Samsung’s smartphone sales dropped 10% in the US during Q2 2020

All recent market analysis reports show how COVID-19 has affected economies and smartphone sales worldwide. Yesterday, it was revealed that Samsung’s smartphone market share dropped by a whopping 60 percent in India during Q2 2020. However, things are not as bad in the US. A new report shows that the South Korean smartphone firm’s sales have dropped but not as much as its rivals.

According to the latest numbers compiled by market research firm Counterpoint Research, Samsung’s smartphone sales dropped 10 percent in the US during the second quarter of this year when compared to the numbers from Q2 2019. Rival firms Apple, LG, OnePlus, and Motorola showcased much lower sales. Apple’s sales dropped by 23 percent, while LG showcased a drop of 35 percent in smartphone sales.

OnePlus, Motorola, and ZTE were the biggest losers in the US market, showcasing drops of a whopping 60%, 62%, and 68%, respectively. The report states that most of this sales drop happened from mid-March to mid-April when most of the retail stores were closed due to the COVID-19 related lockdown. Smartphone sales in May and June actually grew week-on-week.

The report claims that Samsung saw 38 percent fewer Galaxy S20 activations during Q2 2020 when compared to Galaxy S10 activation numbers from Q2 2019. The company will start selling the Galaxy Note 20 and the Galaxy Z Flip 5G starting next month, which could improve sales figures. However, looking at the number of rising COVID-19 cases and deaths, no one can be sure as to what the market could look like later this year.

Galaxy Tab A7 (2020) specs confirmed via Google Play Console listing

It was revealed last week that Samsung could be working on an affordable tablet with a Snapdragon 662 processor. The name of the device was hinted via its Wi-Fi certification a few days ago, and it passed through the 3C certification process yesterday. Now, the Galaxy Tab A7 (2020) has appeared in Google Play Console listings, confirming its name and specifications.

The Galaxy Tab A7 (SM-T505) appears to feature the Snapdragon 662 processor (SDM662) with the Adreno 610 GPU clocked at 950MHz. The tablet has 3GB RAM and runs Android 10 (most probably with One UI 2.1). The source code of the Google Play Console listing reveals that it has a 10.4-inch display with 2000 x 1200 pixels resolution. The device will come in two storage variants: 32GB and 64GB.

The tablet’s FCC certification documents revealed two weeks ago that it will feature LTE, Wi-Fi b/g/n/ac, and Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity. The Galaxy Tab A7 (2020) will be powered by a 7,040mAh battery. It measures 247.6 x 157.36 x 293.37mm, and has a single rear-facing camera. The tablet could also be launched in a Wi-Fi-only variant (SM-T500).

The Galaxy Tab A7 (2020) could be released in a few weeks, and it could complement the Galaxy Tab S7 and the Galaxy Tab S7+. The tablets are expected to feature 120Hz Super AMOLED displays, an S Pen, Snapdragon 865+ processor, 6GB/8GB RAM, 128GB/256GB internal storage, microSD card slot, 13MP+5MP dual-camera setup, and a fingerprint reader.

Here’s the first look at a 360-degree Galaxy Note 20 Ultra render

Samsung is expected to reveal four new smartphones and two new wearables during its Galaxy Unpacked 2020 event on August 5. However, images and features of all those devices have been leaked already. After the company accidentally posted an image of the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra on its Russian website earlier this month, a 360-degree render of the smartphone was leaked earlier today.

Noted leakster Evan Blass (@evleaks) published a clear GIF of the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra in Mystic Bronze, showcasing the upcoming smartphone from various angles. The front of the device seems to feature a bezel-less Super AMOLED Infinity-O display, while the rear houses a chunky triple-camera setup and a Samsung logo. The power and volume buttons are on the right side of the phone.

Galaxy Note 20 Ultra specs

The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is expected to feature a 6.9-inch Super AMOLED display with QHD+ resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate, and an in-display ultrasonic fingerprint reader. The phone comes with a Bluetooth-enabled S Pen and stereo loudspeakers. The phone is expected to come equipped with the Exynos 990 or the Snapdragon 865+ processor, depending on the market. It will also feature 12GB/16GB RAM, 128GB/256GB/512GB internal storage, and a microSD card slot.

It was leaked earlier that the phone’s rear-facing triple-camera setup will feature a 108MP wide-angle camera, a 12MP ultrawide camera, and a 13MP telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom. It was recently revealed that the phone will offer 4K and 8K video recording options in the 21:9 aspect ratio using the camera app’s Pro Mode.

Other features such as 5G, LTE, GPS, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC, USB Type-C port, Samsung Pay, DeX, IP68 certification, Qi wireless charging, and reverse wireless charging can be expected. The phone will come powered by a 4,500mAh battery and it supports 45W fast charging. However, Samsung might only bundle a 25W charger with the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra.

The reasons why Samsung’s foldable flagships may never drop in price

As with most emerging technologies, foldable devices were expected to become cheaper as time went by, and many of us were hoping that the sequels to the Galaxy Fold will sell for lower prices with each new generation. However, this may never be the case. Seeing the recent reports about Samsung’s alleged plans to maintain the price of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 around the $2,000 mark (all the while dropping the free earbuds from the retail package), the company’s premium foldable series might not become more accessible anytime soon.

In other words, if you like the idea of owning a foldable flagship like the Galaxy Fold and you’re waiting for the technology to become more affordable before hopping on the bandwagon, you might have a long road ahead of you. We think there’s a strong possibility that Samsung’s premium foldable devices may never get a hefty price cut, and there are a couple of reasons why:

Flagships have historically gotten more expensive, not cheaper

Non-foldable smartphones have existed for a decade now, and one would think that Samsung’s flagship phones should have become more affordable 10 years after the launch of the original Galaxy S. In reality, the exact opposite has happened. This year’s Galaxy S20 series stands as proof that the company’s flagship phones have become more expensive, and there’s no evidence to suggest that this trajectory will change drastically in the near future.

Granted, if we look at older technologies in a vacuum, they have become cheaper in time. Nowadays, the display used by the original Galaxy S would probably cost a fraction of the original price, but that’s only because there’s no practical use for it anymore. In truth, older technologies have been replaced by newer ones, and with them came increasingly higher prices.

This could foreshadow the evolution of foldable flagships. Perhaps the impressive foldable display used in the original Galaxy Fold will drop in price over the next few years. But Samsung is bound to continue investing in R&D and improve the technology every year, meaning that launch prices for the final products are more likely to maintain rather than decrease.

Samsung still has no competition and that’s not a good thing for customers

It goes without saying that we’re fans of Samsung and we want the company to succeed. At the same time, we’re also customers, and what’s good for the company might not always be good for us. This seems to be the case with the way the company is marketing its foldable devices. Samsung is weeks away from unveiling its third foldable phone and it still has no real competition. It dominates the segment, so it makes the rules.

Last year when Huawei seemed like a potential threat to Samsung’s foldable phone business, the Korean giant may have considered ways in which it could make its Galaxy Fold sequels more affordable. But companies that don’t have competition look to get the maximum benefit out of their dominant position. It goes without saying that the industry will gradually jump on the foldable bandwagon but until that happens, expect Samsung to not give an inch.

If no other company can successfully pull off a viable foldable device, why would Samsung strive to lower its launch prices? Goodwill only goes so far, and big businesses will always aim to increase their profits. More so, the apparent failure of Samsung’s rivals to match its pace in the foldable segment further highlights that the company has something unique to offer, and it can feel justified to capitalize on its favorable position as it sees fit.

Unless a rival threatens the company’s dominance in the foldable segment, Samsung might never feel compelled to lower its prices, especially as long as tech enthusiasts will be willing to pay a premium for the latest and greatest technologies.

Samsung can still democratize foldable phones with a two-pronged approach

In a way, Samsung’s asking price for the Galaxy Z Fold 2 can be easily justified thanks to its eccentric nature. After all, it is a phone and a tablet combined, offering a level of flexibility that has yet to be matched by any other mobile device. With that in mind, we’re not necessarily arguing that $2,000 is an unfair price, only that Samsung’s earlier efforts to reduce costs have seemingly stagnated. This is something to consider if you are waiting for launch prices to drop before joining the foldable scene.

The good news for fans of the foldable concept is that Samsung may be thinking of other ways in which it can democratize foldable display technology. The Galaxy Z Flip itself is a more affordable alternative, and the company was also rumored to be working on a so-called Galaxy Fold Lite that would cost $1,100 instead of $2,000.

It would certainly make sense for Samsung to create more cost-effective solutions in parallel with its flagship foldable. This way, the company could bring foldable technology in the hands of more customers, all the while allowing itself to push the limits of its premium solution and maintain its leadership in the segment.

At the end of the day, we’re still hoping that Samsung will make its premium foldable devices more affordable in the coming years, but given the history of flagship smartphones and the current climate, this may never happen.

Samsung and Epic Games announce Fortnite Galaxy Cup and new skin

Samsung’s partnership with Fortnite developer Epic Games continues this year, and Fortnite mobile players are in for a treat once again. The two companies are launching a new tournament called Galaxy Cup, with participants having an opportunity to earn a unique Galaxy Scout outfit/skin as well as a Galaxy wrap.

Unlike the original Galaxy skin, the iKONIK skin, and the Fortnite Glow skin, all of which were originally obtainable exclusively by Galaxy smartphone owners, the new Galaxy Scout skin will be obtainable by Fortnite players who own any Android-powered smartphone. However, as the name implies, Galaxy Cup is a tournament, and the Galaxy Scout skin will be reserved for the top-performing players in each region, as follows:

  • Europe: Top 10,000 players
  • NA-East: Top 7,500 players
  • NA-West: Top 2,500 players
  • Latin America: Top 2,500 players
  • Asia: Top 1,250 players
  • Middle East: Top 1,250 players
  • Oceania: Top 1,250 players

The good news for players who might not make the cut is that the Galaxy wrap will be obtainable by anyone as long as they participate in five games during the competition. Registrations for Galaxy Cup will open today and the competition will run from July 25 to July 26. Fortnite players who want to participate are required to have their Epic accounts secured by Two-Factor Authentication, as specified by the official rules.

As for Fortnite players who might not be able to participate in Galaxy Cup, they will eventually be able to purchase the Galaxy Scout skin and Galaxy wrap from Epic’s in-game store, but no exact date was specified.

Today you can save 50% on the unlocked Galaxy Note 9

The Galaxy Note 9 is about to turn two years old but that doesn’t take away from the fact that it remains one of the most complete models in the S Pen series of flagships. And for the next 15 hours, the Galaxy Note 9 is even better thanks to an Amazon deal that slashes 50% off the full price.

You can save $500 on the factory unlocked Galaxy Note 9 with 128GB of storage, and $600 on the 512GB model by taking advantage of this limited-time offer. The 128GB model would normally cost $999 while the 512GB variant would set you back $1,249 at Amazon. Now you can buy the 2018 flagship for $499 or $649, respectively. The offer is valid only for the Lavender Purple color option.

It may be difficult to buy the Galaxy Note 9 just weeks ahead of the Galaxy Note 20 launch, however, the latter flagship will have a considerably higher price, and to be fair to the the Galaxy Note 9, it’s still a competent flagship. It even has a couple of features that have been removed from later models, such as an SpO2 sensor and a dedicated iris scanner. Even if it is nearly two years old, the Galaxy Note 9 recently got updated to One UI 2.1 so it delivers a much more complete software experience compared to when it was released.

Keep in mind that the clock is ticking, and as of this writing, the limited-time offer lasts for the next 15 hours. Check the links below if you want to learn more about the Galaxy Note 9 from our review or if you want to take advantage of this incredible Amazon deal.

New Galaxy Tab A7 (2020) inches closer to release, but is it relevant?

Fresh evidence has emerged to support the existence of a new mid-range tablet somewhere in Samsung’s development labs. As you might recall, a Snapdragon 662-powered Samsung tablet bearing model number SM-T505 popped up in online benchmarks last week, and now a different variant of the same tablet carrying model number SM-T500 has been spotted by 91mobiles in the database of China’s regulatory agency 3C.

There’s no doubt that the SM-T505 / SM-T500 tablet will hit the market as the Galaxy Tab A7 (2020). This was recently confirmed by certificates issued by the Wi-Fi Alliance. In addition, the moniker and model numbers have also been linked by Bluetooth earlier this month. The SM-T500 variant is bound to Wi-Fi connectivity, whereas the SM-T505 will have LTE support. Both models also take advantage of Bluetooth 5.0 and Wi-Fi 11 a/b/g/n/ac. The aforementioned Snapdragon 622 chipset will be paired with 3GB of RAM, and the tablet will ship with Android 10 out of the box.

Is there a place left on the market for 7-inch tablets?

Given the Galaxy Tab A7 (2020) moniker, it’s technically going to be a sequel to the Galaxy Tab A 7.0 (2016). It also means that it should have a 7-inch display, which begs the question of whether or not it has a place on the market in 2020. Samsung has almost achieved a 7-inch diagonal with its Galaxy S20 Ultra smartphone, and the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is expected to have a similar 6.9-inch footprint.

Of course, the Galaxy Tab A7 (2020) will have a squarer aspect ratio that would provide a different user experience, not to mention that the upcoming tablet is bound to fit in a much more affordable price range compared to the company’s flagship phones. But nevertheless, it seems a bit odd for Samsung to want to bring back 7-inch tablets four years after its last one was released. Up until this new model emerged, it looked as if the company abandoned this design and switched to an 8.4-inch format for its smallest Galaxy Tab A tablets. For whatever reason, Samsung may have had a change of heart.

Would you be interested in a new 7-inch Galaxy Tab A7? What would compel you to buy a tablet that seems relatively small by today’s standards? Leave a comment below.

How Samsung plans to lead the mobile industry through the ‘Next Normal’

Tae-moon Roh was appointed as the new boss for Samsung Mobile earlier this year. He took over the job from DJ Koh who continues to serve as the CEO of Samsung’s IT and mobile communications business. He stepped into the role at a time when the world hadn’t fully realized how badly the COVID19 pandemic would shake things up.

We have all had to adjust to this “new normal” in recent months. Working, traveling, socializing and even grocery shopping is no longer the way we have known it to be. Imagine leading a business like Samsung Mobile during these uncertain times. Not only is it crucial to the Samsung Group, but it also directly impacts the lives of countless people across the globe.

Samsung feels the need to innovate more than ever before

In a wide-ranging editorial that touches upon several different topics, TM Roh talks about how technology has a critical role in this new era which he considers the “Next Normal.” It powers distance learning for students who are unable to return to classrooms, enables you to keep up with your fitness regimen at home and even enjoy online concerts. All this and more has been enabled by mobile technology.

Samsung has worked with its partners to improve connectivity for users. It has worked with Google to optimize video calls, Microsoft to increase compatibility between Windows PCs and Galaxy phones, Netflix and Spotify to offer enhanced entertainment options. It will expand its gaming partnership with Xbox to give users even more to do on their devices.

Roh says that Samsung nows feels a “true sense of urgency” to give people new ways to communicate, work and connect so that society can continue to move forward. Hence the five new “power devices” that Samsung will be unveiling at its upcoming event. While obviously not named in his piece, these new devices will include the Galaxy Note 20 series, Galaxy Z Fold 2, Galaxy Tab S7/S7+, Galaxy Buds Live and the Galaxy Watch 3.

Roh mentions that Samsung has “super-charged” its product line and invested significantly in R&D over the last six months. Samsung remains committed to rolling out bold innovations and developing more ground-breaking products like foldable smartphones. It’s evident that foldables are not just an experiment for Samsung and it’s going to take the lead on this.

He also highlights Samsung’s operational agility that enabled the company to reimagine its upcoming devices so that they would better support users in these times. Samsung will stick with the pillars of innovation, collaboration and agility through the Next Normal and beyond.

The company will be showing off the fruits of its labor on August 5 at its first virtual Galaxy Unpacked that’s going to be broadcasting live from South Korea.

Leaked Galaxy Note 20 Ultra hands-on video shows off new features

The leaks are picking up the pace as we approach Samsung’s August 5 Galaxy Unpacked event. The Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Note 20 Ultra will finally be unveiled but till that happens, the leaks are giving us a great idea of what to expect.

A new, albeit rather short, hands-on video of the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra has leaked online today. It highlights some of the new camera functionality that will be present on the upcoming flagship device.

Take a look at some of the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra’s new features

Earlier reports had suggested that despite using a periscope camera system, the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra won’t offer the same 100x Space Zoom as the Galaxy S20 Ultra. Samsung is believed to have made meaningful improvements to the camera which would eliminate many of the pain points that afflicted the Galaxy S20 Ultra early on.

The maximum zoom level was reportedly being capped at 50x and that’s what this video shows. The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra will support 5x optical and up to 50x Space Zoom in 10x, 20x and 50x increments. Also highlighted in another recent report, the Pro video mode will give users the option to change resolution and will support video recording in an ultrawide 21:9 aspect ratio in up to 8K resolution.

A Histogram will also be available in Pro mode. It’s a tool that displays the tonal values of an image, allowing for a more precise image composition. The Pro video mode will allow users to choose between the front and rear microphones for audio recording, front and rear both or external microphones that are connected over Bluetooth or USB.

Scene describer is a new feature that Samsung has built for Bixby Vision. It’s going to be very useful for the visually impaired as they will be able to capture a scene with the device and have Bixby read out an audio description.

It appears that Android’s Nearby Share feature will come to Samsung devices with One UI 2.5, which is what the Galaxy Note 20 series will ship with out of the box. Nearby Share is Google’s very own AirDrop competitor. Samsung already brought a similar feature to its devices with One UI 2.1 called Quick Share. However, Quick Share only facilitates file and content transfers between Samsung devices. Nearby Sharing will work with any and all Android devices that support it.

The Galaxy Note 20 lineup is due to be unveiled on August 5 during Samsung’s virtual Galaxy Unpacked event.

The Galaxy Z Fold 2 is gorgeous, if this leaked blurry render is legitimate

Samsung’s second-gen top-tier foldable phone is only a couple of weeks away from its official unveiling, but similar to the original Galaxy Fold, the so-called Galaxy Z Fold 2 has been kept tightly under wraps. Although the Galaxy Note 20 has already been exposed in numerous leaked renders, an aura of mystery continues to surround the Galaxy Z Fold 2 even if both smartphone models are scheduled to be unveiled on the same date.

Fan renders have explored the foldable flagship’s potential design before, but today is the day when an actual official render of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 may have hit the scene. Twitter leaker @ishanagarwal24 recently shared a render of the alleged Galaxy Z Fold 2 earlier today. It’s on the blurry side so it’s difficult to be certain of its validity, but it may have given us a first look at the foldable phone’s final design.

Thinner bezels, a large cover display, and a more prominent camera housing

These characteristics are expected to define the evolution of Samsung’s foldable device, and blurry as it may be, the render at hand fully embraces these changes. More so, the device is depicted in the same bronze color that’s been ubiquitous in Samsung’s promotional material for Galaxy Unpacked 2020.

Sadly, even though the render at hand meets our initial expectations and doesn’t raise many suspicions, it’s still blurrier than we’d like and we can’t confirm its validity. It could be our very first early look at the Galaxy Z Fold 2’s actual design, or it could be just another fan render made to look as close to an official render as possible, with the blurriness filtering out any potential red flags.

Until a clearer render emerges before August 5, we advise you to exercise a bit of caution and stay on the safe side. But all these caveats aside, let’s assume for a moment that the render is indeed accurate, and if it is, do you think Samsung has done enough to push the Galaxy Z Fold 2 to the next level? We think it looks gorgeous with all the right design changes in tow, and it’s difficult not to let ourselves carried away. But again, we’ll have to wait a bit longer before we can be certain of anything. Share your thoughts in the comment section.

Update: as seen in the gallery below, the same source also posted a couple of thumbnails of the Galaxy Note 20, the Galaxy Watch 3, and the Galaxy Buds Live, all in the same bronze color and matching earlier leaks. This could mean that the blurry Galaxy Z Fold 2 render might indeed be accurate!

Galaxy S20 Fan Edition may come in October for $750 with these cameras

We have known for a while now that Samsung is going to release a watered-down version of the Galaxy S20. Since our initial confirmation, more information about the Galaxy S20 Fan Edition has surfaced.

The latest revelation is about the camera setup that Samsung will slap on the Galaxy S20 Fan Edition. Then there’s the suggested pricing which might actually be slightly more than what the Galaxy S10 Lite was sold for.

Galaxy S20 Fan Edition camera, pricing and release details

As flagship smartphones have become increasingly expensive over the years, it was important for Samsung to offer a “Lite” model that captured customers who didn’t necessarily want to spend over $1,000 on a phone but wanted a near-flagship experience. It did that with the Galaxy S10 Lite which was very well received.

Samsung will have to perform a similar balancing act for the Galaxy S20 Fan Edition. It has to make substantial cuts to bring the price down but also offer enough value in the device that it stands out from the Galaxy A series. One of the ways it will do that is by using the Snapdragon 865 chipset for the Galaxy S20 Fan Edition globally. The handset will have at least 6GB RAM and 128GB internal storage.

Recent rumors had suggested that Samsung’s new 50-megapixel ISOCELL GN1 camera sensor might be used for this device. However, a report out of South Korea predicts a fairly basic camera setup for this device. It will consist of a 12-megapixel wide-angle, 12-megapixel ultra-wide and an 8-megapixel telephoto sensor with 3x optical zoom. There won’t be a ToF or macro camera at the back. A 32-megapixel selfie camera will be present.

The Galaxy S20 and Galaxy S20+ both feature the same 12MP wide and ultra-wide sensors but have a 64MP telephoto camera. The Galaxy S20+ also has a ToF sensor. The upcoming device’s screen size is expected to be between 6.5 to 6.7-inches, meaning that it would likely sit between the 6.2-inch Galaxy S20 and 6.7-inch Galaxy S20+.

The report claims that Samsung is going to release the Galaxy S20 Fan Edition in October this year and plans to ship 5 million units by the end of this year. The price tag might be 900,000 won which is the equivalent of ~$750. For those keeping track, the Galaxy S10 Lite cost $650 when it went on sale back in January.

Galaxy Z Flip 5G is launching sooner than expected

The Galaxy Z Flip 5G, Samsung’s next somewhat affordable and completely foldable smartphone is launching sooner than anticipated, at least as far as China is concerned. Namely, the company just scheduled its next product event in the Far Eastern country for Wednesday. This Wednesday, July 22nd. Up until now, all signs were pointing to an August 5th announcement happening alongside the reveal of the Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Tab S7 series.

Mind you, that may still hold true as it wouldn’t be out of the ordinary for Samsung’s Chinese arm not to mimic its parent’s global moves. If those were guaranteed to work in China, Samsung would have likely held on to at least a single percentage point of that lucrative market by 2020 – but they aren’t, so it didn’t.

It’s safe to assume the Galaxy Z Flip 5G won’t be huge in China

Granted, it’s hard to expect Samsung to compete with China’s domestic brands, even if it’s making its products across the street. The reality of any foreign business operating in the country is that it’s impossible not to get undercut by domestic rivals in the long term. If anything, Samsung’s business in China is doing amazingly overall in spite of falling into irrelevance in the smartphone space. How long will that remain true remains to be seen, though Samsung is definitely aware its time is ticking away, as suggested by the fact it focused its investments elsewhere.

Regarding the Galaxy Z Flip 5G in particular: it’s the Galaxy Z Flip (our review), but with 5G and the Snapdragon 865 processor. What more would you possibly need to know? In all seriousness, it also has a brand new color. Now, that kind of genius design iteration will surely help Samsung claw its way back to smartphone brand relevance in China; there’s simply no other feasible outcome to the release of something named as elegantly as the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5G.

Samsung slips further in Indian smartphone market during Q2 2020

Samsung’s smartphone market share has been falling in India due to intense competition from Chinese brands like Xiaomi, OPPO, and Vivo. The company lost its number one position to Xiaomi three years ago and in Q1 2020, the company slipped to the number three position, making way for Vivo to grab the second position in the Indian smartphone market.

In Q2 2020, Samsung’s market share slipped further to 16.8 percent as the company managed to sell just 2.9 million smartphones. Compared to 7.3 million units in Q2 2019, the South Korean firm managed to sell 60 percent fewer units in the second quarter of this year. Samsung’s smartphone market share in India during Q2 2019 was 22.1 percent.

Samsung the only smartphone brand in the top five players with a reduced market share

Xiaomi’s shipments fell, too, but it managed to improve its market share from 30.9 percent a year ago to 31.3 percent during Q2 2020. Vivo shipped 3.7 million units and improved its market share from 17.5 percent to 21.3 percent during the same period. OPPO and Realme shipped 2.2 million and 1.7 million smartphone units, respectively, increasing their market shares at the expense of Samsung’s.

While the Indian smartphone market shrunk to half during the pandemic, Samsung was the only brand among the top five players to see a decreased market share during Q2 2020. The company’s rivals are offering more feature-packed smartphones at lower prices, attracting more consumers. While the South Korean brand has improved its mid-range smartphones, slower Exynos chipsets are not helping its cause.

Samsung India is planning to launch newer Galaxy M series smartphones with more features and lower prices, and the company has a chance to prove itself amid anti-China sentiments. However, it needs to be seen if that helps the company in improving its market share in India.
