Samsung starts mass production of chips based on 2nd Generation 14nm FinFET process

Samsung Electronics has announced today that it has started mass production of advanced logic chips utilizing its 14nm Low-Power Plus process on the 2nd generation of its 14nm FinFET process technology. The Exynos 7 Octa processor announced in Q1 last year was built on the industry’s first 14nm Low-Power Early process, with this second-generation 14nm LPP process Samsung promises “unparalleled performance and power efficiency” for the Exynos 8 Octa processor as well as many of its foundry customers such as Qualcomm. It mentions that Qualcomm’s flagship chip, the Snapdragon 820, uses Samsung’s new 14nm LPP process and will arrive in consumer devices in the first half of 2016.

Samsung’s new 14nm LPP process provides up to 15% higher speed and 15% reduction in power consumption as compared with the 14nm LPE process, the gains have been made through improvements in the transistor structure and process optimization. Scaling limitations are overcome by using fully depleted FinFET transistors to enhance manufacturing capabilities.

Enable Auto HR on the Gear S2

You may look at the Gear S2 in all its well-designed beauty and think, “it can’t get any better than this,” but you’d be wrong. Specifically, you’d be wrong about the Gear S2: it can get better than its beautiful design. Why? Well, buried within the Gear S2 is a feature that all other smartwatch makers should emulate. It lies within Samsung’s own pre-installed smartwatch apps, and it’s called Auto HR (or Auto Heart Rate).

What is Auto HR? It is a feature within Samsung’s own pre-installed apps that allows you to set up the frequency with which the device monitors and records your heart rate automatically (without you touching the screen for each heart rate monitoring event). Unlike smartwatches of the past (and the present) that still rely on you to monitor your heart rate manually, Samsung’s Gear S2 allows you to “set it and forget it” when it comes to heart rate monitoring: you need set it once and let Auto HR do it’s thing.

Here’s how to set up Auto HR on your Gear S2:

  • Find Samsung’s S-Health app in your apps list and select it.
  • Once inside S-Health, scroll over until you see S-Health settings. Select the icon beneath the word (“settings”).
  • You’ll see Auto HR beneath “step target” and above “Alert.” Select it to set up your Auto HR.
  • As for frequency, you can choose between three options: 1) Frequent, 2) Moderate, and 3) Off. Select between frequent and moderate.
  • Once you make your decision, swipe your way out of the app or press the bottom side button to return to your watch face. That’s it!

Now, your Gear S2 will monitor your heart rate based on your frequency selection. You can still do it yourself, but it’ll be easier to keep up your exercise without frequently checking your wrist or tapping on the display when you’re active.

Samsung has a plethora of phones and tablets in its lineup, and regularly releases firmware updates for various devices. These can include major updates, which bring a newer version of the OS to a particular device, or minor ones that improve performance and stability and fix bugs. Software updates for Samsung devices roll out in various regions every day, and you can find out which firmware updates were pushed out by the company over the last 24 hours through our firmware list.

As usual, you can download each of these firmware from our firmware section (simply enter your device’s model number to view all firmware for that device) in order to update to a new firmware manually, or as a means to return to your phone or tablet’s stock software.

Samsung will rely more on semiconductor business as main income source

While the Galaxy devices are a marvel of the tech world it looks like Samsung Electronics won’t be relying on them to stay afloat. The South Korean giant is making a solid profit from the sale of smart TVs and smartphones but those sales are eclipsed by its semiconductor business which has been bagging big clients lately in the auto industry such as Audi. This year Samsung will be targeting mobile business-to-business (B2B) solutions and system semiconductors although its semiconductor business is forecasted to drop in sales.

There are three major players in the semiconductor industry which Samsung has to compete with: Intel, TSMC and GlobalFoundries, and this competition could easily be spotted a mile away when Apple used both Samsung’s chips as well as TSMC’s chips in the iPhone 6s. It makes sense that Samsung would avoid relying on its smartphone business seeing how strong competition is, particularly in the Asian market with companies such as Huawei and Xiaomi.

Another growing area in Samsung’s business seems to be the display branch which has gotten a lot more attention from the South Korean company. A clear indicator of Samsung’s shift in business strategy is their focus: Whereas in 2013 the company was focusing mostly on the mobile world, that branch slowly declined only to be replaced by the semiconductor and display branches.

Samsung Galaxy J1 2016 with Super AMOLED display launched quietly in Dubai

We knew a 2016 iteration of the Galaxy J1 was in the works, and it looks like Samsung has decided the device doesn’t need any formal announcement. The Galaxy J1 2016 is already available at retail stores in Dubai; as leaks had revealed, the phone comes with specs that are slightly better than the original Galaxy J1, which we had found to be an extremely poor smartphone for the asking price. The price is roughly the same for the new device – it is available for AED 499 in the country, which translates to around $135.

The biggest upgrade on the Galaxy J1 2016 seems to be the display – it’s a Super AMOLED display this time around, though the resolution is still 800×480 pixels. The screen size is 4.5 inches, meaning this might not be the sharpest panel out there, though the colors and contrast should be considerably better. Under the hood, there’s an Exynos 3475 processor clocked at 1.3GHz along with 1GB of RAM (the original Galaxy J1 had 512MB/768MB RAM models). The cameras are a 5-megapixel and 2-megapixel rear and front pair, and the phone comes with 8GB of expandable storage, 4G connectivity, and a 2,050 mAh battery.

In addition to the Super AMOLED display, Android 5.1.1 Lollipop with Samsung’s latest TouchWiz UX should also make for an improved experience. The design might not be to everyone’s liking, however, especially if they opt for the gold version. Samsung is using a two-tone color at the front of the phone, so the gold version is black above the display and gold below it. If you don’t like that, the black color option is what you will have to settle for if you intend to spend your cash on the Galaxy J1 2016.

There is no word on when the Galaxy J1 2016 will come to other markets, but we can expect countries like India and Bangladesh to get it sometime in the near future. At $135, the device comes uncomfortably close to the Galaxy On5 that is available in India, and we can expect a few price cuts to take place soon after launch. We’ll do our best to get hold of a unit and subject it to a review; it will hopefully turn out to be a much improved successor to the Galaxy J1 instead of being yet another low-end Android phone from the world’s largest smartphone manufacturer.

Samsung launches exclusive themes for its new Galaxy A (2016) line-up

With a new phone come new accessoires. And also, apparently, new themes, as Samsung has launched a collection of themes exclusive to its new Galaxy A (2016) line-up. Last year, Samsung launched the theme store for its TouchWiz interface together with the Galaxy S6. Since then, more and more devices have launched with this feature, though some low-end models were denied the option. Now, the recently launched 2016 Galaxy A phones are the first to get a set of exclusively designed themes.

At this moment, there are eleven themes available that cover the range between colorful and minimalistic, making sure you don’t have to walk around with the same TouchWiz design as, say, the average Galaxy S6 owner. And we’ve checked: these themes indeed only show up when accessing the store from a 2016 Galaxy A device such as the Galaxy A3 (2016), or Galaxy A5 (2016).

This is of course no guarantee these are the best looking themes to be found in the entire store, but they cost nothing and you know what they say: there’s no accounting for taste. Still, it’s good to see Samsung pushing the possibilities its themes feature and store offer.

Samsung working with local startups in Silicon Valley towards a brighter future

It’s only been four months since Samsung opened up its brand new Semiconductor headquarters in Silicon Valley and the tech company is already eyeing various local startups in search for some talented developers. A recent report from the Korea Herald reveals what Samsung has been up to in recent months and it shows that the South Korean giant has more interest in the region than simple development. If you remember six months ago the Silicon Valley companies took Samsung’s side in the Apple lawsuit so to give back to the community, Samsung is offering its partnership to startups with potential. David Eun, President and Head of the Center had a few words to share about Samsung’s cooperation with local companies:

As part of Samsung, a start-up will still have freedom and control, while having great access to decision-makers and collaborations with wide distribution and marketing sources. Working with Samsung can be very attractive.

Famous rapper Jay-Z who happens to own Tidal, a small music streaming service, took a visit to Samsung’s Silicon Valley building a while back so this further suggests that Samsung’s presence in the region is more inclined towards business rather than manufacturing but that’s not to say that Samsung isn’t working hard in Silicon Valley. They are working on the research and development of their chip business as well as storage systems and the Internet of Things.

Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 edge and Galaxy S7 edge+ might launch at the same time

We have been hearing a lot about how the Galaxy S7 will be offered in varying screen sizes, and one of the many rumors had said that the Galaxy S7 edge+ could launch at the same time as the Galaxy S7 edge. Recent leaks have suggested the Edge variant would be larger than the regular S7, but popular leakster Evleaks is offering evidence today that Samsung will launch all three models together.

Evleaks has published an image that shows what could be the official logos for the three devices (and maybe the full image has the phones above the names as well?). Given his track record, this can be taken as a huge indication of the fact that Samsung will go from launching two flagships at the same time to three, and it also supports the recent appearance of the Galaxy S7 edge on a benchmark with a 5.1-inch display. Launching a Galaxy S7 edge+ along with the smaller S7 edge could mean Samsung wants to focus all efforts on the Galaxy Note in the second half of the year, unless the company intends to make a few variants of the Note 6 as well.

We have continually been pointing out that all of these leaks should be taken with a pinch of salt, especially since they could be based on prototypes that won’t get the green light for release, but it would certainly be interesting to see Samsung coming out with three flagships at the same time. It’s great for those who like numerous screen size options, but the Korean giant might find itself sitting on unsold inventory if there isn’t enough consumer demand for all three S7 flagships.
