T-Mobile confirms the Galaxy Tab A will be launched on August 19

A product support page for the Galaxy Tab A 8.0 was recently spotted on T-Mobile’s website which led to speculation that perhaps the carrier would be launching this tablet in the very future, sure enough the company today confirmed that it’s going to launch the Galaxy Tab A 8.0 on August 19. It’s the first carrier in the United States to sell a 4G LTE enabled variant of this tablet.

Samsung has only been selling the Wi-Fi variant of the Galaxy Tab A in the United States, for now though T-Mobile will be the only choice for people who want to purchase a LTE enabled unit. T-Mobile is going to sell this tablet through its online and participating retail stores starting August 19 priced at $0 down with 23 installments of $13.34 and 1 installment of $13.17 for a total price of $319.99. That’s a decent price for a tablet that has an 8-inch Super AMOLED display, 1.2GHz quad-core processor, 2GB RAM, 16GB internal storage with microSD support, 5-megapixel rear and 2-megapixel front camera as well as Android 5.0.2.

New Gear VR headset is coming “soon” says Samsung co-CEO

Samsung usually launches new Gear VR headsets alongside new mobile devices but that didn’t happen today when the company formally announced the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 edge+ but Samsung co-CEO and mobile business head JK Shin says that the next Gear VR headset is coming “soon.” He didn’t reveal the exact release date because he says that it’s “a surprise.”

The first Gear virtual reality headset was released last year and it only worked with the Galaxy Note 4. Earlier this year in March the company launched a new one that works with the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge so today many expected a new Gear VR to be shown off that would work with the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 edge+ but no such announcement was made. Perhaps Samsung might show it off at IFA 2015 in Berlin where it’s also going to unveil the Gear S2 round smartwatch, we’ll be at the event next month to bring you all of the news as it happens.

Samsung Lookbook gives us another glimpse of the Gear S2 smartwatch

At its event earlier today Samsung briefly talked about the round smartwatch that it’s going to unveil next month, the device is commonly known by its codename Orbis but it’s official moniker is the Gear S2. Samsung has spent a lot of time developing this wearable device given that it decided not to launch it at MWC 2015 just so it could take the extra time and do something great with it. We’ve already reported exclusively on the Gear S2′s specifications and the fact that it’s going to have a rotating bezel ring, while Samsung has given us yet another glimpse at the Gear S2 by publishing what it calls a “Lookbook.”

The Lookbook features promotional images of Samsung products and the Gear S2 makes an appearance in it, from the looks of it the smartwatch appears to be fashioned out of metal. All of the images that feature the Gear S2 include women and given the apparent size and dimensions of the piece we see here it’s possible that this could be the Gear S2 version that’s meant for the ladies, the one for men is likely to be larger and a bit thicker than this one. It does look good nonetheless, much better than any of Samsung’s previous smartwatches. The company is going to formally unveil the Gear S2 at IFA 2015 in Berlin next month and we’ll be on the ground to report on the developments as they happen.

Galaxy S6 edge+ UK release confirmed, the Galaxy Note 5 will arrive next year

We did report a while back that Samsung might not launch the Galaxy Note 5 across all major markets at the same time and now the company has formally confirmed this. Even though pre-orders for the Galaxy S6 edge+ will open up soon in the United Kingdom and the device will be released in stores starting next month Samsung has confirmed that the Galaxy Note 5 won’t be released in the UK this year.

Samsung says that it will look at further opportunities to launch the Galaxy Note 5 in other markets based on individual market situations but for now the handset will only be released in the US and Asian markets in August, the company has already confirmed US pre-order and release dates for both handsets. Pre-orders for the Galaxy S6 edge+ start on August 18 in the United Kingdom and the handset will be available from retail stores across the country on September 4, pricing is yet to be confirmed by Samsung’s retail and carrier partners.

Samsung teases the Gear S2 round smartwatch, will be unveiled next month in Berlin

We exclusively reported quite a long time ago that Samsung is developing a round smartwatch and even though the company dropped some hints in its software it never really showed us what the smartwatch would look like. Even though Samsung wasn’t expected to formally launch the smartwatch, commonly known by its codename Orbis, at its event today the company did show off the device and also revealed that it’s actually going to be called the Samsung Gear S2.

Samsung didn’t go into much detail about the features and specifications of the Gear S2 but we did get a look at the design placeholder, however it did mention one crucial bit of information, the Gear S2 is going to be formally unveiled at the IFA 2015 convention in Berlin next month. SamMobile will be present on the ground to cover the festivities and will have much more to report on about the Gear S2 from Berlin.

Samsung unveils new details about Samsung Pay

If you’ve been watching the Unpacked 2015 event then you probably know that Samsung just announced its plans for Samsung Pay, the company’s mobile payment service that supports both NFC and standard magnetic payment terminals. Current partners include major brands such as Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Citi and many more. Samsung announced that over 100 retailers will support Samsung Pay once it launches in Korea starting with the 20th of August, and September 20 in the United States. Among the included countries we will be seeing Samsung Pay launch in countries such as China, Spain, UK and more, all of which have an unknown release date at this point.

Furthermore, Samsung Pay will also have support for membership cards, gift cards and it will all be protected by a hardware-based security system known as Samsung Knox. This will not transmit any of your sensitive data when you perform a payment, but instead will issue a unique code to authorize the payment. Given that the retailer allows you to swipe your credit card in order to make your payment, then you should also be able to use Samsung Pay.

Here’s an image of all partners affiliated with Samsung Pay. The service goes live in South Korea on August 20 and in the US next month.

Samsung will sell a physical keyboard for the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 edge+

Physical QWERTY keyboards are no longer in fashion, sure BlackBerry is sticking with them still but everyone else has moved on to virtual keyboards. They used to be a staple on all mobile phones back in the day but that’s no longer the case but Samsung does see some incentive in offering one for the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 edge+. As previously reported the company is indeed going to sell a physical keyboard for these devices.

This physical keyboard can actually snap on top of the device’s display and while it does block half off the display it makes up for that by providing the tactile feedback that one only gets from physical keyboards. The device will automatically recognize the keyboard and adjust its user interface accordingly, keypresses are registered by the screen underneath and thus the keyboard doesn’t require any battery or Bluetooth connection to function. Carrying it around won’t be much of a hassle because it can be snapped to the backside of the device for storage and portability. Samsung has not yet revealed how much this keyboard is going to cost and when it’s going to be released.

USB or wireless charger, Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+ charge fast

Wireless charging was a nice feature to have on the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge, especially given the average battery performance of the two devices, but wirelessly charging is a rather slow process. On the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+, Samsung is touting speedier wireless charging to take away that disadvantage – the 3,000 mAh batteries on both the phones can charge in 120 minutes through Samsung’s new wireless charger.

Through a USB cable, that duration will come down to 90 minutes, which is as impressive as the charging time on the wireless pad. Furthermore, you still get support for both popular wireless charging standards, Qi and PMA. We don’t know how long the Note 5 and S6 edge+ will last on a single charge, but if the endurance isn’t great, it’s nice to see we will at least have fast charging no matter if we use a USB cable for it or not.

The Note 5′s S Pen has learnt some new tricks

They say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks but this saying doesn’t apply to the S Pen which has learnt some new tricks, now that the Galaxy Note 5 has been officially unveiled we can tell you precisely what these new tricks are. It effectively lets users take notes on the device as they would on a piece of paper, you don’t have to wake up the display first just take out the S Pen and start writing on the screen.

S Pen has had the air command features for quite some time now and they have been improved as well, users can now add their favorite S Pen apps to the menu that pops up when the S Pen is hovered over the screen. Samsung has also made improvements to the stylus’s performance and decreased the lag between contact and when markings actually start showing up on the display. We’ll get additional details regarding all of the improvements made by Samsung to the S Pen as the event goes on.

Here’s how the Galaxy Note 5 compares to its predecessors, the Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note 3

Samsung has unveiled two new high-end phablets today, the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 edge+, and both of them are really gorgeous to look at. Their metal unibodies that are covered with Gorilla Glass 4 on both the sides are nothing short of art. However, a lot of changes have been brought on the inside as well. If you are someone who owns one of the Note series phablets from the yesteryears, and if you are wondering whether the Galaxy Note 5 is a worthy upgrade over your existing device, have a look at the comparison table below to know how it compares to the Galaxy Note 4 and the Galaxy Note 3.

The Galaxy Note 5 features a 5.7-inch QHD Super AMOLED display that’s similar to the one used in the Galaxy Note 4, but has a higher resolution than the Galaxy Note 3. The new octa-core Exynos 7420 processor is faster, and runs in 64-bit mode to take the full advantage of Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. As opposed to the previous Note series phablets, RAM has been increased to 4GB. Samsung has decided to remove a microSD card slot in favour of faster UFS 2.0 internal storage that come in two variants; 32GB and 64GB.

If you are coming from the Galaxy Note 3, you’ll find a huge upgrade in the camera department. The Galaxy Note 5 features an excellent combo of  a 16-megapixel primary camera and a 5-megapixel secondary camera that was used in the Galaxy S6. Even though the primary camera uses the same sensor that was used in the Galaxy Note 4, there’s a quite improvement in final image and video quality, thanks to better software and F/1.9 aperture. Samsung has thrown in a heart-rate monitor and an IR blaster as well. It runs a newer version of TouchWiz UI ( running on top of Android 5.1.1 Lollipop) that is improved a lot when compared to older TouchWiz that is running in the Note 3 and the Note 4. There are some neat S Pen related software enhancements.

It also features a combination of a touch-based fingerprint scanner and an NFC chip that could be used for transactions through Samsung Pay. Improved connectivity features include Cat. 6 LTE, dual-band Wi-Fi ac/b/g/n, and Bluetooth v4.2. The battery that’s used in the Galaxy Note 5 is non-removable, and its capacity has been reduced to 3,000 mAh battery. This seems like a downgrade coming from a 3,220 mAh battery that was used in the Galaxy Note 3 and the Galaxy Note 4. To compensate for the lack of a removable battery, Samsung has equipped the Galaxy Note 5 with Fast Charge as well as wireless charging.

Here are the differences between the Galaxy S6 edge+, Galaxy Note 5, and Galaxy Note 4

Two new high-end phablets were announced by Samsung today, the S Pen-equipped Galaxy Note 5 and the curved screen-equipped Galaxy S6 edge+. Both of them have similar features and hardware specifications, with only two differences distinguishing them from each other. If you are a Galaxy Note 4 owner, there are the differences between your current phablet and the two devices that were unveiled today.

The 5.7-inch Super AMOLED display used in the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 edge+ has the same resolution as the one used in the Galaxy Note 4. However, Samsung states that it can be much brighter in outdoors, and can reproduce more accurate colors. Moreover, the screen on the Galaxy S6 edge+ is curved on both the sides. The 16-megapixel primary camera used in the S6 edge+ and the Note 5 is same as the one from the Note 4, but it can take better images and videos, thanks to improved software and image post processing.

Coming to the internal hardware, both the new devices feature a new 64-bit Exynos 7420 processor, 4GB RAM, and 32/64GB of internal storage space. Samsung has used a faster UFS 2.0 chip for storage, which is much faster than the one used in the Note 4. There’s no microSD card slot in either of the devices, so you won’t be able to expand the storage. Instead, Samsung is offering 100GB of free cloud storage through Microsoft OneDrive. Also, the battery capacity has been downgraded from 3,220 mAh in the Note 4 to 3,000 mAh in the Note 5 as well as the Galaxy S6 edge+. However, there’s quick charging as well as wireless charging in both the devices.

There’s a faster, much improved touch-based fingerprint sensor in both these new devices when compared to the swipe-based one that was used in the Galaxy Note 4. This new sensor will also be used in authenticating shopping transactions through Samsung Pay. Finally, the new version of TouchWiz UI, which is running on top of Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, is faster, cleaner and better designed. It even brings support for themes through the Theme Store. The company has also brought enhanced S Pen features to the Galaxy Note 5 and improved Edge features to the Galaxy S6 edge+.

Key Differences: Galaxy Note 5 vs. Galaxy S6 edge+ vs. Galaxy S6 edge vs. Galaxy S6

Unlike the past couple of years, Samsung has released four high-end smartphones – the Galaxy Note 5, the Galaxy S6 edge+, the Galaxy S6, and the Galaxy S6 edge – in 2015. The Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 edge+ were announced earlier a few hours ago, while the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 were announced back in March earlier this year.

All these devices have similar specifications, build quality and design. All of them feature QHD Super AMOLED displays, Android 5.1.1 Lollipop-based newer TouchWiz UI, a 64-bit octa-core Exynos 7420 processor, a 16-megapixel primary camera with OIS and 4K video recording, a 5-megapixel front-facing camera, Samsung Pay, touch-based fingerprint sensor, and 4G LTE.

The Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 edge+ have 5.7-inch displays and 3,000 mAh batteries as opposed to smaller 5.1-inch displays and lower capacity sub-2,600 mAh batteries that are used in the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge. The Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 edge+ have 4GB RAM as opposed to 3GB RAM that’s used in the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge.

SamMobile’s hands-on experience with the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+

Defying convention, Samsung outed two new flagship smartphones today, the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+. There is a reason behind this madness – the company is targeting different markets with each device, with very little chance of both phones being available in the same region at the same time. We were able to go hands-on with both the Note 5 and S6 edge+, and here is our initial opinion about the two 5.7-inch phablets.

Galaxy Note 5

Like the Galaxy S6, the Galaxy Note 5 is bringing a huge change to the lineup in terms of design. An elongated S6, the Note 5 looks great and feels solid in the hand, thanks to the metal and glass build and the curves on the back. Our hands-on time was spent with the gold version of the phone, though it will also be available in silver, black and white color options, with the silver version making a comeback after a long disappearance from the Note series.

As expected, the Super AMOLED display is brilliant and makes us wonder how things can get better from here as far as the viewing experience is concerned. The S Pen slot is at the bottom, and this time around the S Pen – which looks more like a regular pen than ever before – can be accessed through a push-to-eject mechanism, something we liked more than the manual method we have had to use till the Note 4. What we didn’t like were TouchWiz’s new default app icons. The new ones aren’t worse than what we had before, but they are certainly not too better either and look rather cartoonish. But then again, the support for themes should make up for it for most users.

On the software front, the camera app has received a couple upgrades. You now have a YouTube broadcasting feature that lets you record a video and let your friends watch live by sharing the YouTube link with them. This is something you can probably do with third-party apps off the Play Store, but it’s nice to have it built-in. The camera app has also received an update to the Pro mode – you finally have the option of manually setting the shutter speed, something that should make the imaging experience in low-light conditions even better. Images can also be saved in RAW, without the need of a third-party camera app.

IMG_1906

Galaxy S6 edge+

As we had expected, the Galaxy S6 edge+ is, for all intents and purposes, a bigger version of the Galaxy S6 edge. That is to say the display is larger and even more attractive, and the phone looks like something from the future like its predecessor. The bigger battery and 4GB of RAM are also welcome changes; the interface is similar to the Galaxy Note 5, including all the stuff you get in the camera, and the Edge panel has been updated as well.

Sadly, the Edge panel is still not as useful as it can be. You get to set favorite apps in addition to favorite contacts (who you can now send a picture or emoticon to from the Edge shortcut), but despite the larger screen, you still get only five options. We have no idea why Samsung hasn’t added the option to scroll for more options like it did on the Galaxy Note Edge, but we’re guessing the company deems the much smaller curves a detriment to too much functionality.

SAMSUNG CSC

Frankly, we liked what we saw when we played with both devices, but after the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge we didn’t exactly feel awed by either device. The biggest question on our mind is whether the two – especially the Note 5 – will be able to provide the kind of battery life we have come to expect from Samsung’s phablet flagships. Software updates are another concern; Samsung has said that it will be providing regular security updates for its devices, but it remains to be seen how quickly the company will roll out Android M and whether it will repeat its habit of leaving out features that should be part of updates from the start.

Also worrying is the fact that the Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+ will be available in limited regions. While the S6 edge+ is sure to attract a lot of consumers, we’re not happy with the fact that many Note fans around the world won’t be able to get their hands on the Note 5, at least not until Samsung decides to do a worldwide launch. It’s particularly disappointing considering both the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+ are near-perfect devices that have a lot to offer, and while it makes business sense to launch each phone based on a market’s demand, it sure is a step we hope Samsung will reconsider somewhere down the line.

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+ official with 5.7-inch displays, 4GB RAM, and Android 5.1

The day we have all been waiting for is finally here. Samsung has officially announced the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+, two phablets that will handle the role of the company’s late 2015 flagships in different regions. Naturally, the Galaxy Note 5 is the more important device here, as the Galaxy S6 edge+ is simply a blown-up version of the Galaxy S6 edge. Both devices share similar specs for the most part, with the Note 5′s claim to fame being the S Pen stylus and the S6 edge+ boasting a dual-edge display.

The two smartphones follow Samsung’s new design philosophy that combines glass and metal for a beautiful and premium look and feel, and the Note 5 also introduces a new design element that should help in handling. Those curves on the front of the S6 edge+? The Note 5 has similar curves on the back side that make it feel solid in the hand and prevent it from slipping out too easily. The Super AMOLED displays on both devices measure 5.7-inches in size and have a resolution of 2560×1440 pixels, and the processing power is provided by the Exynos 7420 CPU.

The Exynos 7420 is clocked at 2.1GHz for the Cortex-A57 cores and 1.5GHz for the Cortex-A53 cores, and users now get 4GB of RAM for their multitasking needs. Imaging is handled by a 16-megapixel rear camera with f1.9 aperture and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera, a setup that is carried over from the Galaxy S6 lineup. Storage options are 32 and 64GB; a 128GB model is missing, but we’re guessing that’s not a bad thing as 128GB models can be rather costly and aren’t usually manufactured in high quantity.

note-5-s6-edge+-official

On the connectivity front, you get support for Cat 9/6 LTE (based on region), along with Bluetooth 4.2, NFC, and a microUSB 2.0 port. The battery is a 3,000 mAh unit on both phones; yep, it’s worrying that the batteries aren’t too big, but Samsung says that in addition to quick charging through a USB cable, the phones also charge quickly on a wireless charging pad, in 120 minutes to be precise. The dimensions of the Note 5 come in at 153.2×6.1×7.6 mm with a weight of 171 grams, while the Edge+ is 154.4×75.8×9.153 mm and weights 153 grams.

Samsung Pay is also making its debut on these two flagships, with a launch in Korea on the release date of the devices and then in the US in September. Of course, the Galaxy Note 5′s S Pen can’t be left unmentioned. This time around, the stylus looks and feels more like a traditional pen, and it’s also easier to remove thanks to the new push-to-eject mechanism. As for the software, we get Android 5.1 Lollipop with the latest version of Samsung’s TouchWiz UX, including features like live YouTube broadcasting, quick camera launch by double pressing the home button, and more.

The Galaxy S6 edge+ will go on sale globally this month in Black Sapphire, Gold Platinum and other colors, though availability will fully expand in September. The same goes for the Galaxy Note 5, though unlike the curvy S6 edge+, the Note 5 won’t be available globally and will be limited to select markets. We aren’t sure what these markets are, but we will be sure to update you with all the information as and when we get it.

What do you think about Samsung’s new (literally) big things? Let us know in the comments, and hang in there for our hands-on experience with both the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+.
