Samsung probably isn’t done fixing its fingerprint sensor problem yet

Yes, this is yet another of those articles about Samsung’s fingerprint sensor, although it’s been a while since we had much reason to complain. But recently leaked renders of the Galaxy S10e that confirm a side-mounted sensor embedded in the power button have made me realize Samsung isn’t done fixing its fingerprint sensor problem, at least not completely.

The Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+ are getting an in-display fingerprint sensor, and it looks to be quite ergonomically placed based on the freshly leaked images of an actual S10+. But at the same time, it seems the power button on the Galaxy S10e is placed a bit too high up. Now, I realize that the smaller bezels mean the Galaxy S10e will be more compact compared to the Galaxy S9 despite a 5.8-inch screen on both. It’s still a cause for concern, though.

I personally would never go for the smaller Galaxy S flagship and it will be the same this year, but how is it that Samsung continues to have issues with placing the fingerprint sensor in the ideal location? It was two years ago that the Galaxy S8 came along and asked us to adjust to a sensor placement that mostly favored those with ET-like fingers. Here in 2019, it looks like the problem isn’t completely solved.

Worse still, there is not going to an iris sensor on this year’s flagships. Fingerprint and facial recognition are going to be the only two options (and we all know facial recognition is far from the quickest or most accurate biometric method). I sure am hoping I’m wrong and the Galaxy S10e allows easy access to the fingerprint sensor for people of varying hand sizes. But, if it doesn’t, it may just end up defeating the purpose of a compact flagship.

What do you think?

These Galaxy S10+ live images confirm in-display fingerprint sensor

Think you’ve seen enough live images of the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+? Think again. We reported about leaked images of the Galaxy S10e just this morning and now more have surfaced for the other two models. These images won’t surprise you given that there’s nothing that we haven’t already seen.

Such leaks are common this close to the official launch. More units find their way out of the company’s hands as it gears up to launch the new flagship. This means the possibility of people taking photos and sharing them increases. We’ll see more of them in the coming days.

In-display fingerprint sensor confirmed by Galaxy S10+ live images

These live images of the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+ came from Saudi Arabia. It’s an unlikely place for tech leaks to originate but it goes to show that units are now out in preparation of the upcoming launch. It’s difficult to say where the images have been captured. One could assume they were shot by an enthusiastic worker at a local PR agency or perhaps in Samsung’s own offices.

That’s beside the point, though. What we see here is clear confirmation of the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+’s design. Both handsets will feature a triple camera at the back and slightly more boxy design. Look closely at the first picture and you’ll see where you’ll have to place your fingerprint on the in-display fingerprint sensor. This confirms endless rumors that Samsung’s next flagship will be its first with a display-based fingerprint sensor.

Another leaked image has shown off the PowerShare feature and its ability to charge the new Galaxy Buds wirelessly. Samsung will have little to surprise you with on February 20 as far as the design is concerned. It will be interesting to see what new software features it has built for these devices. The Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+ will be unveiled in San Francisco. It’s expected to open pre-orders the following day ahead of the release on March 8.

Galaxy S10+ seen using PowerShare to wirelessly charge new Galaxy Buds

Not long after we exclusively reported that Samsung was working on new wireless earbuds, certifications started popping up, hinting of an impending launch. It’s believed that Samsung will call them the Galaxy Buds as the company is moving its wearable devices to the Galaxy branding. It has done that with the Galaxy Watch and will also do so for the upcoming Galaxy Sport.

A new image has been leaked online by a reliable source which shows a Galaxy S10+ wirelessly charging the Galaxy Buds in their carrying case. Those of you who have been paying attention know that the Galaxy S10+ will have a reverse wireless charging feature.

Galaxy S10+’s PowerShare feature depicted in action

The image is likely from marketing materials that Samsung has prepared for the upcoming flagship. It clearly shows new wireless earbuds in a carrying case resting on the back of the Galaxy S10+. The LEDs highlight that the earbuds are being charged wirelessly.

We have already reported that the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+ will have a feature called PowerShare. It will enable the device to wirelessly charge other devices. The feature will thus be perfect for charging up accessories like the Galaxy Buds and possibly the smartwatches as well. The Galaxy Buds will most likely be unveiled by Samsung on February 20. That’s when it officially launches the Galaxy S10 in San Francisco. The report mentions that they will cost 149 euro ($170).

Samsung is reportedly going to start taking pre-orders for the Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+ on February 21. In major markets like the United States and South Korea, the devices will likely be released on March 8.

Samsung showcases 8K QLED signage and The Wall at ISE 2019

Samsung introduced many 8K QLED TVs and a monstrous 219-inch The Wall MicroLED display at CES 2019 last month. The company is now showcasing variants of the same technology, aimed at business users, at the ongoing Integrated Systems Europe 2019 trade show in Amsterdam. On display at the event are Samsung’s innovations such as 8K QLED signage, The Wall in 8K and 292-inch variants, Multi-Link LED HDR technology, etc.

Building on its 8K QLED TVs, Samsung is now bringing 8K QLED signage, along with 8K LED solutions, for businesses to advertise their products and services. At ISE 2019, the company showcased an 82-inch 8K QLED signage display with AI upscaling technology that can convert anything from SD to 4K to look like 8K content. The display is 40 mm thin and can be easily integrated into many environments without requiring much space.

The Wall now has an 8K variant

At the same event, Samsung is also displaying a larger and 8K version of its already-monstrous The Wall MicroLED display. At 292 inches, The Wall 8K on display at ISE is larger and sharper than the 4K variants ranging from 73 to 219 inches seen at CES this year. The bigger size shouldn’t be much of a surprise as The Wall is a large-format modular display whose size can be altered by adding or removing display modules. Samsung says it will be available for purchase in the first half of 2019 to commercial customers.

Along with these display innovations, Samsung also announced 8K HDR technology named Multi-Link LED HDR for signage solutions. The company says its Multi-Link LED HDR converts content to HDR quality without special metadata by using a proprietary algorithm. The technology boasts various other advances such as Inverse Tone Mapping (ITM) for glare-free images, Dynamic Peaking for high brightness values, Color mapping, low latency for Live mode, simpler cable management. etc. It supports all Samsung SMART LED signage products, including The Wall.

Galaxy Note S Pen with a camera? Probably not happening

You may have seen a couple of reports today about Samsung possibly integrating a camera into the S Pen. Some believe that this is another solution from the company for completely notch and hole-free smartphones. These reports are based on a patent recently granted by the USPTO after Samsung filed for it in February 2017.

There are quite a few reasons as to why an S Pen with a camera is probably not happening. Rather, it appears to be one of the many ideas that Samsung just patents and forgets about. After all, it’s better to have a patent on something that may or may not see the light of day.

Patent that details an S Pen with a camera is from 2016

Patently Mobile brought this patent to the blogosphere’s attention after the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office granted it. The patent envisages an S Pen stylus which has a camera that provides superior optical zoom functionality. Since most devices rely on digital zoom due to space constraints, this idea might seem like a breakthrough.

Since it sounded too good to be true, we dug around a bit and found that Samsung originally filed this patent in Korea on February 29, 2016 (leap year). So it has been three years since this invention was dreamt up and nothing has come of it, as is the case with most patents. The illustrations in the patent suggested that a camera sensor would be fit in the upper chamber of the S Pen with the optical zoom being controlled by a separate button. The sensor would be hooked up to at least one or more lenses.

Patents never say if a particular invention is meant for a specific device. However, since the S Pen only comes with the Galaxy Note handsets, it was assumed by many that this feature could come in a future Galaxy Note flagship. Consider this, though, it has been three years since Samsung originally filed this patent. There have been a grand total of zero S Pen with an integrated camera.

This isn’t the first patent from Samsung that envisions a greater role for the S Pen. A patent filed in 2014 detailed how a microphone and speaker could be integrated into the S Pen. No progress has been made on that front in five years. Samsung’s head of technology strategy Chai Won-cheol did say in 2017 that the company is conducting studies to see if a microphone can be integrated into the stylus. That being said, there’s no guarantee that it will happen.

Another such patent detailed how a Galaxy Note handset’s stylus can double as a breathalyzer courtesy of its built-in gas sensor. The idea being that this will enable adult users to quickly check if they’re over the legal limit for alcohol. This patent was filed in June 2016 and three years on, blowing into Galaxy Note 9’s S Pen will just make people think you partied a little too hard last night.

The fickle nature of patents aside, a camera in the S Pen presents some technical challenges as well. Can you imagine how difficult it will be to keep your hand steady as you try to take pictures with a stylus? Even if Samsung fits it with Optical Image Stabilization it’s not going to be a walk in the park. On to the question of enabling greater optical zoom without adding a bulky camera module to the phone. We have already mentioned in some detail how Samsung’s reported acquisition of Corephotonics can vitalize its mobile cameras. Corephotonics has designed 5x and 10x zoom cameras for Oppo and its technology would be very useful for Samsung.

Therefore, it’s always better to think objectively about what patents present us with. As we have mentioned time and again, not everything that gets patented ever sees the light of day. There’s not much evidence to support the theory of an S Pen with a camera at this point in time. Maybe technology can advance enough in the next decade to make this a possibility. It’s difficult to see this happening in the next few years.

Galaxy S10 to have OIS and 4K@60fps video recording on front camera?

You wouldn’t expect any major surprises about an upcoming flagship so close to its official launch, but that’s exactly what we’re getting today. Some users on Weibo have apparently said that the Galaxy S10’s front camera will get optical image stabilization (OIS) and support for recording 4K videos at 60 frames per second (fps). While OIS on front cameras isn’t new, there isn’t any phone on the market that can take 4K videos at 60fps with the front camera. And, well, there isn’t any phone that has both OIS and 4K@60fps support in the front camera.

This is one of those rumors you find hard to believe, and the Weibo link for this particular rumor isn’t mentioned on the website that is citing Weibo as the source. But could these features actually be available on the Galaxy S10? Well, going by how big that front camera cutout on the Galaxy S10 is looking in leaked live images of the device, it would certainly be nice if the front camera has a few extra tricks up its sleeve.

Even the rear camera is reportedly going to have GoPro-level image stabilization, but since we’ve not heard anything on this front before, it’s best to file this rumor in the “that’s not happening” cabinet. Again, such camera upgrades would be welcome, especially for the selfie camera since it’s going to be an eyesore (particularly on the S10+, which has dual front cameras), and whether that will actually be the case is something we’ll find out soon enough.

Ceramic Black Galaxy S10+ breaks cover in leaked render

It has been renders galore recently for Samsung’s upcoming flagship smartphone. A render for the Ceramic Black Galaxy S10+ has now leaked online. We had exclusively confirmed three months ago that the Galaxy S10+ would be available wth a ceramic back. It appears that this finish will be marketing as “Ceramic Black.”

It’s compared to the regular Prism Black finish in this render. The differences are subtle but certainly noticeable. The ceramic back has a slight metallic/brownish tint to it as mentioned in a recent report.

Leaked render shows off the Ceramic Black Galaxy S10+

Reports suggest that the ceramic back finish will only be available with the most expensive Galaxy S10+ model. That would be the one with 12GB of RAM and 1TB of internal storage. It’s going to cost a pretty penny for sure, over $1,700 by some estimates.

Whether or not the Ceramic Black Galaxy S10+ is offered in all markets remains to be seen. Not a lot of customers would be able to justify spending that much money on a smartphone, even if it has a terabyte of internal storage. Particularly since you can still have 1TB of storage in your pocket by pairing a 512GB model with a microSD card of the same capacity. That’s how Samsung marketed the Galaxy Note 9.

The ceramic material on the back would obviously provide a different feel compared to glass. The tint that we see in this render appears to extend to the frame as well. Samsung has reportedly used a special process to create this ceramic material which is more scratch and drop resistant.

Samsung will confirm all of these details at its press event on February 20. Going by what you see in this render, would you think about splurging for the Ceramic Black Galaxy S10+? Do let us know in the comments below.

Samsung Family Hub to double up as a dating service via an app

Common food preferences often go a long way in determining the fate of romantic connections. Samsung has taken this concept to the next level via their latest dating app called Refrigerdating. The app works with the Samsung Family Hub Refrigerator by taking a photograph of your fridge’s insides. Refrigerdating will then ‘match’ you with people that have similar looking fridges. You can then swipe right or left based on how the contents of someone else’s fridge appear to you.

You can even take a photo with your phone if the prospect of posting images via a refrigerator comes off as too radical. The insides of one’s fridge often provide valuable insight into how one lives, so it may help boost your chances much better than any heavily-filtered image used on social media. Elin Axelsson, a PR manager at Samsung Electronics Nordic, states, “We hope people can meet under more honest or transparent circumstances with the help of the contents of the fridge because that can tell you a lot about the personality.”

Refrigerdating is available on all Samsung Smart Hubs

The app can easily be installed on all Samsung smart appliances and phones via a web browser. Samsung hasn’t revealed anything in the way of numbers just yet so the number of daily active users is unknown. The company even worked with a relationship expert while developing the app and advice users not to ‘go styling your fridge now’.

Currently, a majority of the app’s users are based in Sweden, where the idea appears to have originated. According to the European Union’s statistical office, nearly half of all households in the country consist of single adults without kids, so it’s a good place to start. Head over to this link and sign up if you want to give the app a try. The app is available globally for everyone.

Samsung to launch three new Galaxy A devices in India soon

Samsung will soon be launching three new Galaxy A devices, the Galaxy A10, Galaxy A20 and the Galaxy A30, in India. The report comes only a day after the company’s online-exclusive Galaxy M10 and Galaxy M20 went on sale in the country.

Samsung has as many as nine Galaxy A devices lined up for release in the first half of 2019. The Galaxy A10, A20, and the A30 are likely to go on sale in India by the end of the first quarter.

Galaxy A will focus on the offline segment

The upcoming Galaxy A devices were recently spotted on the Geekbench benchmark database. The listings revealed that all of the three devices will be powered by an Exynos 7885 octa-core processor. The Geekbench listings also revealed that the A10 will come with 2GB RAM, while the A20 and A30 will come with 3GB and 4GB of RAM, respectively. On the software front, all three Galaxy A devices will launch with Android 9 Pie out of the box.

Samsung targeted the newly launched Galaxy M series at the online segment. The upcoming Galaxy A series smartphones are now said to focus mainly on the offline segment. And unlike the M series devices, which featured a TFT LCD display, the Galaxy A devices will come with an AMOLED display, although it’s possible not all of them will have an AMOLED display since Samsung is expected to bring LCD displays to the Galaxy A lineup in 2019.

Samsung, however, is still expected to price the devices aggressively to fend off the Chinese competition. The Galaxy A10 is said to start at INR 8,490 (roughly $120), just INR 500 more than the Galaxy M10.

Galaxy S10 India launch rumored to be taking place on March 6th

Samsung could launch the Galaxy S10 in India on March 6th, two days before the phone is expected to go on sale in countries like the US and South Korea. The information comes via a report from the folks over at 91Mobiles, who cite a Samsung distributor as their source. March 6th is also the date on which the Galaxy S9 and S9+ were announced in India last year, but sales of the S10 will apparently start on March 15th, a day earlier than when the S9 and S9+ went on sale in the country.

The report also suggests that pricing for the three S10 models in India will vary wildly. The flat screen-toting Galaxy S10e’s price will reportedly start at ₹50,000 (roughly $700), the S10 will cost around ₹65,000 (roughly $910), and the S10+ will start at ₹75,000 (roughly $1,050). While the prices for the S10 and S10+ seem logical and in line with Samsung’s current pricing strategy for its flagships in India, pricing for the Galaxy S10e seems to be rather low.

With the European pricing for the smallest model expected to start at €750, it seems unlikely Samsung will offer the device to Indian consumers for a considerably lower price. Of course, it’s not completely out of the realm of possibility, since the lack of a curved screen and in-display fingerprint sensor along with fewer rear cameras and a smaller battery do make the S10e considerably less feature-packed than its bigger siblings.

More details about the Indian launch should show up as we inch closer to the Galaxy S10’s official unveiling, and that goes for the launch in other markets as well. In some countries, Samsung will start taking pre-orders for the Galaxy S10 from February 21, a couple of weeks ahead of the March 8 release date.

Samsung 837 in NYC will let public play with Galaxy S10 right after launch

Samsung will be opening Galaxy S10 pre-orders on February 21, but sales are expected to begin on March 8. That means getting to try the Galaxy S10 at a store won’t be immediately possible after the flagship goes official, unless you happen to be in New York City and visit the Samsung 837 store right when the Unpacked livestream is taking place. Samsung has announced that it will allow the public to try their hands on the Galaxy S10 at Samsung 837 right after the official announcement ends.

The Samsung 837 store was designed for the purpose of letting consumers try out new products from the company, and since the Galaxy S10 is going to be unveiled in San Francisco instead of at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, it makes sense for the Galaxy S10 to be available at Samsung’s biggest ‘experience center’ in the US. You probably won’t be able to place orders for the phone at Samsung 837, though, since Samsung 837 was always envisioned as a place for people to experience the Korean giant’s products rather than as a typical store.

To be able to visit Samsung 837 for the Galaxy S10 livestream and public hands-on, you will need to sign up at Samsung’s official Galaxy Unpacked Livestream webpage. Just tap/click the RSVP button there to register and reserve your sport at the event (you’ll need to login to your Samsung account). The livestream starts at 1 PM on February 20.

I hope the 6.1-inch Galaxy S10’s battery endurance doesn’t disappoint

This year, Samsung’s going to spoil us for choice with its tenth anniversary Galaxy S flagship by launching three different models. Well, maybe spoil isn’t the right term, since it will pretty much be the Galaxy S10+ that one will have to choose if they want the best of everything. From screen size through battery capacity to dual front cameras, the S10+, like all previous Plus models of Galaxy S flagships, will be the most feature-packed option.

But it’s probably the 6.1-inch Galaxy S10 that will sell more because of a price that sits somewhere above the entry-level Galaxy S10e but is more palatable S10+ (some might even ignore the S10+ just because of that wider screen cutout). And if that turns out to be the case, I really hope it doesn’t disappoint with its battery life.

One model with a big battery, two without?

While it’s great that Samsung is going to offer different variants, including one with a flat screen, adding a third model means there are now going to be two variants of the newest Galaxy S flagship that don’t get a big battery. Based on certifications, we currently know that the Galaxy S10e is going to have a 3,000 mAh battery, the Galaxy S10 is going to have a 3,300 mAh battery, and the Galaxy S10+ will get a 4,000 mAh battery like the Galaxy Note 9. And it’s the battery capacity of the Galaxy S10 that is a cause for concern.

It was initially expected that the 6.1-inch Galaxy S10 would have a 3,500 mAh battery like the Galaxy S8+ and Galaxy S9+. But it seems Samsung has decided to go for the same battery capacity as the Galaxy Note 8. As usual, the company will tell us the new processors inside the Galaxy S10 are more efficient, as they will be built on an 8/7nm process instead of a 10nm process like the 2018 Exynos and Snapdragon chips.

However, these efficiency improvements rarely factor into real-world battery performance unless the device is sitting idle with the screen off. I can’t help but feel that Samsung is once again trying to push smaller batteries on us and will probably use having three Galaxy S10 models for consumers to choose from as the excuse.

Fingers crossed 6.1-inch Galaxy S10’s battery life is respectable

And you might say that the Galaxy Note 8 did well enough with a 3,300 mAh capacity battery so the S10 might as well, and I won’t dispute that. I’m not really saying the battery life on the Galaxy S10 will be poor or below respectable levels, because we can’t exactly come to a conclusion before we can test the phone out for ourselves.

But I’m surely going to keep my fingers crossed that it does end up surprising us on the endurance front. Or, you know, have a bigger battery than what the leaks and certifications currently tells us so we don’t have any reason to worry.

What do you think?
