Samsung should make available all color and storage variants of a device from day one

The Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8+ were launched in India in March. However, only 64GB variants were launched, and they were only available in three colors. Two months later, the 128GB storage variant of the Galaxy S8+ with 6GB RAM was launched in the country. Now, the company has announced the availability of the Orchid Grey color variant of the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8+ for the Indian market. A similar thing happened with the Galaxy S7 last year. Samsung announced Pearl Black and Pink Gold variants of the device, but only when the Galaxy Note 7 was recalled so that it could get some momentum going.

While Samsung has improved when it comes to launching various color variants across a wide range of markets, considering that it is the largest smartphone brand in the world and that it competes with Apple, it shouldn’t have a problem making all variants available from day one. Even if there are stock shortages of a particular color or storage variant in any market, it should at least announce that it plans to launch them at a later stage so that people who wish to buy those variants can wait.

Right now, there’s no official communication from Samsung regarding its plans, and this is cause for concern for anyone who purchases one of the initially available color or storage models just because the model they wanted wasn’t released. Samsung usually decides what colors will be launched based on what consumers in a country prefer, when it should instead be putting everything on the market and letting the consumer decide.

What do you think? Have you faced any such problems in buying Galaxy smartphones in your country?

Galaxy A5 and A7 (2016) receive June security patch in India

If you own the Galaxy A5 (2016) or Galaxy A7 (2016) in India, then keep your eyes peeled for an update notification. Samsung has started rolling out the June security patch for the handsets in India. The changelog also mentions that the update includes a patch for a “critical security vulnerability.”

The update itself weighs just under 40MB which means that it doesn’t bring any new features for the devices. Not like they were expected, given that both devices are already running on Android 7.0 Nougat, which is the latest and greatest iteration of the Android operating system.

The security patch for the month of June 2017 features 96 fixes for Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) in the Android operating system aside from fixes for 23 vulnerabilities in Samsung’s software.

Since the latest firmware release brings updates to the security policy, users will not be able to downgrade to the old software once they’ve upgraded their device to this firmware version. Other than the security patches, the latest update also brings the usual overall device performance improvements as well.

The June security patch for the Galaxy A5 (2016) and Galaxy A7 (2016) is now being rolled out in India. Those who haven’t received an update notification already should expect to do so in the near future.

Thanks, Rahul!

Samsung details contents of July security patch

Right on time, Samsung has taken to its Security Blog to reveal the contents of this month’s maintenance release, which addresses a total of 65 Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) in the Android operating system and 16 weaknesses in the firm’s Galaxy-branded smartphones and tablets.

As expected, the majority of the patches are listed as “privately disclosed” to prevent hackers from exploiting them before the firmware is rolled out to eligible devices. When exactly the upgrade will start making the rounds is unknown, though we expect it to arrive on some handsets as early as next week.

Stay tuned.

Orchid Grey Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ are now available in India

We’re not sure when Samsung made it available, but you can now purchase the Orchid Grey color variant of the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ in India. This is the standard model with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage we’re talking about. The 6GB RAM variant (with 128GB inbuilt storage) is still available only in Midnight Black and probably won’t ever get other color options, given how its notably higher price will attract less sales. With the Orchid Grey option, the Galaxy S8+ is available in four colors in India, while the Galaxy S8 is available in three.

The Orchid Grey versions are only available through Samsung’s official website, where Samsung is also offering a few bonuses. There’s a free wireless charger with each order, HDFC bank credit and debit card owners get a Rs. 3,000 cashback, and subscribers of network operator Jio get double the data on its internet plans. Pricing for the Galaxy S8 and S8+ remains the same – the former is available for Rs. 57,900, while the latter costs Rs. 64,900. Our review can tell you if Samsung’s new flagships are worth those price tags.

It’s disappointing to see Samsung continuing to delay the launch of particular color options for its devices, although it’s also good to see the company making more options available in different markets, something it has failed at miserably in the past. If you still haven’t gotten your hands on the Galaxy S8 or S8+ but are now interested thanks to the arrival of the Orchid Grey option, go ahead and visit Samsung’s website to place an order. You can also buy the phones from Flipkart (Galaxy S8 | Galaxy S8+), although the retailer doesn’t have every color available.

Note: If Samsung’s official site gives you a ‘Forbidden’ error, try opening it in an incognito/private window, or try using another browser.

[Poll] Do you think Bixby Voice will be available internationally before the Galaxy Note 8 launches?

Bixby Voice was originally set to launch on board the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+, but a lack of resources meant the firm was only able to release the feature in one region: South Korea.

However, last month Samsung kicked off an Early Access Program for Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ owners in the United States wanting to try out Bixby Voice — but it wasn’t exactly well-received.

Shortly after it was made available, a number of testers took to the internet to complain that it wasn’t able to answer simple questions. Apparently, it couldn’t even identify the president.

A recent report claims that Bixby Voice will launch in the United States by the end of July, but judging by the current state of the feature, it doesn’t seem likely… at all.

To be completely honest, we’re not even sure it’ll be ready by the time the Galaxy Note 8 is unveiled and if that turns out to be the case, the dedicated Bixby button will go to waste once again.

This bodes the question: do you think Bixby Voice will be available internationally before the Galaxy Note 8 hits the shelves? Be sure to let us know by casting a vote in the poll below.

Samsung’s new infographic shows how Knox completely secures your digital life

Samsung’s mobile security suite Knox now comes with almost every mid-range and high-end Galaxy smartphone. When it was first introduced, Knox was meant for keeping safe corporate data, but the South Korean smartphone giant added more features and extended it for normal consumers. Now, the company has released an infographic that showcases how Knox secures all facets of our digital lives.

Knox is a multi-level security solution where it is integrated into the hardware as well as software of a device. It works at three levels: chipset, operating system, and apps to protect the data from intrusion, malware, viruses, and any such threats. Knox can be used to keep personal and professional data separate, and the data can only by accessed by your biometric information such as fingerprint or iris.

Knox also keeps safe your credit and debit card information as well as Samsung Pay transactions. You can also save your website login details using Samsung Pass, a new feature that was released with the Galaxy Note 7. The security suite also offers a way for corporates to completely tailor a Galaxy device according to their needs using its Mobile Device Management (MDM) features.

Here’s how Samsung became the world’s most profitable tech company last quarter

Analysts had long predicted that the second quarter of 2017 would turn out to be a great one for Samsung. The company is predicted to post its highest quarterly operating profit ever in this period. It has even been predicted that Samsung’s operating profit in the period ending June 2017 will be higher than Apple.

Not only is it likely going to be higher than its main rival, Samsung’s operating profit this quarter is predicted to be higher than all tech companies, including behemoths like Google, Facebook, Amazon and Netflix. These top four tech companies posted an operating profit of $11.15 billion in Q1 2017 combined.

Samsung published its earnings guidance for Q2 2017 earlier today and those predictions seem to be coming true. It expects consolidated sales of around KRW 60 trillion or $53 billion. Operating profit is estimated to come in around KRW 14 trillion or $12.1 billion.

This would be the first time that Samsung overtakes Apple in operating profit. Analysts predict that Apple’s operating profit during this period may come in at $10.55 billion. It would also make Samsung the most profitable company in the world in the quarter ending June 2017.

It has taken the company nearly four years to beat its own previous record. The last time Samsung posted a record-high operating profit was back in the third quarter of 2013 when it posted 10.16 trillion won in operating profit. When compared to last year’s numbers, Samsung’s revenue and operating profit will be up 18 percent and 72 percent year over year.

This is a turnaround story for the history books. Samsung has been able to pull this off in less than a year after one of its biggest product and PR disasters ever: the Galaxy Note 7. The company took billions in losses after the Galaxy Note 7 was discontinued. Many were quick to comment that the company’s downfall had begun but Samsung put its head down, got to work and is on track to make history.

The breakdown of the numbers will be provided once Samsung releases the full earnings for Q2 2017. We’ve seen the company’s performance improve in the past few quarters primarily due to the stellar performance of its chip and display businesses. Those divisions enabled the company to still report a profit even after the Galaxy Note 7 eviscerated the mobile division’s profit.

It’s going to be a similar story in the previous quarter. Samsung is benefitting from the higher prices for memory chips that are used in all computing devices. It doesn’t hurt that Samsung is one of the biggest suppliers of memory chips in the world.

The company also has a virtual monopoly in the small-to-medium-sized OLED display panel market. Since more manufacturers are now opting for OLED displays for new smartphones, they can only turn towards Samsung as it’s the only manufacturer that can supply in volume at this point in time.

Credit also goes to Samsung for making improvements elsewhere. The company has successfully cut manufacturing costs for memory chips. That has been a big factor in the continuous revenue growth from this division.

Analysts predict that chip prices will continue to rise in the current quarter which means that Samsung just might post another record operating profit in the third quarter of 2017. Prices for DDR3 4GB DRAM chips have averaged $2.97 in the previous quarter. That’s a healthy rise in price compared to $1.58 from just a year earlier.

Samsung is believed to be on track to replace Intel as the biggest chipmaker on the planet by sales later this year if it is able to keep up with this momentum. That’s certainly a significant achievement.

All of this plays very nicely into Samsung’s hands and plasters a lot of green on its balance sheets. No wonder the company is investing billions of dollars into its component businesses to ensure that it remains on top. This is a veritable cash cow for the company.

Semiconductors and displays might have kept the ship afloat post-Galaxy Note 7, but Samsung’s smartphone division has bounced back in spectacular fashion this year. The Galaxy S8 is perhaps the greatest smartphone that Samsung has ever created. It was breaking records right out of the gate and is likely to end up being Samsung’s best-selling smartphone to date.

The Galaxy S8 was launched to rave reviews in April this year. The handset couldn’t contribute much to Samsung’s Q1 2017 earnings as the quarter had almost wrapped up by then. Q2 2017 is the first full quarter of the Galaxy S8’s availability and it goes without saying that it has contributed significantly to the company’s bottom line.

Samsung hasn’t revealed sales figures for its new flagship smartphone but conservative estimates from market analysts put the figure in the tens of millions. We’ll get a better sense of the Galaxy S8’s contribution once the earnings are broken down division-wise in the final result.

Investors have predictably been bullish on the company. Samsung’s stock has soared 33 percent this year alone, adding to the respectable double-digit gains made in the previous year.

All that goes up must come down, as the saying goes, but it can be said with certainty that this is an outcome that Samsung wants to avoid. The company has plans in place to consolidate these gains and maintain momentum in the coming quarters.

It’s making forward-thinking investments for precisely this purpose. The mobile division is particularly going to consolidate its gains in the premium segment of the market. The hotly anticipated Galaxy Note 8 will take the baton from the Galaxy S8 and likely prove to be another record-breaking product from Samsung.

Samsung will report the full earnings result for the second quarter of this year in the coming weeks. The numbers will show just how much of a contribution each of its divisions has made to get it to this historic moment compared to the previous quarter and the same time last year.

The company will likely talk about the steps that it’s going to take in order to continue this momentum in the coming quarters. Investors will certainly be very interested in knowing what it has planned.

I predicted in January that 2017 will be the year of Samsung. It certainly looks like it.

Sprint now rolling out June security update for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge

Sprint is the latest carrier in the pgnited States to start rolling out the June security update for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge. Unfortunately, the changelog doesn’t reveal any additional details about the 300MB upgrade, but judging by its size, we’re guessing it bundles a couple of additional bug fixes.

For those unaware, the June security release, which started making the rounds on June 6, transports a total of 96 fixes for Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) in the Android operating system and 23 patches developed by the firm specifically for its Galaxy-branded smartphones and tablets.

Read moreSamsung highlights contents of June security patch

Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge owners should receive a notification when the update is available to download and install on their handset, but if they’re feeling impatient they can manually check to see if it’s ready by opening up Settings, tapping Software Update, then selecting Download Updates Manually.

It’s worth noting that they’ll will need to have at least 50 percent of battery or connect their device to a power outlet in order to install the upgrade. We’d also recommend joining a reliable Wi-Fi network, as nobody with a strict data limit wants to waste 300MB on a firmware update.

Galaxy S8+ with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage gets a price cut in India

Samsung announced the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8+ for the Indian market in April and launched them in May. These smartphones featured 64GB internal storage and 4GB RAM. Two months later, the company launched a special variant of the Galaxy S8+ with 6GB RAM and 128GB internal storage with a price tag of INR 74,990 ($1,162). Just one month after the launch, the company has dropped its price to INR 70,990 ($1,100).

Unlike the regular Galaxy S8+, which is available in four colors, the variant with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage is available only in Midnight Black. Apart from memory and storage, there’s no difference between this variant and the regular variant of the Galaxy S8+. The South Korean smartphone giant first launched this variant in its home market South Korea. Later, its availability was extended to Hong Kong as well.

Apple reportedly takes help from Samsung as suppliers fail to meet demand for iPhone 8 storage chips

After Samsung announced that it would spend close to $12 billion to increase the product of NAND chips, Apple has reportedly turned to the South Korean semiconductor giant for the provision of storage chips for its upcoming iPhones. According to a report from DigiTimes, Apple’s original suppliers for 3D NAND chips for the iPhone 8 as well as the iPhone 7s duo – SK Hynix and Toshiba – have a combined shortfall of 30 percent.

Samsung is currently the largest producer of NAND chips in the world, and can easily provide Apple with the remaining chips for upcoming iPhones. The US-based tech giant is expected to ship 224 million iPhones (including 50 to 60 million iPhone 8 units) in 2017. Apart from the rumored bezel-less iPhone 8, the company also plans to sell the iPhone 7s and the iPhone 7s Plus. We’re not sure whether all the iPhones would use these chips or just the iPhone 8.

Neither of the companies has provided an official statement about this deal, so it’s not confirmed at this point in time. Samsung recently expanded 64-layer 256GB V-NAND technology to all its NAND products. While the iPhone 7 uses 48-layer NAND chips for storage, the iPhone 8 is expected to use even better 64-layer NAND chips. However, the report states that SK Hynix plans to supply 72-layer NAND chips for iPhones.
