Optus Australia adds Galaxy J1 as off-contract option for $169

Samsung’s Galaxy J1 has been making its rounds worldwide (since Russia, The Netherlands, India, Malaysia, and the Philippines), and it appears as though the device has made its landing in “the land down under” – but now comes with a special offer for those who love prepaid agreements and want to be as free to buy and sell new devices as possible.

The Galaxy J1 features a 4-inch, thin-film transistor (TFT) liquid crystal display (LCD) with less than quarter HD resolution (800 x 480), along with a low-clocked quad-core processor (1.2Ghz), 4GB of memory, a small battery (1,850mAh), along with small-megapixel cameras (2MP front, 5MP back) and small RAM (768MB). The battery may not prove much trouble for those who’ll take advantage of Samsung’s Ultra Power Saving Mode (along for the software experience). The microSD card slot that provides 128GB of expandable storage is another “win” for the Galaxy J1 along with 4G data compatibility, so budget-friendly shoppers have a stellar buy here without a contract.

Optus is selling the Galaxy J1 for A$169, and promises a 1-2 business-day delivery time. To sweeten the deal, Optus is throwing in a 3-month free Netflix subscription.

So, how about it, Optus customers? Does the three-month Netflix deal make this more palatable to you? Do you know a friend or relative that would love to have a Samsung smartphone at an affordable price?

Tizen Z1 update for India brings new WhatsApp shortcut, language support

Samsung Z1 users can’t seem to get enough updates, with Samsung working overtime to roll out new updates to its Tizen devices. Tizen has been in the works for a long time and required a few delays before arriving on the market, but Samsung wants Tizen to make a good impression. While it could be said that Samsung Galaxy updates are slow due to the Korean manufacturer’s lack of control over Android, Tizen is completely under Samsung’s control and provides the company a chance to show how well it performs when controlling the entire user experience.

Today’s update brings the Tizen Z1 to build number Z130HDDU0BOD7, although the size is small indeed (17.3MB in size). While Samsung provides a small number of bug fixes here (as to be expected), the company’s Z1 update also provides an official WhatsApp application shortcut and now supports 14 languages. In order to receive the official WhatsApp shortcut, however, you’ll be prompted to download the new WhatsApp application – after which, the old WhatsApp application “will be deactivated,” Samsung’s update says.

As of now, the update is only available for India customers, so Bangladesh customers will have to wait. With Samsung preparing to bring Tizen worldwide to countries outside of India and Bangladesh, the Z1’s quick update schedule is a very good sign indeed.

Galaxy S6 is the ‘smartphone of your dreams’ according to Samsung’s latest ad

Over the last couple of weeks Samsung has released multiple video ads for the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge, the company is certainly sparing no expense in advertising its new flagship smartphones. Samsung’s latest ad lists the Galaxy S6′s fast charging capability and the fact that it also supports wireless charging straight out of the box, and proclaims it the “smartphone of your dreams.”

Fast charging certainly comes in handy if you have very little time to charge your device but want it to last at least a couple of hours until you can find time to plug it in again. Samsung wants you to know that this is one of the features that sets the Galaxy S6 apart from the competition. Since wireless charging is actually built into the device there’s no need to snap on an external case or any other accessory, just place the device on a wireless charging pad and you’re good to go. Last but not the least the ad highlights the Ultra Power Saving Mode which turns off the color display, unnecessary apps and other connectivity options to ensure that the device doesn’t die on you and that you still have cellular connectivity for some time even when the battery is running on fumes.

If this doesn’t coax you into believing that the Galaxy S6 is the smartphone of your dreams perhaps its stellar performance and beautiful design will. Samsung’s latest ad for the Galaxy S6 is quirky, witty and fun to watch. Do check it out.

Unlocked Galaxy S5 going for $299 on eBay

eBay has a great deal on the Galaxy S5 today, emphasis on the word today because you won’t be able to take advantage of this deal tomorrow. It’s selling a refurbished unlocked Galaxy S5 for just $299 which is a 50 percent discount on the usual retail price of last year’s flagship smartphone. The device is available in white, black or gold colors.

Just in case you forgot the Galaxy S5 has a 5.1-inch 1080p display, a 2.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor with 2GB RAM, 16-megapixel rear camera, fingerprint sensor and a microSD card slot, which many Samsung fans are missing on the Galaxy S6. It has a removable battery which you won’t find on the Galaxy S6, so if that’s what you’re looking for and don’t mind last year’s specifications, this is a pretty good deal. eBay cautions interested buyers that this deal ends tonight and stock is limited so if you’re interested better not waste any time.

Qualcomm may opt for Samsung’s foundries to produce the Snapdragon 820

Samsung’s chip-making arm may be about to score a big client if a report published today turns out to be true. Citing sources familiar with Qualcomm’s roadmap and Samsung’s foundry operations Re/code reports that Qualcomm is going to go with Samsung’s foundries for the mass production of its next high-end chip, the Snapdragon 820. Apparently Qualcomm has made this decision due to the fact that Samsung is already making chips using the 14-nm process, the chip inside the Galaxy S6 is built on this very process.

On the other hand Qualcomm’s traditional contract chip maker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. and other foundry partners are still on the 20-nm process. From purely a business standpoint it makes sense for Qualcomm to go with Samsung since 14-nm chips are relatively cheaper to produce and offer more power efficiency as opposed to 20-nm chips. This was one of the reasons why Samsung decided to go with its own 14-nm Exynos 7420 processor for the Galaxy S6 instead of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 which companies like HTC and LG have used in their 2015 flagships. The report also claims that Qualcomm hopes this switch will win back business for Samsung’s next Galaxy S flagship smartphone.

Perhaps Samsung might go with the Snapdragon 820 for its next Galaxy S flagship given that the chip will have a custom-designed Qualcomm processor, graphics core and a built-in LTE modem. It will cost Samsung less than it did when the company decided to go with a separate modem chip to use with its own processor for the Galaxy S6. Nothing can be said for sure at this stage though as it’s pure speculation. Qualcomm will provide the Snapdragon 820 to OEMs for sampling later this year, the first devices running on this chip aren’t expected before 2016.

Samsung’s DOWELL app makes it easier for people with upper limb disabilities to use smartphones

Smartphones are very intuitive devices that simply requires taps and swipes to function but this can be hard for people with upper limb disabilities who face difficulty when using their fingers and hands. Samsung Electronics has come up with a new application called DOWELL which allows those users to control their smartphones with existing assistive computer devices. The company plans on launching this service in 2016.

Existing assistive computer devices include trackballs, head mouse devices and other technologies which can be used by people with upper limb disabilities to control devices through software that eliminates the need for button click control. Smartphones on other hand require taps, swipes, pinches and other actions which can be hard for people with this disability but Samsung aims to make it easier with DOWELL. Once the app is installed the user needs to connect their smartphone to a USB-type computer assistive device. The upper and lower sections of the smartphone’s screen can then be accessed as DOWELL’s user interface. Within the upper screen the user can tap or drag and use other touch commands and from the lower screen they can bring up the menu, home screen and even use the basic hardware keys of the Galaxy smartphone.

Thus the app lets people with upper limb disabilities to easily and efficiently use smartphones by connecting assistance devices they already own without having to purchase additional equipment. DOWELL will work with most Samsung smartphones, from the Galaxy S3 to the most recent models, and will be commercially launched later this year.

Samsung’s S Health app is now available on the Play Store

In the last year or so, Android manufacturers have taken to putting their proprietary apps on the Google Play Store, as a means of offering quicker updates to these apps instead of making users wait for newer versions through software updates. Samsung hasn’t been to active at doing so, but it seems to be rectifying that with the launch of its S Health app on the Play Store.

The version on the Play Store is the same as the one found on the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge, and it should be compatible with most of Samsung’s smartphones. At this point there doesn’t seem to be anything noticeable newer or different about the app on the Play Store, but it should bring users of non-Galaxy S6 devices the newer UI tha debuted on Samsung’s latest flagships.
