Samsung reportedly designing custom Exynos chipset for Google

Lately, there has been a lot of discussion around Samsung’s Exynos chipsets and how they perform worse than their Snapdragon counterparts. Some enraged users even filed an online petition and suggested that the company should abandon the Exynos lineup altogether and switch to Qualcomm’s chipsets for its smartphones. However, the South Korean firm won’t likely abandon the Exynos lineup anytime soon.

Samsung’s next-gen flagship Exynos processor could perform better as the company is switching from Mongoose CPU cores to stock ARM CPU cores. It is even ditching ARM’s Mali GPUs in favor of AMD’s Radeon graphics. In fact, Samsung seems to have even bigger plans for its Exynos chipsets in the future. Apparently, the company is developing a custom Exynos chipset in partnership with Google. According to a new report, the custom Exynos processor could be launched by Google as soon as this year.

According to the information, the chipset will be made using Samsung’s 5nm LPE process. The Exynos octa-core processor reportedly features two Cortex-A78 CPU cores, two Cortex-A76 CPU cores, and four Cortex-A55 CPU cores. The chipset could use ARM’s unannounced Mali MP20 GPU that is based on Borr (codename based on Norse mythology) microarchitecture. Google seems to have removed Samsung’s ISP and NPU to use its own Visual Core ISP and NPU.

Reuters had reported last year that Google was poaching chip designers from Broadcom, Intel, Nvidia, and Qualcomm in an effort to create its own chipset for smartphones and servers and to reduce its reliance on vendors like Intel and Qualcomm. The company even created a team of 16 veteran engineers in Bengaluru, India, and had plans to hire hundreds in the future. However, the internet search giant may have settled for a custom Exynos chipset, at least for now.

If this report turns out to be true, there is a possibility of Google using the upcoming chipset in its future Pixel smartphones (mid-range models first?), Chrome OS-based devices, and even servers for data centers. According to ETNews, Samsung created a new ‘Custom SoC’ team inside its Device Solutions business earlier this year. The team is headed by Park Jin-pyo who worked in the Foundry ASIC team until last year.

The new team could also be making a chipset for Facebook’s AR/VR products in the Oculus lineup. Samsung’s new Custom SoC team currently has around 30 members that are grouped together from its various business arms, including Samsung LSI, but there are plans to make it much bigger in the coming years. The move to make a new team is a part of Samsung’s bigger plan to become the world’s biggest system semiconductor company by 2030.

Samsung continues to lead smartphone OLED market by a huge margin

Samsung has been the leader of the smartphone OLED panel business for several years now, and according to a new market analysis report, the company captured more than 90 percent market share during the previous quarter.

According to market research firm Stone Partners, Samsung Display shipped 61.6 million smartphone OLED panels during the first quarter of 2020 and captured 90.2 percent market share. On the other hand, rival brands EDO, Visionox, Tianma, and BOE were responsible for 4.9%, 4.5%, 0.4%, and 0.1% shipments, respectively, of the 68.3 million OLED panels that were shipped during Q1 2020.

There is a massive gap between Samsung Display and rival mobile OLED panel manufacturers. It is being reported that the South Korean firm will begin shipping more OLED panels with punch holes to other smartphone OEMs. Although such panels were limited to high-end phones until now, they will start appearing in low-end and mid-range smartphones in the future.

With each passing year, more smartphone models are switching from LCD panels to OLED panels. Counterpoint Research reports that 600 million smartphones with OLED panels will be shipped in 2020. As entry-level smartphones start using OLED panels, Samsung Display is bound to sell even more units in the coming years.

It is clear that Samsung Display will not have any competitors for the next few years. The company sells OLED panels to Apple, Google, Huawei, OnePlus, OPPO, and Xiaomi. The company is also making huge investments in making foldable OLED panels and foldable glass as shipments of foldable phones are bound to grow in the future.

International Galaxy A41 is official, will be available in Europe in May

Samsung took the veil off the Galaxy A41 in Germany moments ago. The mid-range smartphone will be available for purchase from May for the price of €299, and we can assume that it will be released in other European countries in a similar timeframe.

Although the international Galaxy A41 shares its hardware with the version announced for NTT Docomo a couple of weeks ago, the exterior design is very different; at least when viewed from the back.

The Galaxy A41 has a triple-camera setup with a 48MP main sensor

The main difference between the model for Japan and the international Galaxy A41 lies in the rear-camera design. The former version has a vertically-stacked rear camera assembly, while the international model carries a wider camera bump.

The mid-range solution unveiled by Samsung today carries a 48MP wide-angle main camera along with an 8MP ultrawide (123-degree) shooter and a 5MP depth sensor. The front-facing camera resides in an Infinity-U cutout and clocks in at 25MP. The AMOLED display has a 6.1-inch diagonal and a resolution of 2400 by 1080 pixels.

You can use two SIM cards and a microSD at the same time

According to Samsung Germany, the Galaxy A41 has two SIM card slots that work simultaneously, as well as a microSD card slot that can be used to expand the built-in 64GB of storage by up to 512GB.

Other specs include an unspecified octa-core processor, 4GB of RAM, a 3,500mAh battery with support for 15W fast charging, and an in-display fingerprint scanner.

The Galaxy A41 ships with Android 10 and One UI 2.1 out of the box, it offers Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity as well as a 3.5mm headphone jack, and it measures 149.9 x 69.8 x 7.9mm while tipping the scale at 152 grams. The phone will be available in black, blue, and white, with a prismatic pattern on the back panel.

We’ll keep you up to speed as soon as we learn more about Samsung’s release plans for other markets.

Buy a Galaxy S20+ in the USA and you get an A50 for free / $50

Samsung USA is offering yet another interesting deal for its latest Galaxy S20 flagship, whereby customers willing to acquire the Galaxy S20+ 5G on a carrier financing plan will receive a Galaxy A50 for free. The offer is valid only for the Plus model from Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint.

If you’d rather buy the factory unlocked Galaxy S20+ 5G without any strings attached to a carrier, you can get the Galaxy A50 for only $50 along with your new flagship. Normally, the factory unlocked Galaxy A50 would set you back $224.99 (after a limited-time $75 discount). But if you buy the Galaxy S20+ 5G for its full $1,199 retail price, you can pair it with the Galaxy A50 for just $50.

The Galaxy A50 remains a decent mid-range phone

When we reviewed the Galaxy A50 last year, we considered it to be Samsung’s best value-for-money solution at the time, and it remains a great device to this day. On the other hand, the Galaxy S20+ is a solid flagship that bridges the gap between the standard Galaxy S20 and the Galaxy S20 Ultra. It has a fantastic 120Hz display and offers all-day battery life.

Both of these ongoing deals involving the Galaxy A50 are valid even if you trade-in your older phone for a discount on the Galaxy S20+ 5G, or if you sign in for the 50% guaranteed buy-back program. Visit Samsung USA’s online shop for more details.

Future Low and mid-range 5G Galaxy phones might have Huawei modems

As the adoption rate of 5G ramps up, Samsung is looking forward to adopting 5G chipsets for its low and mid-range smartphones from Huawei, according to a recent Digitimes report citing industry sources.

Whether this means that future low and mid-range Galaxy devices will be powered by HiSilicon’s 5G-enabled Kirin SoCs or adopt stand-alone ‘Balong’ 5G modems is not entirely clear, but we assume it’s the latter. As yet, Huawei’s fully-owned chipmaker HiSilicon offers two 5G modems, namely the Balong 5G01 introduced in 2018, and the Balong 5000.

The latter was unveiled last year as a high-end solution, so as yet, it doesn’t look like Samsung would have too many choices to pick from Huawei’s catalog for its upcoming 5G low and mid-range devices. Perhaps Huawei intends to expand its 5G modem lineup to include more options by the end of the year.

Samsung might not want to invest in lower-end Exynos modems

Similarly, Samsung’s own 5G modem lineup presently consists of two models, specifically the Exynos Modem 5100 and Exynos Modem 5123. The former has been employed by high-end solutions including the Exynos 9820 and 9825, while the latter was paired with the Exynos 990 – also a high-end SoC. Perhaps Samsung doesn’t want to invest in lower-end 5G modems and will rely on Huawei instead.

Assuming that the report is correct, time will tell how a partnership with Huawei on the 5G modem front would work out for Samsung. In the networking segment, at least, Samsung and Huawei are close rivals, and they’ve been competing for 5G clients in countless markets.

Galaxy Z Flip Thom Browne Edition out in Germany with trade-in deals

Samsung revealed a couple of months ago that the Galaxy Z Flip Thom Browne Edition is set to launch in the UK, South Korea, Italy, France, China, Hong Kong, and Japan, but now, the company has decided to introduce the device to Germany where it’s already available for pre-order.

The Galaxy Z Flip Thom Browne Edition costs €2,580, but you’ll be getting more than just a Z Flip with a special paint job. The limited-edition box includes a pair of Galaxy Buds+, the Galaxy Watch Active 2, and leather covers for the foldable phone, all of which carry Thom Browne’s signature Americana striping.

You can save up to €520 via trade-in

Prospective buyers in Germany can now pre-order the Galaxy Z Flip Thom Browne Edition online, and they can expect the phone to ship after April 24 when the full release will take place.

If €2,580 sounds like too high of an investment for this limited edition package, Samsung offers the possibility to slash the price by up to €520 if you trade-in a Samsung or Apple smartphone. For Huawei devices, Samsung offers up to €360 trade-in value, while select LG and Sony smartphones can lower the price by up to €200.

The Thom Browne Edition has the same internal specifications and software features as the standard Galaxy Z Flip variant. This includes a Snapdragon 855+ chipset and 8GB of RAM, 256GB of UFS 3.0 storage, and of course, the 6.7-inch foldable Dynamic AMOLED display with HDR10+ support. Software-wise, it runs Android 10 with One UI 2.1 and provides unique features like Flex Mode.

Samsung today announced that it’s bringing its 2020 Galaxy A series to the United States. Some of Samsung’s best-selling smartphones belong to the Galaxy A series. It offers a great mix of mid-range and premium mid-range handsets at competitive prices. So with this launch, Samsung will significantly improve its competitiveness in the mid-range segment of the market in the US.

The company has released many of these 2020 Galaxy A handsets in other markets already. So it’s about time that customers in the United States got the opportunity to purchase these handsets that provide great value for money. Samung has also confirmed the 5G models of the Galaxy A51 and Galaxy A71, which have been rumored for months now, in today’s release.

Some 2020 Galaxy A models available tomorrow, 5G models this summer

Samsung is kicking off the US launch of its 2020 Galaxy A series with the Galaxy A01 and Galaxy A51 (LTE) which will be available starting tomorrow through Samsung.com as well as select carriers and retailers both online and in-store. Prices start at $109.99 and $399.99 respectively.

One Hand Operation+ gets a Virtual touch pad, here’s how to enable it

Samsung has updated the One Hand Operations+ Good Lock module, and the latest release introduces a new feature called Virtual touch pad. It provides an alternative to One-handed mode built-into One UI. But unlike One-handed mode, the Virtual touch pad available through Good Lock lets you reach any part of your screen without minimizing it. Essentially, it works in full-screen mode.

This is particularly useful if you’re bothered by losing screen real estate in favor of reachability. With One Hand Operations+ and the Virtual touch pad feature, you don’t have to make this trade-off. You can download the One Hand Operations+ module directly to your phone from our APK archive (hit the link).

How to enable the Virtual touch pad

With Good Lock and One Hand Operations+ installed, launch the module from your apps drawer and follow these steps:

Step 1: Tap the On toggle to enable One Hand Operation+
Step 2: Enable and tap either the Left handle or Right handle – whichever you prefer
Step 3: Select the desired gesture, like Straight left, for example
Step 4: Scroll down the list of options and select Virtual touch pad

You can now perform the selected gesture (Straight left in this example) to enable the Virtual touch pad. As seen in the fourth screenshot above, the pad is generally located on the lower half of the screen, and with it, you can control a circular cursor to reach the upper half without having to minimize the display area. It’s particularly useful for devices with large displays, such as the Galaxy S20+ and Galaxy S20 Ultra, whose panels clock in at 6.7 and 6.9-inch, respectively.

Sharp to help smoothen Samsung’s LCD TV exit: report

Samsung and Sharp are reportedly on the verge of a new partnership following a two-year hiatus as the South Korean tech giant is seeking outside help in smoothening its exit from the LCD TV market.

The renewed collaboration would facilitate the final phase of Samsung’s planned transition from liquid crystal displays. Just last week, the company confirmed it will be ending all LCD production by the end of 2020.

Samsung-Sharp reunion a logical necessity

Industry insiders from Taiwan, the home country of Sharp’s parent Foxconn, now claim Sharp is expected to soon begin supplying LCD panels to the chaebol for the first time since ditching Samsung in 2017. Sharp originally ended the relationship due to its new owner’s fierce rivalry with Samsung’s TV business.

Had that not transpired, Samsung Display likely would have shut down its in-house LCD panel manufacturing long ago, remaining fully reliant on external suppliers in the subsequent transitional period. Instead, it was forced to completely rethink its inevitable move away from LED technologies and related solutions and reluctantly postpone the shift on several occasions, all while having to find common ground with LG Display who picked up much of Sharp’s workload.

The likely reunion between Samsung and Sharp is hence a logical necessity and will almost certainly be short-lived in nature; Samsung Display isn’t taking new LCD orders any longer and plans to fulfill its remaining ones — mostly placed by its sister company Samsung Electronics — in the following eight months. Beyond 2020, the industry juggernaut will be doubling down on investments in Quantum Dot OLED panels, having already confirmed as much.

Samsung is finally bringing the Galaxy A01 to Brazil, releasing this week

It’s been a long time coming, but the Galaxy A01 has finally been announced for Brazil, four months after the phone’s original unveiling. It will be available for purchase by the end of the week, but it is not listed on the company’s online store as of this writing. Once it pops up, prospective buyers will be looking at a price of 1,099 Brazilian Real ($210), which is quite a premium over the usual ~$120 asking price in other regions.

Despite the high price relative to other markets, the Galaxy A01 is undeniably a budget solution. It’s powered by the Snapdragon 439 chipset, as revealed by Samsung Vietnam a couple of months back, and the SoC is paired with 2GB of RAM. The device has 32GB of internal storage expandable by up to 1TB and relies on a 3,000mAh battery.

5.7-inch TFT display and dual cameras in tow

The Galaxy A01 has a 5.7-inch TFT display that follows Samsung’s Infinity-V design language. The V-shaped notch accommodates a 5MP camera with an f/2.2 aperture, while the rear-facing main camera setup comprises a 13MP main shooter paired with a 2MP depth sensor.

The phone lacks a fingerprint sensor, but on the bright side, it does have a 3.5mm headphone jack – a feature that has been phased out on almost all of Samsung’s smartphones (and it’s not the only OEM to do so). But for a budget device, the inclusion of a 3.5mm connector is very fitting, as a pair of Galaxy Buds+ in Brazil costs nearly as much as the smartphone itself (999 Real / $191).

Samsung Brazil is releasing the Galaxy A01 in black, blue, and red.

  • Model: SM-A015F
  • Dimensions: 146.3 x 70.9 x 8.3mm
  • Display: 5.7" LCD
  • CPU:
  • Camera: MP F2.2, 2MP Depth F2.4

Samsung Galaxy A71 5G and Galaxy A21s certified ahead of release

The Galaxy A71 5G and Galaxy A21s are drawing closer to their official launch, with Samsung obtaining new product certifications for both devices earlier this week.

More specifically, the Wi-Fi Alliance on Tuesday certified a Samsung-made handset denoted as the SM-A716U, which is likely going to launch as the Galaxy A71 5G. Earlier today, the standards body also published interoperability documentation referencing another Samsung product – the SM-A217F/DSN. Judging by that model number, this is the upcoming Galaxy A21s that’s been the subject of numerous rumors in recent months.

A pair of Android 10 mid-rangers is coming this spring

SamMobile exclusively reported on the existence of the newly certified Galaxy A71 5G three months ago, after learning that both carrier and unlocked variants were in development for the United States. The WFA certificates confirm both lines will ship with an Android 10-based version of One UI, in addition to revealing at least one version of the Galaxy A21s will offer dual-SIM capabilities.

On the other hand, both support spatial multiplexing, a new type of networking solution that increases mobile data rates by combining signals from multiple antennas. This is significant because it adds further credence to a recent benchmark sighting that suggested the Galaxy A21s will leverage Samsung’s Exynos 850 chip. Namely, the said system-on-chip supports that particular MIMO technique, as does the Exynos 980 believed to power the Galaxy A71 5G.

According to previous reports, the Galaxy A21s will also pack a 5,000mAh battery, but what’s less clear is whether it’ll manage to beat the Galaxy A71 5G to the market. The latter already secured its Bluetooth certification in early March, so the timing of its debut now appears to be entirely on Samsung.

[List] Galaxy devices that have received Android 10/One UI 2.0 update

Samsung surprised us with how quickly it released the official Android 10/One UI 2.0 update for the Galaxy S10, and if that weren’t enough, the company even managed to push out the update to two budget smartphones before its other 2019 flagship, the Galaxy Note 10. And, if if Samsung can keep the momentum going, we could see other Galaxy devices making the jump to the newest version of Android in the near future.

While we will be writing a separate article every time One UI 2.0 and Android 10 come to another Galaxy device for the first time, we decided it would also help our readers if we put together a list that tells them which Galaxy devices have already received the update. You can find that list below – you can bookmark this page and keep checking back from time to time to see if Android 10 is available for your Galaxy smartphone or tablet.

Do keep in mind that the presence of a device on this list does not mean it has been updated to Android 10 in every country. Samsung gradually expands availability of software updates, whether they are simple security updates or those that bring a newer version of the OS, although you can keep an eye on our firmware archive to find out if the update has been released in your country.

Galaxy A10 and Galaxy A10e get Android 10 and One UI 2.0 update

It seems that every other day, Samsung is bringing the Android 10 update to more and more of its phones. Today, the company released Android 10 and One UI 2.0 for the Galaxy J6, and it is also rolling out the update to the Galaxy A10, its highest-selling smartphone of Q3 2019, and its slightly lower-end variant, the Galaxy A10e.

The A10 update is currently available in India with firmware version A105FDDU3BTCA and includes the March 2020 security patch, while the Galaxy A10e update is available in Slovakia and has the latest (April) security patch. The rollout for both handsets should expand to other countries in the next couple of weeks.

The Galaxy A10e and Galaxy A10 were the most affordable of Samsung’s 2019 Galaxy A series lineup, so you can expect the Android 10 and One UI 2.0 update to include just the bare essentials. That means features like the built-in screen recorder haven’t made the cut, though there’s still plenty of new functionality. One UI 2.0 also makes a ton of user interface improvements and changes, which we have detailed here.

The Galaxy A10 update is around 1.2GB in size if you download it over the air, and the A10e update should be similar in size. You can download the update directly on your phone by tapping Download and install from the Settings » Software update menu. If that doesn’t work, you can download the full Android 10 firmware from our archive and install it on your A10 or A10e using a Windows PC.

Galaxy Note 20 and Fold 2 remain on schedule for August launch

Despite the current lack of global market stability, Samsung reportedly isn’t budging on its plans for the Galaxy Note 20 and continues to make preparations for an August launch.

What’s more, it appears the company intends to pair the flagship’s unveiling with the official debut of the Galaxy Fold 2, yet another addition to its nascent portfolio of foldable handsets.

Global pandemic not enough to delay the next Galaxy Unpacked

Samsung’s already been feeling the effects of the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, particularly in regards to the disappointing start of the Galaxy S20 line. Whether the weaker-than-expected sales of the tech giant’s latest premium range affected its plans for the Galaxy Note 20 is unclear, but insiders quoted by a new report out of Korea are confident there won’t be any launch delays, at least as things stand right now.

That isn’t to say Samsung is certain its second Galaxy Unpacked event of the year will be a physical manifestation. Quite the contrary, the company’s already preparing for a worst-case scenario wherein the global pandemic maintains its momentum in the second half of the year, forcing it to launch its next ultra-premium smartphones in an online-only setting, as per the same sources.

Another factor that may have to be taken into account is how the current coronavirus outbreak wave will affect Samsung’s supply chain, particularly its core production lines in Vietnam. With the Far Eastern country entering a national lockdown on April 1 until further notice, Samsung may be forced to postpone the actual release of the Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Fold 2 even if their August announcements remain on schedule. Some recent industry rumors suggest the company may even unveil the upcoming devices in July, but those claims have yet to be substantiated in any meaningful way.

Galaxy Fold Android 10 with One UI 2.1 update out in the USA

Galaxy Fold owners have had to endure quite a long wait for Android 10. Despite being the costliest smartphone-cum-tablet ever put on the market by Samsung, the software support it has received has left a lot to be desired. Android 10 for the Galaxy Fold arrived after many budget and mid-range Galaxy phones, though now that the update has finally started rolling out, Samsung has quickly been releasing it in more and more countries.

One UI 2.1 features like Quick Share are included

Today, the Android 10 update for the Galaxy Fold has reached the US. Carrying build number F900U1UEU3BTCE, the update brings One UI 2.1 to Samsung’s first foldable, along with a couple of new features from the Galaxy S20, including Quick Share and Music Share. Other One UI 2.1 and Galaxy S20 features, such as Pro video mode and Single Take mode for the camera, will also come to the Galaxy Fold, though Samsung will release a separate update for those features later down the line.

The Android 10 update for the Galaxy Fold also includes the March 2020 security patch and all of the One UI 2.x goodies that you expect.
