Samsung’s latest Gear VR experience lets you ride with Santa

The holidays are a lucrative time of the year for gadget sales particularly which is why you see companies launch all sorts of elaborate marketing campaigns to try and get customers to buy their products. Samsung is no different. The company’s latest marketing effort is a virtual reality experience it has created for the holidays. It takes Gear VR owners on a ride with the man himself, Santa.

Titled “The Night Before,” this VR experience starts off with the viewer inside Santa’s sleigh. There are plenty of elves around rushing to load up the sleigh with gifts before Santa takes off in the most spectacular fashion. The VR experience takes viewers on a ride across the globe so it’s certainly going to be fun to watch. To experience it in the manner intended, you will need a Samsung Gear VR headset, but if you don’t have one you can watch the 360-degree video on YouTube, the only caveat being that it’s a little warped.

Those who are in Los Angeles or New York City can also check out the full VR experience at The Grove in LA and Herald Square Park in NYC.

Optus testing Nougat for the Galaxy A5 (2016)

Samsung recently confirmed the Nougat update for the Galaxy A5 (2016) along with a bunch of other A series handsets. Australian carrier Optus has now begun testing the said update, with the commercial rollout expected to begin by the end of January. The phone is currently running Android 6.0.1.

Going by this revelation, it’s possible that the rest of the world will also see the update around the same time, although nothing can be confirmed at this point.

The Galaxy A5 received a security update to patch to what was considered a “critical flaw” not too long ago. While the company didn’t publicly announce what the critical flaw was, it was relieving for the customers to know that it was fixed for good.

Themes Thursday: Three best themes from this week

We’re back with this week’s Themes Thursday! We’re just days away from Christmas and new year’s eve, and we suggested some brilliant Christmas-related theme packs last week. This week, we’ve shortlisted three new paid themes, and we think that you should check them out.

The Alpaca and the Outline Light themes look good, and they have minimalistic designs. The Fantasy Technology (Live) is quite brilliant, and it looks futuristic, thanks to all those tron-esque neon borders. Moreover, plenty of new year theme packs have been released this week in the Theme Store. Which theme did you like from this week?

Samsung Galaxy J7 (2017) shown off in 360-degree video and renderings

The Galaxy J7 (2017) has been part of the leaks for quite some time now. We recently saw the handset getting WiFi certification with Android 7.0 Nougat on board. Thanks to @OnLeaks, we’re now getting a very good look of the handset in the form of 3D renderings and a 360-degree video.

Much like its predecessor, the 2017 variant of the Galaxy J7 should be sporting a premium design with a metal body. Going by this leak, it seems like Samsung has retained most of the hardware features as well, while bumping up some aspects.

As you can see, there’s a small speaker grille right above the power button. Samsung introduced this with the Galaxy J7 Prime, so it isn’t a first for the company. The display is said to be 5.5-inches again (Super AMOLED), although the resolution has been bumped to 1080p.

The Galaxy J7 (2017) with the model number SM-J727V has already appeared on Indian import listing site Zauba, with an estimated price tag of Rs 13,686 ($201). The handset has been certified by Bluetooth SIG as well, so it’s only a matter of time before the handset is unveiled by Samsung.

Samsung updates its Internet client for the Gear VR to make browsing more immersive

Following a successful beta test, Samsung has today released a new update for its Internet client for the Gear VR. The upgrade, which is making its way to compatible units in stages, brings a number of new features to the application to give users greater control and a more immersive browsing experience, including compatibility for WebVR v1.0: an experimental JavaScript API that provides the browser with access to the device’s VR features.

The South Korean company has also introduced a new Change Background Function; permitting users to customize the backdrop of their VR space with premium images (at present, it looks like there’s only eight, but more will be added over time) provided by cloud graphics company OTOY. Samsung hopes that the vivid interchangeable scenes will add depth to users’ browsing, “transporting them to a vibrant and realistic world that’s ripe for exploration.”

samsunginternet_gear-vr_main_2

For those who’ve never tried it before, Samsung Internet for Gear VR allows users to surf the web and enjoy photos and videos on a large, virtual screen — just as if they were looking at their favorite website on a giant theater screen. Once a user connects their Gear VR to a smartphone with any web page or full-screen video open in Samsung Internet for Android, they can freely and continuously stream content in 360-degrees.
