Samsung Galaxy Note 6 will reportedly feature Snapdragon 823 SoC

Samsung isn’t due to unveil the Galaxy Note 6 until the fall but rumors and reports are already coming in about the company’s next-generation phablet. The latest, originating from China, suggests that the Galaxy Note 6 will be powered by a 64-bit Kryo 2.6GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 823 processor with Adreno 530 GPU and up to 8GB of RAM. A 25-megapixel rear camera is also rumored though this is likely for the Xperia handset that is mentioned with the Note 6.

These specifications appear to be a bit implausible because Samsung won’t really be competing against the Snapdragon 823 with the Exynos 8890, which is its flagship high-end processor. Because no new Exynos processor has arrived after this one it’s likely that Samsung might not opt for the Snapdragon 823 for the Galaxy Note 6. There’s not a lot of information available on the SD823 right now but it’s believed to be the same as the Snapdragon 820 model running on a higher clock.

Samsung could come out with a similar version of the Exynos 8890 but it can’t be said for sure unless there’s some official confirmation from the company. In fact, given the performance differences between the Exynos and Snapdragon variants of the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, the Korean giant might just choose to stick to the same Exynos chip while bringing in the Snapdragon 823 to replace the Snapdragon 820. Of course, that will only help if the company hasn’t deliberately limited performance on the Snapdragon model of the S7 duo.

This is all pure speculation right now and you should consume it as such. Previous reports have suggested that the Galaxy Note 6 is going to have a 5.8-inch display and 6GB of RAM. What we know for sure right now, and have exclusively reported on, is that the Galaxy Note 6 is going to be IP68 water resistant.

T-Mobile releases Marshmallow for the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge

It was reported three weeks ago that T-Mobile could soon release the much-awaited Marshmallow update for the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge, and today it has. Magenta is now rolling out said update for the aforementioned devices bumping the OS version up to 6.0.1. The update is rolling out over-the-air and it should go live for all users in the very near future.

T-Mobile had started testing the Marshmallow update for these devices late last month which gave us a hint that it won’t be too long before the carrier releases it. The update it’s sending out today weighs in at around 1.2GB which is the norm for major Android OS updates, version G920TUVU3EPD1, and G925TUVU3EPD1 is now being rolled out for the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge respectively. T-Mobile users who own last year’s Samsung flagships should expect to get an update notification on their handset soon if they haven’t already received it.

Samsung filed most international design patent applications in 2015

According to the Korean Intellectual Property Office, Samsung filed most international design patents in 2015 under the Hague Agreement. The company filed 1,132 design patents last year, and these numbers were released by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) on April 10.

Samsung was followed by the Swatch Group of Switzerland, Fonkel, and Volkswagen AG of Germany with 511, 438, and 418 patent application filings, respectively. South Korean firms collectively filed 1,282 patent applications, making the country fourth largest in this aspect. Germany, Switzerland, and France were the top three countries with 3,453, 3,317, and 1,317 patent applications, respectively.

The Hague Agreement is an international registration system where firms from designated member countries can obtain protection of industrial designs by filing a single international application. Moreover, these patent applications can be filed in a single language without a need to file them through a registered attorney or an agent, making the whole process simpler and cost-effective.

Only European countries were using the Hague Agreement, but major countries including the US, Japan, and South Korea joined the system recently, and a whopping 16,435 design patent applications were filed last year. Currently, 83 countries can file industrial design patent applications using the system.

Verizon rolls out Galaxy S6 edge+ Marshmallow update, minor update for the Note 5

A month after updating the Galaxy Note 5 to Marshmallow, Verizon is bringing the latest version of the OS to the Galaxy S6 edge+, the Note 5′s spiritual sibling. Verizon notes that the S6 edge+ is the first Samsung device to get Marshmallow on its network – that’s not exactly true, and the carrier probably had the update ready, decided not to release it until now, and forgot to remove the incorrect text. In any case, if you have your S6 edge+ connected to Verizon, the wait for Android 6.0 ends today.

Marshmallow brings new Edge panels, improvements to the camera’s Live Broadcast feature and support for Wi-Fi calling. General Marshmallow features are onboard as well, including Google Now on Tap for instant contextual information across the operating system, Doze for longer idle battery life, and better control over app permissions. The Amazon Appstore gets the boot as a preloaded application though you can always grab it from the Play Store to continue your retail purchases.

Verizon is also pushing out a minor update to the Galaxy Note 5, with fixes for connectivity issues that have plagued the device after the 6.0 update. Both updates are available over the air and your phone will notify you when the time is right. Not willing to wait? Just head to the Settings » About device menu and hit the Update now button to grab the update right away. That won’t necessarily work, but it’s better to check yourself than wait for the update to arrive of its own accord (which can take a couple of days).

Samsung has sold more than one million curved monitor products

Samsung has announced that it has sold over one million curved monitor products worldwide. The company came out with its first curved LED monitor back in September 2014 and has since expanded the product lineup to include multiple curved monitors. Samsung says that it now accounts for over 85 percent of all global curved monitor sales.

The curved monitors are designed to match the natural shape of the human eye and they feature uniform center-to-edge viewing distances to provide a more comfortable and immersive viewing experience. Samsung’s curved monitors are ideal for gamers and at-home entertainment users due to their extra-wide viewing angles and enhanced contrast ratios. Samsung’s latest curved monitor offerings include the 27-inch CF591 and the CF390 that’s available in 23.5- and 27-inch models and it goes without saying that the company is only going to add more products to this lineup in the future.

Samsung closes in on Intel in semiconductor market share

Samsung is closing in on Intel in the semiconductor sector as its market share increased by 0.9 percent when compared to a year earlier. According to data from industry tracker IHS, the South Korean electronics giant now has a market share of 11.6 percent, while Intel has a market share of 14.8 percent. Samsung is the second largest semiconductor firm in the world, while Intel still stands as the leader.

Data shows that the gap between the market share of these two firms is narrowing. The difference between the market shares of Intel and Samsung was 5.3 percent in 2012, 4.2 percent in 2013, and just 3.2 percent in 2015. SK Hynix, which now stands as the third largest semiconductor brand in the world, beat Qualcomm with a market share of 4.8 percent.

Band adapter for the Gear S2 goes on sale in Germany

Samsung has started selling the Band Adapter for the Gear S2, which was leaked last month, in Germany. Priced at €27.5, the adapter allows a Gear S2 user to pair any standard watch strap with their smartwatch, which is not possible otherwise. It is currently on sale through telefon.de in Germany, and might become available in other European and North American markets soon.

Unlike the Gear S2 classic, the Gear S2 comes with a proprietary adapter that is compatible only with watch bands released by Samsung. If you want to pair any other watch strap that caught your eye at a usual watch store, you’ll have to use this band adapter with the non-classic variant of the Gear S2. It is available in dark gray and white, so you can choose the one that suits your smartwatch.
