Galaxy Tab S4 LTE starts receiving Android 10 update with One UI 2.1

Samsung has finally started rolling out the Android 10 update to the Galaxy Tab S4. The new software update is now rolling out to users in France, but it is currently limited to the LTE variant of the tablet. The Wi-Fi only variant of the Galaxy Tab S4 might get the update after a few weeks.

The new software update for the Galaxy Tab S4 LTE (SM-T835) comes with firmware version T835XXU4CTF5, and it brings One UI 2.1 to the tablet. The June 2020 security patch is also a part of the new update. Since this is a significant update, it will likely have a large file size, so we recommend using Wi-Fi to download the latest software build.

The Android 10 update brings improved Dark Mode, refreshed icons and colors, smoother animations, and Google’s full-screen navigation gestures to the Galaxy Tab S4. Other features include Digital Wellbeing, Music Share, Quick Share, Samsung Daily (replaces Bixby Home), and the newer Gallery app. The update also brings an improved layout in the camera app, better text over wallpapers, and a redesigned Device Care section.

Stock apps such as Calculator, Calendar, Contacts, My Files, Reminders, Samsung Internet, and Samsung Keyboard have received new features and design with the Android 10 update on the Galaxy Tab S4. The SmartThings panel has been replaced with Media and Devices in the Quick Settings area. Improved Accessibility features include a better high-contrast keyboard, large text layouts, and the ability to listen to live speech.

If you’re a Galaxy Tab S4 LTE user in France, you might have received the notification for the Android 10 update by now. If you haven’t received it already, you can check for the update manually by navigating to Settings » Software Update and tapping Download and install. Alternatively, you can download the full firmware from our firmware section and flash it manually.

Samsung shows a way to use drones and AI to maintain 5G towers

Samsung has found a new way to use drones and an AI-based solution to configure 4G and 5G antennas for network performance optimization. The company successfully demonstrated its new drone-based antenna configuration mechanism on one of its campuses. This solution will offer network operators an easier way to manage cell sites, optimize network performance, and improve employee safety.

A network engineer can use the new solution to stay on the ground and use a smartphone to operate a camera-equipped drone for capturing images and videos of 4G or 5G antennas. Such antennas are usually installed on towers or rooftops of tall buildings. The visual data can be sent to cloud servers within seconds, and deep learning can be used to instantly verify the azimuth, rotation, and tilt of the antennas to check if they’re in a correct position.

In Samsung’s demonstration, it took less than a minute for an engineer to transmit the visual data of the antennas to the cloud, process the results, and view results on-site in real-time on a smartphone screen. The whole process, including flying a drone, capturing visuals, processing data, and adjusting antennas, can be done within a span of fifteen minutes. In comparison, climbing a cell tower and doing all the tasks manually can take hours, and the process isn’t safe.

The South Korean firm also said that it is planning to add more technologies such as a way to allow engineers to remotely adjust an antenna’s angles using a PC or a smartphone for optimal position and higher performance. The drone-based and AI-backed solution demonstrated by Samsung shows how network operators can improve the safety of their employees as well as network performance.

Samsung said in a press release that its drone-based solution to audit network cell sites will launch later this year. The company provides end-to-end 4G and 5G solutions, including chipsets, radio, and core network equipment to telecom operators around the world. Its solutions include the delivery of 5G networks through both mid-band (2.5GHz/3.5GHz) and mmWave frequencies (28GHz/39GHz). It is already working with telecom firms in Japan, South Korea, and the US on 5G networks.

Samsung 5G Base Station Suwon South Korea

Sohyong Chong, VP and Head of Network Automation, Networks Business at Samsung Electronics, said, “As the number of 5G network sites grows, there has been a heightened focus on network performance by operators, and we are seeing an increased market demand for intelligent solutions for site maintenance. Once this solution launches globally later this year, it will offer a safer, more cost-effective and convenient way to satisfy market demands, leveraging our unique capabilities in combining the latest technologies—drones, AI and 5G.

Galaxy Chromebook deal grants you $100 discount or free Galaxy Buds

Samsung’s first-ever Galaxy-branded Chromebook was released in the USA a couple of months ago for $999, and while the original price remains intact on the company’s e-shop, Best Buy is now selling the Galaxy Chromebook at a $100 discount for a limited time. Buyers can get the Chromebook from Best Buy in Mercury Gray or Fiesta Red, and they can also benefit from $20 discounts on Office apps when picking up the notebook.

Don’t want the $100 discount? Get a free pair of Galaxy Buds instead

If you’d rather buy the Galaxy Chromebook directly from Samsung USA, fret not as the company has another offer in mind for you. The Galaxy Chromebook’s price remains unchanged at $999 in Samsung’s e-shop, however, buyers get a free pair of Galaxy Buds for a limited time when buying the stylish laptop. The Galaxy Buds are valued at $129.99 so this is technically a better offer than Best Buy’s, at least as long as you were in the market for a new pair of Buds to begin with. The wearable can be picked in one of four color options: black, gray, yellow, and white.

The Galaxy Chromebook is a fantastic device – especially on paper – and an ambitious one at that, having been equipped with a 4K Super AMOLED touchscreen and an S Pen. However, it’s not without its faults, and battery life is one of the biggest issues surrounding this device despite it being a Chromebook. Nevertheless, Samsung is not oblivious of this issue and the company confirmed last month that it is working on a fix.

As to what else you’ll be getting for your money, the Galaxy Chromebook features a 13.3-inch display, an Intel Core i5 10210U CPU, 8GB of RAM (although a 16GB variant could also be in development), 256GB of SSD storage, a fingerprint scanner, and a 6,390mAh battery. It Check the links below for more details on the ongoing offers from Samsung and Best Buy.

Samsung to build a P3 ‘total semiconductor factory’ in Pyeongtaek by 2021

It hasn’t been long since Samsung completed the construction of its P2 semiconductor plant in Pyeongtaek, but now, the company is preparing to build its 3rd ‘P3’ semiconductor factory in the same city in the Gyeonggi Province. According to reports from the local media, Samsung wants to start constructing the P3 plant in September and make it fully operational by the end of 2021.

The P3 plant will reportedly be 300 meters longer than the existing P2 plant, topping a total of 700 meters in length. Constructing the building itself should take roughly a year, and a few additional months will be needed to install the necessary equipment and ready it for mass production.

Samsung’s P3 plant could be a ‘total semiconductor factory’

Given the size of the P3 plant compared to the P2 factory, industry watchers speculate that Samsung might want to turn the P3 facility into a ‘total semiconductor factory’ capable of producing DRAM and NAND flash chips as well as system semiconductors including application processors and image sensors. The P3 plant will also reportedly be the place where future manufacturing processes will debut before they’ll be adopted by Samsung’s other manufacturing facilities.

Samsung is the largest DRAM and NAND flash manufacturer in the world and it dominated the smartphone memory market all throughout 2019. It manufactures semiconductor solutions for its own products as well as for numerous major clients. Demand for newer memory technologies is likely to increase and the company wants to keep the momentum going. If the reports turn out to be accurate, its giant P3 plant in Pyeongtaek could be a key component for the company to maintain its leading role in the segment.

Samsung expands Galaxy S20+ color palette in Hungary, adds 3 flavors

Samsung has quietly added three new color options to the Galaxy S20+ palette in Hungary, with customers now having the option to pick from Aura Blue, Aura Red, and Cloud White in addition to the three existing color options: Cosmic Gray, Cosmic Black, and Cloud Blue. Mind you, these flavors have been released in other countries prior to Hungary so they’re not exclusive to this market, but nonetheless, they are more difficult to come by compared to the standard colors on account of their slow/later release.

The Galaxy S20+ in Hungary is offered by Samsung in both LTE and 5G flavors. The former is sold unlocked by Samsung and partner retailers, while the 5G variant is offered in collaboration with domestic mobile carriers. The new Cloud White, Aura Blue, and Aura Red color options are now available only for the LTE Galaxy S20+ and, as yet, there’s no telling whether the 5G variant will be getting the same treatment at any point in the future.

Same as before, the standard Galaxy S20 can only be purchased in Cosmic Gray, Cloud Blue, and Cloud Pink in Hungary and only in LTE flavor, whereas the Galaxy S20 Ultra is available only with 5G connectivity in Cosmic Gray and Cosmic Black. Check the links below for more details if you don’t own a Galaxy S20 model but you’re considering buying a Galaxy S20+ in one of  the newer color options added to Samsung’s e-shop in Hungary.

Galaxy M31s to boast a 6,000mAh battery, according to new documents

About a month ago, SamMobile exclusively confirmed that the Galaxy M31s is in development with 128GB of storage. Now it looks like Samsung is starting to address the necessary formalities ahead of the smartphone’s release and has passed the phone’s battery to TUV Rheinland for certification.

The certified battery carries model number EB-BM317ABY. It corresponds to the Galaxy M31s’ own model number – ‘SM-M317F‘ – and the battery has a capacity of 6,000mAh. This shouldn’t come as a surprise to a lot of SamMobile readers and Galaxy fans, seeing how the standard Galaxy M31 features a 6,000mAh battery with 15W fast charging.

Exynos 9611, 6GB of RAM, a 64MP main camera and Android 10 in tow

No other specs have been revealed by the TUV Rheinland certificate but previous rumors indicate that the Galaxy M31s could boast a quad-camera setup, and like the Galaxy M31, the main module will have a resolution of 64-megapixels. The Galaxy M31s was also spotted at Geekbench a little under two weeks ago. According to the benchmark, the phone features an Exynos 9611 chipset, 6GB of RAM, and to nobody’s surprise, it runs Android 10 out of the box.

As to when exactly the Galaxy M31s will be released, it’s difficult to tell, but an educated guess based on the launch schedule of the Galaxy M30, Galaxy M30s, and Galaxy M31 is that the Galaxy M31s could be unveiled in August-September and be released a month or so later. We’ll keep you posted.

Samsung Capture update adds new Screen Write & Recorder features

Samsung Capture got a new update to version 4.1.04.9 over the weekend. The update’s changelog claims to add new features to various components of Samsung Capture including the Recording Toolbar and Screen Write features.

The Recording Toolbar for Screen Recorder works much like it did before, however, the new version aims to streamline the user experience with the inclusion of new Play/Pause/Stop buttons in the toolbar. As you’ll be able to tell from our previous Screen Recorder tutorial, these functions had already existed prior to this update but the buttons have now been rearranged. There’s also a new Skip Countdown button that you can press when you start a screen recording, and the app now allows users to screen-record during a call, sans voice. To help users organize their recordings with more ease, the name of the longest-recorded app will be added to the file’s name.

Screen Write was also updated with this new release. Although Screen Write is part of the S Pen suite of apps, it is technically a component of Samsung Capture. The latest update added the ability to adjust the size of your screenshots by dragging its corners just like you would when editing a photo in the Gallery. You can download the latest Samsung Capture update by launching the Galaxy Store and checking the Updates section.

BTS-themed Galaxy S20+ coming to the UAE with Galaxy Buds+ discount

The very special, BTS-themed variant of the Galaxy S20+ 5G is coming to the Arabian Peninsula, starting with the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait. Pre-orders in the two countries are already live as of today and can be placed directly with Samsung Gulf. As a loyalty bonus, anyone who orders the Android flagship will receive a 50% discount on a matching pair of Galaxy Buds+, as well as a complimentary wireless charger in a perfectly matching color the company refers to as “B. Purple”.

As is the case in other markets where pre-orders already started earlier this month, this special edition of the Galaxy S20+ 5G is only available with 128GB of storage space. It’s priced at 3,999 dirhams in the UAE, which amounts to about $1,090 and is in line with how much it costs in most other parts of the world. Trading in your old device can net you up to 2,700 dirhams ($735) in savings, courtesy of Samsung’s trade-in program.

Up to 100% off on the Galaxy Buds+ BTS Edition

The official name of this limited smartphone series is a mouthful, as Samsung called it the Galaxy S20+ 5G BTS Edition. Furthermore, the accompanying Galaxy Buds+ BTS Edition series is presently being bundled with every Galaxy S20-series purchase in the UAE except for the B. Purple one. Fans of the world’s biggest boy band who buy the latter will still be eligible for a 50% discount on the purple wireless earbuds, though they might have to reach out to customer support in order to get one, Samsung wrote on its website.

The K-pop phenomenon has already been helping Samsung for a while now, so it’s to be expected collaborations similar to the BTS one will follow in the near future.

Is the outrage over ads in Samsung Music and Weather justified?

There has been outrage recently over ads that users in a few markets have seen inside apps like Samsung Music and Weather. It follows rumors about Samsung potentially opting for lockscreen ads in One UI 2.5 As we’ve discussed before, it seems unlikely that Samsung will put ads on the lockscreen in One UI 2.5.

That being said, these users have been quite vocal in expressing their displeasure over the ads. You can see where they’re coming from. If you paid over $1,000 for a phone, you wouldn’t want it to show you any ads.

Are these Samsung Music and Weather ads really ads?

This ad for SiriusXM, a satellite radio service in the US, was shown to users inside Samsung Music. On the surface, it might seem like Samsung sold in-app pop-up ads to this company but dig a little deeper and you’ll find that this is actually a promotion that Samsung is offering with SiriusXM. If you buy the Galaxy Buds, you will get a 3-month free trial of the SiriusXM Premier service. Only users in the United States saw this ad because this promotion was meant only for them.

Does this qualify as an “ad” in the traditional sense? It would if Samsung had opened up access to ad networks which meant that you could be shown targeted ads in its apps. For example, if you had been searching for sunglasses online, you’d end up seeing ads for sunglasses in the app as well.

In this instance, Samsung is only promoting its own products and partnerships through its app. It’s far from the only company that does that. Apple displays similar promotions through its apps on the iPhone as well. It would be far more troubling if Samsung were to allow ad networks to target its customers directly. That might be a concern that some users have after seeing these promotions but it’s difficult to imagine Samsung allowing third-party advertisers into its apps.

The banner ad that was shown inside the native Weather app in South Korea also appeared to be part of a promotion with the company that provides weather data to Samsung in the country. Such promotions have previously been run through apps like Samsung Pay as well. Samsung also routinely promotes is own health and fitness products through Samsung Health.

None of this is new which is why one has to wonder if all of this outrage is justified? An argument can be made that once a product has been purchased by customers, they shouldn’t have to view the manufacturer’s own ads or promotions. Then again, companies actively focus on extracting more business from existing customers as that’s cheaper than having to acquire new customers. What would you do if you were running a company that had the same option available?

Samsung reveals South Korean pricing for Odyssey G9 gaming monitor

Samsung had unveiled its new Odyssey gaming monitor lineup at CES 2020 earlier this year. The Odyssey G7 was launched in South Korea earlier this month. Now, the company has revealed the pricing of the 49-inch Odyssey G9 gaming monitor for its home market.

The Odyssey G9 is now listed on Samsung’s website for South Korea, along with its pricing. The curved gaming monitor is priced at KRW 1,960,000 (around $1,610), and it comes with JBL’s Quantum Duo stereo speakers during the pre-order phase. The monitor’s pricing in the South Korean market is similar to its price in the US.

Samsung’s new gaming monitor has a 49-inch curved screen with an ultrawide aspect ratio (32:9) and dual-QHD resolution (5,120 x 1,440 pixels). It has a QLED display panel with DisplayHDR 1000 (1,000 nits brightness), 240Hz refresh rate, 1ms response time, 2500:1 contrast ratio, and a 1000R curvature. It also features AMD FreeSync 2 and Nvidia G-Sync for tear-free gaming.

At the rear, the Odyssey G9 has an Infinity Core Lighting area, which can be customized to display any color. The monitor’s stand has height, swivel, and tilt adjustments as well. In terms of I/O, the gaming monitor features one HDMI port, two DisplayPort inputs, a 2-port USB 3.0 hub, and a 3.5mm audio output jack.

Other features of the new gaming monitor include a picture-in-picture mode, Eye Saver mode, Virtual Aim Point, and Black Equalizer. The company had announced its partnership with the T1 e-sports team last month for marketing the Odyssey gaming monitor lineup.

Samsung’s smart factory tech remains key in global coronavirus fight

Samsung is once again expanding its contributions to the global fight against the novel coronavirus strain, having most recently focused on better supporting mask manufacturers. More specifically, it shared its smart factory tech and practices with Polish producer PTAK, consequently tripling its daily output to nearly 70,000 masks, according to its own estimates. This achievement comes only three months after the company announced a similar manufacture initiative in its home country, which itself is an extension of the push toward intelligent automation it started in partnership with the Korean government two years ago.

The said program helped hundreds of Korean manufacturers improve their volume production output by over 50% on average. Scaling mask manufacture proved to be a key first step in “flattening the curve” during the original outbreak. Much like the engineering innovations it’s sharing with non-affiliated firms free of charge, the overall idea of Samsung’s war on COVID-19 is to keep fighting smarter, not harder.

$2 billion in relief efforts and counting

Samsung’s latest sustainability report saw the company officially pledge to defeat COVID-19 through a multitude of endeavors spanning nearly every industry imaginable. From improving volume production of established PPE producers and repurposing its own manufacturing lines to helping trial vaccines and educate the population on best health practices, Samsung already committed about $2 billion to a range of coronavirus relief efforts, as per the aforementioned report. Naturally, that figure includes direct donations to NGOs and health organizations, of which there have been many so far.

Samsung’s top engineering talent is likely to continue supporting manufacturers of all kinds in the coming months, especially as most of the world is now relaxing social distancing measures, thus expecting a second wave of infections by late summer.

Galaxy Watch 3 pictures leak again, this time with the display turned on

The Galaxy Watch 3 is expected to be unveiled sometime next month, but most of its features have been leaked. We had exclusively leaked its specifications last week and then the live images of the smartwatch were revealed just one day later, thanks to NRRA certification. Now, more images of the Galaxy Watch 3 have been leaked, and this time, the display is turned on.

The Galaxy Watch 3’s app launcher and Settings menu are visible in the leaked image. All the usual Samsung stock apps seem to be are present on the device. If you can notice, the app icons for Calendar and Galaxy Store apps seem to have a slightly different design and color. This points towards a newer version of Tizen OS that could be unveiled alongside the upcoming smartwatch. The Galaxy Watch 3 also has a physical rotating bezel and two buttons on the right side.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 Software UI Tizen

As we reported earlier, the Galaxy Watch 3 will come in two different sizes: 41mm and 45mm. The 41mm version will have a 1.2-inch screen, while the 45mm version will have a 1.4-inch screen. Both variants will have Gorilla Glass DX protection, IP68 certification, and an MIL-STD-810G compliant design. The watch will have 1GB RAM and 8GB storage. It will run Tizen OS 5.5, and feature Bluetooth 5.0 and Wi-Fi.

Other features of the Galaxy Watch 3 include an accelerometer, heart-rate monitor, ECG, blood pressure monitoring, and sleep tracking. The 41mm version of the smartwatch will be powered by a 247mAh battery, while a 340mAh battery will power the 45mm variant. The watch will be available in stainless steel and titanium finishes.

[Update: Now stable] Latest Samsung Internet beta brings a couple of improvements

Samsung Internet is arguably one of the most feature-packed browsers and the company does a good job of regularly rolling out new features as well. It operates a beta program for the browser so that users who want to test new features before they’re released to the public can do so.

To that end, the company today released a new version of Samsung Internet beta which brings a couple of improvements to the browser. The latest beta is out now and available for download.

New Samsung Internet beta is rolling out

As per the changelog, Samsung Internet beta v12.0.14 gives the browser the ability to open links in Secret Mode from within the context menu. It also makes it possible for more password manager apps to autofill login credentials. Last but not the least, it upgrades the Chromium web engine to v79. The latest version can be downloaded from Google Play, though it seems it’s a staged rollout so you may not immediately be able to download the update and might have to check later.

If the beta is not your cup of tea, consider trying out the stable version of Samsung Internet if you haven’t already, it received a substantial update last week. Samsung added a robust new privacy feature to protect users against Back button hijacking. It’s a tactic usually employed by shady sites on the Internet whereby when the user presses the back button, they’re redirected to some other website instead of being able to access the previous page.

The improvements that are part and parcel of today’s beta release should eventually make their way to the stable version as well.

Update: All of the features mentioned above are now available in the stable non-beta Samsung Internet app. You can download it from the Google Play Store and also from our APK archive.

More than 100 brands now support Samsung-led HDR10+ standard

Samsung co-developed the HDR10+ standard with 20th Century Fox and Panasonic a few years ago to compete with Dolby Vision. The South Korean firm has now announced that more than 100 brands have adopted HDR10+ in their products, ranging from smartphones and tablets to TVs and AV receivers.

HDR10+ a technology that optimizes brightness and contrast of a video on a frame-by-frame or a scene-by-scene basis, and improves colors and the overall image quality. It is better than HDR10 because it can dynamically change high dynamic range metadata. It’s an open-source and royalty-free standard, unlike Dolby Vision.

HDR10+ Technology LLC was established in collaboration with 20th Century Fox and Panasonic in 2018 to expand the HDR10+ ecosystem. The firm is committed to operate and support HDR10+ certification and logo programs to compatible devices. Currently, 103 brands, including 16 display and TV makers, 21 SoC brands, 20 content producers, 32 software firms, and 14 peripheral manufacturers support HDR10+.

Some of the well-known brands that support HDR10+ with the content, displays, hardware, and software include Amazon, Amlogic, ARM, DTS, Blackmagic, Blackshark, Broadcom, HiSense, JVC Kenwood, OnePlus, Onkyo, OPPO, Philips, Qualcomm, Realme, TCL, Toshiba, Universal Pictures, Vivo, Vizio, and Warner Bros. Over 1,000 products are now certified for HDR10+ content playback.

Choi Yong-hoon, VP of Development at Samsung Electronics’ Video Display Division, said, “In just two years since we started our certification program, we have surpassed 100 member companies, and HDR10+ is an integral part of the UHD implementation, and we will continue to expand the HDR10+ ecosystem and strengthen the high-definition standard technology initiative.
