Samsung’s cloud-based tool, NetLiner, to boost 5G operator profits in USA

Zhilabs, the network analytics company that was acquired by Samsung back in 2018, has just announced NetLiner; a new product designed to give 5G operators in the USA the best set of automated tools for analyzing and managing their networks, all the while boosting profits and quality of services (QoS).

Instead of relying on big data analytics, NetLiner leverages AI to collect information across all parts of a network. The cloud-based automated system promises to boost returns on 5G network investments by giving operators vital information on how they can improve Net Promoter Scores (NPS) and deliver pro-active customer support.

NetLiner offers deep-visibility troubleshooting, performance predictions, as well as latency and bandwidth performance monitoring in Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) scenarios. With advanced network insights at their disposal, operators can not only improve their customers’ experience but also create new revenue streams to increase 5G profitability.

Samsung has revealed that Zhilabs is already collaborating with ‘leading Tier-1 operators’ to apply the NetLiner automated system, but it didn’t name any names. Nevertheless, Samsung has been helping various US-based operators on their 5G journeys, including Verizon Wireless, Sprint, and U.S. Cellular. Earlier this year, the company also acquired TeleWorld Solutions in anticipation of increasingly-high demand for 5G network solutions in the USA.

Galaxy M31 to launch online in Malaysia on March 27

The Galaxy M31 is scheduled to go on sale in Malaysia on March 27, according to TechNave. Even though this is a Galaxy M smartphone, it’s already listed for sale offline on Samsung’s Malaysian portal. But as we all know, the company’s Experience Stores nationwide have been temporarily shut down until March 31. Prospective buyers should be able to acquire the phone online from March 27 via Samsung’s official website and through retail partner Lazada.

The Galaxy M31 will cost RM 1,099 ($248) in Malaysia, but Lazada has prepared a limited-time Birthday Sale, bringing the launch price down to RM 799 ($180). You’ll have to act quickly to take advantage of this offer, as it will run from 12 AM to 2 AM on March 27.

Looking for a good budget smartphone? This could be it

Arriving in black, blue, and red, the Galaxy M31 is a compelling budget smartphone. We’ve talked about its strengths and weaknesses to great lengths in our review, so make sure you check that out if you want to learn more about the device before committing to a purchase. In short, the Galaxy M31 offers an excellent Super AMOLED display, great autonomy thanks to its generous 6,000mAh battery, and good performance in games and day-to-day tasks.

Another point in its favor is that it ships with 6GB of RAM as standard. But unlike in India, where both the 64GB and 128GB configurations were released a few weeks ago, customers in Malaysia will only get to buy the 128GB model. The 64GB model may arrive at a later date, but only time will tell.

Best Galaxy S20 features will be out soon for the Galaxy S10 and Note 10

Samsung recently confirmed that it’s working on One UI 2.1 for existing flagships like the Galaxy S10 and the Galaxy Note 10. This wasn’t surprising as Samsung’s new flagship series come with the latest iteration of One UI that eventually makes its way to other devices as well.

However, it seems that Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10 owners may not have to wait until One UI 2.1 is released to get the new features that are part and parcel of this update. Samsung today confirmed that it’s going to bring all of the best Galaxy S20 features to the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10 soon.

Galaxy S20’s best features coming to existing flagships

Samsung was always going to bring the Galaxy S20’s best features to other devices, it was only a matter of when it got around to doing that. Samsung Netherlands sent out a press release today to confirm that all of the best Galaxy S20 features will be released for the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10 via a software update at the end of this month.

The features will include Single Take, a new camera mode that Samsung introduced with the Galaxy S20. It has become quite popular since it lets you effortlessly capture the perfect moment. Single Take can capture a mix of ten photos and four videos so you can choose which ones you’d want to keep and share, instead of having to decide whether to take a photo or record a video of the moment.

Pro Mode for Video will also be coming to existing flagships. It will allow you to adjust shutter speed, ISO and exposure for videos. The ability to switch between the front and rear cameras while a video is recording will also be brought over. This will be a very useful feature for those who tend to vlog with their smartphones.

This software update will bring some of the other best Galaxy S20 features as well. Quick Crop will let you easily cut images exactly to the size you want. Clean View will bring all photos of the same subject together automatically while Bixby Integration will let you create albums with voice commands.

Quick Share, Samsung’s AirDrop alternative, is headed to the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10 as well. It lets you share photos, videos and large files directly with multiple people around you. Music Share will enable you to share your phone’s Bluetooth connection to a speaker so that you don’t have to disconnect before your friends can play music. They can just piggyback off of your phone’s Bluetooth connection to the speaker.

It seems Samsung is doing the same thing it did last year when it rolled out the Galaxy Note 10’s features to the Galaxy S10. The Galaxy Note 10 came with One UI 1.5 yet all of its features were released for the Galaxy S10 while it was still on One UI 1.1 through a software update. So while One UI 2.1 will arrive for existing flagships in due course, we’ll be able to take advantage of all of these best Galaxy S20 features on our 2019 flagships in just about a week from now.

Samsung reportedly looking to hire a record number of workers for foundry

The future of Samsung’s foundry business looks somewhat uncertain given recent events. But despite revising its expectations amid the coronavirus pandemic, and even though the company may lose foundry market share in Q1, new reports from Yonhap News Agency claim that Samsung Electronics is looking to hire a record number of experienced workers for its semiconductor arm.

Specifically, Samsung wants to get new employees on-board in 51 careers for its Device Solutions division, comprising its memory chip, foundry, and system LSI businesses. In the meantime, Samsung told its employees to work from home due to coronavirus concerns.

Samsung Electronics is standing out among 500 other major corporations in South Korea. A significant portion of these firms (one-fourth to be more precise) is reportedly cutting back on its workforce with no plans to hire new personnel throughout the first half of the year. But while some businesses are cutting back on their activities in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, Samsung is seemingly doing the opposite.

Samsung’s apparent decision to hire a record number of employees strongly indicates that the company hasn’t given up on its ambitions to remain a semiconductor giant. A year ago, Samsung confirmed its plans to invest a whopping $115 billion in logic chip development by 2030. This year, Samsung’s Device Solutions division will focus more on developing technologies for its next-gen chip production.

Disney Plus is coming to your Samsung Smart TV in the UK next week

Samsung has just announced that Disney Plus (stylized as Disney+) is going to launch in the UK next week on March 24. Will the streaming service be available on your Samsung Smart TV? It sure will, as long as you own a 2016 or later model.

Disney Plus is an on-demand streaming service from The Walt Disney Company, offering ad-free access to a variety of series, films, and documentaries in up to 4K resolution with HDR support. Popular entertainment brands that are a part of the service include Star Wars, Pixar, Marvel, National Geographic, and more. Disney Plus is also the only streaming service that lets you watch The Mandalorian in the UK, and elsewhere, so if you’re a fan of the Star Wars universe, it’s the place to be.

Initially planned to launch in the UK on March 21, the release has been pushed back a few days, but the wait is almost over. Starting next week, Samsung Smart TV owners will be able to sign up for a free seven-day trial to the streaming service, after which they can continue their subscription in exchange for £5.99 a month or £59.99 a year.

Select Samsung Smart TV models come pre-installed with the Disney Plus app. If you can’t find the app, you should be able to download it from the store. And don’t forget that TV models compatible with Bixby will allow you to launch the service by issuing voice commands.

Coronavirus may dent Samsung’s global foundry market share in Q1

The coronavirus pandemic is causing havoc for all industries across the globe so it wouldn’t be surprising to see Samsung taking a hit because of it as well. The company has already had to shut down a smartphone factory in South Korea multiple times due to confirmed infection cases.

A new report predicts that Samsung’s market share in the global foundry industry is going to drop in the first quarter of this year compared to the last quarter of 2019. This prediction covers the January-March 2020 period for Samsung’s foundry business.

Samsung’s foundry businesses faces headwinds

Industry tracker TrendForce reports that Samsung’s foundry business logged an estimated 15.9 percent market share in the first quarter of this year, with revenues of $2.9 billion, in the quarter ending March 2020. If the estimate is accurate, Samsung’s global foundry market share will be down almost two percentage points compared to the preceding quarter.

“The pandemic has made a serious impact on South Korea, whose domestic market demand may be diminished as a result,” the report says, adding that “This is projected to affect Samsung’s 2020 revenue performance.” Samsung also revised its own business expectations for the year, acknowledging that its main operations will be affected by the global outbreak.

Samsung has been extremely focused on expanding its foundry business over the past few years. The company sees it as a growth driver for the future and it has been able to bring some key new clients onboard. Samsung is making PC CPUs for Intel in addition to making AI chips for China’s Baidu.

One UI 2.1 for Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10 could arrive next month

When a new Galaxy S or Note flagship arrives, it comes with a newer version of Samsung’s software than preceding flagships. For example, the Galaxy S10 series introduced One UI 1.1 while the Galaxy S9 and Note 9 were running One UI 1.0, and the Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+ introduced One UI 1.5 while the Galaxy S10 was running One UI 1.1. Similarly, the Galaxy S20, S20+, and S20 Ultra come with One UI 2.1 out of the box while the Galaxy S10, Note 10, Galaxy S9, and Galaxy Note 9 are all running One UI 2.0 at this moment.

And, traditionally, users of those older flagships would have to wait until the next major Android update before their device would receive the updated version of One UI. That is not the case this time around. Samsung recently revealed that an update to One UI 2.1 is in the works for the Galaxy S and Note flagships from 2018 and 2019, and it looks like that update could arrive before the end of April. A Samsung community moderator has revealed that the company is aiming to release One UI 2.1 for at least the Galaxy S10e, S10, S10+, and S10 5G in the next three weeks.

There’s a good reason for Samsung to bring One UI 2.1 to these existing flagships as soon as it possibly can, as the usefulness of one of the best new Galaxy S20 features depends on more and more users having access to One UI 2.1. The Galaxy S20 and Z Flip come with Quick Share, a feature that allows users to quickly send across files to owners of other Galaxy device owners over a Wi-Fi connection. Quick Share is a One UI 2.1 feature, however, so without devices like the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10 running the newest version of the software, it’s more or less useless right now for anyone not owning a Galaxy S20 or Galaxy Z Flip.

One UI 2.5 will arrive with Android 11

Samsung’s community moderators have also revealed that the company is working on One UI 2.5, which will probably debut with the Galaxy Note 20 in the second half of this year. One UI 2.5 will no doubt come to the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S10, and Galaxy Note 10 as well, but only with the Android 11 update. Not a lot is known about One UI 2.5 at this time, except that it will enable the use of Google’s navigation gestures in third-party launchers, though more information is likely to show up in the future, either through Samsung’s community forums or through Galaxy Note 20 leaks that are guaranteed to happen as we get closer to the device’s launch.
