Smallest Galaxy S11 could have a surprisingly big battery

The smallest of the Galaxy S11 models may have a surprisingly big battery, one that’s larger than the battery you find on the Galaxy S10 (yes, the Galaxy S10, not the Galaxy S10e). Certification for a Samsung battery with product code EB-BG980ABY has appeared on the Safety Korea website, and it is accompanied by a photo of the actual battery.

This is guaranteed to be the battery for the smallest Galaxy S11 model, which we will call the Galaxy S11e from here on out, as the ‘G980’ in the battery’s product code matches what should be the model number for the phone. The Galaxy S11 series will have model numbers in the SM-G98xx range, following SM-G97xx for the Galaxy S10, SM-G96xx for the Galaxy S9… you get the gist.

Galaxy S11e could have a 3,800-3,900 mAh battery

Now, while the numbers are hard to read because of the low-resolution image, there’s one figure in there that suggests that tiny batteries could go out of fashion on Samsung’s Galaxy S flagship lineup next year: 14.36 Wh. That’s the rated battery capacity mentioned in the Watt Hour unit and is rather easy to make out among the otherwise indecipherable numbers. Smartphone batteries usually operate at 3.85 volts, and that means we’re looking at a battery capacity of around 3,730 mAh (Wh/volts).

And if that is the rated battery capacity, then the Galaxy S11e will probably have a typical battery capacity of 3,800-3,900 mAh, which is the figure that will be marketed to customers. Considering the Galaxy S10e has a 3,100 mAh battery, that’s a substantial upgrade. Those who prefer compact phones have always received the short end of the stick as far as battery endurance is concerned, but the smallest Galaxy S11 model may finally change that.

Could 5G be the reason for the bigger battery?

We can even speculate why Samsung may finally be putting a not-tiny battery on the Galaxy S11e. Next year, all three Galaxy S10 models are expected to have a 5G variant, which wasn’t the case for the Galaxy S10 lineup. And while 5G connectivity is super fast, it also has higher battery drain. The Galaxy Note 10 5G, which is only available in South Korea, has a 3,500 mAh battery, and Samsung will probably want to make sure the Galaxy S11e has a similarly sized battery so consumers can enjoy the fruits of 5G networks without the constant worry of running out of battery juice.

What do you think? Would a larger battery make you more open to opting for the most compact of the Galaxy S11 models, or would you still prefer the Plus model or the regular S11?

Third Galaxy S10 Android 10 beta update released, get it now!

Samsung has released a new Android 10 beta update for the Galaxy S10 series. The latest beta is the same build that was released for the Galaxy S10 5G in Korea yesterday and introduces another round of bug fixes. It comes with software version G97**XXU3ZSK3 and should be available in all countries where the One UI 2.0 beta program is available for the Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10, and Galaxy S10+. This is the third beta update for those in Germany, Korea, and the US and the second one for all other markets.

A word of warning for those who use Samsung DeX on PC: Samsung notes that the third Android 10 beta build does not support Samsung DeX on PC, or at least the version of DeX that is currently available for Windows and Mac. We can confirm that it doesn’t work; the company will be releasing a beta version of the DeX PC app that works with Android 10, but it doesn’t say when. As for bug fixes, it’s a pretty long list that you can see for yourself in the screenshot below. Hopefully, these fixes aren’t accompanied by a critical issue like the previous beta update.

To download the new beta, open the Settings app on your phone, tap Software update, then tap Download and install.

Samsung confirms it wants to ‘significantly increase’ foldable sales next year

Samsung CEO DJ Koh has recently confirmed that the company aims to sell a lot more foldable devices in 2020. ‘We will significantly increase the sales of foldable smartphones next year,‘ said DJ Koh at the annual Samsung AI forum in Seoul.

Over the past few weeks, Samsung has been teasing us with vague glimpses of what the foldable future might look like. The company confirmed at SDC 2019 that it is at least considering the possibility of a clamshell form factor for a future foldable phone. More recently at the AI forum, DJ Koh claimed ‘We are confident that consumers will see more foldable smartphones next year,‘ lending even more credibility to the idea that Samsung could release more than one foldable model in 2020.

Samsung might be aiming for 6 million foldable units sold

Samsung aims to sell around 6 million foldable phones next year, at least according to a rumor that was passed along a couple of weeks ago. DJ Koh didn’t reveal any exact figures at the recent event in Seoul, but that’s probably because Samsung has yet to set this detail in stone. It was said that Samsung’s original target for 2020 was to sell 10 million foldable phones, but the figure was dropped to a more realistic 6 million units.

Having said that, exact figures are subject to change and it’s likely that even Samsung isn’t very sure about the demand that foldable devices will have next year. Either way, the company wants to push foldable display tech further, and we will see more of it in 2020.

All in all, Samsung’s foldable journey has only just started. Hopefully, the company will introduce its foldable display tech at different price points come next year, and perhaps future foldable devices will be less difficult to obtain.

Are you excited for Samsung’s foldable phone future? Have you adopted the Galaxy Fold or are you waiting for the technology to mature? Would you be more willing to switch to this emerging form factor next year? If not then what would convince you to abandon the true and tested candy bar form factor? New Galaxy Buds update continues to improve Bluetooth connectivity

Samsung is rolling out a new software update for the Galaxy Buds. The package weighs only 1.38MB and it’s identified as software version R170XXU0ASJ2. This is a fairly minor update, but one that should be very welcomed thanks to its improvements to Bluetooth connectivity.

The changelog mentions “Stabilized Bluetooth connection through added fixes” and, indeed, we can confirm that the connection is now more stable.

Galaxy Buds Bluetooth connectivity continues to get better

The Galaxy Buds experience has been improving at a steady pace ever since the wearable was introduced to the market earlier this year. Bluetooth connectivity has been one of the main areas of improvement, with connection dropouts becoming less frequent as time went on. The Buds have received at least a couple of Bluetooth-related updates so far.

That’s not to say that the Galaxy Buds needed firmware updates to become good. They were already pretty solid, and about three months ago Consumer Reports praised the product with an “excellent” rating in the sound quality category.

As usual, Galaxy Buds owners can grab the latest update by pairing the wearables to their smartphones. Users should then receive a notification about the update and download the firmware through the Galaxy Wearable app.

Galaxy S10 5G gets a new Android 10 beta update

Samsung has released the second Android 10 One UI 2.0 beta update for the Galaxy S10 5G. The 5G Galaxy S10 model was not included in the beta program for the regular Galaxy S10 models but received a separate beta program over in South Korea. The Galaxy S10e, S10, and S10+ received their second Android 10 beta update around the same time the Galaxy S10 5G beta program was kicked off, and the 5G model is now getting a new beta build as well.

The Galaxy S10 5G’s second Android 10 beta doesn’t seem to have the same changelog as the one for the LTE models, although we can’t be fully sure as translation from Korean is something neither Google nor Bixby handle very well. The new build has quite a few bug fixes, though, and if you own a Galaxy S10 5G, you should get it right away by going into the Settings » Software update menu on the phone and tapping Download and install. It comes with build number G977NKSU2ZSK3 and is a 552 MB download.

As for when the next beta update for the Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10, and Galaxy S10+ will be released, your guess is as good as ours. We’re also waiting on Samsung to expand the Android 10 beta for the Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+ to more markets. The Note 10 beta debuted in Germany on October 28 (after a false start on October 25) and is yet to be launched even in the US or South Korea, so it remains to be when countries like India, France, Spain, Poland, and the UK will get it.

Thanks for the tip, @jrwut!

Samsung has some tips on what product to buy this holiday season

With the holiday season fast approaching, many of us are going to be looking for the best deals out there for smartphones, smartwatches, and other devices, but what about deciding exactly which product is right for you? Well, Samsung wants to lend a helping hand and has published a small little guide that tells you why the company thinks some of the devices launched this year, like the Galaxy Watch Active 2, Galaxy Fold, Galaxy S10, and the Galaxy Note 10, should be the one you should pick.

The guide is more or less just marketing speak for all the products. The Galaxy Fold, for example, is a great choice because it has a tablet-sized screen that fits in the palm of your hand because, you know, it’s a foldable device. And how the Multi-active Window feature lets you use three apps at the same time, something that isn’t possible on any other Galaxy smartphone or tablet. Fitness freaks can choose between the Galaxy Watch Active 2 or the Galaxy Fit, while Samsung believes the Galaxy S10+ is the best choice for the photographer.

You could argue that the Galaxy Note 10+ is just as good for imaging, but according to Samsung, the Note 10+ is a better choice for gamers, thanks to its vapor chamber cooling system that keeps the device cool during intense gaming sessions and the S Pen integration in some games. On the other end of the pricing spectrum, Samsung touts the Chromebook 4 as “a portable, reliable, and cost-effective way to quickly tap into the Google experience” for students, in addition to the Galaxy A50, which has “upgraded essentials” and all-day battery life.

Again, it just seems like Samsung wanted to remind everyone what these devices offer rather than make a compelling case for why they should be purchased. The company says it will also share promotions and deals through the holiday season, and hopefully, those will actually be of help to the general public. Don’t worry, even if they’re not, you can count on us to be sharing the best deals and discounts on Samsung devices here on SamMobile in the coming weeks.

Vivo may unveil its Samsung 5G Exynos 980 powered phone tomorrow

Samsung announced the Exynos 980 mid-range chip two months ago. It’s the first mobile processor from the company to feature an integrated 5G modem. This solution will enable 5G connectivity to trickle down to more affordable devices.

Chinese smartphone manufacturer Vivo had confirmed that it was working on a smartphone that will be powered by the Exynos 980. Samsung and Vivo have scheduled a press conference in Beijing tomorrow where this device is likely going to be unveiled.

Samsung and Vivo to conduct a joint press conference tomorrow

It appears that the first smartphone to use Samsung’s integrated 5G modem is not going to be one from the Korean giant itself. The “vivo X Samsung 5G AI chip press conference” has been scheduled for tomorrow in Beijing where the handset, believed to be the Vivo X30, might become official. Even if Vivo doesn’t actually unveil the device tomorrow, we’ll certainly get to hear more details about their partnership with Samsung.

Samsung has based the Exynos 980 on its 8nm FinFET process technology. It features an octacore processor with two 2.2Ghz Cortex-A77 cores and six 1.80GHz Cortex-A55 cores. The chipset also features a Mali-G76 MP5 GPU. There’s support for UFS 2.1 storage and WQHD+ (3360×1440) display, in addition, to support for a single 108MP camera system or a 20MP + 20MP dual camera system.

The chip features an onboard neural processing unit for AI tasks. It should allow for enhanced AI-based camera features, content filtering, user authentication and more. What stands out about this chip is its integrated 5G modem. It supports everything from 5G down to 2G and is also compatible with the new Wi-Fi 6 standard.

Samsung previously said that it will begin the mass production of the 5G Exynos 980 by the end of this year. So it’s possible that the Vivo device it will debut in may not hit the market for several weeks. Samsung’s own devices may start featuring this chip from early next year.
