Galaxy Note 9 vs Galaxy S9+: One big reason to go for the Note

To some of you, I may sound like a broken record when I say this, but if you’re someone who cares about their smartphone’s performance, you should be picking up Galaxy Note flagships in general over the Galaxy S models. And that makes the choice easy when it comes to deciding whether you should wait for the Galaxy Note 9 or just pick up a Galaxy S9+.

Of course, this advice is not for those who buy the Note flagships for the S Pen. But there are many out there who don’t care about the S Pen and will be wondering if there is another reason to go for a Galaxy Note, which is always costlier than the Plus-sized Galaxy S flagship launched in the same year. This time around, the expected 4,000 mAh battery is already a big reason to wait for the Galaxy Note 9, but what if that doesn’t pan out? What makes it worth waiting for the Galaxy Note 9 if you don’t care about the S Pen and Samsung pops in a smaller battery in it?

Galaxy Note 9 vs Galaxy S9+: Performance is key

As I said in the first sentence of this post, it’s performance. Or, to be more precise, consistent performance. Galaxy S flagships are pretty much as quick as Galaxy Note flagships when they’re new, but even in 2018, the Galaxy S phones tend to develop noticeable stutter and lag a few months down the line. In fact, that’s true for all Samsung devices, only mid-range and budget phones slow down considerably more than the flagships.

But, for some reason, it’s not the same for Note flagships. The Galaxy Note 4 may have been a disaster on the performance front, but things have changed. Galaxy Note 8 owners will know how that phone continues to perform well, and I’m sure Galaxy S9+ owners will have a few complaints. I’m not saying the Galaxy S9+ is slow. But it sure isn’t as consistently smooth and quick as it was when it was new. The Note 8 is, and even the Galaxy Note 5 fared better than the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge with long-term usage.

The Galaxy Note 9 will most likely be similarly consistent with its software performance even months after use, and it’s one of the major reasons I think it’s worth waiting for the Note 9, even if it might be costlier than the Galaxy S9+. Again, the Galaxy S9+ is a solid device and a good choice for those uninterested in what the S Pen brings to the table, especially if they are looking to save some money. But if you demand excellent performance from your phones, the Galaxy Note 9 would hands down be the better choice.

Rumor: Galaxy Note 9 price may be same as the Galaxy Note 8’s

Samsung is all set to unveil the Galaxy Note 9 on August 9 (see how that rhymes?), and the official pricing and release dates for various markets will be two key pieces of information that we will get at the Unpacked event. The latest rumor tells us the release date may be set for August 24, and we are now hearing about what may be the possible price of the Galaxy Note 9 in Europe, at least in Poland.

Same price, better hardware

Polish site Spider’s Web claims to have received information from one of Samsung’s employees who was present at a meeting at the company’s headquarters, where folks are already being trained so they can market the Galaxy Note 9 to consumers. The Galaxy Note 9 will reportedly be priced at PLN 4299, which equates to around €995, in Poland. This is for the base variant with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The site says it was able to confirm the price by talking to a retailer and that the Note 9 color options in the country will be black, blue, and purple.

The Galaxy Note 8 was launched at the same price in Europe last year, which makes this quite interesting. What would truly be impressive is if Samsung is able to actually offer rumored features like a Bluetooth-enabled S Pen and a 4,000 mAh battery at the same price as the Note 8. Or, well, maybe it won’t be that impressive, as the company would still be charging more than it does for the Galaxy S9+. But it will tell us that Samsung isn’t ready to breach the €1,000 mark for its flagships just yet, though the Galaxy S10 or least the Galaxy X might change that next year.

And, of course, nothing is official until Samsung confirms it. Maybe the price of the Galaxy Note 9 will end up going over the €1000 mark, and there’s naught we can do but wait and see whether that will turn out to be the case.

Use Emergency mode on Samsung smartphones for help in difficult situations

Samsung smartphones come with a very useful feature that you rely on in difficult situations for help. It’s aptly called Emergency mode and lets you access important emergency features and helps conserve the handset’s battery power to extend its standby time for as long as possible. It also limits the device’s functionality in order to conserve battery life.

The home screen is changed to a simple black theme and simplified when the Emergency mode is enabled. The brightness and frame rate are lowered while the CPU speed is limited. It restricts app usage to the essential apps that you select and turns off mobile data when the screen is off. Other connectivity features such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are disabled as well. The location settings remain as they were in the Emergency mode once it’s turned off.

It’s basically the ultra power saving mode with the ability to send a distress signal from your phone. Once the Emergency mode is enabled, you can turn on the flash to use it as a torch, send your location to a contact through text message, sound an emergency alarm on your phone, browse the internet and make/receive phone calls.

How to use Emergency mode on Samsung smartphones

Step 1: Press and hold the power button for a few seconds and then tap on Emergency mode.

Step 3: Use the “+” button to add one additional app to the simplified home screen if you need. Only select apps work in this mode.

That’s it. Emergency mode is very easy to enable and use and will certainly come in handy if you ever find yourself in a difficult situation. Tap on the relevant options to activate the emergency alarm and torch or to share your location and make a phone call.

Samsung has made it very simple to understand and use. The emergency alarm is a particularly good option as it loudly beeps when enabled. To turn off the Emergency mode, just tap on the hamburger menu (the three-dot icon) in the top right corner and tap on the relevant option. You can also manage your emergency contacts by tapping the Manage emergency contacts option in the hamburger menu.

Samsung heir is paying special attention to the company’s IM division

Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman and the conglomerate’s heir apparent Lee Jae-yong had an eventful 2017. He landed in jail on charges of bribery and corruption. A Seoul court sentenced him to five years in prison after he was found guilty. He walked free earlier this year when his appeal was allowed by the Seoul High Court and his jail term suspended. Lee Jae-yong has since returned to his duties at Samsung.

A new report out of South Korea claims that Samsung’s heir apparent is paying special attention to the company’s IT & Mobile Communications division. The smartphone business comes under this division. He’s reportedly taking a special interest in any and all matters.

Smartphone division gets special attention

He traveled to China a couple of months ago where he met CEOs of some of Samsung’s biggest Chinese rivals such as Huawei and Xiaomi. Lee Jae-yong also visited local smartphone stores in Shenzhen to examine competitors’ products.

It was then reported that a change was made in the Galaxy Note 9’s design based on the heir’s direction. The thickness of the glass display was reportedly reduced by 0.5mm to improve how the Galaxy Note 9 feels in the hand. Lee Jae-yong reportedly ordered the change after evaluating the look and feel of competitors’ products. Local media reports suggested that this was the first time that Samsung’s IM division had made a change in the design this close to launch. The order to do this could certainly come from the very top.

The Samsung heir was also present when the company announced the completion of its new smartphone factory in Noida, India earlier this week. It’s the world’s largest smartphone factory based on production capacity. He reportedly sees a possibility of making bigger changes in the IM division to improve the prospects of this business.

Samsung may be widely known for its smartphones but the fact remains that they haven’t been driving the company’s revenues. The semiconductor division remains the company’s cash cow while the IM division’s profits have reportedly dropped by 43 percent this quarter compared to the same period last year.

Lee Jae-yong is now expected to make bold decisions to achieve mid- to long-term success for the smartphone division compared to short-term results. This may result in the launch of Samsung’s long-rumored foldable smartphone next year.
