Samsung releases ‘Untact’, an 8K movie shot using Galaxy S20, Galaxy Note 20 devices

Samsung had announced last month that it will release an 8K movie that is filmed almost entirely using its flagship Galaxy smartphones. Now, the movie has been released in South Korea, and people can go watch it in two cinema halls (Yeonnam-dong and Seongsung-dong) in Seoul. The movie will be played on Samsung’s 8K QLED TVs in the cinema.

Untact, the 8K movie shot using the Galaxy S20 and the Galaxy Note 20 smartphones, is directed by Kim Jee-Woon, who has also made popular movies like “The Good, The Bad, The Weird” (2008) and the Hollywood action thriller “The Last Stand” (2013). The romantic movie Untact stars lead actors Kim Go-Eun and Kim Ju-Hun.

The movie will be played in the cinemas until October 25. However, only a small group of people can watch the movie at once as the 8K theatres use a reservation system to reduce human contact and to reduce the chances of contracting the COVID-19 infection. Untact will later be released in 1080p resolution first and then in 8K resolution on Samsung’s YouTube channel.

Samsung will showcase its lifestyle AV products, including 8K QLED TVs, The Frame, and The Premiere lineup of 4K Ultra Short Throw laser projectors. Visitors can also experience the South Korean tech giant’s latest flagship smartphones, including the Galaxy Z Fold 2 and the Galaxy Z Flip 5G.

Good Lock Home Up module update improves the file sharing experience

Samsung’s Good Lock module Home Up was recently updated to include new customization options for the share file pop-up menu. The new update to Home Up essentially adds a Share Manager that lets you customize the pop-up list containing possible sharing options.

As most Galaxy smartphone users know, the standard One UI sharing menu offers a handful of options for sharing selected files via Nearby Share or over the web with the most recent/popular contacts from the Direct Share section. The menu also contains a list of all apps through which you can share selected files but it lacks any customization options. Home Up flips the script by giving uses the option to personalize the list through the recent Share Manager feature.

The new Share Manager lets you disable the Nearby Share shortcut and sharing data details. There’s also an option to customize Direct Share, either by removing this section from the sharing menu entirely or by adding the contacts of your choosing to the Direct Share list.

Another highlight to this update is the new option for customizing the list of apps in depth. It lets you remove certain elements of an app; for example you can have Facebook News Feed as an option for sharing while disabling Facebook Your Story from the list.

Home Up is a Good Lock module that was released half a year ago, meaning it doesn’t work independently without Good Lock. It’s not available everywhere but Samsung is expanding the availability of Good Lock to more countries. You can grab the latest version of Home Up from the Galaxy Store where it’s listed, or you can download it from our APK archive.

October 2020 security update lands on the Galaxy Note 10 Lite in Europe

Samsung is bringing the October 2020 security patch to the Galaxy Note 10 Lite with a new firmware update that’s rolling out now in Europe. No, not the base Galaxy Note 20 model which could be a Lite model in its own right, but the actual Galaxy Note 10 Lite which was released in January and arguably fell into obscurity months later.

The latest firmware update including the October 2020 security patch is now available for the Galaxy Note 10 Lite in Spain. It doesn’t seem to be available elsewhere at present but as always, the update’s reaches will expand into additional markets sooner rather than later. Interestingly enough, the update is being rolled out in Spain where the Galaxy Note 10 Lite also got a head start with the One UI 2.5 firmware update last month.

The latest firmware for the Galaxy Note 10 Lite carries version N770FXXU6CTJ2 but at the time of writing we were unable to confirm if the package includes any new features. Nevertheless, the October 2020 security patch was detailed by Samsung last week and it’s a most-welcomed addition. The patch addresses 21 vulnerabilities found in Samsung’s software, one of which could be exploited to gain unauthorized access to content on the SD card and Secure Folder.

If you use the Galaxy Note 10 Lite in Spain, you should be able to download the latest firmware by tapping the update notification once it arrives or by opening Settings on the phone, accessing Software update and tapping Download and install. As always, you can also download the firmware from our website and install it on your phone using a Windows PC. Lastly, you can check our firmware archive for availability in other markets.

Samsung Display is supplying OLED panels for 3/4 iPhone 12 models

A rumor began making the rounds nearly half a year ago about Samsung Display potentially inking a contract with Apple to become the company’s main display supplier for the 2020 series of iPhones. True enough, the iPhone 12 series was unveiled earlier this week and, according to a fresh report, nearly every model in the lineup uses OLED panels supplied by Samsung Display.

Specifically, Samsung Display is supplying Apple with OLED panels for the 5.4-inch iPhone Mini, the 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Pro, and the 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max. Meanwhile, the 6.1-inch OLED panels for the standard iPhone 12 will reportedly be supplied by LG Display, while China’s BOE was left out of the picture entirely.

BOE had the opportunity of becoming an Apple display supplier for the iPhone 12 series when the Cupertino tech company was looking to diversify its component supply chain late last year. The Chinese display maker was becoming a threat to Samsung Display’s business, however, Apple ultimately decided against acquiring OLED panels from BOE at some point during the the first half of the year.

Samsung Display might be looking at a 20% increase in OLED orders

According to the industry, Apple is likely to manufacture roughly 70 million iPhone 12 units by the end of the year. Samsung and LG could be supplying a total of 80 million panels combined, of which 60 million will be manufactured solely by Samsung Display.

Samsung was Apple’s main display supplier for last year’s iPhone series as well. The Korean tech giant manufactured 50 million panels for the iPhone 11, so if  the figures above turn out to be accurate then Samsung Display is looking at an increase in sales of 20% compared to last year.

As for next year, market watchers expect Apple to ship a total of around 220 million iPhone units. This could mean that Samsung Display might be manufacturing roughly 170 million iPhone 12 OLED panels in 2020.

Galaxy S21 may be the cheapest flagship in years but not for you

The Galaxy S21 range is likely to become the cheapest flagship lineup in years – at least in terms of production costs. Meaning don’t get too excited for now. Korean sources close to Samsung’s supply chain report the company recently negotiated some pretty steep price cuts on a number of key components for the next generation of the Galaxy S family.

Those newly discounted parts include RF components from Samsung’s wireless business, as well as screen modules from its display arm. Both agreed to high single-digit price cuts in the ballpark of 8-9%, which is about double the usual level when sales are as weak as they were this year. Though even weak sales can be good for business, provided it’s large enough to care about optimizing profit margins. Because these concessions are possibly at the heart of another, surprisingly decent set of quarterly financials that Samsung is scheduled to detail in a few days, having already published an official guidance for Q3 2020.

Even weak sales can be good for (a sufficiently large) bussiness

It’s currently unclear whether any third-party suppliers also conceded to comparable price cuts. But today’s report suggests the prices of high-end smartphone components may drop once again before the end of the year. Which is Galaxy S21 territory, though given the strong profitability focus Samsung had in recent years, don’t expect it to pass on these savings to consumers.

Of course, the one supplier we can be pretty sure won’t entertain any talks of price cuts is also the one responsible for the most expensive component of (some of) Samsung’s flagships – Qualcomm. Because while the average business prices its products based on supply and demand, Qualcomm doesn’t really have a lot to worry about on the supply side, so its prices are pretty much dictated by its goodwill and antitrust lawsuits, so – mostly antitrust lawsuits.

Yet all things considered, the Galaxy S21 Ultra, S30 Ultra, or however Samsung’s next ultra-premium flagship ends up being called, should at the very least be somewhat cheaper to produce than the Galaxy S20 Ultra was.

Galaxy S21 getting rushed, may even launch this year: report

Samsung is fast-tracking Galaxy S21 production in a quite unprecedented manner and may even be ready to announce it before the end of the year, according to a new report out of the company’s home country. Insiders from the tech giant’s supply chain claim many key Galaxy S21 components will enter mass production next month, which is about six weeks earlier than usual. An earlier-than-anticipated product announcement is by far the most logical reason for the change.

After all, it’s not like Samsung has to fear a shortage of components, especially given how much the mobile industry suffered throughout this year. Yet that is precisely the point, Korean sources argue.

Early bird gets the Galaxy S21 – or the other way around

Namely, following a rather poor commercial showing from the company’s 2020 flagships, Samsung may be looking to revive some of its momentum by beating the competition to the market by an even larger stretch than usual, as per the same report. Then again, that was also the reasoning applied to the Galaxy S20 Fan Edition’s very existence.

The only problem with that theory is that Samsung can’t magically conjure up the brains of its next-gen Android flagships. Namely, there is no indication that Qualcomm will begin mass-manufacturing the Snapdragon 875 any earlier than it usually would.

Of course, samples of the chip should already be in the hands of pretty much every major OEM out there by now. So, that technically doesn’t stop Samsung from announcing the Galaxy S21 in December. Yet it’s unlikely the company will be able to release its next high-end smartphone family much earlier than it usually does, i.e. March. And even in a next-to-impossible scenario in which it ends up relying entirely on its Exynos silicon, there are thankfully no reports suggesting the successor to the underwhelming Exynos 990 is being fast-tracked in a similar fashion.

Samsung Australia partners with Eftpos for Samsung Pay

Samsung Pay has now gone live across the Eftpos network in Australia. Samsung partnered with Eftpos for contactless and tokenized transactions via Samsung Pay. The new solution offers users more choice for making mobile payments. They can choose between making debit card payments via the Eftpos network or Visa.

Heritage Bank is the first issuer in the country to offer the new Samsung Pay feature, but more banks and issuers are expected to join soon. Over time, more Australian users can pay using their Eftpos cards on Samsung Pay. Users can make their choice by using a toggle inside the Samsung Pay app on their smartphones. Recently, the South Korean firm had launched a new Samsung Pay feature in Australia that allowed customers to make high-value purchases without a PIN.

Mark Hodgson, head of services at Samsung Australia, said, “Samsung puts customer experience at the centre of everything we do and, through our partnership with Eftpos, we are providing Australian customers with more choice and control over their contactless payment transactions. We are proud to launch with Eftpos and Heritage Bank. This collaboration is a great example for how service providers can bring their best innovation together and deliver breakthrough experiences for Australians.

Users have been increasingly preferring contactless mobile payment solutions, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic and the fear of contracting the virus by touching infected surfaces. Eftpos CEO Stephen Benton expects that the contactless payments trend to slow down anytime soon.
