Galaxy J4 official renders show a typical budget Samsung smartphone

The launch of the Galaxy J4 is going to happen sooner rather than later, possibly at Samsung’s May 21st event in India where the company will also be unveiling the Galaxy J6. We’ve already seen the Galaxy J4 in live images from a Taiwanese certification authority, and official renders have now leaked to give us a proper look at the gold and black variants of Samsung’s upcoming budget smartphone.

Galaxy J4 official renders

The Galaxy J4, unlike the Galaxy J6, is going to feature a standard 16:9 display, and WinFuture.de says it’s a Super AMOLED panel. Its spec sheet reads like a typical entry-level smartphone from the Korean giant, as we had exclusively revealed last week. It has an octa-core Exynos 7570 chipset clocked at 1.4GHz, 2GB/3GB RAM, 13-megapixel and 5-megapixel rear and front cameras with an LED flash for both, 16GB/32GB storage (expandable), dual SIM slots, LTE connectivity, and a removable 3,000 mAh battery. It will run Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box, with Samsung’s Experience UX 9.0.

The Galaxy J4’s design is as typical of an entry-level Samsung smartphone as the specs, as you can see in the images. No Infinity Display, no fingerprint sensor, and not even a USB Type-C port, making it far less impressive than the Galaxy J6. Pricing should accordingly be lower than the J6′, though there’s no word on that front just yet.

Take a look at the official renders below.

Galaxy J6 and Galaxy A6+ pricing, retail boxes leak ahead of Indian launch

It’s not often that Samsung launches new smartphones from two different lineups at the same event, but the company looks set to break tradition this time around, at least in India. Samsung had earlier sent out invites for a May 21st event in the country for a new device with an Infinity Display, and it looks like it will be unveiling both the Galaxy J6 and the Galaxy A6+, retail boxes and pricing for which have been leaked today. The Galaxy A6 may also be part of the launch, as it received the May security update yesterday despite not being official in India yet, though there’s no word on pricing for that particular device.

Galaxy J6 and Galaxy A6+ launch in India on May 21st

The Galaxy J6 price in India will start at Rs. 12,990 ($190) for the 3GB RAM variant; the 4GB variant will reportedly cost Rs. 15,990 ($235). The Galaxy J6 retail box shows a slightly higher maximum retail price (MRP) of Rs. 14,990, and if the box is for the base variant, then the market price of Rs. 12,990 would make sense. Meanwhile, the Galaxy A6+’ MRP is Rs. 28,000, so it can be expected to go on sale for around Rs. 2,000 less. It would still be high considering the competition in the segment Samsung is targeting, although features like the 24-megapixel front camera, Dolby Atmos, Samsung Pay, and, of course, the Infinity Display should entice plenty of customers.

Thanks to Samsung’s website, we also know the Galaxy J6 will go on sale the day after it is announced. The Galaxy A6+ release date shouldn’t be too far, and it could go on sale the very next day like the Galaxy J6. Nothing is confirmed, though, so we will have to wait until Monday to get the official nitty gritties on availability and pricing.

Galaxy J6 user manual appears ahead of May 22 release

There’s really not much left that Samsung can surprise us with when it launches the Galaxy J6 and the Galaxy J4 in India next week. Almost all of the details have already been leaked online and even exclusively leaked live images of the Galaxy J6 thus confirming that it does indeed have a flat Infinity Display.

We also reported last week that the Galaxy J4 user manual was available online. Those who are interested can now also sift through the Galaxy J6 user manual which reiterates that the device has a couple of interesting features such as facial recognition and Dolby Atmos audio. The release date for the handset has also been revealed.

Galaxy J6 user manual

Both the Galaxy J6 and the Galaxy J4 feature a plastic back and while it’s removable on the latter which will let users pop in a spare battery, the same has not been extended to the Galaxy J6. It has a fixed plastic back to go with its flat 5.6-inch Infinity Display and 3,000mAh battery.

Go through the Galaxy J6 user manual and you’ll find that facial recognition is one of the new features on this device. Samsung has brought this feature to its lower mid-range smartphone now after adding it to the Galaxy A6 as well earlier this year. Face recognition will let users unlock their device by using the front camera to scan their face.

Samsung may have introduced the Dolby Atmos surround sound mode with its flagship devices but the feature has since trickled down to many of its non-premium handsets so it’s not surprising to see that Samsung has added Dolby Atmos support to the Galaxy J6 as well. The feature can be controlled from the Sounds and vibration menu in the Settings app.

Galaxy J6 release date

Samsung has already sent out invites in India for an event which will take place on May 21. It appears that the Galaxy J6 release will take place the very next day in the country as there’s a page up on Samsung India’s website right now which says that “sale starts 22nd May 2018.”

It’s unclear as yet when Samsung will bring the handset to other markets across the globe and how much it will be charging for it.

Samsung’s cheaper 10-inch tablet may be called the Galaxy Tab Advanced2

There hasn’t been much activity from Samsung on the tablet front but recent reports have suggested that the company might be working on two new tablets. What this means is that the upcoming Galaxy Tab S4 might not be the only addition to Samsung’s tablet lineup this year.

A support page for an unannounced Samsung tablet bearing model number SM-T583 has been spotted on the company’s South Korean website. The same model number has also appeared in a Bluetooth listing which suggests that it might be called the Galaxy Tab Advanced 2.

Galaxy Tab Advanced2

Not much is known about this unannounced tablet at this point in time but a quick comparison with the model number of an existing Samsung tablet suggests that it might be a new iteration of the Galaxy Tab A 10.1. Samsung launched the Galaxy Tab A 10.1 back in 2016 with SM-T580 as the model number.

Other than the suggestion that Samsung is testing this tablet, there isn’t a lot of information available about the Galaxy Tab Advanced2 right now. It’s pertinent to mention here that Samsung didn’t release a 2017 iteration of the Galaxy Tab A 10.1 even though the company did launch an 8-inch version of the tablet.

It’s possible that the company will launch the latest iteration of this tablet in the market with a new moniker which makes sense now that the SM-T583 has popped up in a Bluetooth listing as the Galaxy Tab Advanced 2. The listing itself doesn’t reveal much about this device other than its model number and the fact that it’s a “Samsung Mobile Device.”

It might serve Samsung’s interests to launch a cheaper 10.1-inch tablet with S Pen support as it will appeal to customers who may not be able to afford the company’s flagship Galaxy Tab S4. What’s unclear at this point in time, though, is when Samsung is planning to launch these two tablets. If they are indeed due in the coming months then we can expect to see a lot of leaks and rumors related to these tablets in the near future.

Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge Oreo update rollout resumed

The Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge finally received their Oreo update a few weeks ago. Samsung initially started rolling out the update in the United Kingdom and while the company was yet to start a wider rollout, it had to temporarily pull the update.

We reported yesterday that Samsung had temporarily halted the rollout of the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge Oreo update due to some issues. Fortunately, it hasn’t been a big delay, because we’re now seeing that the rollout has been resumed by Samsung.

Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge Oreo update

The confirmation of the rollout being halted came from a moderator on Samsung’s official help forum for Europe. The moderator posted that following a small number of cases where Galaxy S7 units rebooted unexpectedly with Oreo, the company has decided to stop the release as it investigates the issue to ensure that the impact on affected devices is minimized and that it can resume the rollout as soon as possible.

A similar notice was also posted on Samsung’s official help forum for Canada where a moderator wrote that the Android 8.0 Oreo update for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge is pending in need of a fix for a technical issue that was discovered after the update was released.

Samsung has now resumed the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge Oreo update release which is good for those who have been waiting for a taste of Oreo. It’s now rolling out firmware version G930FXXU2ERE8 and G935FXXU2ERE8 for the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge respectively.

While initially, it may have appeared that they would have to wait for some time after the rollout was halted because users had to wait for a couple of weeks after the Galaxy S8/S8+ Oreo update was halted earlier this year due to similar issues, but Samsung appears to have worked through the problem swiftly enough to start sending out the update once again.
