Did Samsung just file a patent with images of the Apple Watch?

Samsung is often accused of copying Apple, that accusation is also the basis of a very long legal battle between the two companies, which is why it’s very surprising to see that Samsung would file a patent with some very familiar looking images. Its patent details swapping mechanisms for smartwatch bands and features design drawings of what is clearly the Apple Watch, based on that smartwatch’s marketing renders.

Samsung has used Apple Watch drawings alongside its own design drawings to showcase the different methods it has developed of swapping bands on smartwatches. Design elements of the Apple Watch are clearly noticeable in the patent drawings which would lead my to suggest that Samsung is actively gaining inspiration from its competitor’s product. Surely this won’t help the case of those who argue that claims of Samsung copying Apple are overblown. As to why Samsung thought this would be a good idea, well it’s anybody’s guess right now.

Christoph Waltz stars in Samsung’s latest ad for the Galaxy Note 7

Samsung has been bringing in some big celebrities to hawk its products in ads , we’ve already seen the likes of Wesley Snipes, Lil Wayne, James Harden and William H. Macy appear in an ad. Even Lil Wayne appeared in a few to show off the Galaxy S7′s water resistance. It has gone all out for the Galaxy Note 7 and brought in Oscar-winning actor Christoph Waltz, the Austrian-German actor who is best known for the movies he has made with the legendary Quentin Tarantino.

It’s a fun commercial that highlights all of the major features of the Galaxy Note 7 even as Waltz talks about America’s “tireless ambition” and its desire to achieve more even after all that it has achieved. Features highlighted in the advertisement include the new S Pen, water resistance, Samsung Pay, multitasking capabilities and camera. You should certainly check it out as it’s one of the better ads that Samsung has come up with recently.  The Galaxy Note 7 is already available for pre-order in the United States and will be released on August 19th.

China could get a Galaxy Note 7 with 6GB of RAM and 128GB storage

A lot of folks were disappointed to see that the Galaxy Note 7 doesn’t feature 6GB of RAM, despite so many rumors that said that that would be the case. Of course, it makes sense that Samsung chose to stick with 4GB of RAM, as there really isn’t any use case for 6GB of RAM in this day and age on a smartphone. Apps have only gotten leaner (and so has Android) when it comes to memory usage, and having too many background apps running in a phone is only going to be detrimental for battery life.

But that hasn’t stopped people from berating the Galaxy Note 7, and it looks like Samsung could oblige naysayers with a 6GB RAM variant of the device, at least in the Chinese market. The 6GB RAM variant can be seen listed online on the Geekbench website, and also on the Chinese Industry and Information Technology Ministry. It would also have 128GB of storage out of the box – Samsung had released a 128GB storage variant of the Note 5 in South Korea last year, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see the company throwing in 6GB of RAM for the 128GB model of the Note 7.

China, especially, would be a good choice for this variant. Chinese consumers are likely to be more critical of the Note 7 not having 6GB of RAM when manufacturers in the country are making it a feature on most of their new high-end smartphones. The OnePlus 3 is the most recent example of a phone with so much RAM from a Chinese OEM, and it wouldn’t hurt Samsung to offer a Note 7 variant with 6 gigs of memory to make sure it doesn’t lose a few customers to the extremely strong competition in the country.

Of course, it’s always possible this device won’t ever see the light of day, and all we can do is wait and see what Samsung plans to do. What do you think? Are you still hoping to see 6GB of RAM on the Note 7, or do you think the 4GB variant is enough?

Goal+ football app being launched exclusively for Samsung devices

Perform Media today announced a new strategic partnership with Samsung to exclusively provide the company’s handsets with the Goal+ football app. The app is powered by Goal.com’s news service and it features interviews with some of the biggest names in football. It also has bespoke integration of Opta performance data and provides fans with real-time visualisations as well as powerful comparison tools for major football leagues in Europe.

The Goal+ app provides exclusive features for the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge, it will enable users to control their Tizen TV Goal+ app from their handset while also being able to customize their Gear S2 smartwatch with the latest football news and live scores. Goal.com’s correspondents will be using the Galaxy S7 smartphones as well as Samsung’s Gear 360 cameras to capture unique content throughout the 2016/2017 season. This partnership between Perform Media and Samsung will surely bring a lot of interesting and immersive content for football fans everywhere.

Korean banks are rushing to leverage the Galaxy Note 7′s iris scanner

Samsung officially confirmed a couple of days ago that the Galaxy Note 7 is its first handset to feature an iris scanner. The company also announced its Samsung Pass service which will provide an even safer mobile banking experience to users as Samsung is working with major financial institutions in the US to enable their apps to support user authentication using the iris scanner. Banks in Samsung’s home country of South Korea are also rushing to support the new security feature.

According to reports, KEB Hana Bank and Woori Bank are working on apps which take advantage of the Galaxy Note 7′s iris scanner. They are aiming to release the apps around the same time the Galaxy Note 7 is going to be released in the market. KEB Hana Bank calls it “Selca Banking,” Selca basically means selfie, which is an easy way of saying that users will be able to have a safer mobile banking experience by using the iris scanner for authentication. A similar service is being developed by Woori Bank. Shinhan Bank and KB Kookmin Bank are also said to be working on their apps for the Galaxy Note 7 that support its iris scanner. Clearly the banking industry is excited about this feature.

Samsung Galaxy S7 edge 3,100mAh wireless charging battery pack review: a winner with quirks

I’ve been using a Samsung Galaxy S7 edge since March 9th when it arrived at my doorstep (2 days before the phone went on sale worldwide, thanks to being a Verizon pre-order customer), but I’ve never been too keen on battery packs despite my love of battery cases.

Most battery packs tend to quickly wind down in terms of battery life after a month or two, and so many charges can quickly deplete the juice they have that it gets to a point where you’d rather just carry the phone with a sealed battery than carry a case that can only get you an additional hour of battery life (at most, after less than 500 charging cycles – though Mophie, for example, has promised up to 500 charges being covered under warranty).

But, when I saw that Samsung had provided its own take on wireless charging battery packs with one designed for the Galaxy S7 and another designed for the Galaxy S7 edge, I decided to take a leap of faith and invest in yet another battery pack that was designed to run out after so many charges.

Boy was I surprised.

The Galaxy S7 edge wireless charging battery pack has proven to be the go-to option for me with the company’s most beautiful smartphone yet (despite the Galaxy S7 acclaim, I still think the Galaxy S7 edge is the true flagship of the S line). As with everything, Samsung’s wireless charging battery pack has its strengths and drawbacks. What do I think about the battery pack? I’m not giving that one away until the end of this post, so keep reading.

Advantages 

Easy fit for the Galaxy S7 edge 

There are some advantages that make me really love Samsung’s Galaxy S7 edge wireless charging battery pack. First, the battery pack fits on your phone like a ball in a glove, and the S7 edge fits into the battery pack in the same way that you would step into your favorite pair of shoes. I assumed that it would be as difficult to remove as a Mophie juice pack or an Otterbox case from past phones, but it was easier than either of these: you need only place the phone on top of the case and lightly push the sides into the case, instead of having to press it down and keep snapping or pushing to get it to go in.

One gentle push is all you need to get the phone into the battery pack. When you prepare to take the case off the phone to just hold your phone in its fragile state (it’s fragile, I know, but beautiful), you need only lift up the bottom portion of the phone near where the speaker is located and the S7 edge just lifts out of the wireless charging battery pack. It’s as if the wireless charging battery pack was made for the Galaxy S7 edge – because it is.

Excellent build quality, elegant and rugged, all at once 

Samsung deserves credit for its Galaxy S7 edge wireless charging battery pack (3100mAh) because it’s not built like most Otterbox cases out there that are designed to protect your device. I will never forget how many times I was told by retail employees that Otterbox cases will protect your phone. Oh, they do; it’s just that they do little else, and when you pry your phone from them (yes, “pry” is the most fitting word to describe it), you could also break the case in the process.

With Samsung’s Galaxy S7 edge wireless charging battery pack, you’ll find yourself wanting to keep it on your phone, then loving when you take it off. Not only is it comfortable to take off your phone and comfortable to place your phone in, it also has an excellent build quality. The outsides of the battery pack that you use to grip the device in hand are made of soft rubber, while the back of the battery pack itself is made of a textured plastic that has a print design similar to that of Samsung’s Keyboard Cover for the Galaxy Note 5.

The battery pack doesn’t protect the speakers or micro-USB port, but then and again, it doesn’t need to. Samsung made the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge water and dust-resistant, so the device has great protection from the elements. With no need to provide this protection in a case because the phone has it by default, Samsung could devote more time to crafting a battery pack that would flaunt every curve of the Galaxy S7 edge.

The battery pack is elegant and rugged, both at once, making it the perfect battery pack for those who want to flaunt their Galaxy S7 edge. If you’re a “flaunter,” I don’t blame you.

Wireless charging implementation matches wireless charging expectations from Samsung’s charging pads 

Not only does Samsung’s wireless charging battery pack snuggle up your Galaxy S7 edge like you’d snuggle in your favorite blanket, but it also has excellent recharging implementation. When you need to recharge the device, you need only plug into the wall by way of a Samsung adapter, and the wireless charging battery pack will charge up on its own. If your Galaxy S7 edge has died along with the battery pack, just connect your micro-USB Samsung cable into the wireless charging battery pack USB port and the cable will charge both the battery pack and the phone.

For those who want to charge their devices via a cable but don’t want to charge them via the S7 edge’s USB port, you need only charge the battery pack and the phone will charge, too. It’s a remote charging method that allows you to have the kind of charging you want while still protecting the phone’s internal battery from any damage. If anything, the wireless charging battery pack will take the impact, not the phone (and anything that safeguards the S7 edge is worth applauding, right?).

The battery pack is called “wireless charging battery pack” for a reason: it works like all other wireless charging pads. If you’ve owned or currently own a wireless charging pad, you’ll know that when the phone is placed on the pad, there’s an on-screen animation that shows you the phone is charging. The same thing happens when you tap the button at the top of the wireless charging battery pack to start charging the device. There are 4 LED lights at the top to the right of the power button that light up as the battery pack charges, then flick green when the battery pack starts juicing up the Galaxy S7 edge.

To turn off the battery pack, just press and hold until you see the phone battery stop charging on-screen. When you charge the phone and battery pack together, the battery pack will give off a solid green light to let you know it is charged. Of course, it’s not a cylindrical green like what you’d find on the wireless charging pad, but the color matches and will prove familiar with what most individuals expect that have used wireless charging pads before.

Galaxy S7 edge wireless charging battery pack is light and keeps the phone easy to hold – even with the battery pack on 

While all this sounds good, someone will ask, “okay, this is great, but what about the battery pack itself? Isn’t it bulky?” In a word, “No.” Not. At. All. The Galaxy S7 edge wireless charging battery pack is quite slim, though it does add some slight heft to the device. I’ve tested it out with my own pants pockets and can confirm that it is still very portable and light, though. You won’t have any problems throwing it in your pocket – unless your pockets are too small, a matter of individual taste.

The quirks 

Doesn’t double the battery capacity 

Samsung’s S7 edge wireless charging battery pack is fantastic due to the three reasons above, but there are some quirks. First, the battery pack is only a 3100mAh battery pack that doesn’t match the exact size of the S7 edge’s battery (3,600mAh). The Galaxy Note 5′s battery pack that was on backorder here in the US was a 3,400mAh battery pack that would’ve doubled the internal 3,000mAh battery of the Galaxy Note 5, but such is not the case with the Galaxy S7 edge’s battery pack.

In the future, I’d like to see Samsung create a 3,600mAh wireless charging battery pack for the Galaxy S7 edge or the Galaxy S8 edge. After all, if you’re looking to add to the battery life you already have with a battery pack, why would you want to attach a battery pack that has a smaller battery capacity than that of your phone?

Even if the Galaxy S8 edge has a larger battery capacity next year, I’d still like to see Samsung create battery packs for future smartphones that match, if not exceed, phone battery capacity. Creating a 3,400mAh wireless charging battery pack for a 3,000mAh-endowed Galaxy Note 5 is acceptable, but creating a 3,100mAh wireless charging battery pack for a 3,600mAh-endowed Galaxy S7 edge is a bit underwhelming. I wondered why I couldn’t add another 3,600mAh battery capacity in a battery pack, and I’m sure many consumers who use this will eventually ask themselves the same thing.

The wireless charging battery pack’s 3100mAh battery only provides about 50% recharge, not 100% 

Here’s one of the largest quirks or drawbacks about the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge 3100mAh wireless charging battery pack: the 3,100mAh battery pack only provides a 50% battery recharge for the Galaxy S7 edge, not 100%. Of course, it doesn’t have the matching battery capacity, as I said above, but even then, with a 3100mAh battery, you should get at least a 65% battery recharge – not just 50%. I tried this on both wireless charging battery packs (both Samsung, both 3100mAh) that I received, to make sure that it wasn’t just a defective battery pack. It took two battery packs to charge the device, one after the other, before the phone’s internal battery reached 100%.

I’ve also done the math to see what battery charge I could expect. Since it would charge 3100mAh out of 3,600mAh, I should see an 86% battery charge, right? Nope, it’s only 50%, a staggering 36% battery transference loss in-between leaving the battery pack and heading into the phone’s internal battery.

What this shows is that there’s quite a bit of battery life lost in the transference process, so you may find one battery pack to be insufficient for your charging needs. Samsung says that its 3,100mAh Galaxy S7 edge wireless charging battery pack will get you “an extra few hours of power,” and the Korean giant’s battery pack doesn’t disappoint. Keep in mind, though, that these “extra few hours” will not translate into an entire additional day of battery; you’ll need two battery packs from Samsung to accomplish that.

In the future, I’d like to see Samsung provide greater battery life on a full recharge than that of its current 3,100mAh wireless charging battery pack for the Galaxy s7 edge. Even if the best Samsung can give is 75%, I’d like to see the battery capacity on these thin and light battery packs improve.

The wireless charging battery pack provides standard wireless charging, not fast wireless charging 

The Galaxy S7 edge wireless charging battery pack operates like a wireless charging pad, but it disappoints in one aspect of its wireless charging outside of battery capacity: it charges at the standard wireless charging rate and isn’t fast wireless charging-compatible. What this means is that it’ll take longer to charge the Galaxy S7 edge wireless charging battery pack than it will to charge your Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 edge – both of which rely on standard wireless charging speeds and lack fast wireless charging.

The Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge have fast wireless charging speeds, but the S7 edge will charge faster on the wireless charging pad than it will the battery pack Samsung has given here: 3-4 hours charging from 0 to 100% for the wireless charging pad, but 4.5+ hours for the battery pack to charge your phone from 0 to 100% (and that’s if you use two wireless charging battery packs rather than one).

I know, I know, most consumers don’t want something to take longer, and many do not rely on wireless charging because it takes double the time to charge their phones than wire charging does. Now, with that said, I should also advise you that wireless charging is a more “green” way to charge your device, maintaining your battery life in excellent condition without burning out your internal battery (as USB charging is wont to do), so wireless charging should be adopted by all Galaxy smartphone users. I am aware that there are many who’ll respectfully disagree with my statements, but you can’t say I didn’t try to help.

With the Galaxy S8 edge, I’d like to see Samsung bring out a fast wireless charging-compatible battery pack so that users can take advantage of the fast wireless charging tech already within their smartphones.

One More Thing… 

This could be considered a drawback in the eyes of many, though I see it as more of a personal wish fulfillment than anything else.

The Galaxy S7 edge 3,100mAh wireless charging battery pack lets you USB charge the battery pack, but it’s my wish that in future editions, Samsung would give the battery pack the same wireless charging capabilities that the Galaxy S7 edge has. In other words, the same way that you can drop your Galaxy S7 edge and Gear S2 smartwatch on the wireless charging pad to see them charge, you should be able to drop the battery pack on the charging pad and watch it charge as well. Of course, this isn’t necessary for Samsung, but, as with everything else, it’s something I’d like to see.

Conclusion 

The Galaxy S7 edge wireless charging battery pack (3,100mAh) is an excellent help with battery life and a great means of protection for your device. My phone (with the battery pack) dropped from a lampstand during the course of using the battery pack, and it didn’t have one scratch or crack on it – even though the battery pack went one way and the S7 edge went another.

There are some quirks, and these may influence your decision to buy or not, but I can live with them for now. And, while the $89.99 retail price for the Galaxy S7 edge wireless charging battery pack may throw off some, you can always pick them up for as low as $59.99 via renown online retailers (Amazon is a good source, as I purchased my own from there).

Galaxy S7′s popularity is forcing Russian carriers to stop boycott of Samsung phones

There is ample evidence to substantiate the claim that the Galaxy S7 has been a huge hit for Samsung. The stellar performance of its flagships enabled the company to bring in its best quarterly operating profit in two years. Demand for the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge is so high in Russia that carriers in the country are ending their boycott of Samsung phones because they don’t want to miss out on the revenues they can generate by selling the Galaxy S7 series.

Russia’s carriers effectively boycotted Samsung phones when the country’s largest mobile carrier – Mobile TeleSystems PJSC – started undercutting all of them on price by taking advantage of the volume discounts that Samsung provides to channel partners. VimpelCom operates more than 3,000 stores in Russia and it stopped buying handsets from Samsung in protest. Major retailer MegaFon did the same. Mobile TeleSystems effectively had a monopoly on Samsung smartphones and it reaped the benefits as Samsung handsets drove a 63 percent increase in the carrier’s total smartphone shipments in the first half of this year.

Chalk this up as a win for Samsung because VimpelCom has confirmed that it’s resuming sales of Samsung phones in the country as it seeks to cash in on the Galaxy S7 demand. MegaFon is discussing cooperation with Samsung and restart sales of its handsets in the near future.

Designers support Apple in patent fight against Samsung

Samsung called on the United States Supreme Court to review a decision which awarded Apple hundreds of millions of dollars in damages due to some of the company’s devices allegedly infringing on Cupertino’s patents. Samsung is of the view that damages should be limited to infringing components of a device instead of being extended to all profits from the infringing device. The Supreme Court will be hearing the matter later this year in October. Many Silicon Valley companies have come out in support of Samsung’s position but a group from the design industry today came out in support of Apple and told the Supreme Court that Apple rightly deserves the damages awarded for infringement of its design patents.

More than 100 designers and educators have signed a court brief in support of Apple, saying that the damages are fair because it’s a product’s unique look that drives people to buy it and that’s something which needs to be protected. The list of designers who are supporting Apple include the likes of Alexander Wang, Calvin Klein and Paul Smith. Also on the list is the design director for Bentley Motors, the industrial design director at Parsons School of Design and the editor-in-chief of Wallpaper magazine Tony Chambers. The view they have expressed in the court brief is that the “look of the product comes to represent the underlying features, functions, and total user experience,” and that stealing a design leads to loss of sales which is why Apple deserves the damages that it has been awarded. Samsung isn’t likely to be fazed by this as its position is being backed by tech giants like Google and Facebook.

Samsung not confirming if the Galaxy Note 7 is Daydream VR compatible

A few months ago Google introduced a new virtual reality platform called Daydream. The platform has been designed for next-generation Android smartphones that are capable of running Android N. Samsung was confirmed as one of the companies that will be making Daydream-compatible handsets. The company isn’t confirming yet if its latest flagship – the Galaxy Note 7 – is compatible with Daydream.

Galaxy Note 7 comes with Android Marshmallow out of the box but it’s certainly going to be one of the first handsets that Samsung updates to Nougat when the latest iteration of Android is released to the public. Samsung isn’t confirming or denying if the Galaxy Note 7 is compatible with Daydream. When asked about the matter by UploadVR, the company provided the following vague statement: “We have a great, long standing partnership with Google and will continue to work with them on many fronts. We will stay tuned as Google provides more information on Daydream this fall.” We might get a proper answer from Samsung once Google provides more information about Daydream later this year. Rumors have also suggested that the Galaxy S8 is going to be Daydream-compatible.

Samsung publishes iris scanner details for the Galaxy Note 7

The next big thing from Samsung, the Galaxy Note 7, has now gone official, but, with the iris scanner being one of the new, mysterious, and most intriguing aspects of the latest-generation phablet, consumers are now trying to find out as much about the iris scanner as possible. As seen from a leaked video two weeks prior to this week’s announcement, the iris scanner works incredibly fast (some may say faster than the fingerprint scan since you need not even place your finger on the home button), but how exactly does it work?

In other words, what happens between your eye and the iris camera to process the iris scan?

Samsung has published details of just how the iris scanner works, showing a diagram of the human eye, the portion called the iris, as well as how the iris camera detects the iris and eyelid, embeds the iris scan as encrypted code, then accesses it when someone attempts to perform an iris scan to see if the embedded code matches the code of the eye in front of the iris camera. Samsung added the iris camera to capture human irises as well as an IR LED to prevent reflected light from contaminating iris scans in any way.

The iris scanner of the Galaxy Note 7 will be put to good use beyond just screen unlocking: there’s also Samsung’s new Secure Folder feature that lets you hide the content you don’t want other peeking eyes to see, and Samsung Pass, a new mobile banking security feature that lets you access financial statements and other personal information by way of iris scans. The Galaxy Note 7 iris scanner doesn’t work with glasses or babies, though, so visually challenged persons will find another challenge here.

As for the future of iris scanners, Samsung has said it intends to bring third-party support to the iris scanner, allowing human irises to unlock other apps and content within Android (and eventually, Tizen too). Eventually, the coveted iris scanner on the Galaxy Note 7 could make its way to mid-range devices. Considering Samsung Pay and its role in mobile payments, is a wise business decision.

SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus will kick off Galaxy Note 7 pre-orders on Saturday, August 6

South Korea’s three largest operators, SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus, have today revealed that they will start accepting pre-orders for the newly-announced Galaxy Note 7 both in-store and online at 9 a.m. on Saturday, August 6. The handset will only be available to purchase in the 64GB baseline model, which comes in three colors — Blue Coral, Gold Platinium, and Silver Titanium — each carrying an eye-watering price tag of 988,900 Won ($890).

All three carriers are offering their own discounts, though, to make the device that little bit more affordable:

• SK Telecom — A total saving of up to 480,000 Won for those who purchase the Galaxy Note 7 under a two-year contact using the T Samsung Card V2 credit card.
• KT — A discount of up to 360,000 Won for those who order the Galaxy Note 7 under a two-year contract using KT Olleh’s Super Card.
• LG Uplus — A 7 percent discount on monthly network usage payments for customers who buy the new handsetthrough the company’s online shopping mall, the U+Shop.

Just in case you missed our announcement post and hands-on coverage, the Galaxy Note 7 was unveiled on Tuesday and packs a 5.7-inch curved Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels, an Exynos 8890 Octa (Global) or Snapdragon 820 (US) processor, 4GB of RAM, a microSD slot for expandable storage, a 12MP rear-facing camera, a 5MP front-facing shooter, an iris scanner, an enhanced S Pen, IP68 waterproofing and a 3,500mAh non-removable Li-Po battery.

Themes on the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 support third-party icon packs

The Galaxy S6 and S6 edge were the first Android devices from Samsung to support third-party themes. Later, themes started supporting live wallpapers. Now, Samsung has added support for icon packs in themes with the Galaxy Note 7 along with a slightly revamped UI.

The themes section in the newly announced Galaxy Note 7 comes with three sections: wallpapers, themes, and icons. Users can now mix and match wallpapers, icons, and themes, which is a great addition to customizability since there were many beautiful themes in the Theme Store with poorly designed icons.

Support for icon packs was first revealed when Grace UX was leaked for the Galaxy Note 5. However, the Galaxy Note 7 is the first Samsung smartphone to support this feature out of the box. We don’t know whether this feature will be rolled out to existing devices such as the Galaxy S7, Galaxy Note 5, or the Galaxy S6.

Dual-SIM Galaxy Note 7 unboxing video surfaces online

Samsung’s latest flagship smartphone, the Galaxy Note 7, has gone on sale a little earlier than expected in Dubai. Lucky customer Victor, who operates a YouTube channel behind the handle Vic The Chick, strolled into an electronics store in The Dubai Mall on Wednesday morning, and was able to get his hands on a dual-SIM variant of the Note 7 for AED 2,999 ($815) with a 128GB microSD card thrown in for free.

Victor then took a seat in a library to record a brief unboxing of the Galaxy Note 7, during which he powers it on for the first time and explains a few of its new features, including IP68 water resistance, an enhanced S Pen, USB Type-C, an iris scanner and, as you’d expect from any unboxing, takes us on a detailed tour of the entire contents of the box.

Galaxy A4 receives Wi-Fi certification

We’ve known for a little over three months that Samsung is working on yet another addition to its Galaxy A lineup called the Galaxy A4. Sadly, details regarding the handset’s appearance and intended launch date have been non-existent, but it would now appear that it’s one step closer to hitting the shelves as five carrier-branded variants of the device — SM-A430FD, SM-A430L,SM-A430X, SM-A430S and SM-A430K — have been granted Wi-Fi certification, which is one of the final tests required to release a new smartphone.

Unfortunately, we don’t have much to go on with regards to specifications. All we know for certain is that the Galaxy A4 carries the model number SM-A430. A recent Zauba import listing points towards it sporting a 5.5-inch display and being priced somewhere in the region of INR 25,000 ($373) and INR 30,000 ($448). We also expect it to pack an in-house Exynos processor, 3GB of RAM, a 13MP rear-facing camera, a 5MP selfie shooter, a 3,000mAh non-removable battery and ship running the latest build of Marshmallow.

Samsung has a plethora of phones and tablets in its lineup and regularly releases firmware updates for various devices. These can include major updates, which bring a newer version of the OS to a particular device, or minor ones that improve performance and stability and fix bugs. Software updates for Samsung devices roll out in various regions every day, and you can find out which firmware updates were pushed out by the company over the last 24 hours through our firmware list.

As usual, you can download each of these firmware from our firmware section (simply enter your device’s model number to view all firmware for that device) in order to update to a new firmware manually, or as a means to return to your phone or tablet’s stock software.
