First Look: Android 6.0 Marshmallow on the Galaxy Note 4

We’ve noted the changes Samsung would make with Android Marshmallow, such as the further flattening of TouchWiz, and Hungary users are now getting to experience Google’s sweet treat on their Galaxy Note 4. A new YouTube video provided by ardaiaron gives us a sneak peek into what Android Marshmallow is like for fortunate users who get the download.

The smartphone in the video is indeed a Galaxy Note 4, as can be seen by the aluminum frame around the phone. The aluminum frame added to Samsung’s design was a change from the ribbed faux aluminum design of the Galaxy Note 3 in 2013. Also, as to quell any doubt about the device in question, it features the heart rate monitor that was first implemented on the Galaxy S5; the Galaxy Note 4 was the first Note device to showcase the feature. Ardaiaron has the wallpaper that was first showcased on the Galaxy Note 4 present, and the model number “SM-N910F” for the device proves its identity without question. As you’ll note (pun intended), the Android version says “6.0,” which is the number of the Android Marshmallow update.

Some of the update changes are evident. The square icons have been “rounded,” matching the new icon layout in the Galaxy S6, S6 edge, S6 edge+, and the Galaxy Note 5. The S Health and Smart Manager icons seem smaller than in previous update versions. There is a new S Pen menu that matches that found on Samsung’s Galaxy Note 5, and Samsung also brought along the popular Off Screen Memo feature that gives you the ability to take notes when your screen is black.

Of course, with the build being Android Marshmallow, new changes from Google make their way to the Galaxy Note 4: Google Now On Tap, Doze, customizable app permissions, per app battery stats, and even the beginning of the Easter egg. The problem with the Android 6.0 build lies in the fact that, once you press the “M” to go into the Easter Egg, you end up with the “shrugging arms” expression. If you’ll remember, this was found in the early Developer Preview of Marshmallow; the actual build includes a “harshmallows” feature where the “bugdroid” must jump to avoid killer marshmallows. This doesn’t seem to find its way into the build, leading us to wonder whether this sneak peek is either 1) a Developer Preview or 2) the result of a root of some kind.

In addition to the shrugging arms expression, Ardaiaron notes that there is lag on his device, apps don’t load in the task manager as they should, and Samsung Cloud stopped operating during the course of the video. With the problems behind the build, it’s more likely that this is a Developer Preview. Time will tell, however, whether or not this is the real deal. At any rate, the Android Marshmallow update for the Galaxy Note 4 isn’t too far off now. If it is legitimate, then the latest leak of Marshmallow for the Galaxy Note 4 was all too genuine.

Samsung starts sending out invites for CES 2016

After IFA 2015 that happened in September this year, the next major electronics expo – CES 2016 – will happen in Las Vegas next month. Samsung generally releases a lot of consumer electronic products during these expos, and it will repeat the same feat during CES 2016. The South Korean electronics giant has started sending out invites for the event already.

Samsung will hold a press conference at CES 2016 on January 5, 2016 between 14:00 and 14:45 hours. There is currently no information on what South Korean electronics giant will unveil during its keynote. It was being rumored that Samsung might announce the Galaxy S7 early that its usual period, but that is unlikely to happen.

The company might reveal the Galaxy A9, which is expected to feature the Snapdragon 620 chipset, along with some other audio and video products. You can expect a live coverage of Samsung’s CES 2016 keynote on our website on January 5, 2016 during the mentioned time.

[Poll] How often do you use Samsung’s Multi Window feature on your device?

Of the countless features Samsung has offered on its Android smartphones and tablets over the years, Multi Window is one of our favorite ones here at SamMobile. Multi Window, which lets you run two apps at the same time, is probably the one feature that even naysayers of Samsung’s heavily customized Android skin would agree is extremely useful. From its beginnings on the Galaxy Note lineup, Multi Window is seen of many Galaxy devices today, including all of its flagships from the last couple of years, and it has even made its way to iOS and could be seen on stock Android someday.

While Multi Window is useful, however, it’s a feature that some users use regularly, some users rarely, and some users don’t touch at all. Because honestly, how often would you need to run two apps at once on a mobile device, especially on a smartphone where there isn’t much real-estate unless you’re using a phablet?

But again, it all depends on the user, and we created this poll to find out how popular Multi Window is among our readers. So, tell us SamMobile readers: How often do you use Multi Window on your Galaxy smartphone or tablet? Select an option in the poll below, and do leave a comment with your thoughts on one of Samsung’s nicest software features.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

Samsung now shows the Android security patch info on the Galaxy Note 5 and S6 edge+

After the major Android security threat dubbed Stagefright was discovered, Google was forced to improve security on its smartphone operating system. Many smartphone manufacturers, including Samsung, confirmed to keep up with monthly security patches that Google releases for Android.

Up until now, users weren’t able to see how up-to-date their devices were in terms of security. Now, Samsung has started showing the Android security patch level information with the latest update that has hit the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 edge+ recently. You can find the Android security patch information in the About Device section in the settings menu.

We’ve explained in our previous article about the software update that hit these high-end smartphones from Samsung that the changelog mentioned about this feature. This feature is also included by default in all the devices running Android 6.0 Marshmallow. This means that Samsung will have to release such updates every month to all its devices, but this would be a lot of work for Samsung since they release a lot of devices each year.

Samsung becomes the most favorite brand in Russia for fifth consecutive year

Samsung may not be able to beat Apple in the US in terms of popularity, but in markets like Russia and India, it is one of the most sought after brands. According to a new report from Russian research firm OMI, Samsung has been voted as the most favorite brands in the country. Samsung was voted as the most favorite brand for five years consecutively.

The South Korean electronics giant managed to get 20.1 percent of votes, defeating Sony (9.6), Apple (9.5), Adidas (8.5), and Nike (8). The survey was conducted in cities each with a population of at least a million residents and answered by more than 1500 participants. Samsung received 18.2 percent of votes last year, which goes on to show that its popularity has increased this year.

The company received 31.2 percent votes in the mobile phone segment, and ranked first for three consecutive years. In the audio and video segment, Samsung topped the chart for the fifth consecutive year with 39 percent votes, while it received 33.5 percent of votes in the tablet segment.

We love the Galaxy Note 5. We think it’s the most complete flagship Samsung has ever made, despite the fact that it takes away a couple of staple Note features. SamMobile’s review of the Note 5 came out back in October, and it has been around two months since I’ve been using it as a primary smartphone.

How has it held up after all this time of regular all-day usage? Well, it’s held up very nicely. Okay, so there’s a large crack at the top right of my phone, thanks to a drop that saw it fall flat on its face, but thankfully the drop didn’t do any damage to the display itself. Speaking of the display, the 5.7-inch Super AMOLED unit on the Note 5 is simply great. Everything on the screen looks stunning, even on the Basic display mode setting that makes colors more accurate but doesn’t add that horrible yellow tinge that previous iterations of Samsung’s Super AMOLED display would do.

Performance has been one of the worst issues with Samsung’s software, and even with the optimized TouchWiz, the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge slowed down after a couple of months of use. Whether it’s the 4GB of RAM or further optimization on Samsung’s part, the Galaxy Note 5 is still very smooth and fast. I rarely see a stutter or hiccup in regular usage, and apps continue to fire up quickly. Apps in the background still don’t seem to be able to stay in memory as long as one would like because of whatever changes Samsung has made to Android’s RAM management, but it’s not as bad as it was on the S6 and S6 edge.

The biggest indication of the multitasking improvements due to more RAM is the fact that third-party keyboard apps don’t take time to show up, which was a very irritating issue on the original S6 lineup. Also gone is the lockscreen lag that we talked about a couple of weeks ago. The latest update to hit the device seems to have fixed it, and compared to the Galaxy Note 4, the Note 5 is miles ahead as far as overall performance is concerned.

The camera is another aspect that has continued to impress. Good lighting conditions or not, the Galaxy Note 5 takes great pictures, and it takes them extremely quickly no matter how light or dark it might get. Seriously, the near-instant shutter speed in even the darkest conditions is one of the reasons I love this camera. The app itself hasn’t slowed down noticeably; it usually starts up quickly when the home button is double-pressed, though the launch can sometimes be slow when the screen is off.

What about battery life? Um, let’s just say it gets the job done but is nowhere near as good as the Note 4 or any previous Galaxy Note flagship. Battery life has improved over the weeks, partly due to Samsung’s new app optimization feature. This is the same as the Auto stop battery feature we saw on the S6 and basically starts stopping apps from running in the background all the time. It can be a problem when apps that should never shut down are killed (Android Wear being a good example), but you can disable the “optimization” for individual apps (from the Settings » Battery menu, under App optimization).

As for that S Pen, there hasn’t been much surprise. It continues to be a nice alternative to regular touch input. I don’t use it much except for copying text and typing faster, and it’s a tool that is there for those who need it but just gets out of the way for those who don’t. The push-to-eject mechanism is still an unnecessary extra step in access to the stylus, but with practice I can get it out faster than I could when I started using the phone.

The Galaxy Note 5 is just great. It’s not a good device for those who need a lot of physical storage on their smartphone (unless you get the 64GB variant), and it’s not for anyone looking for epic battery life. But for just about anything else, the Note 5 has it all. Great display, fast performance, an amazing camera, and a stylus that lets you get really productive if you need to. The best thing has been the fact that it hasn’t slowed down with continued usage over two months, and if the Galaxy Note 5 is available in your country, it’s a great purchase if you are looking for a large-screen flagship.
