Themes Thursday: 18 new themes this week, but hardly any are worth your attention

It’s Thursday, which means that it’s time for another exciting edition of our weekly Themes Thursday segment. This week, eighteen new themes found their way onto the Store. Unfortunately, they’re not all worth of your attention as, sadly, the majority are priced too high and are a bit over-the-top.

If I had to choose my favourite new theme in today’s column, it would be Red Hex. Although it’s priced at $1.99, the skin features a gorgeous set of hexagonal icons, mused with a unique Material Design-inspired backdrop that’s guaranteed to give your smartphone a whole new lease of life.

Check out four of the best new themes below:

Happy Chicken

Purple Light Butterfly

Red Hex

T-A Quiet Field

How to make a GIF using the S Pen on the Galaxy Note 8

Samsung has carried over the fantastic GIF-making functionality that debuted on the ill-fated Galaxy Note 7 over to the Galaxy Note 8, meaning you can continue—or start—turning just about anything into a GIF, which can then be shared to a social network of your choice, within a mere matter of seconds.

Why would you want to, I hear you ask? Well, as much as I hate to say it, GIFs have gradually become a staple of online communication—and if you aren’t using them now, chances are you will be within a few months, so we’ve put together this guide to prepare you for when you inevitably do.

How do I make a GIF on the Galaxy Note 8?

Step 1: When you’ve opened the application/video you want to turn into a GIF, detach the S Pen, then tap Smart Select.

Step 2: Choose Animation.

Step 3: Use the S Pen to specify the area you want to record.

Step 4: Hit Record.

Step 5: Once your GIF has finished recording, select either Save or Share—or Draw if you want to annotate it.

A couple of things to note

  • GIFs can be up to 15-seconds in length.
  • Some applications prevent you from turning content into GIFs, though it’s rare you’ll find one that does.

Stuck?

If you happen to encounter any issues while following our instructions, feel free to reach out to us in the comments section below and we’ll do our best to get you back on track. Otherwise, be sure to check out our other Galaxy Note 8 tips.

Check out these Galaxy Note 8 2x optical zoom camera samples

We have already put out our official Galaxy Note 8 review for our readers, and we have been impressed by what the Galaxy Note 8’s dual camera setup has to offer. Following DxOMark’s announcement yesterday that the Galaxy Note 8 is the “best smartphone for zoom”, we decided to put together a few samples of pictures we’ve captured using 2x optical zoom on the phone to see how it works in real-life scenarios. We’ve put the zoomed-in samples next to their standard counterparts so you can get an idea of what the optical zoom can offer.

For those who need a refresher, the Galaxy Note 8 comes with two 12-megapixel cameras at the back, one a standard 26mm wide-angle lens with f/1.7 aperture, Dual Pixel autofocus, and optical image stabilization (OIS), and the other a 52 mm telephoto lens with f/2.4 aperture and OIS. The telephoto lens is what makes these optical zoom shots possible, in addition to pictures with DSLR-like bokeh effects through the Live Focus feature, samples of which we had already published in a separate article a couple of weeks ago.

Well, without further ado, go ahead and check out the samples below, and let us know what you think! To view the 2x zoom shot, move the slider left, and move it right to see the regular version.

Android 7.0 Nougat update now arriving on the Galaxy J5 Prime in India

Samsung has at last started rolling out the Android 7.0 update for the Galaxy J5 Prime in India. In line with the release that reached the Galaxy On Nxt last month, this upgrade includes all of the features baked into Nougat, in addition to the firm’s Dual Messenger feature, which clones messaging applications—WhatsApp, for example—in a sandboxed environment, letting you sign into more than one account.

  • Android 7.0 Nougat
  • New UX (Samsung Experience)
  • Improved usability of Multi-Window
  • Improved usability of Notifications
  • Improved usability of Quick Settings
  • A new Dual Messenger function has been added

What does Android 7.0 Nougat bring to the table?

Unless you’ve been living under a (metaphorical) rock for the past year or so, chances are you’re familiar with all the new features included in Android 7.0 Nougat. Just in case you have though, here’s a quick refresher: enhanced notifications, stricter application permissions, additional emoji and refined battery saving tools. It also bundles a number of routine bug fixes, stability improvements and speed optimizations.

To check to see if the update is ready for your Galaxy J5 Prime, open up Settings, hit About Device, then select Download Updates Manually. Alternatively, you can wait until you receive a push notification prompting you to install the over-the-air update, though that typically takes a little longer to arrive and often won’t present itself unless your handset has at least 50 percent of battery.

Thanks, Ramesh!

Galaxy S8 market share is reportedly larger in Europe than Asia

The Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ have a combined market share of 8.2 percent in Switzerland, outpacing the 4.7 percent market share in the firm’s home country, South Korea, where adoption of its flagship smartphones has long prevailed, according to statistics released by AppBrain.

As can be seen in the table below, the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ are post popular in Switzerland, Australia, Norway, Sweden, the United States, United Kingdom and South Korea, respectively, followed by Denmark and Germany, with Egypt sitting at the bottom of the list.

It’s surprising that the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ only account for 4.7 percent of the market in South Korea, but there could be a simple explanation: it’s possible that a large number of owners upgraded to the Galaxy Note 8 as soon as it was released, resulting in the figures dropping.

Galaxy S7 is still the most-used Android smartphone in the US

Whatever the case may be, it’s nice to see Samsung gaining traction in the European market, though with a market share of 5.4 percent, the Galaxy S8 has a long way to go until it takes the crown for the most-used Android smartphone in the United States from the Galaxy S7.

Apple reportedly asked Samsung to push for legal action against Qualcomm in South Korea

According to a new report, Samsung may have been asked by Apple to pressure regulators in South Korea to ramp up their investigation into Qualcomm. The ultimate goal was apparently to get the chipmaker to reduce royalty payments, this according to documents filed by Qualcomm in court.

Bloomberg reports that a senior Apple executive, possibly CEO Tim Cook, had a word with a senior counterpart at an industry conference in Idaho two years ago. The Samsung executive was likely Lee Jae-yong, the recently incarcerated vice chairman of the conglomerate.

No Love Lost

There is no love lost between the two companies. Samsung and Apple have been involved in their own patent disputes for years. However, they also have a working relationship which sees Samsung supplying billions of dollars in parts to Apple. It’s also Apple’s ally in another patent dispute with Qualcomm.

Qualcomm’s court filing alleged that the Apple executive urged his Samsung counterpart to put pressure on antitrust regulators in Soth Korea to intensify an interrogation into Qualcomm that they had been conducting since 2014. “Get aggressive,” the Apple executive apparently said.

Qualcomm was ultimately hit with a $912.34 million fine in December 2016 by the Korea Fair Trade Commission and was also directed to improve how it handles patent licensing and chip sales. The company appealed the ruling but it was shot down by the Seoul High Court.

The allegation in Qualcomm’s filings that Apple got Samsung to use its influence with the government in South Korea to pressure regulators to go after Qualcomm is troubling. This was before Samsung found itself involved in an unrelated anticorruption probe that led to the ouster of former president Park Geun-hye and the incarceration of Lee Jae-yong.

“I don’t know what conversation they are talking about,” said Apple’s general counsel Bruce Sewell, adding that “For Apple to have said to Samsung, ‘You guys are in Korea and you should be watching this case carefully,’ doesn’t seem to me to be anything beyond simply the kind of conversation two CEOs might have.”

Samsung declined to comment. The KFTC said that the agency started its Qualcomm investigation on its own and that Samsung was “only one of the companies we enlisted for reference.”

Enterprise Edition variants of the Galaxy Note 8 and Galaxy S8 launched in Germany

Samsung is now offering Enterprise Edition variants of the Galaxy Note 8 and Galaxy S8 in Germany, but don’t get too excited: the made-for-business models don’t bring any new features—or internal upgrades—to the handsets.

The Enterprise Edition scheme does, however, provide participating companies with an extended three-year warranty, a three-year license for Knox Configure and monthly security maintenance updates for three years.

The changes the Enterprise Edition brings are software-based

Seeing as the changes the Enterprise Edition brings are software-based, the Galaxy Note 8 continues to sport an Exynos 8895 CPU and 6GB of RAM, while the Galaxy S8 still has an Exynos 8895 CPU and 4GB of RAM.

Those wanting to pick up an Enterprise Edition model of either the Galaxy Note 8 or Galaxy S8 will need to contact Tech Data Mobile, one of Europe’s leading distributors of mobility devices for businesses.
