Samsung teases Gear S3 announcement at IFA 2016

The Gear S2 has had a good run as the best all-round smartwatch on the market, and it is now time for a successor. We had already revealed that the Gear S3 will make an official appearance at IFA and Samsung has now sent out invites for the upcoming watch’s announcement, set to take place on September 1 (a day before IFA officially kicks off). The invite doesn’t mention a watch, but the clock hands are a dead giveaway.

The Gear S3 will keep the round design and the rotary bezel of its predecessor, but this time, Samsung will apparently be launching three different variants of the watch – a Gear S3 Classic, a Gear S3 Frontier, and a Gear S3 Classic. Samsung is building in a lot of new features for fitness freaks; the watch will come with an altimeter, a barometer, a speedometer, and an integrated GPS (just like the Gear Fit 2). The watch is codenamed Solis and will hopefully have a bigger screen variant for those who found the Gear S2 to be a tad too small, although we’re guessing Samsung will stick to the original screen size given most of the functionality of the watch can be handled using the bezel ring.

Rumors suggest Samsung will also unveil the Galaxy Tab S3 at IFA. It’s certainly time for a refresh as the Tab S2 was announced in July last year, so we will probably see the Super AMOLED display-toting tablet alongside the Gear S3 next month.

Galaxy A8 (2016) benchmarked again, gets Bluetooth certification

The Galaxy A8 is due for an update and there’s enough evidence to suggest that the company is putting the final touches on the Galaxy A8 (2016). It has previously been spotted on GFXBench where some specifications of the Galaxy A8 (2016) SM-A810 were revealed and the handset has surfaced once again on the benchmarking website. It has also received its Bluetooth certification.

The latest benchmark results show that the SM-A810F features a 2.1GHz Exynos 7420 processor coupled with 3GB of RAM, which basically means that it’s going to be a powerful mid-range handset. The handset is expected to come with 32GB internal storage as well as a 5.7-inch display. Specifications revealed previously include a 16-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel front camera as well as Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. The Bluetooth certification is merely an indicator that all of the necessary processes are being completed before this handset is launched, this is normally taken as an indication of a launch that’s just around the corner. Samsung is yet to confirm when it’s going to launch the Galaxy A8 (2016) and how much it’s going to cost.

Samsung has a plethora of phones and tablets in its lineup and regularly releases firmware updates for various devices. These can include major updates, which bring a newer version of the OS to a particular device, or minor ones that improve performance and stability and fix bugs. Software updates for Samsung devices roll out in various regions every day, and you can find out which firmware updates were pushed out by the company over the last 24 hours through our firmware list.

As usual, you can download each of these firmware from our firmware section (simply enter your device’s model number to view all firmware for that device) in order to update to a new firmware manually, or as a means to return to your phone or tablet’s stock software.

[Poll] How would you feel if Samsung didn’t include a 3.5mm audio jack on the Galaxy S8?

If you’ve been following news from the technology industry recently, I’m sure you’re aware of Apple’s rumored decision to remove the traditional 3.5mm audio jack from its upcoming iPhone 7. Instead, it will release a handful of headphones in partnership with Beats that have been specifically designed to work with its homegrown Lightning connector. The Cupertino company is also expected to take the wraps off a Lightning to 3.5mm adapter, which will enable customers to use their own earphones with the handset.

What we’d love to know how you’d feel if Samsung followed in Apple’s footsteps by dropping the 3.5mm audio plugin from the Galaxy S8 in favor of the flurry of USB Type-C headsets that are set to hit the market from leading manufacturers, including Audio-Technica, Beats, Bowers & Wilkins, Sennheiser, and Sony. Let us know your thoughts by selecting one of the options from the poll below, and by leaving a more detailed comment in the section at the bottom of this page.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

Official video details features and specs of the Samsung Z2

The Samsung Z2 hasn’t been made official yet, but it made a near-official appearance at Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7 launch event in South Africa. With firmware for the device available online, we’re expecting the Z2 to be announced any day now; we pretty much know everything about the handset already, and we have now gained access to an official video that showcases all of the Z2′s highlight features and some of its specs.

The Z2 is the first Tizen handset to feature 4G LTE support, and like all of Samsung’s recent budget handsets, it will come with the Ultra Data Saving Mode feature to help users save on data costs. The My Money Transfer app will be available exclusively for Indian users and allow them to transfer money to others in a few simple steps, as we had exclusively detailed. The video reveals that Samsung has also improved on a feature everyone takes for granted on smartphones these days – the flashlight/torch option on the phone will actually let you adjust the flashlight’s brightness.

The video doesn’t list all of the phone’s specs, but it does confirm that it will be powered by a 1.5GHz quad-core processor and feature a 5-megapixel rear camera. As we had exclusively reported, the phone will also have a 3.97-inch WVGA display, 1GB of RAM, a VGA front camera, 8GB of internal storage, and a 1,500 mAh battery. The Z2 will run Tizen 2.4 out of the box.

Galaxy Note 7 release delayed in Russia and Ukraine

Samsung appears to have underestimated demand for the Galaxy Note 7 because it’s having to manage supply following high pre-order demand. The company has already decided to delay the Galaxy Note 7 release in Malaysia as well as the Netherlands, where the handset hasn’t even gone on pre-order yet, and now Samsung has confirmed that it’s doing the same for Russia and Ukraine. It won’t be surprising if the delay is expanded to additional markets across Europe

The Galaxy Note 7 was supposed to be launched in Russia on September 2 but Samsung has said that due to unprecedented demand for its latest flagship, it’s delaying the release to September 16. The wait will be longer for customers in Ukraine where the handset was supposed to go on pre-order come August 16. Pre-orders will now be opened on September 7 with shipments starting September 30. It’s unfortunate for customers in these markets as they will now have to wait longer to get their hands on one of the best Note flagships that Samsung has ever created.

Samsung awarded contract to manufacture NVIDIA’s next-generation GPUs

According to a new report published by South Korea’s Chosun Biz newspaper, Samsung has been awarded a contract manufacturing order to produce NVIDIA’s latest range of GPU products. Unfortunately, the publication was unable to specify the value of the order.

However, it was able to deduce that the next-generation GPUs will be manufactured using Samsung’s revolutionary 14-nanometre process. Operations are expected to commence before the end of this year, with products hitting the shelves within the first quarter of 2017.
