Flip 5G will hit shelves in most markets where carriers have already flipped the switch on their next-gen networks. It’s unlikely that there would be a significant difference in price compared to the LTE variant.

The device will indeed be available in the existing black and purple color options. We also hear that there’s going to be a brand new brown color for the device, one that’s not available for the LTE Galaxy Z Flip. Samsung has created a new brown finish that it intends to use for foldable devices, because we also hear that the Galaxy Fold 2 will be available in brown as well.

Samsung hasn’t said as yet when it’s going to launch the Galaxy Z Flip 5G but it shouldn’t take more than a couple of months for the device to arrive.

May 2020 security update for Galaxy S9/S9+ rolling out worldwide

Samsung is now rolling out the May 2020 Android security update to the international variants of the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+. Identified by build number G96xFXXS9DTD7, the software package already made its way to the majority of Asia but is still largely unavailable in the West, with Germany being the first and – so far – only European country to receive it.

As is usually the case with Android updates coming straight from the Korean manufacturer, owners of unlocked Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ models can expect a notification prompting them to download the new firmware version in the coming days. Assuming they haven’t received it already, naturally.

Another minor update for Samsung’s 2018 flagships

Samsung’s 2018 flagships already entered their third year of after-sales support following their jump to Android 10 in February. In other words, the Galaxy S9 series almost certainly won’t be upgraded to Android 11. Be that as it may, Samsung continues to work on optimizing its latest security releases for the said smartphone range and should keep that up until at least next year. The Galaxy S9 and S9+ will also be getting the One UI 2.1 update in the near future.

Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ users who aren’t keen on waiting for the May 2020 security patch to hit their devices can also flash the new firmware manually using a Windows computer. If you happen to be part of that crowd, you can find the latest compatible build in SamMobile’s firmware archive. If you own a carrier-locked version of the Galaxy S9, you’ll have to wait a little while longer before the newest Android security patch becomes available for download on your device.

Samsung may soon sell you a $1,100 Galaxy Fold Special Edition

Thought the $1,980 price tag for the original Galaxy Fold was a bit too much? While the world waits for Samsung to launch the device’s successor, it seems that the company has come up with a plan to clear the existing inventory of its first foldable smartphone.

Word on the street is that Samsung is planning to launch a cheaper Galaxy Fold Special Edition. With an expected price tag of $1,100, it would make foldable smartphones attainable for a lot more people, even more so than the $1,400 Galaxy Z Flip.

A more affordable Galaxy Fold is coming

According to Display Supply Chain Consultants CEO Ross Young, Samsung is going to launch a Galaxy Fold Special Edition in July and it will be priced around $1,099. This handset will be made available in limited quantities worldwide, there may only be around 55,000 units to go around. He also mentions that it will look like the original Galaxy Fold.

This follows recent rumors about a Galaxy Fold Lite which was also expected to arrive with a $1,100 price tag. Whatever this device ends up being called, it won’t just be the Galaxy Fold with a new price tag. Samsung is likely going to use a mix of components from the last couple of years to put together a device that it can sell at that price.

It could opt for a smaller cover display and might not utilize ultra-thin glass for the foldable panel. Base storage may also be 256GB with only a 4G variant being offered. However, rumor has it that it would feature the Snapdragon 865 processor, which would be a step up considering the fact that the original Galaxy Fold came with the Snapdragon 855.

A $1,100 Galaxy Fold Special Edition will definitely make foldable smartphones attainable for a lot more people, even though it will only be available in limited quantities. It’s also expected to price the price down somewhat for the Galaxy Fold 2 which is likely to be unveiled in August this year alongside the Galaxy Note 20.

Samsung plans to collaborate with Hyundai for electric cars

Samsung is planning to collaborate with South Korean carmaker Hyundai for electric cars. It is being reported that top bosses of the two firms met to discuss a potential collaboration. Samsung may want to supply EV batteries and other connected car components for Hyundai’s electric vehicles.

Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong met Chung Eui-sun, Executive Vice Chairman of Hyundai Motor Group, at Samsung SDI’s battery plant in Cheonan, Seoul. Senior executives of the two companies were also present during the meeting. The two firms are said to have discussed next-gen battery technologies and also shared their research and development statuses in the field with each other.

A Samsung spokesperson said that the company’s all-solid-state batteries are stable and sturdy, and the South Korean electronics firm is hoping for expanded collaboration with Hyundai in the electric mobility segment. Hyundai currently uses batteries from LG Chem and SK Innovation in its electric cars, but Samsung could soon be added to its list of battery suppliers.

Currently, electric vehicles use batteries with liquid electrolytes. However, all-solid-state batteries offer improved performance and higher energy density. Samsung had announced back in March that its solid-state batteries could allow electric cars to travel as long as 800km in a single charge and can handle over 1,000 charge cycles.

Samsung acquired HARMAN International for $8 billion three years ago. The company now makes connected car components, digital cockpits, displays, infotainment systems, memory, and sensors for cars. If Samsung’s collaboration with Hyundai succeeds, it could mean more business for the South Korean firm.

Hyundai has plans to launch 44 eco-friendly car models by 2025, and 23 of them would be purely electric. Samsung SDI already supplies EV batteries to Lucid Motors and is trying to be more self-reliant by manufacturing cathodes internally.
