Themes Thursday: Have a look at these sixteen new themes released today in Samsung Theme Store

Welcome to Themes Thursday! Samsung has released sixteen new themes in the Theme Store today, and no, those two stock Android themes that we reported about yesterday were not included in this week’s new themes. I hope Samsung released them next Thursday. You can have a look at all the new themes below. I personally liked the Flying Blue _MINDON Design theme, because it has a material wallpaper and rounded icons. Which one did you like?

Samsung will most probably release themes functionality to all the upcoming high-end Galaxy devices, but I hope for it make way for some older but high-end devices like the Galaxy S5 and the Galaxy Note 4. It would be really great if the company bundles this feature with even its upcoming low-end and mid-range smartphones.

Samsung sells over 10,000 SUHD TVs in South Korea

Samsung unveiled its high-end SUHD TVs earlier this year at the Consumer Electronics Show 2015 in Las Vegas, it took a few months from when they were announced to when they were actually released in many markets across the globe. These new TVs from Samsung aren’t cheap by any means but many won’t dispute the price tag for the impressive technology that the SUHD TVs boast, it appears that the price tag hasn’t deterred South Koreans from buying this Samsung product.

The company has sold more than 10,000 SUHD TV units in its home base of South Korea, it was able to sell all of these units in just three months as the SUHD TVs were released in South Korea around mid-February. There have been no reports so far confirming similar performance of this product in other markets nevertheless the product seems to have found a decent support base in South Korea. Samsung’s SUHD TVs also offer many software apps and services, they even support the PlayStation Now game streaming service which lets users stream PlayStation games right to the TV without needing to hook up a console.

Samsung developing security update to patch keyboard vulnerability

We reported yesterday how a vulnerability in the default keyboard software of millions of Samsung mobile devices could leave users at risk of being targeted by attackers, the vulnerability was discovered and disclosed by Ryan Welton from NowSecure during the Blackhat Security Summit in London. The vulnerability stemmed from the SwiftKey keyboard pre-installed on countless Samsung smartphones which sends searches for keyboard language packs unencrypted and in plain text, leaving the door open for attackers to create spoof proxy servers to inject malicious code remotely.

NowSecure found the vulnerability to be present in devices such as the Galaxy Note 4, Note 3, Galaxy S3, S4, S5 as well as the Galaxy S6 and S6 edgeSamsung has now officially commented on the issue, saying that it takes emerging security threats “very seriously,” and that it’s aware of this particular issue. It’s going to roll out the security update in a couple of days to address this once and for all.

Samsung takes emerging security threats very seriously. We are aware of the recent issue reported by several media outlets and are committed to providing the latest in mobile security. Samsung Knox has the capability to update the security policy of the phones, over-the-air, to invalidate any potential vulnerabilities caused by this issue. The security policy updates will begin rolling out in a few days. In addition to the security policy update, we are also working with SwiftKey to address potential risks going forward.

Samsung’s P3 Portable is the world’s thinnest 4TB external HDD

External hard drives are turning into a booming business now that it’s not just Apple making uber-slim notebooks. Chances are that if you own a laptop purchased in the last couple of years, you also have an external hard disk — or a few — for your truck loads of media.

Samsung is taking the thin quotient from laptop to external hard disk, with the new 4TB P3 Portable. It isn’t mere coincidence that the P3 Portable happens to be a super thin device; it is in fact a mere 0.78 inches thick! Along with that, there’s another feature that makes the P3 Portable super portable — the fact that it doesn’t need power from external sources (other than the computer’s USB port). How cool is that!

Pricing is yet to be announced, but the device will go on sale later this month along with the M3 Portable which is a rugged-ish traveler friendly hard disk.

Two Material themes are finally launching on the Galaxy S6 and the S6 edge

Samsung has already released a number of themes for the Galaxy S6 and the S6 edge on the Theme Store, but none of them are actually that great. Most of them are cartoonish icons and other UI elements. I personally like only a couple of them; Urban and LEGO. A lot of buyers have already dreamed about Material Design theme for the Galaxy S6, and someone has already developed it.

A theme designer, who is also a senior member in the XDA Forums, has mentioned that two Material Design themes developed by him have already been approved by Samsung. The developer expects them to be released in the Theme Store by Samsung in the next few days (maybe tomorrow). Themes on the Galaxy S6 and its curvier variant can change the look and feel of settings menu, notifications bar, quick setting toggles, icons and UI of pre-installed apps, keyboard, wallpaper, fonts, and notification sounds. For those (someone like me) who enjoy stock Android interface, these themes would be ideal.

When these themes are released on the Theme Store, we will notify you in our new dedicated section, Themes Thursday. Are you excited for these two themes? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

Game Recorder+ records your gaming sessions on the Galaxy S6, S6 edge and other handsets

Smartphone manufacturers are particularly focusing on mobile gaming in their handsets these days as casual gaming on smartphones takes off, naturally people want to record their gaming sessions and share them with friends and family. Samsung has a solution for that it’s an app called Game Recorder+. The app was initially available only for the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge, which are mean mobile gaming machines as pointed out by Samsung in its latest promo, but now it’s available for more Samsung handsets.

Game Recorder+ has a floating UI is overlaid on top of any game from where it lets users easily record their gaming sessions in up to full HD 1080p resolution. Users can also trim the video after it has been recorded and take advantage of the front facing camera and built-in microphone to record their commentary over the game audio.

The app is capable of recording touch interactions and allows users to upload finished videos directly to YouTube. In countries like China where direct access to YouTube is not permitted the video is saved to the device’s gallery from where users can share it to other platforms. Users who have the Galaxy S6 or the Galaxy S6 edge can record noise-free gaming audio which disables the microphone temporary while the recording is in progress. Game Recorder+ is a free app available for the Samsung Galaxy S6, S6 edge, Galaxy S5, Galaxy S4, Note 4, Note 3 and Note 2 in 161 countries from the Google Play and Galaxy App Store.

Samsung has reportedly delayed production of its first in-house mobile GPU

We reported last year that Samsung is working on an in-house mobile GPU or graphics processor for its Exynos mobile CPUs, it was reported to have lured away engineers from NVIDIA, AMD, Intel and other companies for this purpose. Developing its own GPU would free Samsung from having to license mobile GPUs from other companies, the company currently relies upon ARM’s Mali series of GPUs for its mobile devices and only recently signed a long-term agreement with ARM to license its GPUs.

Towards the end of last year it was rumored that Samsung’s in-house mobile GPU is going to debut in mid-2015 but so far the company has made no such announcement. A report out of Korea today cites industry sources which claim that the development of Samsung’s mobile GPU has been delayed by as much as five years. It’s also points out that Samsung would have invested a significant amount of money in its long-term licensing deal with AMD, a deal which is expected to be good for five years.

Samsung may have chosen to stick with ARM GPUs for now because they deliver proven performance while the possibility remains that its first in-house mobile GPU may or may not be up to that mark. Moreover with GPUs from rivals like Adreno and PowerVR rapidly improving in performance, sticking with ARM ensures that Samsung’s devices offer graphics performance that is at least at par if not greater than other devices in the market. Samsung has not yet officially confirmed if it has delayed the launch of its first in-house mobile GPU.
