Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ review roundup

Samsung officially unveiled its latest flagship smartphones, the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8+, last month. They’ve been available for preorder for a while now, and these smartphones will go on sale tomorrow in a majority of important markets around the world. If you’re thinking of spending your hard-earned money on any one of them, you might want to know if they’re well worth it.

We published our comprehensive, in-depth review of the Galaxy S8 and S8+ yesterday (along with a video review), and so did a lot of other experts. We thought it would only be fair to gather the best Galaxy S8 reviews from some of the most respected publications around the world so that you can easily decide whether or not to spend your money on these new smartphones.

With the S8, Samsung has made an Android phone more desirable than an iPhone. For all its faults, for all the ways Samsung could spend less time and money on gimmicks and more on on-going software support, for all the cheaper options out there, there’s no other phone I’d rather have with me. It’s simply irresistible. [Read More]

The best-looking phone around crushes it in performance, battery life, water-resistance and wireless charging. An external storage slot lets you keep more photos, videos and music.  Its awkwardly placed fingerprint reader leads to camera smears and longer unlock times, which is aggravating when you use it to unlock your phone dozens of times a day. For the most part, Samsung’s Galaxy S8 is a slam dunk. It’s brilliantly designed, brimming with horsepower and has a beautiful screen. That’s all most people will need, and our gripes are minor. It’s too bad Bixby is still incomplete — its voice interface doesn’t work yet, and the stuff we did get can be hit-or-miss. Fortunately, Bixby is strictly optional, and the rest of the phone is remarkably polished. Long story short, if you’re looking for a new phone, this should be at the top of your list. [Read More]

GSMArena

The Galaxy S8+ is one gorgeous piece of tech with its Infinity display and no amount of black bars can take that away from it. Plus, it’s not like having bezels in their place will do your videos any good.

The camera is barely an upgrade over the Galaxy S7 for your good light or video shooting, but the new image-stacking tech delivers a notable boost in the camera’s weakest area – low light photography. And the front camera got such a major update that it might be enough of an incentive on its own for selfie fans to upgrade.

The chipset is the fastest around, while the software is more polished than ever. And while the battery capacity hasn’t been increased over the S7 edge, the endurance is improved when it comes to web browsing and video watching. [Read More]

SamMobile Daily Recap: April 19, 2017 — Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+ and more!

Samsung starts rolling out Android 7.0 to Galaxy S6 and S6 edge in India

We had reported last week that Samsung could soon roll out Android 7.0 to the Galaxy S6 (SM-G920I) and the Galaxy S6 edge (SM-G925I) in India, and the company has done just that today. The update, which has a file size of 1247.36MB, brings Android 7.0 to the devices along with April 2017 security patch.

The Nougat update brings a newer UI design, improved notifications and quick setting toggles, better multi-window system, and Game Launcher to the smartphones. Samsung claims that the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge should also offer improved performance with this update. Users should also see faster system upgrades as well as app installation.

If you’re from India, have you received the Nougat update on your Galaxy S6 or S6 edge yet?

Why Galaxy S7 edge users don’t need to upgrade to the Galaxy S8 or S8+

The Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ will be released in just a couple of days, which means that those of you who have been planning to buy this handset will probably be heading to your local retailers and carriers to pick one up. You have all the reasons in the world to upgrade to the Galaxy S8 from the Galaxy S6, but what if you own the Galaxy S7 edge? An argument can be made that you don’t really need to upgrade right now.

We were really impressed by the Galaxy S7 edge, so much so that the title of our detailed Galaxy S7 edge review was “Something great becomes even better!.” Here’s an excerpt from the review which will help you understand our feelings about this particular handset: “Perfection is the word that is applicable here, as the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge come with a spec sheet that has every major feature on it.”

If you’ve already read our Galaxy S8 review you will be aware that our take on the new flagship is that Samsung has brought us the future, but it’s not quite perfect yet. This doesn’t take away from the fact that the Galaxy S8 is a great smartphone, but we do have gripes with the weird placement of the fingerprint sensor and Bixby button as well as the fact that a smartphone which costs 800 Euro doesn’t even offer a screen time of at least four hours (well, the S8+ does, but not very easily, especially on mobile data).

Also ReadSamsung Galaxy S7 edge long-term review: Still the best Android phone

I think it comes down to what you’re looking to get out of your smartphone. Yes, there are significant differences between the Galaxy S7 edge and the Galaxy S8 when it comes to design. The latter has a gorgeous Infinity Display with minimal bezels and looks more stylish. It’s a natural evolution of the design that Samsung perfected with the Galaxy S7 edge. The question is, though, is that enough to warrant an upgrade?

It’s not that the Galaxy S8 has an advantage in terms of software. It may ship with Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box but the latest Android OS update has long been available for the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge. You might say that the Galaxy S8 has Bixby but you and I both know that Bixby is essentially useless right now, not to mention the fact that it won’t even be ready at launch.

One of the big reasons why people upgrade their smartphones these days is because they want better cameras. The Galaxy S8 has a 12-megapixel rear camera with F1.7 aperture and Dual Pixel autofocus like its predecessor. The quality is slightly improved as the Galaxy S8 uses a new sensor and a multi-frame processor, but unless you’re looking to win any mobile photography competitions, the Galaxy S7 edge’s camera can hold its own against the best of them.

Granted that selfie lovers are going to appreciate the Galaxy S8′s 8-megapixel front-facing camera, which also has autofocus which is a first from Samsung. It’s a 1/3.6-inch camera sensor with F1.7 aperture and the ability to record QHD resolution video.

The Galaxy S8 may have an octa-core 10nm 64-bit Exynos 8895 processor which Samsung claims provides a 27 percent improvement in performance compared to the Galaxy S7 edge’s Exynos 8890 processor, but that doesn’t mean its predecessor is a slouch in the performance department.

The Galaxy S7 edge itself provided a 50 percent improvement in performance compared to the Galaxy S6, so while there is going to be a noticeable difference, it’s not like the Galaxy S7 edge will be completely smoked by its successor. It offers decent performance which will be enough for whatever the daily usage requirements of most users are (including all the latest games). We’re never using all of the performance all of the time so yes, better numbers do stand out on specs sheets, but we need to ask ourselves if we’re ever going to utilize the full potential.

We were very happy with the Galaxy S7 edge’s 3,600mAh battery, but not with those found in the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8+. The new flagships feature a 3,000mAh and 3,500mAh battery respectively. Both handsets are larger and have bigger displays yet have smaller batteries. The result is unimpressive. We got hardly 3 hours of screen on time from the S8 during testing and that’s not something you’d expect from a flagship smartphone. Again, the S8+ fares better, but the S7 edge does good at battery endurance as well.

With prices starting at 800 Euro for the Galaxy S8, it goes without saying that the new flagship is expensive. So if you already own the Galaxy S7 edge and have been thinking about upgrading, you need to ask yourself if it’s going to be worth it when your existing device already offers exceptional performance, good battery life, amazing camera quality, and a design that’s still ahead of its competition.

Sure, if you like always having the latest device on you, then, by all means, buy the Galaxy S8. If you have a real need for features like iris scanning and facial recognition, it becomes even easier to recommend.

However, if you’re going to use it like most people use their smartphones, for calling, texting, social media, taking pictures and playing games then you already own the best device for all of it.

Galaxy J7 (2016) receives April security patch in India

Samsung is rolling out a new software update for the Galaxy J7 (2016) in India. It’s a minor update that weighs in at just under 26MB. As you can probably guess by the size of this update, it doesn’t bring much in the way of new features. What it does bring is the April security patch.

The April security patch features fixes for 49 Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) in the Android OS as well as fixes for 16 vulnerabilities in Samsung’s own software. The patch includes a fix for a bug that could have allowed hackers to access crash log files.

Most of the patches that have been disclosed in the security patch are listed as “privately disclosed” to prevent hackers from exploiting them in the time it takes for the firmware to be properly distributed to all users.

Firmware version J710FXXU3AQD4 is now being rolled out for the Galaxy J7 (2016) in India. Those who haven’t received an over-the-air update notification already should expect it to pop up on their device very soon.

Galaxy Note 8 dual camera system predicted by KGI analyst

Samsung confirmed last year that despite the failure that it suffered with the Galaxy Note 7 it was going to launch a new phablet in 2017. Since then, we’ve often heard rumors about the Galaxy Note 8 and now we have a prediction from renowned KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo who is normally known for his predictions about Apple’s products.

Kuo claims that the Galaxy Note 8 is going to be Samsung’s first smartphone with a dual camera system on the back, going so far as to call it the “most important upgrade” in the Galaxy Note 8. The analyst also predicts that the dual cameras will feature 3x optical zoom, 12-megapixel wide-angle CIS supporting dual photodiode (2PD), 13MP telephoto CIS, dual 6P lenses and dual Optical Image Stabilization.

He even claims that the Galaxy Note 8′s dual camera system is going to be “much better than that of the iPhone 7 Plus” and may even match the one Apple opts for the OLED iPhone that it’s due to launch later this year.

It’s not surprising to see that Kuo is making this prediction given that the Galaxy S8 was also expected to feature a dual camera system at one point in time. We even saw images of a Galaxy S8+ prototype recently which featured a dual camera system on the back.

Samsung did patent a thinner dual camera system recently which revealed that the company is interested in making its own dual camera system so it remains a possibility that we might see it in the Galaxy Note 8. It’s not set it stone just yet but it’s not impossible either.

Galaxy J3 (2017) will be running Android 7.0 Nougat when it arrives

Samsung seems to be gearing up to launch a refreshed Galaxy J series. We’ve been hearing reports about the devices in this series for the past couple of weeks. Just yesterday we saw some purported leaked photos of the Galaxy J5 (2017). That handset is believed to run Android 7.0 Nougat of the box and now there’s more reason to believe that all devices in the Galaxy J (2017) will be powered by Nougat.

The Galaxy J3 (2017) bearing model number SM-J330F has surfaced on the Wi-Fi Alliance website. The certification reveals that this device is going to be powered by Android 7.0 Nougat. Not much is known about the specifications of this handset but considering that it’s the base model in the company’s mid-range series, the specs will be nothing to write home about.

Samsung is yet to confirm when it’s going to launch the Galaxy J (2017) series. Given that we’re hearing more and more details about these devices it may not be long before the company makes its new mid-range series official.

Samsung discusses how it “redefined what’s possible in safety” with the Galaxy S8

When Samsung launches a new product, it typically takes to its Newsroom to share an interview shedding light on the creative process — and as expected, it’s done the same for the Galaxy S8, but (rightfully) shifted the focus towards the safety practices it put into place, like an 8-Point Battery Safety Check, to ensure something like the Galaxy Note 7 debacle doesn’t happen again.

Funnily enough, a few questions we actually had were answered during the interview, like whether the Galaxy S8 has received third-party certification and what the firm’s main priority while developing the handset was. If you’d like to find out answers to these questions too, hit the source link below to read the full Q&A over on Samsung’s website. It’s pretty interesting.

The South Korean company also shared a short video detailing the Battery Safety Check process for the Galaxy S8, which you can check out below.

It may not be long before the complete manual is released in languages other than English as well. The manual is 234 pages long and doesn’t reveal anything about the device that we don’t already know, but those who are curious will take a look regardless.
