Here’s your first look at the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE

When Samsung launched the Galaxy S20 FE last year, it committed to launching a new “FE” model of its flagship every year. That’s why it didn’t come as a surprise when we first found out about two months ago that the Galaxy S21 FE was in development.

The company is expected to launch the Fan Edition variant of the Galaxy S21 later this year. The first renders have now appeared online, giving us a glimpse of what to expect from the device.

First Galaxy S21 FE renders have surfaced

These renders have been published by @OnLeaks who has a pretty solid track record in these matters. He points out that this is an early look at the Galaxy S21 FE. It’s quite possible that minor changes could be made prior to the launch.

At first glance, the Galaxy S21 FE looks quite similar to the Galaxy S21. Look closely and you’ll see one big difference in the design. The rear camera housing isn’t Contour Cut like it is on the Galaxy S21. On that device, it protrudes from the metal frame itself.

On the Galaxy S21 FE, the rear camera housing protrudes from the back panel, not the metal frame. That sleek element of the Contour Cut design is lost here but the overall design is good enough.

If history is any indication, the Galaxy S21 FE will have a “Glasstic” rear panel, which is just a fancy word for plastic. The dimensions are said to come in at 155.7 x 74.5 x 7.9mm. At these dimensions, it’s marginally taller and wider than the Galaxy S21 but has the same thickness.

The Galaxy S21 FE is expected to feature a 6.4-inch flat Infinity-O display, slightly bigger than the Galaxy S21’s 6.2-inch display. It will have a triple-camera setup at the back. We also know that it will be launched with at least five color options.

Samsung saw considerable success with the Galaxy S20 FE primarily because of its price tag. If the same strategy is repeated for the Galaxy S21 FE, Samsung might just have another hit on its hands.

How to record calls on a Samsung Galaxy smartphone

The ability to record calls has been a built-in feature of Galaxy smartphones for years now. Seeing how it’s finally making its way to vanilla Android via the Google Phone app, this is a good opportunity to get a refresher on what your Samsung device can already do.

To access the basic call recording functionality, open your Phone app, tap the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner, then go to Settings. You should see the Record calls option near the top of the following interface, immediately below spam protection functionality. Like in the following screens:

Samsung Galaxy phones support call recording, but not everywhere

If you aren’t seeing this option, make sure you’re opening the stock app with a green phone icon and confirm that you want to use it as the default if prompted. Assuming that’s all done and you still aren’t seeing the option to record phone calls, automatically or otherwise, that likely signals Samsung simply hasn’t enabled to functionality in your country due to legal reasons. Research whether one-way call recording is legal in your jurisdiction to confirm that suspicion, or talk with a Samsung rep directly.

Otherwise, you should be looking at a Record calls interface from where you can either initiate a recording or set up automatic tapings. The built-in feature has three modes: you can auto-record all calls, those coming from unsaved numbers, or only track specific numbers. Note that auto-recordings of individual callers can be combined with either of the other two behaviors. And you can revise your settings so long as your device is not ringing.

To conclude, there’s no need to download third-party callers in order to record calls on your Samsung Galaxy smartphone. And as an added bonus, the built-in auto-recorder works even with the battery-saving mode enabled, which is never a guarantee with third-party apps you haven’t explicitly cleared for such scenarios.

Samsung has started development of the Galaxy Z Fold 3 firmware

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 remains one of Samsung’s highly anticipated devices of the year. The new foldable smartphone is expected to bring a variety of improvements. It may also be the first foldable from Samsung to have support for the S Pen.

The company hasn’t revealed as yet when it will unveil the new foldable. However, it’s quite likely that we’ll get it in the second half of this year. Samsung is diligently working on getting the device ready. We hear that it has now started development of the Galaxy Z Fold 3 firmware.

Galaxy Z Fold 3 firmware development has begun

Since Samsung won’t be launching a new Galaxy Note handset this year, all eyes are on the Galaxy Z Fold 3. It will also be accompanied by a new clamshell foldable which will likely be called the Galaxy Z Flip 2.

We have previously revealed that the new Galaxy Z Fold handset bears model number SM-F926. It will come with at least 256GB of storage. Android 11 will obviously be present alongside One UI 3.5.

This will be a new iteration of Samsung’s custom Android skin. There will likely be some new features that get introduced with One UI 3.5. We hear that the firmware for the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is now in development. This gives Samsung plenty of time to make any changes if need be before the handset is due to be unveiled.

If history is any indication, it’s possible that Samsung will target the August/September timeframe for the handset’s launch. We can expect more details about the new foldable to emerge till then.

This chart shows Samsung is in serious trouble

After disappointing sales of the Galaxy S20 series last year, Samsung bounced back with the Galaxy S21. It was reported that Galaxy S21 outsold its predecessor in the US, and sales have been 30% higher in South Korea. Its Q1 2021 earnings also point towards better sales of the Galaxy S21 series. However, the company still seems to have a huge problem in the smartphone segment, especially since the launch of the iPhone 12 series.

According to a new report from market research firm Counterpoint Research, there were only two Galaxy devices in the list of top 10 best-selling smartphones in the world for January 2021. The Galaxy A21s was at the seventh position, while the Galaxy A31 was at the ninth position. Apple grabbed six positions in the list, including the top four positions. The iPhone 12 was the world’s best-selling smartphone, while the iPhone 12 Pro Max, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 11, iPhone 12 mini, and the iPhone SE 2020 ranked second, third, fourth, eighth, and tenth, respectively.

Apple and Xiaomi are eating into Samsung’s market share

Even Xiaomi fared better than Samsung in the global smartphone market. The Redmi 9A and the Redmi 9 were the fifth and sixth best-selling smartphones globally in January 2021. Despite Xiaomi being absent from the North American smartphone market, its phones ranked better than Samsung smartphones. And that shows how serious the problem is for the South Korean smartphone giant. Xiaomi seems to be gradually eating into Samsung’s market share in the Middle East and Africa.

In the US, nine out of ten teens reportedly own an iPhone, and 90% of those users prefer upgrading to an iPhone. Hence, Samsung is going out of its way and trying to turn some iPhone users towards Galaxy smartphones. The company recently released a web app called iTest that shows iPhone users a taste of the Galaxy experience. The website allows users to experience One UI, Samsung’s stock apps, UI customization, and more.

Samsung has also massively improved its Galaxy A series smartphones this year with newer designs, powerful internals, better cameras, and 5G connectivity. The South Korean firm is looking to attract users of Honor smartphones in markets like Europe, Latin America, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East and Africa (MEA). Hopefully, the company will pull it back together with its improved Galaxy S and Galaxy A series smartphones and upcoming foldable smartphones in the pipeline.

Galaxy A52 and Galaxy A72 microSD support: An important thing to know

If you read our Galaxy A52 and Galaxy A72 reviews, you will know we came away impressed with both mid-range phones. Okay, so the Galaxy A72 isn’t that impressive, but that’s only because it’s a little too similar to the Galaxy A52 than we would have liked. Both the Galaxy A52/A52 5G and Galaxy A72 offer many flagship-like features for a considerably lower price than Samsung’s flagship phones and even offer something the latest flagships don’t: A headphone jack and support for microSD expansion.

MicroSD expansion is possible on pretty much every other Galaxy A series smartphone as well, including previous Galaxy A5x and A7x phones like the Galaxy A50/A51 and the Galaxy A70/A71. However, the Galaxy A52/A52 5G and Galaxy A72 do make a change that prospective customers need to know about: While microSD expansion is still available, it comes at the expense of proper dual SIM support.

Galaxy A52 and Galaxy A72 come with a hybrid card slot

On the Galaxy A52 and A72, you get a hybrid SIM and microSD slot, which means you can’t use two SIM cards and a microSD card at the same time. This is a limitation that has always been present on Samsung’s flagship phones ever since they gained dual SIM support a few years back, but it wasn’t the case on most of the company’s budget and mid-range devices, not until now.

And it’s something you might want to keep in mind if you are planning on purchasing the Galaxy A52 or Galaxy A72, especially if you’re moving from an older mid-range (or budget) Galaxy device. The A52 and A72 do offer you the option of 256GB storage for a little extra, but if would like to continue using two SIM cards and a microSD card together, you will be out of luck if you purchase either of these phones.
