Support breast cancer research by buying these unique Galaxy Themes

It’s the first day of October, which happens to be the Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Samsung fans can now show their support by purchasing two brand new Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) Galaxy Themes for their smartphones. Each theme costs $2.99, and Samsung claims that 100 percent of the purchase price (up to $100,000) will be directed towards funding critical breast cancer research.

The BCRF Galaxy Themes are US-bound

The new BCRF themes are available only on the Galaxy Theme in the US. The themes are quite dissimilar in design and aim to portray the fight against cancer in different ways. One of the themes is based on an interweaving pattern inspired by the breast cancer awareness ribbon. The other theme is a collection of stylized images of researchers; a tribute to more than 14 million hours spent in researching a cure for cancer.

This unique opportunity allows Samsung smartphone owners to make a contribution to lifesaving research. There are more than 3.5 million breast cancer survivors in the US and deaths have fallen by 40 percent over the past 26 years. The BCRF is the highest-rated breast cancer organization in the country. It engages the brightest minds in science and medicine, supporting them with grants to pursue their research.

Along with the two new Galaxy Themes, Samsung is also bringing new content to the Discovery tab in Samsung Health, including tips for breast cancer prevention. Once again, this content themed around the Breast Cancer Awareness Month is not available in Samsung Health for Galaxy smartphone users outside of the United States.

Independent Galaxy Fold robot test reveals more about the hinge durability

The Galaxy Fold has been put through another durability test, this time by San Francisco-based extended warranty service provider, SquareTrade. The company drop-tested the device, but also came up with a way to test Samsung’s claims on the Fold’s hinge durability. SquareTrade used its own robot to fold and unfold the phone 120,000 times and concluded – rather unsurprisingly – that the Galaxy Fold is quite a fragile beast.

Galaxy Fold hinge put to the test

About six months ago, Samsung released a video showcasing the Galaxy Fold’s testing procedure for the complex mechanical hinge. The company used a series of robots to fold and unfold the phone repeatedly, claiming that the Galaxy Fold should be good for 200,000 folds. That meant it would be good for 100 folds per day for five years.

SquareTrade recently simulated Samsung’s testing methods using its robotic contraption and the redesigned Galaxy Fold. The company tested the durability of the hinge by folding and unfolding the device 120,000 times and the results don’t seem to quite match Samsung’s previous claims.

In its own testing environment, SquareTrade found that the Galaxy Fold developed a pixel blob after 18,500 folds. This blob appears similar to the screen defect that was reported recently. It may have something to do with the inherently fragile nature of the foldable display panel.

One false alarm and many folds later, the hinge test was concluded at 120,000 folds, or just about three years at 100 folds per day, with what SquareTrade describes as “deteriorated hinge action.” The company also drop-tested the phone from a height of 6 feet (1.83m) with unsurprisingly disastrous results for both the foldable screen and the cover display. Check out the video below for the full test.

At the end of the day, the hinge seems to be doing its job fine. In practice, the phone would have to be folded hundreds of times a day over several years to top a total of 120,000 folds, and it’s only fair to expect some wear after a while. More worrying is the blob on the flexible screen, mainly because the reasons why it develops aren’t very clear. Samsung is investigating the defect reported last week so we should know more about that eventually.

Samsung to shut down its last smartphone factory in China

Samsung’s last smartphone manufacturing plant in China will be closing down at the end of the month, according to a recent report by Blogofmobile citing the Korean news outlet Chosun. Samsung’s Huizhou plant in the Guangdong province of China first fired up its conveyor belts in December 1992. Earlier this summer, Samsung decided to cut production and jobs at the Huizhou plant, signaling what will come to pass if the company’s influence in China will maintain its declining trajectory.

This shouldn’t be the end of Galaxy phones made in China

Samsung will continue to manufacture smartphones in its factories located in other countries including Vietnam and India. But as readers might be aware, Samsung has also been testing the waters with ODM devices manufactured under license by Chinese companies. Samsung’s first two ODM devices – the Galaxy A6s and Galaxy A10s – have not been assembled in Samsung’s facilities, and we assume the closing down of the Haizhou plant won’t have any effect on how future ODM phones wearing the Samsung badge will be developed in China. In fact, earlier estimates suggest the company could ship up to 40 million ODM phones manufactured in China by the end of the year.

One of the more obvious reasons behind Samsung’s decision to shut down its last-standing smartphone manufacturing plant in China could be attributed to the company failing to make a dent into the local smartphone market. Time will tell how the climate will continue to shift and whether or not Samsung will eventually have reasons to make a return to manufacturing phones in China. Until then, the company’s focus will shift to its factories located in other countries.

SamMobile Daily Recap, October 1, 2019: Galaxy Fold India, Verizon Tab S3 Pie update, and more

Galaxy A30 and J2 Core receive October 2019 security patch

The October 2019 security patch is now rolling out for the Galaxy A30 and Galaxy J2 Core, specifically the model numbers SM-A305GT and SM-J260G, respectively. Google has yet to detail the changes brought forth by the latest Android security patch and it’s unclear if Samsung introduced any new features along with the latest software release.

What’s interesting about this launch is that the Galaxy A30 also received the September 2019 security patch, even though the device is on to the quarterly security update schedule – same as the Galaxy J2 Core.

October 2019 security patch out for the Galaxy A30 and J2 Core

Case in point, the Galaxy A50 also received the October 2019 security update this week, but it previously skipped the September release. It’s not uncommon, though, perhaps an important fix needed to be sent out for the device. We will know for certain once the patch gets detailed in a couple of days.

At the time of writing, the October 2019 security patch is available for the Galaxy A30 in Brazil and Peru, and for the Galaxy J2 Core in Nepal. As usual, availability will gradually expand and reach more model numbers over the next few days and weeks. If the software package is already available in your region, you can download it over the air by tapping the notification on your phone. You can also check our firmware pages for the SM-A305GT and SM-J260G, and install it manually.

Did you know? Super Slow-mo clips can be saved in reverse

Numerous Galaxy smartphones take advantage of Super Slow-mo video recording, whether it’s right out of the box or after receiving the feature through a software update. Super Slow-mo allows users to record 0.4 seconds or 0.8 seconds of video at 960 frames per second, which results in around 14 and 26 seconds of super slow motion playback. But did you know that you can also save your Super Slow-mo recording in reverse?

With most Galaxy devices that support the feature, users can access the Gallery app and save two separate copies of a Super Slow-mo recording. One copy is played back in reverse, while the other is in forward & reverse. Similar results could technically be achieved with a video editor, but the method offered by Samsung right in the Gallery app is very straightforward – if not somewhat hidden – and doesn’t require any fiddling with sliders or timelines.

You can access the feature by opening the Gallery app, selecting the desired Super Slow-mo video, and swiping up (or tapping the three-dot context menu and selecting Details). Here you will see details on when and where the video was captured, its duration, size, location on the phone storage, etc. More to the point at hand, you will also notice three Super Slow-mo clips listed below, including the original version along with the versions played back in Reverse and Forward & Reverse.

Select the desired clip, tap Save in the upper-right corner, and select a file type. We recommend MP4 if the larger file size isn’t an issue, as the GIF format leads to fewer frames and a choppier video. Below are a couple of video samples (saved in MP4 format) showcasing the regular, Reverse, and Forward & Reverse slow-motion effects.

The feature is available on the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10 series, as well as the Galaxy S9Note 9, and Galaxy S8, but it’s not limited to flagships. It should also be offered by a few devices from the Galaxy A lineup, such as the Galaxy A50, the Galaxy A7 (2018), and Galaxy A9 (2018), but it is not available on the Galaxy A40 or the Galaxy A6+. In other words, if you own a Galaxy device with Super Slow-mo recording capabilities, make sure you check and see if these light editing options are shown inside your Gallery app. Feel free to share your findings in the comment section below.

Samsung expands Art Store with renowned works from the State Hermitage Museum

Samsung complements the Frame TV hardware with a digital Art Store that features famous paintings and photographs from world-renowned artists, museums, and photographers. The Art Store currently has more than 1,200 such works, and the company is adding a few more to the collection by partnering with the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Samsung says the Art Store will get 52 new works of art from various Russian and European painters by May 2020 as part of this partnership. These include “The Church Parade of the Finnish Life Guards Regiment” by Boris Kustodiev, “Poppy Field” by Claude Monet, “Rave te hiti aamu” by Paul Gauguin, “Houses Along a Road” by Paul Cezanne, “Boulevard Montmartre in Paris” by Camille Pissarro, “Lion Hunt in Morocco” by Eugene Delacroix, “Meetings of Abraham and Melchizedek” by Peter Paul Rubens, and more.

The Korean company already has such partnerships with a few other museums around the world, and the State Hermitage joins that list as the first Russian Museum. To display any of their artworks on the Frame TV, customers can either purchase the digital versions outright or subscribe to the Art Store at $5.99 per month for the complete collection.

“Samsung is thrilled to provide even more globally renowned works of art in The Frame’s Art Store. The State Hermitage Museum is home to some of the most well-known Russian paintings in the world, and this partnership is another important step forward in helping technology to blend more effortlessly into consumers’ lives,” said Jongsuk Choo, Executive VP of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics, commenting on the new partnership.

Official Disney cases for Galaxy S10, A series phones available in some countries

Official Disney-themed cases for the Galaxy S10 and a few other Galaxy devices, like the Galaxy A40, Galaxy A50, and Galaxy A70, have gone on sale in some countries. Samsung has been selling Marvel-themed cases for its devices for some time, and the Disney cases seem to be a new addition. Right now, only two designs are available, one with the Lion King’s Circle of Life theme and another with Toy Story character Buzz Lightyear, but we can expect more options to show up later on.

Like the Marvel cases, the Disney cases are smart cases and will change the home screen and lock screen wallpapers, theme, and the app icons on a device. The cases are made of hard plastic, and the ones for the Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10, and Galaxy S10+ are listed for €39.95-€39.99 on various retailer websites in the Netherlands, while the Galaxy A40, A50, and A70 cases cost €34.95-€34.99. Samsung is simply linking to those retailers instead of selling the cases itself, at least in the Netherlands and Latvia, two countries where we can confirm the cases are available.

If you’re interested in buying these cases and checking out if they’re available in your country, you can head over to the accessories section on Samsung.com (and select your country when asked). We’re not sure these cases will appeal to many people, and Samsung will hopefully expand the design options with other Disney characters and properties down the line.

Galaxy Fold launched in India for Rs. 1,64,999 (~$2320)

Samsung has made the Galaxy Fold official in India today, as it had promised. Those who had been looking forward to getting their hands on one might be put off by the price tag Samsung has attached to its foldable phone. At Rs. 1,64,999, or around $2320 based on current conversion rates, the Fold is priced considerably higher in India than other markets, no doubt because Samsung isn’t making the device locally as it does its non-foldable flagship phones.

Customers in India will have to prebook the Galaxy Fold via Samsung’s official online and offline stores, including the Samsung Opera House in Bengaluru. Pre-bookings start this Friday, October 4, and shipments will begin from October 20. Only the Cosmos Black color option will be available. Every customer who buys the device online will be visited by a concierge who will help them set up their Fold and help them understand everything they would need to do to take care of their shiny new foldable phone. The Galaxy Fold Premier Service will offer 24×7 on-call support and a one-time screen replacement for a discounted fee of Rs. 10,500.

Galaxy Fold is India’s first Snapdragon-powered Galaxy flagship in recent years

The Galaxy Fold, for those who need a refresher, comes with a foldable 7.3-inch AMOLED display and a 4.6-inch cover display, also of the AMOLED variety. It is powered by the Snapdragon 855 chipset, a first for a Galaxy flagship in India, and has 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. There’s a 4,380 mAh battery under the hood with support for fast wireless and reverse wireless charging (but not 25W wired charging). A capacitive fingerprint sensor is located on the right side of the device, below the power button.

There are six cameras: a triple camera setup on the back that’s usable both in phone and tablet form. There’s a 12MP primary F1.5/2.4 Dual Aperture camera, a 12MP F2.4 telephoto camera for 2x zoom, and a 16MP ultra-wide F2.2 camera. There’s a dual front camera above the 7.3-inch main display consisting of 10MP F2.2 and 8MP F1.9 sensors, and a single 10MP F2.2 camera above the cover display. The Galaxy Fold runs Android Pie with One UI 1.5 and supports Samsung Pay. It also comes bundled with the Galaxy Buds and lacks a headphone jack.

Will you be buying the Galaxy Fold in India? Do you think the pricing should have been lower and comparable to the pricing in other markets? Let us know down in the comments!

Samsung gets innovation award for the Galaxy S10’s Wi-Fi capabilities

Samsung has been awarded the ‘Best Wi-Fi Innovation Award’ by the Wireless Broadband Alliance for the Galaxy S10’s Wi-Fi capabilities. The Galaxy S10 is the first smartphone ever to win this award, and the two innovations in question are the S10’s support for Wi-Fi 6 networks and its Intelligent Wi-Fi features. Some of the latter are available on every Galaxy flagship, not just the Galaxy S10 devices, while Wi-Fi 6 support is present on the Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Fold as well.

As Samsung explains, Intelligent Wi-Fi uses “machine learning to ensure that users’ Wi-Fi connections are both smart and safe.” Found in the Advanced menu of the Wi-Fi settings panel on a Galaxy S10 and other Galaxy devices, Intelligent Wi-Fi can detect suspicious activity over a network and warn the user, turn Wi-Fi on automatically when the user is in a location where Wi-Fi is used frequently (like your home or office), and switch to mobile data when the connection to a Wi-Fi network isn’t strong enough. Samsung even says that Intelligent Wi-Fi allows the Galaxy S10 to more quickly detect weaker Wi-Fi signals inside elevators.

While Wi-Fi 6 is now supported on multiple Galaxy flagships, the Galaxy S10 was the first smartphone in the industry to come certified for the newest Wi-Fi standard. Wi-Fi 6, or 802.11ax as it’s technically called, offers up to 20 percent faster data transfer than Wi-Fi 5 (or 802.11ac, which is what all the 5GHz Wi-Fi networks are based on), especially when multiple devices are connected to a router. It does this while eating less battery power, although it will be a long time before Wi-Fi 6-enabled routers become affordable for the average consumer. Still, having support for it when you spend $1000 on a flagship smartphone makes sense, even if the technology won’t be usable in the immediate future.

Verizon releases Android Pie update for the Galaxy Tab S3

Samsung started rolling out the Android 9 Pie update for the Galaxy Tab S3 last month. Firmware updates tend to arrive a bit later on carrier-branded models. So it’s no surprise that Verizon has just now released the Android Pie update for the Galaxy Tab S3.

Owners of this tablet will be aware that it launched with Android Nougat onboard. This makes the Android 9 Pie update its final major firmware update. The Galaxy Tab S3 isn’t included in the list of Samsung devices that will receive Android 10.

Verizon releases Android Pie for the Galaxy Tab S3

Verizon is rolling out firmware version T827VVRU3CSH4 for the Galaxy Tab S3 on its network. The update brings all of the improvements that are part and parcel of Android 9. You can check out our One UI Feature Focus series to find out all that’s new with this update.

Some of the new features include Adaptive Battery which learns how you use your tablet with artificial intelligence and allows you to extract more life out of the battery by optimizing apps and services. Adaptive Brightness does something similar with the display brightness level to deliver additional power savings. Digital Wellbeing and the system-wide Night mode are included as well.

This update also includes the latest security patch for the month of September 2019. Verizon is currently rolling out the update over-the-air. Users should expect to receive a notification on their device shortly.

Noise cancelling AKG Type-C earphones for Note 10/Tab S6 listed online

Samsung finally seems to have launched the active noise cancelling USB Type-C AKG earphones that the company had said it would release alongside the Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10+. Samsung Korea and Samsung UAE have the earphones listed simply as ‘ANC Earphone (Type C)’, and the product page on Samsung’s Korea website says the earphones are compatible with “the Galaxy Note 10, Note 10+, Tab S6, Fold 5G, S10e, S10, S10 + and S10 5G and all Samsung smartphones and tablets without 3.5 mm terminal.”

Basically, these earphones should be compatible with most Galaxy phones that have a USB Type-C port, although it’s unclear if the active noise cancellation will also work on all devices that can output audio to these earphones. It technically should, and Samsung is touting noise cancellation by up to 99.15%, along with better stereo separation thanks to the USB Type-C plug. However, we will have to do a real-world test to see how the overall audio quality differs from the AKG earphones you get in the box with the Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+.

The ANC earphones come in black with blue highlights and are priced at 77,000 won in South Korea, which translates to around $65 USD. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like Samsung is selling these earphones in any other market at the moment – even Samsung UAE isn’t selling them online and is only providing a list of retailers where the product can be purchased in person. Fingers crossed widespread availability will not take long to happen.

Would you be interested in purchasing the ANC Type-C AKG earphones for your Galaxy Note 10 or other Galaxy device? Are the earphones listed on Samsung’s official website in your country? Let us know in the comments!
