Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) goes official with triple rear cameras

After many leaks, Samsung has officially launched the Galaxy A7, its latest addition to the Galaxy A lineup (Samsung isn’t using the 2018 tag, but we’re guessing it will be present on the retail devices). Looking at the feature set, it appears to be the first device under the company’s new strategy for mid-range smartphones, whereby new features, even those that are not there on flagships, are added to the mid-rangers to make them stand out in the crowded market.

New Samsung Galaxy A7 gets a side-mounted fingerprint sensor

Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018)

The Galaxy A7 features the same glass unibody design we have seen on other recent Samsung mid-range smartphones. It, however, brings one major design change to the table – a side-mounted fingerprint reader, embedded into the power button. It is the first Galaxy smartphone to do so (alongside the Galaxy J6+) and you will have to wait for our review to find out how it impacts device handling and sensor accuracy. Samsung has also put the volume and power buttons on the same side of the device, which might not be easy to adjust to for long-time Galaxy users.

The Galaxy A7 specs include a 6-inch FHD+ (1080×2220) Super AMOLED Infinity display, unspecified octa-core processor clocked at 2.2GHz, a 3,300mAh battery, and Android 8.0 Oreo. It will be available in 4GB/64GB, 4GB/128GB, and 6GB/128GB configurations. The device also sports a microSD Slot with support for cards up to 512GB. Software features include Dolby Atmos for headphones and Bluetooth audio, Samsung Pay, and Bixby (without Bixby Voice support).

Triple rear cameras, 24-megapixel front-facing camera

Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018)

The main attraction of the Galaxy A7 (2018) is its triple camera setup on the back – a first for a Galaxy smartphone. It consists of a 24MP primary lens with F1.7 aperture, 8MP ultra-wide F2.4 lens for wide-angle photos, and a 5MP F2.2 depth sensor. On the front, there is a 24MP selfie shooter (F2.0) with an adjustable LED flash. While the hardware looks impressive on paper, it remains to be seen how those triple cameras perform in real-world scenarios.

The ultra-wide lens has a 120-degree viewing angle, the “same viewing angle as the human eye”. The combination of the primary lens and the depth lens will enable the Live Focus feature which lets users add a bokeh (background blur) effect on their photos. Increasingly common Galaxy camera features like Selfie Focus, Pro Lighting Mode, AR Emoji, and filters are also present here. The A7 also gets the Scene Optimizer feature that was introduced on the Galaxy Note 9 (and released for the Galaxy A8 Star with a software update).

Galaxy A7 goes on sale this fall

Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018)

The Galaxy A7 will come in blue, black, gold and pink. It will be available this fall in select European and Asian markets initially and expand to other markets later. The company has not revealed the pricing yet, and although rumors point at a ~$400 price tag, it’s unclear if the new A7 will be that cheap given the hardware it packs.

SamMobile Daily Recap: September 19, 2018: Leaked Android Pie, Galaxy S10, and more

Separate 5G Galaxy S10 model is likely being developed

Some evidence has surfaced amid rumors that there may be a separate 5G Galaxy S10 model. It suggests that this particular model may indeed be in development. This means that all models of the Galaxy S10 might not have support for the next-generation network technology.

Previous reports have already revealed that Samsung has assigned the “Beyond” codename to the Galaxy S10. It has also been mentioned in reports that Samsung will launch three different models of the Galaxy S10. These models are reportedly classified internally as the Beyond 0, Beyond 1 and Beyond 2. The 5G model will be a variant of the Beyond 2.

Separate 5G Galaxy S10 model in development

Some configuration files in the leaked Android 9.0 for Galaxy S9 build contain references to the Beyond models. The Beyond 0, 1 and 2 codenames are present in addition to the Beyond 2 5G reference. The file names are also separate for the Exynos and Snapdragon-powered variants.

Beyond 0 is likely a more affordable model of the new flagship. A 5.8-inch display, single rear camera and a side-mounted fingerprint sensor might be present on this model. Beyond 1 would be the successor to the Galaxy S9 with its 5.8-inch display and dual rear camera. Beyond 2 will be the Galaxy S10+ with a 6.4-inch display, triple rear and dual front camera. Both Beyond 1 and 2 are expected to feature an in-display fingerprint sensor.

The separate 5G Galaxy S10 model may only be launched in South Korea initially as their 5G networks are expected to be fired up early next year. Samsung could bring this variant to the United States as well when the country’s carriers launch their 5G networks later on in the year.

Not shipping every Galaxy S10 model with a 5G modem would mean that the LTE-only units will not be future-proof. They may cost a bit cheaper as the 5G modems will likely come at a premium but those customers would need to upgrade their devices once 5G networks start becoming widely available in a couple of years.

Samsung’s October 11 Galaxy event will take place in Malaysia

A few days back, Samsung posted a teaser on its website for a Galaxy event on October 11. No venue was mentioned then, but the company has now revealed the event will take place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, by sending out event invites to media outlets in the country. This is apparently the first time Samsung is holding a global launch event in Malaysia. The company usually organizes its major launch events in European and American cities.

A new Galaxy A9 with four cameras?

We still don’t know what Samsung is going to launch on October 11. All the evidence and reports so far are pointing to a new Galaxy A smartphone, presumably a new Galaxy A9, with four cameras. Since the Galaxy A series targets developing economies predominantly, the change of event venue from developed markets to an emerging economy is probably a hint that the company is indeed going to a launch a Galaxy A series device at the event. The ‘4x fun’ wording on the invite also lends some credibility to these rumors.

DJ Koh, head of Samsung Mobile, recently announced a significant change in strategy for company’s midrange smartphones. Instead of just borrowing some features from flagship smartphones, Samsung now wants to pack its midrange devices with new and unique features of their own. Koh announced plans to launch a new device under this aggressive strategy in Q4 this year. Perhaps, this is the device we will see on October 11?

Galaxy Note 9 Bixby update brings an interesting fix for accidental presses

Pressing that Bixby key on the Galaxy Note 9, like previous Samsung devices with the Bixby key, fires up Bixby Voice. But, out of the box, the Note 9 had no option to prevent the Bixby key from doing anything. Samsung promised it would bring the option back with an update by the end of this month, and it has now started rolling out that update. And, interestingly, Samsung doesn’t want you to completely disable it, only reduce chances of accidental presses.

Disable Galaxy Note 9 Bixby key? Samsung has an interesting solution

With the latest version of Bixby on the Galaxy Note 9, you can set the Bixby key to require two presses instead of one to fire up Bixby Voice. As before, long-pressing the key will always bring up Bixby Voice, but it won’t trouble you if you press the button once by accident, which is fairly easy thanks to the more sensitive physical keys on the Galaxy Note 9. They are so sensitive, in fact, that you can even pull out the Bixby key as an extreme measure if you don’t want it on your Note 9, although we don’t really recommend that unless you make a living out of breaking and tearing down smartphones.

If you own a Galaxy Note 9, you can find this option in the Bixby app’s settings after updating to the latest version. To update, press the Bixby key once to bring up the Bixby interface, tap the three-dot button on the top right, then tap Settings. Tap About Bixby Voice at the bottom of the settings menu, then hit the Update button. After updating, you can find a new Bixby key menu in the app’s settings, where you can select between requiring one or two presses of the Bixby button.

[Poll] What do you think of Samsung’s new UI in Android 9.0?

A leaked build of Android 9.0 for Galaxy S9 is out now and earlier today, we posted dozens of screenshots showcasing Samsung Experience 10.0. That’s the next major update of Samsung’s custom skin for Android which will come with the Android 9.0 Pie update.

Some features are broken in the leaked build but that’s to be expected from such an early version. It obviously has quite a few bugs as well. Nevertheless, it does give us a good look at the user interface changes that Samsung is working on. These include a new night mode, horizontal scrolling of recent apps, rounded corners and a new look for many of its native apps.

You have seen the screenshots already so the question is, what do you think of Samsung’s new user interface? Does it make you excited for the Android 9.0 Pie update? Or do you like things how they are right now and this major change doesn’t appeal to you? Vote below and discuss in the comments below.

Samsung Odyssey Z gaming laptop goes on sale in the US

Earlier this year, Samsung announced the Notebook Odyssey Z gaming laptop with Intel’s 8th generation hexa-core processors. More than five months after the announcement, it is finally available for purchase in the US. Unlike smartphones, Samsung sells PCs only in a few markets, so it is doubtful if this machine sees a wider release beyond a handful of regions.

The Notebook Odyssey Z comes in only one configuration with a 15.6-inch FHD display, Intel Core i7 8750H hexa-core processor, 16GB DDR4 RAM, 256 GB NVMe SSD, NVIDIA GTX 1060 graphics card, and Windows 10 Home. The laptop is available for purchase on the Samsung online store, Amazon, and Microsoft Store for $1,800.

Samsung Notebook Odyssey Z is priced at $1,800

The device features Z AeroFlow Cooling System for improved thermal management and consistent performance. While not exactly an ultrabook, it is thin and light by gaming laptop standards. Though the Notebook Odyssey Z is aimed at gamers, the specifications makes it ideal for video editing, 3D rendering, and other resource-intensive tasks as well.

“The Notebook Odyssey Z was engineered to enhance the gaming experience wherever you are – take it anywhere, play without overheating, and use it for the most intense games and projects,” said Alanna Cotton, Senior Vice President of Mobile Computing and Enhancements, Samsung America.

Download official Galaxy J4+ and Galaxy J6+ wallpapers!

Samsung has two new budget phones, the Galaxy J4+ and Galaxy J6+, joining its ever-growing smartphone lineup this month. And with new devices come new wallpapers. Well, not completely new, but the Galaxy J4+ and Galaxy J6+ get wallpapers similar to the ones found on the Galaxy Note 9 and Galaxy Tab S4 as these phones also run Android 8.1 Oreo. The wallpapers are full of color that go well with AMOLED displays, although it’s a shame that the J4+ and J6+ come with LCD displays instead of OLED panels.

Android 9.0 Pie: Test leaked build on your Galaxy S9+ Snapdragon model

Samsung hasn’t yet said anything about a beta program for Android 9.0 Pie on the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+, but the folks over at XDA Developers brought us good tidings today with a leaked build of Android Pie for the Galaxy S9+. It’s an early build for the Snapdragon model of the S9+ in the United States, and while it’s got plenty of issues and broken features, you can test it out on your Galaxy S9+ if you want to.

Leaked Galaxy S9+ Android 9.0 build: Try it if you live on the bleeding edge

To help you install the leaked Galaxy S9+ Android 9.0 firmware, we have a post on our forums with the complete instructions. But before you proceed, you should keep in mind quite a few things. First and foremost, since this is a leaked build, you can expect to run into issues. For example, the front camera doesn’t work at the moment and the night/dark theme for the interface cannot be disabled.

Secondly, the leaked Pie update is only for the Snapdragon Galaxy S9+ with model number SM-G965U. It’s a generic update for the unbranded model, so you should be able to install it no matter which carrier you’re subscribed to. Last but not the least, it might not be easy to return back to Android 8.0 Oreo if you try this out, so it’s best if only those who use their Galaxy S9+ as a secondary/spare device go ahead with this.

If none of the warnings deter you, you can head over to our forums for the instructions. Do let us know your experience if you install the early Android Pie firmware.

Disney AR Emoji lineup updated with Zootopia characters

The Disney AR Emoji lineup on the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9 has been updated today. Zootopia’s three main characters have been added to the lineup. Judy Hopps, Nick Wilde and Flash have joined the growing roster of Disney characters in AR Emoji.

AR Emoji was introduced by Samsung with the Galaxy S9. The feature creates a digital likeness of the user’s face and can track their facial movements to bring these characters to life. Samsung teamed up with Disney from the word go and that partnership has brought many of the latter’s popular characters to this feature.

Disney AR Emoji lineup updated

The 2016 mystery/crime animated film Zootopia did very well for itself. Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9 owners who loved this movie will be happy to get the characters in AR Emoji.

These are far from the only Disney AR Emoji characters. The first movie franchise to be a part of this feature was The Incredibles. Disney also brought the characters from its hugely popular 2013 movie Frozen just two months ago.

Disney AR Emoji

You can get the Zootopia Disney AR Emoji pack for free. Simply launch the camera app and swipe to AR Emoji mode. Tap on the plus icon in the bottom right side because Zootopia will be at the top of the list of available stickers. Tap on it to install the pack from the Galaxy Apps store. You can also install it directly from the store, so search for Zootopia AR Emoji. As a result, the characters will be available in the AR Emoji camera mode.

Samsung has released AR Emoji for Galaxy Note 8 and Galaxy S8 recently. However, it’s a watered-down version of the feature. You will only be able to use the Disney AR Emoji packs on the Galaxy Note 9 and Galaxy S9.

Samsung Internet 9.0 APK leaks with new user interface and features

A Samsung Internet 9.0 APK has been leaked online today. It stems from the leaked Android 9.0 for Galaxy S9 build (see all screenshots here) that has surfaced today. Samsung Internet has a dedicated fan following. The company updates it regularly with new features to keep users coming back for more.

The latest version of Samsung Internet brings a new user interface for the browser. The changes are in keeping with the new rounded corner UI elements that will be introduced with Samsung Experience 10.0.

Leaked Samsung Internet 9.0 APK shows off new design

Samsung Experience 10.0 will update the design of many native apps. It’s not surprising that the same treatment will also be given to Samsung Internet. There’s a redesigned quick access menu in Samsung Internet 9.0 which puts some core features front and center.

Samsung Internet 9.0 APK

The menu can be used to turn on night mode, change the text size, request desktop size and even control add-ons like the content blocker. The night mode will be a useful new feature. It will change the background and text color dynamically on websites without applying it to the images. It would have to be enabled manually as it’s not liked with the system-wide night mode that will be present in Android 9.0 for Galaxy S9.

The Android Pie build that has leaked only today is itself an early version with a few bugs and some broken features. Samsung Internet 9.0 may get further improvements in coming builds.

While the Samsung Internet 9.0 APK is available now we have chosen not to upload it on our APK page. There’s a good reason for that. Devices not running Android 9.0 can’t install this app. As many of you are well aware, Samsung is yet to release Android 9.0 Pie.

Galaxy S9 Android 9.0 Pie update being tested by Samsung in all countries

So Android 9.0 Pie for the Galaxy S9 just leaked, giving us our first look at what the next version of Android will look like on Samsung’s flagships. We decided to check with our sources what Samsung is doing at the moment once we saw the leak, and it looks like there’s good news. Samsung is testing Android 9.0 Pie for the Galaxy S9 and S9+ in every country at the moment.

Galaxy S9 Android 9.0 Pie under testing

It’s possible Samsung won’t have a public beta program for Pie and will directly release the final update to users around the world. However, that can’t be said for certain, so we will have to wait and see what the company plans to do with the Pie update. We certainly hope the beta program won’t be as long as it has been in the past for older versions of Android, as that would mean Android 9.0 Pie won’t arrive until next year.

Again, it remains to be seen what happens, but at this point we can confirm that Samsung is testing the new software in all of its markets. The leaked Pie build seems to be far from complete, so it’s best not to get your hopes up as Samsung could have some ways to go before it’s able to complete development.

Leaked Android 9.0 for Galaxy S9 reveals Samsung Experience 10 UI

Samsung hasn’t detailed its roadmap as yet so it’s unclear when it will release Android 9.0 for Galaxy S9. However, an early build of Android 9.0 for the Galaxy S9 has been leaked online. It shows that major user interface changes are part of this update. It brings Samsung Experience 10, the next iteration of Samsung’s custom skin for Android.

Since this is an early build, some user interface elements are incomplete and a few features are broken. As you can expect from a build this like there are bugs as well. Nevertheless, it does give us a good idea of what to expect from Android 9.0 for Galaxy S9.

Leaked early build of Android 9.0 for Galaxy S9

Android Pie for Galaxy S9

The new AMOLED dark theme is one of the biggest user interface changes in this update. Android Pie brings a dark theme and Samsung is calling it the night theme. It’s broken in this build as it can’t be switched off. There would obviously be an option to enable and disable the night theme in the final version. The options will allow users to manually enable it, have to enable automatically at a scheduled time or have it enabled automatically after sundown.

The card-style user interface that Google demonstrated during I/O 2018 is also present. The Quick Settings shade has been redesigned as well in keeping with this design language. The buttons are rounded and many of the options can be managed without having to open the Settings app.

The Android Pie flavor is also evident in the recent apps menu on Samsung Experience 10.0. There is a dock at the bottom now with the recent apps scrolling horizontally and not vertically like before. It has already been possible to get this using Good Lock on Samsung devices.

Gesture control is also included in this build of Android 9.0 for Galaxy S9. They’re not exactly the ones that Google has developed for the firmware. Users will be able to swipe up from the bottom in the position where the Home, Back and Recents buttons are located.

This gesture is enabled only when the navigation bar is hidden. A new motions and gestures menu has been added as well. It lists all of the previous gestures such as palm swipe to capture. There’s a new lift to wake feature which will wake up the device when it’s picked up.

Samsung has also updated many of its native apps in Samsung Experience 10.0. The dialer app gets the night theme as well. Buttons for contacts, keypad and recent have been moved to the bottom. The Messages update has been updated with the curved design and its buttons have been moved to the bottom as well.

There are user interface changes for Bixby Home as well. The design is similar to other updated system apps as it also gets curved borders and the night theme. This Android 9.0 for Galaxy S9 build doesn’t have any new Bixby Home features but that could change in the future. Other apps such as Mail, Gallery and Camera have all been updated too. The new camera app brings a couple of new options which don’t seem to be working in this build.
