Galaxy Xcover 4 gets the February 2018 security patch update

Everyone’s going to be focusing on the Oreo update in the next couple of weeks, but it’s business as usual at Samsung as far as security patch updates are concerned. In line with its recent efforts to make budget and mid-range phones a priority for security updates, Samsung has rolled out an update with the February 2018 security patch to the Galaxy Xcover 4. The update has been released in Israel and comes with build number G390FXXU2ARA5.

Galaxy Xcover 4 February 2018 security patch update

If we don’t count Oreo for the Galaxy S8, the Xcover 4 is the first Samsung device to be updated with the latest security patch. The February 2018 patch fixes five critical vulnerabilities in the Android operating system, along with fixes for 16 possible exploits discovered in Samsung’s software. As usual, there are quite a few other vulnerabilities that have been patched, a list of which can be found on Samsung’s official website that documents security updates.

If you own a Galaxy Xcover 4, you can check if the update is available for your phone by going into the Settings » Software update menu. You can also use a PC to upgrade by downloading the full firmware from our database.

Official Galaxy S9 covers surface, confirm new styles

A Romanian retailer listed seemingly official Galaxy S9 covers a couple of days ago and the listings revealed two new cover styles that we’ve not seen Samsung offer before for the Galaxy S series. Now, images of the official Galaxy S9 covers have surfaced online and they confirm that the two new styles – Hyperknit and Protective Standing Cover – will indeed be offered.

These new images of Galaxy S9 covers reveal that the usual suspects will be offered as well. We’ve already told you what they’ll be called in our list of official Galaxy S9 covers posted two months ago. Samsung will offer the Clearview Standing Cover for the Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9+. This cover was originally planned for the ill-fated Galaxy Note 7 and was launched for the Galaxy S8 as well. The cover can be used to set up the device as an alarm clock on the nightstand or as a clock on a desk.

Samsung introduced the LED View Cover with the Galaxy S7 a couple of years ago and has offered it since for flagship handsets so it’s not surprising to see that it will be available for the Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9+ as well. The cover has a hidden LED display on the front which can show the time and notifications for calls, messages, battery level and alarm.

We exclusively reported last year that Samsung is going to launch a new cover with the Galaxy S8 fashioned out of Alcantara, a soft microfibre fabric which feels premium to the touch. The cover also has a built-in NFC chip. Samsung is bringing it back for the new flagship duo.

The Silicone Cover has long been available for Samsung handsets and it’s going to be launched for the upcoming devices as well. It provides a snug fit with a silky and soft-touch finish.

Hyperknit is one of the two new styles of Galaxy S9 covers. It’s a woven fabric with a characteristic texture that’s normally used for sports clothing. The cover’s box mentions that it’s a sporty and lightweight cover. Like the others, it will be available for both the Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9+.

Last but not the least, there’s the Protective Standing Cover which is already available for the Galaxy Note 8. It offers “ultimate device protection” with its MIL-STD-810G-516.7 certification. To pass this US military specification, the cover is tested against a subset of 10 specific conditions which include extreme temperatures, dust and vibration, drops from 4.9 feet and others. It also has a built-in kickstand for easy landscape viewing.

Samsung will also offer some other accessories for the Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9+ which it’s going to reveal at the event on February 25. Expect these Galaxy S9 covers to cost up to $60. Which one will you be getting for your Galaxy S9? Let us know in the comments below.
