Boost and Virgin Mobile reveal availability dates for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge

US-based prepaid operators Boost and Virgin Mobile have today announced the dates the eagerly-awaited Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge are set to hit their networks. The former will be the first carrier to offer the handsets from Friday, March 11, whilst the latter will stock it a week later on Friday, March 18.

Unfortunately, neither Boost or Virgin have revealed any pricing details as of yet. However, Boost is holding a pretty nifty promotion which dangles up to a 50% saving on your current bill when you switch to its network from either AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon — so if you’re counting down the days until you pick up a Galaxy S7, it’s certainly something to bare in mind.

Samsung SM-T585 touted to be a mid-ranged 10-inch tablet

According to a benchmark listing, Samsung is gearing up for the release of a new 10-inch mid-range tablet. The tablet is revealed to be bearing model number SM-T585, which doesn’t tell us a lot about the device itself. It’s still not known as to whether the SM-T585 will belong to the Galaxy Tab A or the Galaxy Tab E series.

The GFXBench listing reveals that the tablet is packing a 10-inch 1920 x 1200 resolution display, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of onboard storage (expandable via microSD), an 8-megapixel rear camera, a 2-megapixel front camera and Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. It is further believed that this large sized tablet is packing a 1.7 GHz octa-core Exynos 7870 chipset underneath while 4G LTE support is also said to be on board.

It’s important to note that the tablet here doesn’t have an OLED display but a standard TFT LCD panel, which suggests that this is a budget or a mid-ranged offering even this doesn’t tell us if the device will belong to the Galaxy Tab A or the Galaxy Tab E series. It’s unclear at this point when Samsung intends to launch this tablet.

The ‘liquid cooling’ system from the Galaxy S7 explained

The Samsung Galaxy S7 and the S7 edge were said to be featuring liquid cooling technology to get rid of any unnecessary overheating issues. This was a precautionary measure taken by the Korean manufacturer knowing fully well about the Snapdragon 810 last year. This technology, however, is not what we think it is. In Samsung’s words, this is not a liquid cooling mechanism but merely a “thermal spreader“.

The term suggests that there might actually be some tiny traces of liquid, but not enough to be seen by the human eye. A teardown by YouTube user JerryRigEverything revealed this mechanism inside, where Samsung is using a copper pipe to let the liquid and vapor pass through.

The liquid, in this case, is either water or ethylene glycol which is passed through an evaporator leading up to the CPU or GPU. Being exposed to the heat generated by the CPU/GPU, this liquid then turns into vapor and makes its way to a diffusion plate (radiator). Eventually, this vapor turns itself back into liquid form and makes its way to the evaporator again. This is a constant process and ensures that the heat is evenly distributed and not concentrated towards a particular area.

Samsung confirms Android Marshmallow update for Galaxy Tab A is in the works

The Galaxy Tab A, which was announced almost an year ago, is currently running Android 5.0.2 (Lollipop). We did report six months back that the Galaxy Tab A could receive the Android 6.0 update, but there was no official confirmation about it. However, Samsung has now revealed that it does plan to release Android 6.0 update for its mid-range tablet offering.

Samsung UK’s support centre has mentioned through Twitter to one of our regular readers that Marshmallow update for the Galaxy Tab A is under development. However, the company did not reveal any information regarding the update’s release time frame. It’s a good news for Galaxy Tab A owners, and gives them a reason to hold on to their tablet. Do you think Samsung’s update policy is improving?

Thanks for the tip, Sanay!

Check out how the Galaxy S7′s autofocus technology compares to the Canon 70D’s

We’ve already reported that the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge both have fantastic cameras that are capable of blowing the iPhone 6s out of the water in terms of quality, and we’ve shared a short movie highlighting just how great the shooter’s video capturing functionality is, but now we’re bringing you a comparison of the 12-megapixel camera’s Autofocus technology.

You may or may not be aware that the Galaxy S7 is the first smartphone on the market to feature a Dual Pixel autofocus (AF) system, which was previously only adopted for use on DSLR’s. Canon has always been referred to as the pioneer of the AF industry, so it comes as no surprize to learn that a Taiwan-based YouTuber decided to put Samsung’s offering against the best-selling Canon 70D DSLR camera, and the results, which are pretty astonishing, can be seen below:

This is how Samsung made Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge water-resistant

The Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge are barely thicker than their predecessors, but Samsung has been able to cram in larger batteries and water-resistance. Interestingly, the company managed to keep them water-resistant without using plastic flaps to protect the headphone jack and the microUSB port from water seepage. So, how did Samsung succeed in making these devices water-resistane?

YouTuber JerryRigEverything took apart his Galaxy S7 to explain how Samsung made it water-resistant. Basically, the South Korean smartphone giant used rubber seals and gaskets to protect certain weak spots like the headphone jack, the power button, and the SIM card tray. Samsung has also used a lot of glue and tape to ensure that internal components stay in place, away from liquids or moisture.

The company’s solution for protecting the loudspeaker from water seepage is quite interesting. Engineers have used a fine mesh screen over the loudspeaker, which uses surface tension to let air (hence, sound) pass through it but not water. However, you should note that all these engineering works till a certain extent – 1.5 meters of water for up to 30 minutes – after which these measures give in.

There are a couple of white-colored water-detection stickers inside these devices. They turn pink once water (or any other liquid, steam, or sweat for that matter) enters the innards, which allows Samsung to deny warranty. If you want to know more about Samsung’s engineering techniques to keep its latest flagship smartphones water-resistant, go ahead and watch the full video that’s embedded below.

Samsung Pay makes a loss of $16.8 million in 2015

Samsung Pay made a net loss of 2.6 billion KRW ($16.8 million) during 2015, which was its first year under Samsung. However, the South Korean smartphone giant is treating this as an investment that will provide competitive advantage over its rivals in the smartphone segment.

According to Samsung’s audit report for 2015, Samsung Pay recorded sales of $4.12 million and a net loss of $16.8 million. Its debt and net worth were $23.6 million and $10.5 million, respectively. Samsung bought LoopPay (now Samsung Pay) for $229 million in February 2015, but it is close to ‘failing grade’ when seen solely from its business performance.

Samsung says that Samsung Pay should be observed differently from other normal businesses since it provides its smartphones like the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge competitive advantage and differentiation over rivals’ offerings. Currently, the company’s mobile payments solution isn’t charging any fee to merchants for using its service.

Experts believe that Samsung wants to learn spending habits of its consumers through Samsung Pay, which is also the case with mobile payment solutions from Apple, Google, LG, and others. Samsung can apply Big Data to see consumer tendency on spending and purchasing, and apply it to its future marketing.

Samsung extends its lead in the NAND flash storage market

Samsung continued to extend its market share in the NAND flash storage market, expanding the lead it has against its rivals. According to the data from DRAMeXchange, the South Korean electronics giant managed to acquire 33.8 percent of market share during Q4, 2015.

Samsung Electronics ranked first in the NAND flash market, while Toshiba stood second with a market share of 18.6 percent during the last quarter of last year. SanDisk, with a market share of 15.8 percent, stood third. Micron Technology Inc. stood fourth in the NAND flash market with a market share of 13.9 percent. SK Hynix Inc. with a market share of 10.1 percent and Intel with market share of 8 percent, ranked fifth and sixth, respectively.

Even though Toshiba introduced NAND flash technology in 1989, its current market share is less than half of Samsung’s. In the third quarter of 2015, Samsung had a market share of 31.5 percent and Toshiba had a market share of 20.5 percent. However, Samsung’s sales grew 4.2 percent, while Toshiba’s sales dropped by 11.3 percent during Q4, 2015.

In its latest report, DRAMeXchange said, “The NAND flash market showed a minus growth of 2.3 percent due to the depression in the mobile demand industry. However, Samsung was one of the few manufacturers that experienced revenue growth in the fourth quarter of 2015. Other competitors are now facing pressures of the fall in unit prices and technology advance bottlenecks.
