Galaxy S8 pre-orders to commence on April 10th, sell worldwide on April 21st

Samsung has confirmed its March 29th announcement date for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ (even at MWC 2017), but the pre-order and sales dates have been up for grabs. That hasn’t stopped one report out of Korea that claims the Galaxy S8 will go on sale worldwide on Friday, April 21st, but little pre-order information has surfaced until now.

A new report says that Galaxy S8 pre-orders will commence on April 10th, nearly two weeks after the announcement and approximately a week and a half before worldwide sales get off the ground (a few days earlier than the April 15th date rumored several weeks ago).

The Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+, according to a leaked spec sheet, are said to feature 5.8 and 6.2-inch Infinity Displays, respectively, thanks to a brand new trademark application, either Qualcomm’s octa-core Snapdragon 835 or Samsung’s homegrown Exynos 8895 SoC, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of base storage with the coveted microSD card slot for expandable storage, 8MP front/12MP Dual Pixel rear camera combo, iris camera/scanner, and either a 3,250mAh (S8) or 3,750mAh (S8+) battery, depending on model with Android 7.0 pre-installed. Samsung intends to bring the Tab S3′s new AKG audio to its Galaxy smartphone lineup, and the Galaxy S8 will be the first to offer AKG earphones in the box.

On the software front, buyers will get on-screen software navigation buttons this year that may be customizable, and proper PC-like functionality by way of Samsung’s upcoming Desktop eXperience that’ll connect to and work well with an external monitor. There’s still that Beast Mode that could showcase the next Galaxy’s sheer, raw performance at a moment’s notice. Samsung has already started updating its proprietary apps to reflect the new UI of the next “Galaxy.”

Hands-on Samsung’s C-Lab project: VuildUs

Samsung has brought its C-Lab division along to Barcelona for the Mobile World Congress 2017 where it’s showcasing four new virtual reality projects. The four projects that have been showcased include Relumino, TraVRer, Monitorless and VuildUs.

In this post you’ll find out everything there is to know about VuildUs.

What is VuildUs?
VuildUs is an app that transforms parts of your own home to a virtual one which you can then see on your Gear VR. With the help of VuildUs and your Gear VR you can completely create your own virtual world and measure and re-decorate it all on-the-fly.

How does it work?
VuildUs is actually very easy to use, you place the space scanner in the middle of an empty room and let the scanner scan the room. You’ll put on your Gear VR and open the app VuildUs and will scroll between all that VuildUs has to offer you.

For example, you can pick up a couch and put it against the wall. Once you have done this you can measure the size by simply securing two points. This gives you a line that says how long it is between the two points. Go on so that the entire space is filled as per your own wishes. Buy the products with Samsung Pay and enjoy your newly decorated space.

Did VuildUs impress us?
Yes, it did impress us, it was something we did with a smile on our faces. Nothing is more fun than decorating your home to your own taste. Choosing products or measuring from wall to wall; everything went very well. Also, the option to buy the products was very convenient. The team VuildUs told us their space scanner in Korea has been working well, but from the concept point of view, it wasn’t finished enough to take it with them to MWC.

When can we expect the project?
VuildUs is still in development. Therefore, it is the question of whether Samsung will release VuildUs to the market. We can not wait, this was definitely one of the best projects alongside Relumino that Samsung’s C-Lab demonstrated at MWC 2017.

Hands-on Samsung’s C-Lab project: Monitorless

Samsung’s C-Lab division is showcasing four new virtual reality projects at the Mobile World Congress 2017 here in Barcelona. We went to check out the new projects that are called Relumino, TraVRer, Monitorless and VuildUs.

In this post we’ll be talking about Monitorless in detail.

What is Monitorless?
As the name suggests, Monitorless lets you use a smartphone and PC through a virtual screen remotely without physical monitors. The Monitorless glasses can be used to view content from devices like smartphones and PCs, but also for augmented reality and virtual reality functions.

How does it work?
Monitorless uses a special pair of glasses instead which resemble regular sunglasses. These glasses contain a lot of hardware, like a CPU, WiFi chip, projector, battery, speaker and of course two optical lenses. This makes the glasses pretty much able to function standalone, except for the content itself.

The content that is viewed via devices like smartphones (and probably also tablets) is streamed remotely via WiFi Direct. The content that is viewed via devices like (Windows) PCs is streamed remotely via the smartphone’s 4G/LTE Internet connection, to the glasses again via WiFi Direct. For the Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) functions, Monitorless explained that it would be possible to use the smartphone as a controller, for example, the smartphone screen in horizontal (landscape) mode could be used as a gamepad.

Did Monitorless impress us?
We were reasonably impressed with the Monitorless project. Unfortunately, the demo from Monitorless did not contain the gamepad functionality, which might be one of the most impressive features, even though it might be pretty difficult to get used to using a touchscreen as a controller when unable to get feedback from the buttons.

The smartphone remote streaming worked very well. The PC remote streaming felt a bit more slow, which could very well be caused by the crowded venue’s internet connection, but also leveraging the phone’s 4G/LTE Internet connection and streaming that back to the glasses did not feel very efficient (it is very flexible, though, since it doesn’t require a regular WiFi signal).

When can we expect the project?
On the hardware side, Monitorless seemed pretty far with their developments; the special pair of glasses that resembles sunglasses looked pretty smooth and all the hardware inside seemed working very well. On the software side, it was a bit harder to judge; again, mainly because the gamepad functionality was not shown in the demo, and also the remote streaming performance was not that great, but that could very well be due to the demo circumstances.

While it might not be completely sure if or when this product hits the market, there is already a lot of work done, so all that might be left for this product could be a sales pitch?

Hands-on Samsung’s C-Lab project: Relumino

We paid a visit to Samsung’s C-Lab booth to check out the four new virtual reality projects that they’re demonstrating at the Mobile World Congress 2017 in Barcelona. The four projects include: Relumino, TraVRer, Monitorless and VuildUs.

In this post, we’ll be talking about Relumino.

What is Relumino?
Relumino is a company that’s using the Gear VR to assist those who are visually impaired. It’s also using the Gear VR to make it easier for people with vision difficulties to comprehend distinct shapes and colors better.

How does it work?
Relumino is Samsung’s smart visual aid with the accent on image processing, helping near-blind and visually impaired people to see things better and clearer. It combines Samsung’s Gear VR headset with a smartphone app that enables users to view images, read books and watch TV with better clarity, thus enhancing their sight. The mobile application enhances the quality of visuals and text that is shown to the user.

Its Vision Assistive Technology processes images obtained by the camera of smartphone and improves viewing conditions by compensating via edge enhancement, contrast enhancement, text enhancement, blind spot remapping (by displacing images) and distorted image correction (caused by metamorphopsia) using an Amsler grid.

These innovations can help with providing partial vision restoration and can be tweaked with customizable settings. A clinical test that commenced in January 2017, shows significant improvement of visual acuity and faster reading speed by using Relumino.

20170228_142123

Did Relumino impress us?
Yes, during our first impression we were definitely impressed. The team of Relumino gave us two good examples. First we were given glasses that show what the world looks like for the visually impaired. Then we got the VR glasses on top the normal glasses and at that time we were looking at a painting. The painting which was very vaguely visible first now had a lot more detail. You could now see the people behind the painting.

In the second example, we were asked to read something off a sign about a meter away from us, this showed us how well the technique worked. All in all we were very impressed during our test and this project certainly gives more value to the visually impaired people’s lives. Yes, Team Relumino has a good chance in succeeding if you ask us.

When can we expect the project?
“If we make our own project, people who are visually impaired can walk outside using our glasses… We want to help them have a better social relationship with other people,” said Samsung Senior Engineer Junghoon Cho. It only costs up to $99 and provides improvement of vision equivalent to extant visual aids with stiff prices. Development of exclusive glasses is also planned in the near future.

Unfortunately, the team behind Relumino could not tell us when it will be available. We think the idea behind Relumino is miraculous and beautiful for visually impaired people, so on behalf of SamMobile we can not wait for this application to hit the market.

Hands-on Samsung’s C-Lab project: TraVRer

Samsung is showcasing some new C-Lab projects at the Mobile World Congress 2017 in Barcelona. SamMobile paid a visit to check out the new projects at MWC 2017. The four projects it’s demonstrating are called: Relumino, TraVRer, Monitorless and VuildUs.

In this post we’ll be taking an in-depth look at TraVRer.

What is TraVRer?
TraVRer Gear VR is an application that is also suitable for the Gear 360. TraVRer will literally put you on the map.

How does it work?
TraVRer is an application that remembers where you made your Gear 360 video based on GPS location, and it also stores the weather information. Imagine walking through your favorite street in your town or city. You made a video of this with the Gear 360 and with the TraVRer app. Then the GPS records the route you’ve walked and marks this with a red line on the map. The funny thing about this is that you are pretty much creating your own Google Street View.

MWC-2017-C-Lab-PR_Main_4

Did TraVRer impress us?
We were reasonably impressed, making private Gear 360 videos is something we obviously already know. The nice thing about this application is of course that you can now, with the help of Google Maps, see where and of which part you have created your own 360 video.

However, the question remains whether this application is going to be widely used. Google Street View already offers a similar view at this time, but at a much larger scale. What is nice is that when you’re using the Gear VR with TraVRer you can relive your own holiday memories and that you are actually building a private Google Street View using the Gear 360.

When can we expect the project?
The team behind TraVRer is already far with their software, but they could not tell whether it will come to the market. The concept is good enough and it looks really cool.

Trademark appears to confirm that the Galaxy S8 will feature an ‘Infinity Display’

According to a recent USPTO trademark application, Samsung has settled on the much-rumored ‘Infinity Display’ moniker to describe the nearly full-screen curved Super AMOLED panels that’ll ship on board the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus.

As you can imagine, the South Korean firm kept its cards close to its chest in the filing documentation, only specifying the bare minimum – the Infinity Display technology will primarily be used on “mobile telephones.”

Aside from a gorgeous edge-to-edge screen, the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus are also believed to be the first handsets to ship with Bixby, which will reportedly have its own physical button located on the left side of the units.

[Sponsored] Two ways to record games on Samsung/Android devices

The thing is that I am not a huge game player, but I play enough, read enough, and talk enough to know that other game players do this. I wanted to do it too. How on earth could I do a screen capture, of a sequence of a game? I had got bored of trying to explain to a friend how to crack a particular section of Angry Birds. Yes, I know, some people do still play it! He just did not seem to understand my instructions, even though, at least in my mind, they were wonderfully clear. In exasperation, knowing that others did it, therefore convinced that I should be able to do it, I said I would send him a screen capture. Yes, I said it slightly incorrectly. I should have said that I would record the android gameplay and send him a video capture.

Everybody on this planet, at least everyone who uses the internet should get on their knees in the direction of Google HQ. We cannot get into the positives and negatives here, but what Google has done to move us forward in the connected world is beyond comparison.

Their Google Play Games is not a great innovation, it is following the curve rather than leading it, but they are to be applauded for developing and publishing the app. It works well. No point in messing about, there are tons of reviews, and ‘how to’ videos out there, and there is barely a negative word to say about the software’s basic functionality. That is the thing, it is basic.

1

It is a silly thing, but I cannot get past the silly name. Google Play Games? Doesn’t it strike anybody else? It does not actually make sense! Are they boasting, that they sit around at HQ, on their designer couches, and play games all day? As they have done in other instances, drop the ‘Google’ and give it a name which means something! Play Games Centre, Play Store Gaming Centre … anything like that. In fact it appears on your phone’s screen as ‘Play’. Sorry, but it bugs me. Neither do I understand why they use a symbol which looks like a PlayStation controller. I’m being picky. I’ll try to shut up.

My best suggestion is Play Dashboard. As we have got used to in many different scenarios, (I do not want to scare anyone, but I think that it was originally in Microsoft’s Access database program!), a ‘dashboard’ is a place from which you launch various actions. A starting point. If you open the Google Play Games app, it will present a screen for you to scroll up and down your games, choose the one which you want to play and there will be the well enough known round symbol, the one which you touch to record, which you have seen often enough before.

2

It is that easy really. Once you have played the game, recorded what you want, then you can do some basic editing and share the game with the usual suspects, YouTube et al. But, in all my thrashing around, trying to work this out, one name kept coming up. I had heard of Wondershare, and I am fairly sure that, many years ago, I actually used one of their dr.fone applications to rescue an iPhone from a near death situation. It seems they now have quite a lot of new tools. This one caught my eye.

3

For a start, they seem to be nice people over there. I had to wonder how many other software publishers give positive reviews to their competition. I will invest in software, but I have to be very convinced. I actually bought this software, paid out just $25 for a lifetime subscription. Why on earth would I do that, when I already have a free tool from Google, to do the job already? Here’s why.

I like quality. Who doesn’t? Does a photograph ever look at its best on the screen of your phone? Doesn’t any photograph always look better on the screen of your laptop or desktop? The same can be said of video too.

If you want to record a sequence of a game, probably quite a long-extended piece which is complicated to complete, which in all honesty, you only manage to do about one time in five, do you really want to do that with a USB cable stuck into your phone. Try it! It is not fun. It makes playing the game unbelievably more difficult.

So! Here is the clever thing which Android screen recorder of dr.fone toolkit does. It sends the recording of your game direct to your PC… wirelessly! Just pause for a moment. Think about the possibilities. I certainly did, and realised that it that it has lots of benefits. I admit that I was thinking beyond the simple recording of games and other things which I might do in the future. However, though I like to think of myself as quite computer savvy, I am still largely a ‘consumer’ rather than a ‘producer’ on my phone. I much prefer the quality of seeing a video on my PC screen. Even more so, I prefer editing items on my PC. That simple. I can lay on the sofa in my office, playing a game, and it is immediately broadcast by Wi-Fi to my working machine. I like that. It is quality.

4

Oh! Oh! Did you see another possibility? Returning to the previous topic, do you want to show your photos to someone? As we have agreed, it is not very satisfactory when you look at them on even a 6” screen, but with the Android screen recorder tool, you can send them straight to your biggest screen. It is easy. Want to show a presentation, a slide show, a PDF document, any document … it is very easy with dr.fone. And, in case you forget, it provides a good way of making video captures of your amazing game play.

5

Conclusion? There is a great deal of choice out there. Google’s app does a good enough job, with the condition that you do need a fairly recent phone. The dr.fone Android Screen Recorder offers various ways for you to use it, a good but simple interface, easy video capture, and much, much more. I like it. I bought it.

Samsung heir’s trial starts March 9

Samsung Electronics vice chairman and heir to the conglomerate Lee Jae-yong has been behind bars for a couple of weeks now after he was arrested on multiple charges including bribery. Since he has been indicted a trial will now follow. The Seoul Central District Court has confirmed that it’s going to start the embezzlement and bribery trial on Thursday, March 9.

“We are preparing hard, thinking that the upcoming Samsung trial … could be the trial of the century that the entire world will be watching,” said special prosecutor Park Young-soo. Charges against Lee include giving bribes to companies and organizations run by President Park Geun-hye’s friend Choi Soon-sil in order to win the government’s backing for a merger between two Samsung affiliates.

It’s too soon to predict which way the trial is going to go but at least we know that it won’t be a long one. The legislation used to appoint the special prosecutor mandates that the trial should be finished in three months.

Galaxy J7 (2017) receives Wi-Fi certification running Nougat

Earlier today, a variant of the long-rumored Galaxy J7 (2017) bearing the model number SM-J730 was spotted on the Wi-Fi Alliance’s online database. Much to our dismay, the documentation doesn’t reveal anything about the device, other than that it was tested running a build of Android 7.0 Nougat.

Recent leaks point towards the Galaxy J7 (2017) packing a 5.5-inch Full HD display, a 2.2Ghz octa-core processor, 2GB of RAM, a 13MP rear-facing camera and a 3,000mAh battery. Now that the handset has passed all of the tests required to launch on market, it shouldn’t be too much longer until it hits the shelves.
