Themes Thursday: Here are this week’s hottest themes

It’s Thursday, which means that it’s time for another exciting edition of our weekly Themes Thursday segment. This week, nine new themes found their way onto the Store. Unfortunately, they’re not all worth of your attention as the majority are priced too high.

If I had to choose my favourite new theme in today’s column, it would be Purple Saturn. Although it’s priced at $1.99, the skin features a gorgeous set of icons, mused with a unique Material Design-inspired backdrop that’s guaranteed to give your smartphone a new lease of life.

SamMobile Daily Recap: October 12, 2017 — Galaxy C9 Pro, Galaxy Note 8 and more!

Deep Sea Blue Galaxy Note 8 now available in Germany

Samsung launched the Galaxy Note 8 in four colors – Midnight Black, Maple Gold, Deep Sea Blue and Orchid Grey. However, not all options are offered in every market. Customers in Germany were only able to purchase the Galaxy Note 8 in either Midnight Black or Maple Gold initially. Now, the Deep Sea Blue Galaxy Note 8 is also available for purchase in the country.

Deep Sea Blue is a new color option that Samsung introduced with the Galaxy Note 8. It seems like the natural progression of the well-received Coral Blue color that was introduced with the ill-fated Galaxy Note 7 last year. It’s a hit with fans as well. In our poll, 42 percent of the participants said they would choose Deep Sea Blue for their Galaxy Note 8.

Customers in Germany can now head over to Samsung’s online store and purchase the Deep Sea Blue Galaxy Note 8. The color option is available for both single-SIM and dual-SIM models of the handset. It’s priced at 999 euro and will begin shipping to customers on October 26.

Now that this color option is available for purchase in Germany, there’s a good chance that we might see it being offered in other markets across Europe as well. Customers in Europe shouldn’t hold out for the Orchid Grey color. Samsung has already confirmed that it won’t be offered in Europe.

3D sensor-equipped front camera might improve Galaxy S9 facial recognition

Rumors about the Galaxy S9 have now started coming in as it’s going to be the next flagship smartphone from Samsung. The latest suggests that the Galaxy S9 facial recognition functionality will be improved courtesy of a 3D sensor-equipped front camera.

The Galaxy S8 already offers facial recognition as well as iris recognition. The handset also features a fingerprint sensor at the back which many feel isn’t placed in a comfortable position. Looks like Samsung might switch things up a bit next year.

Galaxy S9 Facial Recognition

The latest whispers out of China suggest that the Galaxy S9 is going to feature a 3D sensor-equipped front camera. This will enable the handset to offer more advanced facial recognition functionality. Not only will it be more accurate, it may also offer gains in the safety and speed departments.

Naturally, this shouldn’t be taken as gospel. It’s an unverified rumor out of China. Nothing is set in stone right now as far as the Galaxy S9 is concerned.

The technology is likely going to be similar to the TrueDepth system that Apple has introduced with the iPhone X last month. However, the company’s component suppliers are struggling with yield issues which will impact the iPhone X’s supply. Samsung will have to work these issues out to ensure that it doesn’t have to deal with this for the Galaxy S9.

Enhanced Galaxy S9 facial recognition will certainly be well received. However, this possibly leaves the iris and fingerprint sensor’s future in jeopardy. If Samsung can improve facial recognition to a point where it feels comfortable ditching the fingerprint or iris scanner, the question is, should it?

Let us know what you think in the comments below.

Daily Deal: Bag yourself a pair of Active InEar headphones for 57% off

Amazon has slashed the price of Samsung’s InEar headphones by 57%, so you can currently pick up a pair for just $12.91. For those unaware, these are the same earphones that ship in the box of the firm’s smartphones, with the Galaxy Note 8 and Galaxy S8 being the only exceptions.

If you want to take advantage of this particular promotion, hit the Buy Now button below. We’d advise you to hurry, though. Like most of the deals we highlight, including Samsung’s own, Amazon only has a limited amount of inventory available and it’s safe to say it won’t be around for too long.

Samsung launches Galaxy J2 2017 in India, cuts Galaxy C9 Pro price again

Samsung has quietly launched a low-end handset in India today. The Galaxy J2 2017 Edition is now official. There aren’t a lot of differences between this and the Galaxy J2 as far as specs go, the new handset likely has an improved interface since the specs are more or less the same.

The company has also decided to cut the Galaxy C9 Pro price in India once again. It first slashed the price of this handset back in June this year.

Galaxy J2 2017 In India

Galaxy J2 2017 in India

Samsung has launched the Galaxy J2 2017 in India today. The handset has a 4.7-inch 720p AMOLED display with a quad-core processor. It also features 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage. There’s a microSD card slot, a 5-megapixel rear and 2-megapixel front camera. Additional features include dual-SIM support, 4G, Ultra Data Saving Mode and a 2,000mAh battery.

It’s a low-end handset so it’s going to be cheap. According to reports, the Galaxy J2 2017 price in India will be Rs. 7,390 or $113. It will soon be available from retailers in the country in black and gold colors.

Galaxy C9 Pro Price Cut

When the Galaxy C9 Pro was first launched, it was priced at Rs. 36,900 or $567. Samsung cut the handset’s price in June and brought it down to Rs. 31,900 or $490. The Galaxy C9 Pro price has been revised down once again to Rs. 29,900 or $460.

Samsung’s official website hasn’t been updated with the new price as yet but Amazon India has it for Rs. 29,900 now. Not bad for a handset with a 6-inch Full HD display, Snapdragon 653 processor and 6GB RAM.

This awesome tweak lets you create custom themes for your Samsung smartphone

A devoted XDA Member, who operates under the handle satishtony, has released a do-it-yourself theme engine called themeDIY, which has been designed exclusively for Samsung smartphones running an official firmware build based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow or later—so you can use it on not only the firm’s flagship smartphones, but also its entry-level offerings.

themeDIY provides you with the tools to create a unique theme for your smartphone, without rooting it. There are currently more than thirty-five overlays for system applications and ten for third-party clients. There’s also a universal selector for a Light or Dark theme, as well as a thousand pre-defined color schemes. Not bad for a free tweak, right?

How do I make a custom theme using themeDIY?

The creation process couldn’t be simpler. The first step to building a theme using themeDIY is selecting colors for system and third-party applications, decide on the necessary overlays and build it. Once that’s done, all that’s left to do is activate the theme using Trial and, if you want to keep your creation saved on your handset, disable the stock Theme Center.

themeDIY is available to download from the Play Store.

Galaxy Note 8 market share crosses 1 percent in several key markets

It has only been about a month since Samsung’s new flagship smartphone was released and already the Galaxy Note 8 market share has crossed 1 percent in many key markets. Many were initially concerned that the high price tag would deter some customers from purchasing this handset.

That doesn’t appear to be the case so far. The Galaxy Note faithful have embraced Samsung’s new flagship phablet, giving the Galaxy Note 8 just the kind of response that Samsung would have liked to see after the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco last year.

Galaxy Note 8 Market Share

The latest stats by ad network AppBrain reveal that the Galaxy Note 8 market share has crossed 1 percent in several important markets. The Galaxy Note 8 now accounts for 1 percent of all Android smartphones in the United States, it’s the 21st most popular phone in the country.

It took three weeks for the Galaxy Note 8 to achieve the same market share in Australia. After four weeks since launch, the Galaxy Note 8 now accounts for 1.7 percent of all Android devices in South Korea.

The Galaxy Note 8 market share growth has been slow in Europe even though it was released there alongside the US and South Korea. That’s probably because Europe hasn’t seen an official phablet launch since the Galaxy Note 4. Samsung didn’t launch the Galaxy Note 5 there and we all know what happened with the Galaxy Note 7.

For the sake of comparison, the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ have a combined market share of around 6 percent after being available for six months. The Galaxy Note 8 is certainly got off to a good start.

Samsung appoints new executive for Bixby 2.0 development

Samsung recently appointed a new executive for the development of Bixby in an effort to enhance the performance of the assistant, which, as The Korea Herald notes, has faced a lackluster response from the market.

The firm confirmed on Thursday that Samsung Research America’s Vice Chief Chung Eui-suk has been named the Head of its Service Intelligence Group, the team that’s responsible for developing and maintaining Bixby.

Bixby Voice Review: A story of unfulfilled potential

Eui-suk has reportedly been tasked with overseeing the development of Bixby 2.0. The next-generation version of the assistant is expected to be announced at Samsung’s annual Developer Conference on October 18.

It’s unclear what exactly is new in Bixby 2.0, though the firm’s President of Mobile DJ Koh has openly admitted that there’s a lot of room for improvement, hinting towards support for third-party services.

I’m not really a fan of Bixby Voice

As I said in our opinion post, I’m not a fan of Bixby Voice. It’s far too slow for my liking, taking an eternity to process simple requests, so I’m hoping Samsung’s found a way to address that with Bixby 2.0. Fingers crossed.

Samsung smart appliances will be synced with Kakao’s artificial intelligence platform

Samsung announced a month ago that it’s working with Kakao Corp. on artificial intelligence and voice recognition. Kakao Corp. operates the most popular mobile messager in South Korea and it has been building its own AI platform. It has been revealed today that the Kako I artificial intelligence platform will be synced with Samsung’s smart appliances to create smart services.

This integration with the Kakao I platform will enable users to control Samsung’s smart appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines and air conditioners via its KakaoTalk messenger and AI speaker Kakao Mi.

Samsung and Kakao I

The very first service that Samsung and Kakao will work on allows users to remotely turn on the air conditioner from anywhere using the aforementioned means. The compatibility will later be expanded to enable users to give simple orders to activate multiple tasks at the same time.

For example, they can configure multiple smart appliances to turn on or off at the same time in response to a command. This covers appliances like robot vacuums and air purifiers.

This is part of an expanding collaboration between Samsung and Kakao. Bixby users in South Korea will now see Kako I-based content and will be able to use its lifestyle services. Kakao I users will be able to activate services using Bixby voice commands.

Lawyers and prosecutors spar at Samsung heir’s appeal trial

Lawyers for Samsung heir Lee Jae-yong and prosecutors sparred in court today as his appeals trial started off. The Samsung Electronics vice chairman is appealing an earlier ruling which sentenced him to five years in prison for bribery. It was confirmed soon after the ruling by his legal team that he intends to challenge the verdict in a higher court.

Lee was indicted earlier this year on charges related to bribery, embezzlement, concealment of assets and others. He’s alleged to have paid bribes to South Korea’s former president Park Geun-hye. The prosecutors wanted a 12 year jail sentence so they have appealed the initial ruling as well.

Samsung Heir’s Appeal Trial

The prosecutors are pushing for a longer jail term. They cited a past ruling on a North Korean spy case as a reason to justify a longer jail term for Lee Jae-yong. His lawyers are looking to get the jail term overturned altogether.

Lee Jae-yong was present in the courtroom this morning. According to reports, he appeared relaxed while both sides argued over the admissibility of evidence. He didn’t speak at all except for when he was asked to tell his birthdate and home address to the judges.

A ruling is expected on this appeal within the next few months.

Galaxy Note FE to launch in Malaysia on October 25

Samsung has announced that it will launch the Galaxy Note FE, the refurbished variant of the ill-fated Galaxy Note 7, in Malaysia on October 25. The handset will be available to purchase from both the firm’s online and brick-and-mortar stores, as well as a number of authorized third-party retailers, for RM 2,599 ($616) outright.

Related: Galaxy Note FE Malaysia launch could take place soon

Malaysia will be the first country the Galaxy Note FE (Fan Edition) has launched in other than South Korea, leading many to believe that Samsung has plans to bring the device, which is being marketed as a piece of memorabilia, to a number of other Asian countries in the not-too-distant future, though that’s far from confirmed.

What’s the difference between the Galaxy Note 7 and the Galaxy Note FE?

The main differences between the Galaxy Note 7 and the Galaxy Note FE are that the latter ships with a 3,200mAh battery, Bixby and Galaxy Note Fan Edition branding on the rear. It continues to sport a 5.7-inch Super AMOLED display, an in-house Exynos 8890 octa-core processor and a 12MP rear-facing camera.
