[Poll] How do you like your Galaxy S20 Ultra’s zoom functionality?

Back in 2017, Samsung launched its first flagship smartphone with a dual camera setup. The Galaxy Note 8 came with a 2x zoom lens next to its main 12MP camera. Samsung added an ultra-wide camera to its flagships last year (starting with the Galaxy S10), but it didn’t do anything about their zoom capabilities for two years after the Galaxy Note 8 was released.

The Galaxy S20 and Galaxy S20+ feature a 64MP telephoto camera that offers 3x lossless zoom and up to 30x digital zoom, while the Galaxy S20 Ultra gives you 4x optical zoom, 10x ‘hybrid optic’ zoom, and up to 100x digital ‘Space Zoom’. Thanks to its unique periscope lens, it’s the Galaxy S20 Ultra that brings a true upgrade in zoom prowess over previous Galaxy flagships, and it easily trumps its smaller siblings as well.

As we noted in our review, we think the Galaxy S20 Ultra does a swell job at up to 10x zoom and find even 30x shots quite usable. The 100x Space Zoom is more or less a gimmick, though if you want to, say, take a picture of the moon, you can get pleasing shots at up to 50x to 60x magnification just as long as you’re able to hold the phone steady enough.

In short, we love what the telephoto camera on the Galaxy S20 Ultra can do, and in our latest poll, we want to ask you what you think about the phone’s zoom capabilities. Are you impressed? Do you think it could have been better? Do you feel Samsung dropped the ball and should have made the zoom camera considerably better?

Tell us by voting in the poll below and by expanding on your thoughts down in the comments section!

Galaxy Watch Active 2 ECG support is a go, at least in Korea

Electrocardiogram (ECG) measurement was one of the Galaxy Watch Active 2’s most anticipated features, but it is something no one can use to this day as Samsung is still working on getting the necessary approvals from government authorities before ECG tracking can be enabled. Furthermore, while ECG functionality was expected to go live in the first quarter of 2020, Samsung had confirmed that it would need extra time to make sure the feature works as intended.

Well, it seems Samsung has been able to cross both hurdles at the same time. The company has announced that South Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) has cleared the Galaxy Watch Active 2’s ECG functionality. This means users in South Korea can finally take advantage of the ECG sensor to “measure and analyze their heart rhythm for irregularities indicating Atrial Fibrillation (AFib)” and also monitor their blood pressure.

Samsung will be providing an updated version of the Samsung Health app that enables ECG and blood pressure monitoring within the third quarter of the year, but the company isn’t clear on whether this time frame is for all markets or if at least South Korean users will get the ECG feature right away. Samsung does detail how ECG tracking will work (users will be required to lightly place a finger on the back/top button for 30 seconds while keeping their forearm still), so we’re assuming it will be enabling the feature in Korea soon.

It’s worth noting that the availability of ECG and blood pressure monitoring in your country will depend on how quickly Samsung is able to gain the necessary approval from local authorities. In the US, approval will come from the FDA, but the coronavirus pandemic could result in more delays that could push the release of the feature even further. As usual, we’ll let you know as and when Samsung makes any announcements, so stay tuned.

Galaxy Note 20+’s not-so-big battery upgrade confirmed

There have been rumors that there is no Ultra version of the Galaxy Note 20, only a Plus model as we saw last year. So it didn’t come as much of a surprise when a recent leak revealed the Note 20+ won’t be offering a major upgrade in battery capacity over the Galaxy Note 10+, and if you still had some hope that there would be something similar to the 5,000 mAh battery on the Galaxy S20 Ultra, prepare to be disappointed.

Galaxy Note 20+ battery capacity confirmed

The Galaxy Note 20+’s battery was revealed to have model number EB-BN985ABY and a capacity of 4,500 mAh in that leak from just a week ago. That same battery has now received 3C certification in China, and the certification lists the battery capacity plainly for all to see. The rated capacity of the Galaxy Note 20+ battery is 4,370 mAh, which should make for a typical capacity of 4,500 mAh (the Galaxy Note 10+’s 4,300 mAh battery, for example, has a rated capacity of 4,170 mAh). The Galaxy Note 20, meanwhile, is expected to have a 4,000 mAh battery.

Why is Samsung opting for a smaller battery for the Galaxy Note 20+ compared to the Galaxy S20 Ultra? The main reason is no doubt the fact that the Note 20 won’t come in an Ultra variant. Furthermore, the S Pen probably makes fitting a considerably larger battery without notably increasing the size of the device harder. Still, considering the Galaxy Note 20+ will have a display at least as big as the Galaxy S20 Ultra and higher — though reportedly more efficient — refresh rate technology, it’s unfortunate the battery capacity won’t be getting a major boost.
