Samsung’s working on a wireless TV — and we can’t wait for it to arrive

Samsung is working on a TV that requires no cables whatsoever to function, according to a new patent. The supporting documentation explains how such a device works: an electromagnetic bar is mounted between the TV and the wall, drawing current from a base station, which also doubles as a soundbar, that generates an electromagnetic field in the room the TV is located.

The concept should sound familiar. Wireless chargers take advantage of the electromagnetic field to pass current between a charging pad and a supported device — with the main difference here being that Samsung’s solution enables there to be a gap between the two. To start, though, the gap will have to be fairly small, as indicated in the illustration (below) included in the patent filing.

The wireless revolution won’t stop at TVs

That said, in the future we should be able to have one central base station in a room that’s capable of feeding power to all the devices in it, including TVs and set-top boxes. Disney Research even goes as far as to suggest that the magnetic field in some rooms will be so strong that you’ll be able to walk in and the base station will instantly start charging your smartphone — but that’s a long way off.

Good Lock with Android Pie and One UI support coming March 8

Samsung will soon push out an update to Good Lock that will make it fully compatible with Android Pie and One UI. When the One UI beta was released for the Galaxy S9 last year, many were disappointed to see that most of Good Lock’s plugins and apps failed to run properly. The development team had already said they’d be working on making Good Lock compatible with Pie, and it looks like the new version will be released on March 8 (this Friday).

The team behind Good Lock has also listed a number of new features and improvements that will make their way to users this month. For example, Task Changer will get new styles for the recent apps screen while the MultiStar plugin will bring back some of the Multi Window functionality that was removed with Android Pie (the Good Lock team has confirmed that the reduced Multi Window functionality on Pie is in accordance with some Google policy). Good Lock may even bring the Galaxy S10’s Best Shot camera feature as a plugin called NiceShot, which will help users frame a scene properly before they take a photo.

This Samsung Members post details more of the changes and features that Good Lock will get (such as a One UI look and feel), although the translation from Korean makes it hard to understand some of it. We’ll be sure to dig into the newer version of Good Lock once it goes live on March 8.

Galaxy S10 gets 1.2Gbps LTE with SK Telecom in South Korea

Leading South Korean wireless carrier SK Telecom Co. has rolled out 1.2Gbps LTE with the launch of the Galaxy S10 in the country. The new speed will be faster than ITU’s max LTE speed of 1Gbps, and is 16 times faster than LTE speeds back in 2011, when it was first rolled out.

The Galaxy S10 goes on sale on March 8 globally. SK Telecom, however, has already began shipping the pre-ordered units of the new Samsung flagships.

South Korea may get commercial 5G by April

Samsung also has a 5G variant of the Galaxy S10, which will be launched in the United States and South Korea in the coming months. Carriers in these two countries have already deployed their 5G networks, and will soon be launching commercial 5G services.

In South Korea, telcos are reportedly planning to launch 5G services by April 2019. However, 5G networks will be non-standalone in the country this year. Rather, it will be based on LTE networks. This essentially means that LTE networks will play an important role in 5G rollout in the country. And ahead of that impending rollout, SK Telecom is vowing to offer faster LTE connectivity.

SK Telecom has achieved the 1.2Gbps speed through the application of 4×4 multi-antenna technology into three bands. With the new speed, users can download a HD 2GB movie in just 13 seconds, the telco said. However, the full speed will not be available initially. Galaxy S10 users in the cities of Seoul, Busan, Ulsan, Gwangju, and Daejun will get speeds of up to 1.15Gbps. The full 1.2Gbps capability will be rolled out with a software update in the first half of 2019. Galaxy S10 users, however, can enjoy speeds of up to 1.2Gbps when using the telco’s 4.8Gbps Wi-Fi services.

India may offer duty relief to Samsung for restarting local TV production

The Indian government hiked import duty on “open cells,” a key component used in making TVs, in last year’s budget. This prompted Samsung to move its TV production from India to Vietnam, where the company already has a huge manufacturing base. The company decided to import TVs from Vietnam to cater to the Indian market.

The government was apparently upset that it came to know about Samsung’s decision only after it stopped making TVs in India. It appears the setback is forcing the government to do a course correction on its poorly thought out plan to boost TV manufacturing in the county. A report in The Economic Times says the government is now negotiating with Samsung to start making TVs locally again.

Samsung is noncommittal so far

The government has reportedly sought a commitment from Samsung to bring back TV manufacturing to India if the import duty on “open cells” is to be removed. The Korean company has been “noncommittal so far,” even as the parties are still discussing the issue, says the report. It is doubtful the company will reconsider its decision as it stands to gain more financially by manufacturing in Vietnam, due to various factors such as tax incentives, favorable trade agreements, etc.

“We feel Samsung was already planning to shift its production of TV panels to Vietnam and this imposition of duty on open cells was one opportunity they got. They got an opportunity to shift out to Vietnam from where they can use the free trade agreement route to avoid the duty,” a government official told the publication.

March 2019 security patch details confirmed by Samsung

Samsung has now confirmed the details of the March 2019 security patch. The latest security maintenance release should start making its way to compatible devices in the coming days. As expected, it brings bug fixes from both Google and Samsung.

We have seen in recent months that one or two devices actually get the new patch even before it’s detailed by Samsung. That happened last week when we reported on firmware being available for the Galaxy M20 with the March 2019 patch.

March 2019 security patch brings bug fixes

The security maintenance release for March 2019 includes patches for eight critical vulnerabilities found in the Android OS. That’s in addition to the dozens of high-risk and a single moderate-risk vulnerability patched with this release. The most severe Android OS vulnerability fixed could enable a remote attacker to use a special file to run arbitrary code in the context of a privileged process.

However, Google received no reports of active customer exploitation or abuse of the reported issues which have now been patched. Also included in this release are patches for 11 Samsung Vulnerabilities and Exposures (SVE) items. Samsung’s vulnerabilities include one which leaked Private Mode thumbnail contents in Gallery and allowed exposure of Secure Folder preview in recent apps.

Samsung will now get down to the business of rolling out this security patch to compatible devices. We should expect that to happen over the next couple of weeks. Its flagship handsets will most likely be the first to receive the March 2019 security patch.

Samsung to hold an exclusive Fortnite event on March 16

Samsung will be holding an exclusive Fortnite event for the Galaxy S10 owners at Samsung 837 in New York City on March 16, 2019. The event will celebrate the arrival of the new iKONIC skin and the Scenario emote. The new items, exclusive for the Galaxy S10, S10e, and S10+ owners, will become available on March 8, 2019. Popular Fortnite streamer Ninja will join K-Pop sensations iKON “for a one-of-a-kind Fortnite x Galaxy gaming experience.”

Bludrive is designing a Fortnite Creative Island for the event

Ninja recently announced on his stream that he’d be playing on “a brand new map, literally built for this event.” However, it turns out the “new map” is actually not a map at all. In the wake of Ninja’s comments, Samsung US tweeted to clarify that the event will feature a new Fortnite Creative Island, rather than a whole new location. Bludrive is designing the new Creative Island for the event.

As for the new iKONIK skin, it will be exclusive to the customers who pre-order the Galaxy S10. The emote, meanwhile, doesn’t require a pre-order. It will be available to everyone who purchase the new Samsung flagships. If you’re interested, then you can register here for a chance to attend the event. For those who can’t make it to the event, you can watch it on Twitch.

Galaxy A90 may launch in Europe as well

Samsung has been revamping its Galaxy A series lineup for 2019 with more models, features, and aggressive pricing. The company has already released the Galaxy A10, A30, and A50 under the new strategy. There is evidence to show it is planning to release more A series devices, including a Galaxy A90, in the coming months.

The Galaxy A90 is supposed to be the most premium of these new devices, as indicated by its model number. A previous report said that it might be exclusive for China, but that doesn’t seem to the case going by the new information available today. Galaxy Club has found that Samsung is also developing a European variant of the A90 under the model number SM-A905F. While this is not enough to guess the exact markets where it will launch, at least it confirms some European markets are on A90’s radar.

A brand-new camera system?

Not much has been leaked about the Galaxy A90 so far, other than some vague but exciting gossip about the camera system onboard. It is rumored to come with a 48-megapixel “lifting rotary camera solution” which supposedly allows a single camera system to be used both as a selfie and rear camera through some form of sliding and rotating mechanism.

A brand-new camera system on a midranger doesn’t sound outlandish since Samsung announced a change in strategy for midrange smartphones last year. The company decided to pack its midrange smartphones with innovative features even before they make their debut on its flagships. The triple-camera system on the A7 (2018) and the quad-camera setup on the A9 (2018) were a result of this new strategy.

First-day Galaxy S10 registrations reportedly below the Galaxy S9

The Galaxy S10 series has received a lot of praise ever since Samsung unveiled it on February 20. The three variants offer something for everyone while there’s going to be a fourth in some markets which will have support for 5G. However, it appears that the reception in Samsung’s home country of South Korea hasn’t been as grand as the company would have hoped.

Local media reports suggest that first-day registrations for the Galaxy S10 are below that of the Galaxy S9 in South Korea. The number of Galaxy S10 units that customers signed up for at local mobile carriers is 140,000 units on the first day of registration. The reports don’t mention which of the three Galaxy S10 models has been picked up the most by customers.

Galaxy S10 registrations lag behind the Galaxy S9 in South Korea

The figure is below the 180,000 units that customers signed up for on the first day of registration for the Galaxy S9 and 200,000 units for the Galaxy Note 9. Samsung has opened up registrations for the Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+ in South Korea four days before the official launch.

SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus took pre-orders from February 25 and started shipping out units on March 4. This figure represents people who showed up at a carrier’s store on March 4 to purchase the Galaxy S10 there.

What could be the reason behind the dip in first-day registrations for the Galaxy S10? Premium smartphone customers are holding on to their devices for longer as high-end smartphones become more expensive. So it could just be that there are fewer people looking to upgrade at this point in time.

Moreover, South Korea is one of the few markets where the Galaxy S10 5G will be released. There’s also the possibility that some customers are simply waiting for that variant to go on sale. In order to entice those customers to make the switch today, some carriers in South Korea are actually running a promotion which will let them exchange the 4G Galaxy S10 for a Galaxy S10 5G when it’s released.

Samsung hasn’t shared any official pre-order figures for the Galaxy S10 at this point in time. It will obviously have sold a lot more units across the globe but a precise figure is not yet available.

Galaxy S10 experience app lets you take the new flagship for a spin

Samsung has released the Galaxy S10 experience app on the Play Store which allows you to take the new flagship for a spin, albeit virtually. The company has been doing this for a couple of years now actually. What these apps do is basically walk you through the core features of the new device.

The company made a similar app for the Galaxy Note 8 as well as the Galaxy S9/S9+. The idea behind the app is obviously to entice Android users to switch to Galaxy. As such, it’s being distributed through the Play Store.

Galaxy S10 experience app highlights core features

There are four core sections of the app which highlight features such as the camera systems, in-display fingerprint sensor, Wireless PowerShare and more. It will also allow you to compare the Galaxy S10’s specs with older Samsung flagships.

The Galaxy S10 experience app features demos that provide a detailed look at some of the top features of the new flagship. They’re definitely more geared towards those who are new to Samsung devices. This app is optimized for the Galaxy Note 9 and the Galaxy S9/S9+. It can obviously run on the Galaxy S10 series as well. You’ll find it running on demo units inside retail and carrier stores.

Head over to the Google Play Store to download the Galaxy S10 experience app if you’re interested in trying it out. If you like what you see, head over to our Galaxy S10 pre-order deals page to find the best deal for the new flagship.
