Galaxy S10 series starts getting One UI 2.5 update

Six months ago, we had reported that Samsung is developing One UI 2.5 for its smartphones. The new software debuted with the Galaxy Note 20, Galaxy Z Flip 5G, and the Galaxy Tab S7 series. On the launch day of these devices, the South Korean firm released One UI 2.5 to the Galaxy S20 series and the Galaxy Z Flip. Now, the company has started rolling out the One UI 2.5 update to the Galaxy S10 series.

The Galaxy S10 has started receiving the One UI 2.5 update in Germany. It’s a 963.49MB update that carries firmware version G973FXXU8DTH7. The firmware versions for the Galaxy S10e and the Galaxy S10+ are G970FXXU8DTH7 and G975FXXU8DTH7, respectively.

The new software update brings along the September 2020 Android security patch. The One UI 2.5 update includes Wireless DeX, which debuted on the Galaxy Note 20 and the Galaxy Tab S7 series. It lets you mirror your smartphone’s DeX UI screen wirelessly to any TV that features Miracast. There is now a quick setting toggle for the Wireless DeX mode and options to adjust screen zoom and font size.

The new update also comes with an enhanced Pro Video Mode in the camera app, an easier way to share Wi-Fi credentials with other Galaxy devices, and the ability to search for YouTube videos in the keyboard app. The Pro Video Mode allows the selection of video resolution and frame rate, mic selection (front, rear, all, USB, or Bluetooth). The Galaxy S10 series also gets Single Take duration selection (5 seconds to 15 seconds).

Other features that are a part of the new software update for the Galaxy S10 are support for Bitmoji Stickers for the Always On Display mode, split keyboard in the landscape mode, SOS message pre-configuration, and the ability to send SOS location messages every 30 minutes for 24 hours. Bug fixes, security enhancement, and performance improvements are also a part of the update.

If you’re a Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10, or Galaxy S10+ user in Germany, you can check for the update by navigating to the phone’s Settings menu, selecting Software update, and tapping Download and install. You can also download the new firmware files from our firmware section. Other regions could soon get the update for the Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10+, and the Galaxy S10e.

Samsung leads the global TV and video streaming device market

Samsung has been the biggest TV brand in the world for fourteen years in a row. These days, TVs are being increasingly used to not only watch live channels but also to stream on-demand video from services like HBO Now, Netflix, Prime Video, and YouTube. Now, a new report shows that the South Korean tech brand topped the global TV and video streaming device market in Q1 2020.

During the pandemic, video streaming services broke records as most people stayed home for remote learning and remote working. According to Strategy Analytics, Samsung accounted for 14% of devices in use for video streaming on TVs during the first quarter of this year. The South Korean firm was followed by Sony with a market share of 12% and LG with an 8% share of the global market.

When it comes to TV streaming platforms and their market shares, Tizen ranked the first with a market share of 11 percent. Tizen was developed by Intel and Samsung. LG’s WebOS and Sony’s PlayStation platforms are tied at the second rank with a market share of 7% each. The report claims that over 1.1 billion people are currently using TVs to stream videos and that the market will grow further.

Strategy Analytics said, “Streaming video is increasingly viewed on TV screens rather than mobile devices, particularly during the pandemic. TV streaming platforms will become a dominant force in video streaming in many countries as demand for traditional pay TV, broadcast, and home video platforms declines.

Looking at this explosive growth of the video streaming segment, Samsung developed its own on-demand video streaming service Samsung TV+. It brings access to more than 130 channels for free and without any sign-in process. The user is not required to download any additional app or pay to watch anything. However, Samsung TV+ is only available in a few countries as of now.

Samsung to reportedly make 800,000 Galaxy Z Fold 2 units this year

Samsung recently launched the Galaxy Z Fold 2. The new device feels brings various improvements over its predecessor, the Galaxy Fold. The new phone has a much larger cover display, an inner screen with a higher refresh rate, better screen protection, improved cameras, and a more sophisticated folding mechanism. With so many improvements in place, the company is hoping to sell more Galaxy Z Fold 2 units than it did with the Galaxy Fold.

According to a new report from South Korea, Samsung is expected to manufacture 700,000 to 800,000 units of the Galaxy Z Fold 2. The company is manufacturing them at its smartphone factories in Brazil, South Korea, and Vietnam. An industry insider explained that Samsung manufacturing its foldable phone outside of its home country shows that it has managed to the yield of its manufacturing process. The company is now reportedly trying to cut manufacturing costs.

Analysts expect that Samsung could sell as many as three million foldable smartphones this year, thanks to its diversified portfolio that includes the Galaxy Z Flip. Next year, the sales of foldable phones could reach as high as eight million. The company is rumored to be preparing cheaper-priced foldable smartphones for near the future.

Although Huawei, Microsoft, and Motorola have launched foldable smartphones as well, Samsung appears to be in a better position from a technological standpoint. Due to its upper hand, the South Korean tech giant is expected to be in the leading position in the foldable segment for quite an amount of time.

Galaxy Book Flex 5G launches with latest and greatest Intel processors

The Galaxy Book Flex 5G is official as of today, with Samsung announcing its latest premium notebook line in parallel with the launch of the 11th generation of Intel’s processors. It’s also the world’s first laptop range with both 5G support and Intel Evo certification of excellence, which includes guarantees of instant system wake time and extremely long-lasting battery life in real-world scenarios. Naturally, the 2-in-1 series leverages some of the higher-end chips based on the so-called “Tiger Lake” architecture. Samsung promised variants with i5 and i7 CPUs, though it isn’t being too specific on the exact models we’re going to see.

That’s not exactly a huge issue as the main differences between the two i5 and three i7 chips Intel announced just minutes ago is their approach to balancing energy consumption with raw computing power. And as the division line Intel drew here is at the 15W/25W peak, it’s to be assumed the Galaxy Book Flex 5G series will either exclusively or largely make use of the higher-powered Tiger Lake CPUs as all of the new models will be using a 70Wh battery.

Samsung wants to make the Galaxy Book Flex 5G synonymous with power

If there’s one word Samsung wants you to remember from today’s announcement, that would be “power.” Seriously, it mentioned it exactly eight times in about as many paragraphs. Meaning its entire product pitch lives and dies by yet another refinement of Intel’s 10nm process. Which may have reached meme status in recent years and the actual technology may be falling behind AMD in some departments, but let’s not get emotionally invested into a fistfight between two giant conglomerates but instead be glad competition exists.

As for the Tiger Lake CPUs, all of the ones that will power the Galaxy Book Flex 5G will feature Intel’s new Iris Xe graphics chips, which are pretty amazing for many reasons beyond their value as an excuse for writing in superscript. Because Intel® Iris® Xe™(trademark pending, probably) promises up to 20% faster processing and 20% lower power consumption, depending on the use case. That should result in roughly one hour of extra battery life compared to the original Galaxy Book Flex models.

At 96 execution units, a third more than last-gen Iris Plus GPUs, the integrated version of Intel Xe should be twice as powerful, assuming properly optimized applications. This is a huge boost for gaming and something that will make high-end gaming much more feasible on Samsung’s latest notebook range. Not that it was out of the question up until now, but there’s only so much you can do inside a 14.9mm chasis before throttling ruins your day without paying a lot of money to world-class chip architects.

The rest of the specs are pretty much identical to the Galaxy Book Flex range released ten months back, but in case you need a refresher, you can find them listed below. Samsung will be releasing the Galaxy Book Flex 5G lineup globally this fall. Pricing details should be released in the meantime, likely by early September if we are to assume the company would very much like to get this high-end hardware to retailers in time for the shopping-heavy holiday season, which it would.

Galaxy A51 was Samsung’s most-shipped phone in H1, beating iPhones

The Galaxy A51 was Samsung’s best-selling smartphone not only in Q1 2020 but throughout the whole first half of the year. It was the world’s second most-shipped handset in H1 2020 with 11.4 million units in tow, according to market research and consultancy firm Omdia. The Galaxy A51 was outperformed only by Apple’s iPhone 11 with 37.7 million shipments, and was followed by a handful of other iPhone and Redmi models.

Unfortunately for Samsung, the Galaxy A51 was its only smartphone to reach Omdia’s list of top 10 most-shipped smartphones of H1 2020, and in turn, it was Samsung’s only smartphone model to exceed 6.7 million shipments throughout the 6-month period. Comparatively, in the first half of 2019 Samsung had four devices on Omdia’s list, including the Galaxy A10, Galaxy A30, Galaxy A50, and even the Galaxy J2 Core with 9.9 million shipments.

Samsung has clearly lost some ground during these difficult times of global pandemic and it remains to be seen if the company’s fortunes will improve in H2 2020. The Galaxy A51 may have lost some of its appeal in the meantime as newer devices like the Galaxy M31s offer better value for money. More recently, Samsung unveiled the Galaxy A42 5G as an even more affordable alternative to the Galaxy A51 5G, so the market has plenty of new Galaxy devices to choose from for the remainder of the year.

BTS fans in the UK can now capture XR selfies with the band members

Samsung is bringing members of the K-pop band BTS to the UK; not in person but through XR (cross reality) technology, the Galaxy S20+ BTS Edition, and its lifestyle TV The Sero. Using these technologies combined, the company has created an XR zone at Samsung KX, London’s Coal Drops Yard, where visitors can capture videos and virtual selfies with members of BTS.

Samsung’s collaboration with the K-pop band BTS began earlier this year when the company released the Galaxy S20+ BTS Edition alongside the purple Galaxy Buds+ BTS Edition. The partnership has greatly helped Samsung put the Galaxy S20 series on the map on numerous social media platforms, and BTS continued to be involved in other promos including a Galaxy Z Fold 2 unboxing and first reaction video.

Taking a selfie with your favorite BTS member

It’s not the best time to attend concerts and chances of getting a selfie with a celebrity in the current pandemic climate are virtually non existent. But fans of BTS who happen to visit Samsung KX in London can take an XR selfie with the K-pop band’s members in an augmented/cross reality environment set up by Samsung.

The AR/XR area is equipped with The Sero as a preview screen and the Galaxy S20+ BTS Edition as the shooting device. Visitors can capture personalized videos with the XR BTS members and they can also take home a printed selfie.

The BTS Edition bundle was released in the UK on July 9 after a pre-order period of a couple of weeks. The Galaxy S20+ BTS Edition continues to be sold online by Samsung UK for £1,049. The company released The Sero in the UK at the beginning of June and the TV is presently available online for £1,599.

Titanium Galaxy Watch 3 price and release date for Europe confirmed

Unlike Samsung’s previous smartwatches that feature an aluminum or stainless steel casing, the latest Galaxy Watch 3 offers only one choice of materials, namely stainless steel. However, we’ve known for a while now that Samsung is also working on a Galaxy Watch 3 variant made of titanium. We exclusively confirmed its existence back in June and after Samsung had teased it briefly at Galaxy Unpacked 2020, the company has now quietly introduced the titanium Galaxy Watch 3 in Europe.

More specifically, Samsung Germany just took the wraps off the so-called Galaxy Watch 3 Titan earlier today and revealed the product’s release date and price. The titanium Galaxy Watch 3 will be available in Germany from Samsung’s online shop beginning September 18. The wearable is launching in only one color option, Mystic Black, and prospective buyers are looking at a 633 euro price tag.

Judging by the specs revealed through the recent announcement, the titanium Galaxy Watch 3 is based on the 45mm model and there’s no indication of a 41mm titanium variant being planned for release. Spec-wise the titanium model is identical to the standard one but it’s attached to a wristband made of stainless steel as opposed to leather. As a quick reminder, you can use a variety of wristbands with the standard Galaxy Watch 3.

Samsung hasn’t revealed any details regarding the titanium model’s ruggedness but it should technically be more resilient than the stainless steel variant. However, according to the text engraved on the back of the watch, it’s MIL-STD-810G-compliant, it has an IP68 rating, and features Gorilla Glass DX, same as the standard variant.

Galaxy S21/S30 Ultra concept hypes up Samsung’s new camera tech

With Samsung done with all of its flagship smartphone launches for 2020, we can now start looking towards the future. The next round of flagships from Samsung will bring us the Galaxy S21/S30. Reports suggest that the company will launch three models this time around as well with the Ultra being at the very top of the range.

There are all sorts of theories floating around for Samsung’s next flagship smartphones. We’ve worked with the very talented Concept Creator to visualise just what the Galaxy S21/S30 Ultra could look like, particularly if it were to incorporate a new camera tech breakthrough from Samsung.

Galaxy S21/S30 Ultra could have an under-display camera

Samsung may not make significant changes to the design of its next flagship smartphone, at least as far as the core industrial design is concerned. However, it’s possible that the new camera housing it introduced with the Galaxy Note 20 series and also used for the Galaxy Z Fold 2 will make its way to the next flagship lineup.

Given the autofocus issues that customers have experienced with the Galaxy S20 Ultra, Samsung will likely opt for a laser autofocus module. It may look exactly the same on the back as it does on the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. So we can expect the design to be quite familiar with some minor refinements for the fit and finish.

This Galaxy S21 Ultra concept gives us an idea of what the device might look like if Samsung introduced a major camera tech breakthrough next year. There have been reports that Samsung is going to use an under-display selfie camera for the Galaxy S21. Samsung did hint about adopting no-notch displays two years ago when it introduced the different types of bezel-less displays it planned to use in the future.

The Ultra variant could very well be the first Samsung device to feature this tech. Using an under-display camera would enable Samsung to offer a completely bezel-less display with no cutout for the camera. That really would be the dream come true for many Samsung fans as it’s something they have been looking forward to.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. We’ll be keeping a close eye on all developments related to the Galaxy S21/S30 series. So keep checking SamMobile for all the latest info on Samsung’s next flagship lineup.

Samsung Premiere line launches with world’s first 4K HDR10+ projector

Samsung today launched The Premiere, a series of 4K Ultra Short Throw (UST) laser projectors and the world’s first such devices with HDR10+ certification. The series consists of the 130-inch LSP9T and the 120-inch LSP7T, both of which offer 4K resolution support, albeit only the former comes with HDR10+. What such a high-definition dynamic range means in the context of projectors is that you’re looking at one quite literally shining beacon of excellence that can deliver up to 2,800 ANSI lumens of brightness.

Further adding to the cinemaphile appeal is The Premiere’s Filmmaker Mode meant to enable a full-fledged home cinema experience. Samsung’s own Smart TV platform is part of the package, meaning you can install a wide range of video streaming and other apps to the newly introduced devices. Naturally, users will also be able to connect The Premiere to their smartphones and tablets.

Another important milestone for Samsung’s Lifestyle portfolio

Today’s launch marks another important milestone in Samsung’s efforts to drive HDR10+ adoption as projectors are a pretty tricky thing to optimize for premium viewing experiences, at least in the consumer electronics space. The lineup itself is part of Samsung’s Lifestyle portfolio whose main goal is delivering a high-end blend of form and function, which is something it’s been doing for over four years now.

Speaking of high-end, the series’ international prices are yet to be determined but we can confirm Dutch MSRPs which, by themselves, are a pretty good indicator of what to expect in Europe. The LSP9T has a suggested price of €6,499, whereas the LSP7T is intended to go for €3,499. For added context, that amounts to about $7,700 and $4,150, respectively. So far the only official word regarding availability is that The Premiere is scheduled to be released this fall in Europe, South Korea, and the United States. Other regions will follow by this year’s holiday season.

New Samsung Wireless Charger Trio will charge three devices for 99 euro

Many Samsung mobile devices support wireless charging and if you tend to use a few of them, you might be interested in a charger that allows you to wirelessly charge them simultaneously. Samsung has already released a Wireless Charger Duo, which as the name suggests, let you charge two devices at the same time.

The company is now offering more convenience with the new Samsung Wireless Charger Trio. The new wireless charger is capable of charging three devices simultaneously.

Samsung Wireless Charger Trio goes on sale soon

An earlier leak had already revealed that Samsung was going to launch a new wireless charger this month. The company officially unveiled the Wireless Charger Trio today during its Life Unstoppable virtual event.

Samsung hasn’t revealed the full tech specs of the new charger but what’s evident from the images that it has released is that it will be able to charge three devices at the same time. The charging pad is large enough that you can place a Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, the Galaxy Watch 3 and the Galaxy Buds Live on it side by side.

Samsung supports the Qi wireless charging standard and that means this charger can be used to charge up any device that supports the standard, not necessarily the latest in mobile technology from Samsung.

The new Wireless Charger Trio is going to be available for purchase in the near future. It’s going to cost 99 euro.
