SamMobile Firmware Update Magazine: May 21, 2018

Welcome to the latest edition of our weekly Firmware Magazine. You can think of it as your go-to resource to find out which of your Samsung devices has received a new update or if it’s going to receive a new firmware update in the near future.

To keep things interesting, we present the Firmware Magazine in new designs every week. It will always include the important details about firmware updates such as the firmware versions, device model numbers, Android OS versions and the country where said update is out already.

Keep in mind, however, that these firmware details are based on the firmware that are available in our database, and in some cases, the latest updates might not show in the same week as the full firmware files take additional time to make it to our database.

The purpose of this magazine is to bring all of that important information about firmware updates to you, the reader, in a manner that’s easy to comprehend—so even if you’re new to the world of firmware, you’ll have no trouble making sense of it all.

Hey there, SamMobile readers. We’re proud to announce that we will soon be launching SamMobile 5.0, a new look for your favorite website for keeping up with all things Samsung. We have been hard at work at modernizing our look, and although we have faced a few delays, we’re finally ready to give you a look at the new design. We’ve worked on making everything look cleaner, sharper, and more consistent across the various sections of the site, including our firmware and device databases, to improve your experience on both mobile and desktop with version 5.0.

Galaxy J4 and Galaxy J6 quietly listed on Samsung Pakistan’s website

Samsung has quietly made the Galaxy J4 and Galaxy J6 official in Pakistan by listing both phones on its website. Pakistan was confirmed to be one of the initial launch markets for the Galaxy J4 when the first official firmware for the device was released for the country earlier this month, though it doesn’t look like the phone is actually available for purchase just yet through the online stores mentioned on Samsung’s website. The Galaxy J6 isn’t on sale, either, but with the phone going on sale in India tomorrow, it shouldn’t be long before both the J4 and J6 hit retail in Pakistan.

The Galaxy J4’s specs match our exclusive report on the same. It has a standard 16:9 5.5-inch HD Super AMOLED display, quad-core Exynos 7570 processor clocked at 1.4 GHz, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage (and a microSD slot), a 13-megapixel f/1.9 rear camera, a 5-megapixel f/1.9 front camera with flash, and a 3,000 mAh battery. It runs Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box. The Galaxy J6, meanwhile, gets a 5.6-inch HD+ (1480×720) Super AMOLED Infinity Display, the octa-core Exynos 7870 chipset, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of expandable internal storage, and 13-megapixel and 8-megapixel rear and front cameras with f/1.9 aperture and LED flash.

Like the Galaxy J4, the J6 has a 3,000 mAh battery and runs Oreo but also gets a rear-facing fingerprint sensor placed below the camera. Also new on these phones is the ability to adjust the brightness of the front camera’s flash. The front flash is usually a persistent light rather than an actual flash, so it makes sense that Samsung has now built in an option to adjust the brightness for better control over selfies in poor lighting conditions (and also to make sure they don’t hurt your eyes as much).

Samsung Pakistan hasn’t listed the higher storage and RAM models of these phones, though it’s possible those will go on sale at a later date after the base variants have been released. The pricing is unknown as well at this point in time. Colors include black, gold, and orchid gray for both phones; a purple version is shown on the site as well but isn’t a part of the color options just yet.

May 2018 security patch update rolling out to multiple Samsung devices

Samsung is rolling out updates with the May 2018 security patch to a couple of smartphones today. These phones are the Galaxy A8+, Galaxy S8 (and S8+), and the Galaxy J1 mini Prime, so it’s one each from the low-end, mid-range, and high-end segments of Samsung’s ever-expanding Galaxy lineup. The Galaxy S8 update is rolling out in China, the Galaxy A8+ update in India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh, and the J1 mini Prime update is available in Egypt.

The May 2018 patch fixes six critical Android OS vulnerabilities in addition to a slew of high and moderate-risk ones. It also brings fixes for seven vulnerabilities that affect only Samsung’s software. The Galaxy S8 update for China also brings stability improvements for Bixby and WeChat and fixes a bug that could result in photos not being saved to the gallery. The Galaxy A8+ update includes performance improvements, though the previous update for the device also mentioned the same, so it’s likely just a generic changelog.

These updates can be download from the Settings » Software update menu (or in the About phone » Software update menu) if you’re not willing to wait around for your device to notify you about the update on its own. Samsung reportedly started an R&D division for its foundry business

Samsung’s semiconductor division has been doing exceptionally well in the recent past. The division’s impressive performance is reflected clearly in the record-breaking earnings Samsung continues to post in recent few quarters. Last year was particularly good for Samsung with the company dethroning Intel to emerge as the largest chipmaker in the world. While Samsung has secured the top spot in the sector, primarily due to its memory products, it has just 7.4 percent market share in the foundry space.

In what can be seen as an effort to change its fortunes in the foundry market, Samsung has reportedly set up an R&D division for its foundry business. The news comes from a report which cites industry sources aware of the proceedings. Worth billions of dollars, the foundry business involves fabricating chip designs of companies who don’t have a semiconductor fabrication plant.

The Korean company is currently the fourth largest player in the global foundry business and is aiming to catch up with the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) placed at the top. The R&D division is reportedly under the device solution arm of Samsung and is focused on augmenting company’s capabilities in the foundry business. The new research unit joins memory, system LSI, semiconductor, production technology, display centers, and other research centers under the device solution wing.

“Samsung recently launched various efforts to make inroads deeper into the foundry business, also kicking off the Samsung Advanced Foundry Ecosystem program earlier this year for foundry-related clients,” says an industry watcher in the report.

Samsung launches the Galaxy J8 alongside the Galaxy J6, A6, and A6+ in India

Samsung has launched four new smartphones in India today, all of them sporting the company’s Super AMOLED Infinity displays. What’s surprising here is that the company, in addition to bringing the Galaxy J6, Galaxy A6, and Galaxy A6+ to the country, has also unveiled the Galaxy J8. The Galaxy J8 will be going on sale in India in July, so it looks like Samsung has simply taken the opportunity to make it official today and could be releasing it worldwide later on with the Galaxy J8+.

The Galaxy J6, Galaxy A6, and Galaxy A6+, meanwhile, will hit offline and online retail stores starting tomorrow, May 22nd. The Galaxy J6 will be exclusive to Flipkart, and the Galaxy A6 and A6+ will be available from Amazon, in addition to Samsung’s official online store. Pricing is set at Rs. 25,990, Rs 22,990 and Rs 21,990 for the Galaxy A6+, the Galaxy A6 with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage, and the Galaxy A6 with 4GB RAM and 32GB storage respectively. The Galaxy J6 will cost Rs. 16,490 for the 4GB+64GB variant and Rs. 13,990 for the 3GB+32GB variant.

The Galaxy J6’s pricing for India has been revealed as well despite the fact that it won’t be releasing until July. It will cost Rs. 18,990 and will only come in a single variant with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. As usual, Samsung is including a few purchase offers. There’s a Rs. 3,000 cashback on payment through Paytm Mall at local retailers for the A6 and A6+, Rs. 1,500 cashback for the J6 and J8, and an additional cashback of Rs. 1,500 for the Galaxy J6 and J8 for those using an ICICI debit or credit card through Paytm. Oh, and there’s also a one-time screen replacement offer for purchases made till June 20th.

Now, as far as the specs are concerned, the Galaxy A6 and A6+ offer the same hardware as the international models announced earlier this month. The same goes for the Galaxy J6, the specs for which we had leaked earlier. As for the Galaxy J8, it’s similar to the Galaxy A6+ in all but two areas: It gets a 16-megapixel front camera instead of a 24MP front camera, and has a polycarbonate unibody instead of the metal unibody of the A6 and A6+. The Galaxy J6 has a polycarbonate unibody as well, as we had confirmed in our exclusive pre-launch look at the device. Features common to all devices include a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor, face unlock, and Samsung Mall, which lets users in India shop from various online stores from a single app.

Before we forget, Samsung has also equipped these devices with another feature developed specifically for the Indian market. It’s called Chat-Over-Video and is focused on those who tend to use their phones for social networking and watching videos above all else. With Chat-Over-Video, you will be able to watch full-screen video on your device while chatting with your friends and family using a transparent keyboard. It’s unclear exactly how this will work, but we will hopefully be able to take a look soon on a review unit.

All of these phones run Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box, and we’re just gonna throw in Samsung India’s official spec list below so you can see how the specs compare for each device. For more details on the specs, visit our devices section.

Galaxy S Light Luxury a.k.a Galaxy S8 Lite officially launched in China

Recent reports had revealed that Samsung was working on a watered-down version of the Galaxy S8 and it was then referred to as the Galaxy S8 Lite by the rumor mill. We reported yesterday that Samsung is going to announce this device as the Galaxy S Light Luxury today and that’s precisely what it has done. The handset bearing model number SM-G8750 has now been officially announced in China as the Galaxy S Light Luxury.

The device looks much the same as the Galaxy S8 even though it doesn’t have comparable specs. It even has the 18.5:9 aspect ratio 5.8-inch Infinity Display albeit with FHD+ resolution. The handset features an 8-megapixel front and 16-megapixel rear camera with the fingerprint sensor placed alongside it at the back. The device doesn’t have a heart rate sensor, though.

It retains the IP68 water and dust resistance rating as well as the physical Bixby key since the voice assistant is onboard too. Additional features include 4G LTE support, Samsung Pay, wireless charging, iris scanning and facial recognition.

You won’t find the Snapdragon 835 under the hood, though. It’s powered by a less powerful chip – the Snapdragon 660 – with 4GB Of RAM and 64GB of storage. It also comes with a 3,000mAh battery and Android 8.0 Oreo.

The Galaxy S Light Luxury is going to cost ¥3999 which is equal to $625 at the prevailing exchange rate. Customers who buy one during the pre-order period which runs from today through June 1 will be able to get it for ¥3699 or $578 instead. It’s now available for purchase through JD.com, one of the leading online retailers in China.

Samsung has only launched this handset for customers in China and it appears highly unlikely that this device will be offered in other markets. The company is selling the Galaxy S Light Luxury in Burgundy Red and Midnight Black colors. The handset ships with AKG earphones in the box much like the Galaxy S8 does.
