Samsung is reportedly thinking about splitting into two

Two months ago a big US hedge fund called Elliott Associates proposed that Samsung Electronics – the crown jewel of the Samsung Group – should be split into two as it’s undervalued by as much as 70 percent due to the company’s “unnecessarily complex” corporate structure. The proposal calls for splitting Samsung Electronics into a holding company for ownership purposes and an operating company. It also called on the company to pay a one-time special dividend of $27 billion from its reserves, commit to dole out at least 75 percent of free cash as dividends going forward and even appoint some independent directors to the board. Samsung hasn’t really taken a stance on the hedge fund’s proposal, it has only said that it will “carefully consider” the proposal.

Samsung’s board of directors will meet tomorrow and offer a formal response to Elliott’s proposal, according to a report published today by the Seoul Economic Daily. The company appears to be thinking about splitting itself into two according to an unnamed source mentioned in the report.

Elliott Associates and Samsung have a tricky relationship which I have explained in quite a bit of detail in my opinion piece about why Samsung is likely to work with the hedge fund this time around. Samsung obviously won’t do everything that the hedge fund is proposing and it’s also going to engage with it on its own terms but analysts are of the view that this is something that the heir apparent Jay Y. Lee is interested in as well since it would further cement the founding Lee family’s control over the Samsung empire.

Samsung’s reorganization efforts have intensified under Lee’s watch as we’ve seen the company sell non-core assets and invest in areas where it believes growth lies in the future.

Galaxy S8 rumored to feature 6GB RAM and 256GB internal storage

We will continue to hear conflicting reports about the Galaxy S8′s specifications until the handset is actually launched early next year so don’t completely put your faith in one such rumor or report just yet. Word on the street in China is that the Galaxy S8 will feature 6GB of RAM and that it’s going to offer storage options of up to 256GB.

If this is true, it will be a departure from the strategy that Samsung used with the Galaxy S7 which features just 32GB of internal storage but also supports external expansion via microSD card. Samsung decided to bring back the microSD card slot with the Galaxy S7 after taking a lot of flak for removing it from the Galaxy S6. This new strategy would mean that Samsung matches Apple’s latest iPhone in terms of storage as the iPhone 7 can also be had with up to 256GB of internal storage.

It’s not a simple equation when it comes to RAM. Just because a handset has 8GB of RAM doesn’t mean that it’s going to perform better than a handset with 6GB of RAM. There are many different variables that dictate device performance so it’s never just one component. 6GB of RAM for the Galaxy S8 can be viewed as a logical step up but previous rumors of 8GB RAM for the Galaxy S8 appear to be overkill, at least in my opinion, though I should point out here that just last month Samsung introduced the industry’s first 8GB LPDDR4 mobile DRAM package.

Samsung is expected to launch the Galaxy S8 at Mobile World Congress 2017 in February.

Galaxy C7 Pro benchmark reveals Snapdragon 625 processor

We first reported exclusively about two months ago that Samsung is working on the Galaxy C7 Pro and the Galaxy C5 Pro. The Galaxy C7 Pro has now been spotted on Geekbench where it has revealed some specifications such as its Snapdragon 625 processor. The unit used for benchmark had Android 6.0.1 pre-installed and also touted 4G of RAM. The Galaxy C7 Pro is expected to feature a 5.7-inch full HD display as well.

As per the benchmark result, the Galaxy C7 Pro posted a score of 1000 on the single-core test and 5679 on the multi-core test. It was put through its paces on the benchmarking website several times and the result was almost the same each time. From the looks of it this is going to be a decent mid-range smartphone that may also offer features like Samsung Pay given that the Galaxy C7 Pro is likely to feature NFC and a fingerprint sensor. No further information is available about this device right now. A recent rumor suggests that Samsung is going to launch the Galaxy C5 Pro and the Galaxy C7 Pro next month.

Samsung Pay on Gear S3 not compatible with Google Pixel smartphones

Samsung’s latest smartwatch – the Gear S3 – comes with support for Samsung Pay straight out of the box. Samsung soon made a server-side update after the Gear S3 was released to enable Samsung Pay for all customers of the wearable device. That’s not even the best part. Samsung Pay on Gear S3 works when the device is paired to any Android device running Android 4.4 or higher so it doesn’t necessarily require a Samsung smartphone to function. You can use it with most major Android handsets except the Google Pixel devices.

Yesterday we shared a video which shows Samsung Pay on Gear S3 working with an LG V20. The video goes to show that it’s just as easy to use Samsung Pay on Gear S3 using a non-Samsung device than it is using a device by the company itself.

However, this functionality is not available to owners of the Google Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones. Someone reached out to the official Samsung Pay Twitter account and asked why he was getting an “Installation Failed. Try again” error when trying to install Samsung Pay on the Pixel XL. The official response was that Samsung Pay on Gear S3 “is not available with Pixel devices.”

It’s unclear why Samsung Pay on Gear S3 isn’t compatible with one of the hottest Android smartphones on the market right now but it may very well be in the future. “We’re constantly working to expand Samsung Pay to new devices – stay tuned!,” adds the official Samsung Pay Twitter account.

Samsung reportedly gives up on Magneti Marelli acquisition

We first heard about Samsung’s interest in auto parts giant Magneti Marelli earlier this year when it was reported that the Korean company was interested in acquiring this Fiat Chrysler subsidiary. Samsung interest was said to be in Magneti Marelli’s telematics, entertainment and lighting capabilities and was expected to pay as much as $3 billion for it. Then the Galaxy Note 7 happened and Samsung decided to put the deal on the back burner a couple of months ago.

Samsung has now put the Galaxy Note 7 behind it and made several major business decisions over the past couple of months, including but not limited to its acquisition of Harman International for $8 billion. According to a new report Samsung has decided to give up on acquiring Magneti Marelli as it wants to avoid an overlapping investment. “Samsung was going to take over Haman and Magneti Marelli at the same time, but eventually buying Haman and gave up buying Magneti Marelli,” an industry watcher is cited in the report as saying.

It’s also mentioned that talks between Samsung and Fiat Chrysler broke down over price as the latter was asking for too much in Samsung’s view and the company wasn’t willing to go that high. It eventually scrapped plans to acquire Magneti Marelli and decided to go after Harman with which it also got a portfolio of some of the most popular consumer audio brands in the world.

This video shows Samsung Pay on the Gear S3 working with an LG V20

Earlier this week, Samsung rolled out a much-requested server-side update for the Gear Manager application, enabling Gear S3 owners to make payments using Samsung Pay even if their watch isn’t paired with a Galaxy-branded smartphone — and now we’re getting our first look at the feature in action.
