Four new Samsung devices get Google’s ARCore certification

Samsung has launched dozens of new smartphones and tablets over the past few months, and not all of them came with Google’s ARCore support out of the box. Now, the company is making sure that isn’t the case and expanding ARCore support to some of its newly-launched Galaxy devices.

Four new Galaxy smartphones and tablets—Galaxy A22 5G, Galaxy A72, Galaxy Quantum 2, and Galaxy Tab S7 FE—have now received Google’s ARCore support. This makes sure that AR (Augmented Reality) apps and games work consistently on all devices. This certification is offered after testing a device’s camera, CPU, and motion sensors and ensuring that they are working well and appropriately calibrated so that the AR experience isn’t janky.

Unfortunately, the Galaxy A22 5G doesn’t support ARCore’s optional Depth API, which allows devices to create depth maps using RGB cameras.

Thanks to the ARCore certification, developers can rest assured that their AR apps and games will work as expected on the newly-certified Samsung devices. While there are a bunch of AR apps and games available for Android devices via the Play Store, it is still nowhere close to Apple’s ecosystem, which has better and higher-quality apps.

Samsung quietly introduces Galaxy Chromebook Go with 14-inch display, Intel Celeron CPU

Samsung has unveiled the Galaxy Chromebook Go, an ultra-affordable Chrome OS-based laptop. It completes the South Korean firm’s Chromebook lineup, which also includes the Galaxy Chromebook and the Galaxy Chromebook 2. This new laptop features an Intel Celeron processor, LTE connectivity, and a lightweight design.

The Galaxy Chromebook Go features a 14-inch IPS LCD display. Unfortunately, the screen resolution is limited to just 1,366 x 768 pixels, and we don’t think any modern laptop in 2021 should have such a low-resolution display. Naturally, the device runs Chrome OS. It comes equipped with Intel’s Celeron N4500 processor that is built using a 10nm process and features two CPU cores and Intel UHD Graphics with 16 EUs. There is 4GB/8GB LPDDR4X RAM, 32GB/64GB/128GB eMMC storage, and a microSD card slot.

Samsung has equipped its latest Chromebook with a tenkeyless keyboard, a decently large multitouch trackpad, 1.5W stereo speakers, and a 720p webcam. Connectivity features of the Galaxy Chromebook Go are surprisingly modern: LTE (nano-SIM), Wi-Fi 6 (2×2), one USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A port, two USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C ports, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The device is 15.9mm thin and weighs 1.45kg. It is powered by a 42.3Whr battery and comes bundled with a 45W USB Type-C charger.

The company hasn’t announced the pricing or availability of the Galaxy Chromebook Go yet, but we won’t be surprised if it starts at $299. The device comes in just one color: silver. It may be launched in Asia, Europe, and North America over the next few days.

8 new Android apps found to contain malware that steals data and money

A total of eight Android apps from the Google Play Store were recently found to contain the Joker malware. The apps, spotted by Quick Heal Security Labs, could collect and steal data from Android smartphone users and create all sorts of other problems.

Fortunately, the research firm brought the issue to Google’s attention, and the eight infected apps have reportedly been removed from the Play Store. They’re no longer available for download, which means that the digital storefront is safer, but the apps themselves still pose a threat as they remain in the wild.

The Joker malware can steal a user’s data and can even sneakily sign up users to expensive paid subscriptions to which they never agreed. The malware can burn a hole in one’s pocket and can even steal contact lists, device information, messages, and more.

It’s highly advised that any Android smartphone users — including Galaxy smartphone customers — who have downloaded these apps remove them as soon as possible and perform a virus scan using a reputable antimalware tool. The infected apps are:

  • Auxiliary Message
  • Fast Magic SMS
  • Free CamScanner
  • Super Message
  • Element Scanner
  • Go Messages
  • Travel Wallpapers
  • Super SMS

As a rule of thumb, Android smartphone owners should stay away from unknown apps that lack any sort of reputation, especially if they are messaging, scanner, or wallpaper apps, since these categories are very popular among hackers and are often used as a vehicle for malware.

You can now ‘try on’ the Galaxy Watch 3 anywhere and anytime using AR

Smartwatch enthusiasts can now try on the Galaxy Watch 3 anywhere, at any time, as long as they have a smartphone equipped with a camera and the Snapchat app installed. Samsung and Snapchat have partnered to create an augmented reality (AR) version of the Galaxy Watch 3 for Snapchat Lens. It gives app users the option to check how the wearable fits their wrist without visiting a physical Samsung store or making a blind purchase.

The Snapchat Lens can be accessed by opening the Snapchat camera and selecting Samsung. Users are given the option of picking a Galaxy Watch 3 model and color, change the strap and watchface, and experience parts of the Tizen OS user interface in an augmented reality environment. Snapchat users who might like the Galaxy Watch 3 after experiencing the AR version of the wearable have a “shop” button they can tap for quick access to a Samsung online store.

The Galaxy Watch 3 is expected to be succeeded by the Galaxy Watch 4 soon, which means that prospective buyers are likely to find the Watch 3 at discounted prices. The Watch 4 should be announced along with the Galaxy Watch Active 4 at the next Unpacked event in August, though this has yet to be confirmed officially.

Snapchat and Samsung will hopefully allow app users to test the upcoming model in augmented reality, but we’ll have to wait and see. You can check the video below (via The Drum) if you want to see the Samsung Snapchat Lens in action before deciding whether or not it’s worth trying this new AR feature yourself.

Samsung is officially a sponsor of David Beckham’s esports team

A recent study has shown that revenues from global esports could reach $1.1 billion by the end of the year after a 14.5% YoY increase. Esports is now a more lucrative business than ever, and although Samsung is not involved directly with managing an esports team, the company’s brand is becoming more visible across esports thanks to strategic partnerships.

Samsung is now an official sponsor of David Beckham’s Guild Esports organization. Yes, David Beckham — the former England football captain — is the co-owner of the London-based Guild Esports organization, the latter of which was listed on the London Stock Exchange in October.

Samsung didn’t disclose any monetary figures pertaining to its newfound role as a sponsor of Guild Esports, but according to CityAM, 50% of the value of the deal will be paid in cash, while 50% comes in the form of equipment such as Samsung monitors.

“This partnership shows our continued commitment to gamers and the wider industry and will offer fans experiences beyond the norm,” said Damon Crowhurst of Samsung Electronics UK.

Did you know? Samsung managed its own esports team for four years

South Korea is considered the cradle of esports. It’s where the phenomenon began, so it’s no wonder that Samsung was involved with managing its own esports team for a few years. The company’s esports team, called Samsung Galaxy, was founded in 2013 after MVP Blue and MVP White were acquired by Samsung.

Samsung Galaxy teams competed in esports titles including League of Legends, StarCraft, and StarCraft II. The esports organization was disbanded in 2017 after winning the 2017 League of Legends World Championship.

Samsung hasn’t managed its own esports team since, but the company has remained involved in the esports scene at large. This year alone, aside from partnering with David Beckham’s Guild Esports organization, Samsung also became a CLG memory partner and revealed a new esports event back in April. It has also teamed up with H20 Esports Campus to create a learning program for aspiring game designers.

Why the Galaxy Z Fold 2 wow factor hasn’t worn off even after nine months

I have been a big believer of Samsung’s foldable smartphones ever since the original Galaxy Fold was released. I felt that someone had finally broken the monotony that the smartphone market was suffering from. The Galaxy Fold brought us a glimpse of the future, it showed us that there’s still space for limitless innovation in this saturated industry.

Less than a year later, Samsung knocked it out of the park with the Galaxy Z Flip. The first clamshell foldable smartphone had an Ultra-Thin Glass display and it was more durable. It set the stage for what was to come later in the year. A few months later, Samsung unveiled the incredible Galaxy Z Fold 2.

It didn’t feel like the Galaxy Fold’s successor as much as it felt like an entirely new device. The boxier design with clean and sharp lines coupled with the exceptional build quality was a sight to behold. Significant improvements under the hood made the device a very compelling option.

Normally, the wow factor tends to wear off a few months after using a new device. Attributes that excited us initially may not warrant even a second thought later on. We may buy phones for the bundle of new features that they promise but end up not using most of them, either because they’re simply too niche or because the novelty wears off.

What’s incredible about the Galaxy Z Fold 2 is that despite being an unconventional device, nothing about it feels like a novelty. This is a testament Samsung’s vision behind the device. Everything from the cover display to the internal foldable display and the many unique software features feel like an integral part of the user experience. There’s nothing that exists in isolation or exists just for the sake of expanding the Galaxy Z Fold 2’s list of features.

I have been using the Galaxy Z Fold 2 for almost nine months now as my daily driver. Ever since I used Samsung’s first foldable smartphone, it’s impossible for me to even imagine going back to a regular phone. The Galaxy Z Fold 2 has me spoiled even more.

There are a few reasons why I’m still captivated by the wow factor of this device. First and foremost, I can’t help but be impressed by the engineering prowess that went into the Galaxy Z Fold 2, by how everything just works flawlessly. I fold and unfold the device hundreds of times in a single day. Not once have I felt the need to consciously be careful with it lest I damage the hinge. There’s no need to gingerly fold and unfold the device. Even after times I have slammed the phone shut out of frustration, everything has always worked as it should.

After nine months of rigorous daily use, the hinge feels as solid as it was on the very first fold. This just inspires confidence that Samsung’s foldable devices are built to last. It’s true that the 7.6-inch foldable display is a fingerprint magnet but it’s nothing that a quick swipe with a microfiber cloth can’t fix.

Since I’m on the road frequently but always need to be wired into what’s happening across my businesses, the wow factor of having a tablet-sized display in my pocket is never going to wear off. Multi-Active Window is a lifesaver. I can quickly browse through email, feeds, team communications and more at the same time. I don’t have to switch between different apps. This useful feature makes it much easier to get up to speed when I’ve been offline for a couple of hours.

With team meetings happening remotely for the better part of a year due to the pandemic, Flex Mode has been a game changer. I love the convenience with which it allows me to make video calls completely hands-free while I’m on my desk. This feature is far from a novelty. Apps like Camera and YouTube are also able to take full advantage of Flex Mode.

The battery has also held up very well throughout the time I’ve been using this device. It’s more than capable of getting me through the day even with 5G enabled. If anything, this just reiterates my belief that the Galaxy Z Fold 2 delivers a truly rewarding user experience.

What’s great about technology is that the wheel of innovation never stops. The Galaxy Z Fold 2 may be a great device but the story of foldables doesn’t end here. Samsung is expected to launch new foldable smartphones in the near future. The Galaxy Z Fold 2’s successor will undoubtedly be even better. We can expect improvements in a lot of different areas.

These are exciting times indeed. Samsung is blazing a new trail with its foldable smartphones, one that no other manufacturer seems to have an answer to right now.

Work on Galaxy S21 Android 12 update off to an early start

Google unveiled the list of smartphone OEMs set to release Android 12 beta builds at Google I/O last month, and as many of you are aware, Samsung was missing from that list. This meant that Galaxy smartphone owners wouldn’t have access to the Android 12 beta program, and indeed, they don’t.

That was disappointing news for Galaxy smartphone owners who may have wanted to participate in the development of Android 12, and it left people wondering when Samsung will be able to release the first Android 12 build for its Galaxy flagships. Only time will tell, but the good news is that development is underway.

Samsung is working on Android 12 for the Galaxy S21 series

Although no Galaxy smartphone users can join the Android 12 beta program yet, Samsung is reportedly making progress. And according to @MaxWinebach on Twitter, Samsung has just started developing Android 12 for the Galaxy S21 series.

Contrary to what a fabricated leak wanted you to believe, Samsung is testing Android 12 on its latest flagship phone as opposed to the Galaxy A50, which makes sense given the age of these devices, their position on the market, and Samsung’s usual M.O. when it comes to firmware development.

There’s no information regarding release timeframes. However, it’s worth noting that Samsung was seemingly quicker to start developing Android 12 for the Galaxy S21 series than last year. The first clues of Samsung developing Android 11 for the Galaxy S20 lineup emerged in late July 2020, and the first public build got released in mid-December.

Samsung has now started developing Android 12 for the Galaxy S21 a month earlier, in June, though this doesn’t guarantee that the first public release will happen in November. However, public beta builds might be coming soon to Galaxy S21 owners who want to help speed up the development process by providing feedback.

Samsung MWC 2021 live event will unveil the future of smartwatches

Samsung has been showcasing new products at the annual Mobile World Congress in Barcelona for years. Nobody got a chance to do that in 2020 as MWC was cancelled due to the pandemic. The organizers have brought back the event this year, though.

Samsung hasn’t held an in-person launch event since the Galaxy S20 event in February 2020. The company also confirmed pretty early on that it won’t have an in-person presence at MWC 2021. However, there’s going to be a Samsung MWC 2021 live virtual event.

More details about Samsung’s new smartwatch platform expected

Some of you might be confused about why MWC is taking place at this time of the year. It has traditionally been held in the last week of February. The organizers had delayed it to the last week of June to allow for the COVID situation to settle down a bit.

Even though MWC 2021 is an in-person event, Samsung had confirmed that it won’t have a presence on the ground. The company opted for a virtual event instead. Samsung has provided some details today about what we can expect to see during the live stream.

The company will showcase how the Galaxy ecosystem of connected devices enriches peoples’ lives. So there will likely be some Internet of Things related announcements. Samsung is also going to unveil “its vision for the future of smartwatches.”

It was already confirmed during Google I/O earlier this month that Samsung’s next smartwatches will run the new unified Wear platform that has been built with Google. The upcoming smartwatches won’t run on Samsung’s Tizen platform.

Perhaps we might get to find out more about this platform, the opportunities that it provides for developers and the new experiences it will power for users. It’s highly unlikely that the Galaxy Watch 4 will be unveiled at this stage. It’s expected to be unveiled alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 in August.

You can catch Samsung’s MWC 2021 live event on the company’s official YouTube channel at 7:15 pm CET on June 28.

Unlocked Galaxy A51 is finally getting Android 11 / One UI 3.1 in the USA

It’s been a long time coming, but the unlocked Galaxy A51 is finally getting the Android 11-based One UI 3.1 firmware update in the USA. As many of you know, Samsung first updated the international model with Android 11 and One UI 3.0 back in February. The Galaxy A51 continued to receive regular security patches since, and it even made the jump to One UI 3.1 without any signs of Android 11 reaching customers in the USA. Now, the wait is finally over.

Samsung customers who own the unlocked Galaxy A51 (SM-A515U1) in the USA should be greeted with a firmware update notification at any moment. As always, owners can also attempt to trigger the update process from the phone’s Settings menu under Software update, or they can visit our firmware archive where we post new Samsung firmware files regularly. The latest update for the unlocked Galaxy A51 (SM-A515U1) can be identified by firmware version A515U1UEU5CUF1, and unsurprisingly, it includes the June 2021 security patch.

As for the update itself, Android 11 / One UI 3.1 introduces a refreshed user interface along with various improvements to Samsung apps and features. Blue light filter got replaced an improved Eye Comfort Shield, and removing location data from photos before sharing them online is now easier than ever thanks to a new addition to the Gallery app. Other features include an improved Dark Mode, improved Parental Controls and Digital Wellbeing, additional lock screen customization options and more. Remember that the unlocked Galaxy A51 in the USA is being updated from Android 10 / One UI 2, so it’s a pretty big leap to One UI3.1 and not just a routine firmware release.

No, Samsung didn’t help Google install communist spyware on your Galaxy device

Getting a free vaccine effectively ensuring your survival in face of a deadly plague, not reading the thing you signed before you got your shot, then going on the Internet to decry the experience as an attack on your personal liberties by foreign entities – is there a more American way to spend a Saturday morning?

Not this summer, there isn’t. Because this story has it all, including communists and Samsung, whose name is among those peddled by the mildly annoyed masses speculating about Google’s potential co-conspirators who orchestrated the greatest attack on their privacy since that time they’ve last unlocked their phone.

No, Samsung hasn’t helped Google install communist spyware on your daughter’s Galaxy device

Lo and behold the offending tool: the Exposure Notifications Settings Feature. Featurette, more like. Made by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. And automatically installed on your smartphone, Galaxy or otherwise, if you have opted to leave your phone number with whatever state facility you got your shot at.

“Yesterday app showed up in app list on store, today it installed itself without my consent! If bakers not bad enough!!! Keep your Communist spyware out of people’s lives,” wrote one R.V. in his Google Play Store review, using what’s presumably his real name.

“I have no idea how they pulled this off, but it had to involve either Google, or Samsung, or both,” concludes L.N, another privacy-conscious individual review-bombing the said app.

This goes on for about 700 more entries, as of Monday morning, PST. According to public caching data, mostly from Google itself, a few hundred reviews have already been deleted. This isn’t to say there’s evidence of an actual conspiracy here; those were most likely removed by their very authors after they’ve discovered what has actually transpired.

So, no, Samsung hasn’t helped Google install communist spyware on your daughter’s Galaxy device. But if you’re so worried about the likelihood of such a thing transpiring, might I interest you in finding out about Android’s lord and savior that is Samsung’s software update policy?

Samsung sending out the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 to partners

There’s a lot that needs to be done before the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the Galaxy Z Flip 3 can be released to the public. Samsung is slowly but surely working through it all to bring us its latest and greatest foldable smartphones.

Mobile carriers are important partners for Samsung, particularly in its home country of South Korea. That’s because the vast majority of people purchase phones through carriers there. So Samsung is now sending out the new foldables to its carrier partners.

Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 launch due in August

According to local media reports, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 have been shipped to the country’s largest mobile carriers – SK Telecom, KT and LG U+. These carriers are now running tests on the devices to ensure that they are fully compatible with their networks.

While Samsung has offered exclusive color options to carriers in the past, reports suggest that it won’t be doing that for the new foldables. No South Korean carrier is going to get an exclusive color option for the upcoming devices.

We have confirmed exclusively that both the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 will receive a price cut up to 20%. Industry officials in South Korea expect the Galaxy Z Fold 3 to be priced at 1.9 million won or approximately $1,670. The Galaxy Z Fold 2 cost 2.398 million won or roughly $2,100 in Samsung’s home country.

The lower price is going to bring the new handsets within reach of more customers. That’s probably why Samsung is pushing ahead with record-breaking production of the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3. It expects to sell a combined 7 million units of these devices. The new foldables are expected to be unveiled in August.

New Samsung OLED TVs on the cards as LG deal set to finalize

Samsung and LG are two of South Korea’s top companies. These diversified conglomerates compete in a variety of industries at home and overseas. In some areas, Samsung is in the clear lead, leaving LG so far behind that it’s no longer in the rear view mirror.

However, certain circumstances appear to have brought the two companies together. Rather unsurprisingly, there’s a Chinese element behind it. That’s why it’s now expected that a long-awaited partnership between Samsung and LG may be announced as early as this week.

Samsung LG deal will be worth a few billion dollars

Samsung might be the world’s top supplier of mobile OLED panels but LG Display dominates the large OLED panel segment. Samsung’s dislike for OLED TVs is well known so the company didn’t bother manufacturing OLED panels for TVs.

It perfected its own QLED panel technology for high-end TVs while using LCD panels for the more affordable second-tier TVs. This strategy has worked well for Samsung over the years since there was enough of a price difference between LCD and OLED panels. Then came the Chinese. They improved the quality and yields of their LCD panels and made their products competitive.

The price for LCD panels has risen as demand increases to the point that the gap between LCD and OLED panel prices has drastically reduced. So Samsung can now switch to OLED, which provides benefits over LCD, without taking a big hit on its margins.

The only problem is that Samsung doesn’t make large OLEDs. So it has to walk across town to LG Display. The company already supplies OLED panels to major TV manufacturers like LG Electronics, Sony and Vizio. It has lowered defect rates, increased production yields and is even expanding capacity.

There have been a few reports over the past few months indicating that a historic partnership worth a few billion dollars between Samsung and LG Display is on the cards. Samsung will reportedly use LG’s OLED panels in its second-tier TVs. It’s flagship models will continue to use QLED. This will be enough to hold Samsung over until Samsung Display is able to sort out the yield constraints for its next-gen QD-OLED panels.

Korean media is now reporting that the head of Samsung Electronics’ video display business division Han Jong-hee will confirm the partnership with LG Display as early as this week. Samsung is expected to sign a contract to source between 2 to 3 million OLED panels from LG Display per year until 2024.

Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 already breaking Samsung’s records

There’s a lot of excitement for the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3. These are undoubtedly Samsung’s highly anticipated devices of 2021. Given the success that it has witnessed with their predecessors, Samsung is hopeful that the new devices are going to sell very well.

According to recent reports, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 are now in mass production. The daily production figures of these devices have set a new record for Samsung’s foldables. It’s a clear indication that Samsung is bullish on the sales prospects of its new foldable smartphones.

Samsung expects the new foldables to do very well

A report claims that Samsung is producing between 50,000 – 70,000 units of the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the Galaxy Z Flip 3 every single day. This figure is much higher than any of Samsung’s previous foldables.

Samsung has reportedly set an ambitious combined sales target of 7 million units for the new devices. It expects to sell 3 million units of the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and 4 million units of the Galaxy Z Flip 3. That’s quite an increase over their predecessors.

There are a number of factors that may contribute to more sales for the 2021 foldables. These are no longer first-generation devices. Samsung’s foldable technology is maturing. These devices are becoming more durable. They’ll also be packed to the gills with new technology.

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 will be the first Samsung foldable to feature the S Pen. Since there won’t be a new Galaxy Note this year, it may pick up sales from Note loyalists as well. We’ve also exclusively revealed that both the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 will get a price cut of up to 20%.

Better devices at lower prices sounds like a winning formula. Samsung appears to be confident in the new foldables’ ability to win your heart and your dollars. Whether that actually happens remains to be seen. Samsung is expected to unveil the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 in August.

Samsung just got done with ditching China for India

Samsung has set up a massive factory in Noida, UP, India to manufacture components for its products. The company has also made a significant investment in setting up a display panel manufacturing plant at the factory.

The company had confirmed in December last year that it would shift its display manufacturing unit from China to India. Merely six months after the announcement was made, Samsung is now done ditching China for India.

Samsung has invested almost $650 million in Noida

In a bid to attract Samsung’s mobile and IT display production unit to Noida, the government gave special incentives to the tune of $61 million. This massive investment was to create 500 direct and over 1,300 indirect jobs.

Samsung has now completed the construction of the display manufacturing unit that was shifted from China to Noida. A delegation from the company called on the state’s chief minister over the weekend.

It said that due to the better industrial environment and investor-friendly policies, Samsung decided to relocate its display manufacturing unit from China to Noida. The work of setting up the unit has now been completed.

The South Korean giant has spent almost $650 million to shift the manufacturing unit to India. It underscores the company’s commitment to manufacturing devices and components in India. With the heavy construction work now completed, it’s quite possible that this new manufacturing unit may be able to start commercial display production in the coming months.

Samsung Display workers go on strike for the first time in history

Samsung Display is used to making history. For example, it was the first to commercialize UTG (ultra-thin glass) foldable displays. However, advancements in display technology aren’t the only “firsts” that the company now needs to get used to.

For the first time in history, Samsung Display workers have gone on a strike against the company. They went on strike after negotiations with the management failed over a wage hike.

Similar industrial actions could spread to other Samsung affiliates

Samsung had been staunchly opposed to labor unions in the past. Employees were prevented from forming unions at the companies under its corporate umbrella. However, the attitude towards unions has now changed. Samsung boss Lee Jae-yong had promised to get rid of the conglomerate’s “no labor union” policy.

Today, representatives of the labor union at Samsung Display launched their first strike in the company’s history. They did that after negotiations over a wage increase fell through. Around 40 representatives of the union staged the strike at the Samsung Display plant in Asan, South Chungcheong Province.

The union has close to 2,400 members or approximately 10 percent of the entire Samsung Display workforce. It’s yet to decide whether a full-scale strike will be launched. That option is not off the table as more than 90 percent of union members had voted for industrial actions last month.

If that happens, Samsung Display’s production would suffer, and that’s something it wouldn’t like. The union is demanding a 6.8 percent increase in base pay but the company has countered with a 4.5 percent raise instead. Both sides are not budging on their stance for now.

Once Samsung announced it would ditch its no labor union policy in May last year, the company would have known it may face such challenges in the future. Lee Jae-yong had promised that the conglomerate will strictly comply with labor laws and guarantee three fundamental labor rights of workers.

The labor union at Samsung Display was subsequently formed under the Federation of Korean Trade Unions last year. Industry observers are of the view that such industrial actions could expand to other Samsung affiliates in the future.

Samsung’s Summer of Galaxy starts today with $50+ worth of goodies

Samsung is giving away over $50 worth of goodies to all of its existing customers as of today. The occasion is what the company refers to as the “Summer of Galaxy” – a promotional event meant to reward its existing customers for… well, existing.

Despite its name, this “summer” is only set to last for a month, as far as vouchers are concerned. Which is all anyone cares about, to be honest. As per Samsung’s official announcement of the event, there’s something for everyone here in terms of goodies. Everyone stateside, that is, as this is a U.S.-exclusive offer.

A 50% discount on the Galaxy Watch 3 is also on offer – with a catch

Perhaps the least surprising offer is also the most valuable of the bunch in terms of savings – it’s the three-month subscription to YouTube Premium. You know the one, Samsung’s been offering it in a perpetual manner for years. “Perpetually” meaning every other week, more or less.

But it’s not Samsung’s fault no one wants to pay for YouTube. Have you seen it lately? Still, given how a third of the planet is running Galaxy devices these days, Google’s sales strategy appears to be on point: just sell the subscriptions nobody wants in a bulk to Samsung for pennies on the supposed dollars, then claim your premium service is growing every quarter while the investors fall over themselves.

Oh well, at least the rest of the Summer of Galaxy offerings are somewhat decent: there’s a $5 Uber Eats voucher, three months’ worth of a Billboard Pro membership, and a comparable Twitch offering. Additionally, the most hardcore fans who manage to find a friend to buy a Galaxy S21-series device will net themselves and their plus-one a 50% discount on the Galaxy Watch 3.

Check out all the details at the Summer of Galaxy landing page.

Galaxy J7 (2017) gets a new software update with June 2021 security patch

Samsung has released a new software update to the four-year-old Galaxy J7 (2017). The company’s turnaround in terms of software updates has been pretty impressive, and not many other Android OEMs can say that they keep their four-year-old smartphones updated with the latest security patch.

The Galaxy J7 (2017) has started receiving a new software update in Mexico. It comes with firmware version J730GMUBSCCUF3 and includes the June 2021 security patch. The company had detailed its latest software update a few days ago, revealing that it contains four dozen fixes from Google and 19 fixes from Samsung. The update is still based on Android 9, and it doesn’t bring any new feature to the Galaxy J7 (2017).

If you are a Galaxy J7 (2017) user in Mexico, you can either wait for the OTA update to hit your device or check for the update manually by navigating to Settings » Software update and tapping on Download and install. Alternatively, you can also download the new firmware file for the Galaxy J7 (2017) from our firmware database and flash it manually. Other markets could get the software update over the next few days.

Samsung had launched the Galaxy J7 (2017) in July 2017 with Android 7.0 Nougat. The phone received two major Android OS updates: Android 8.0 and Android 9-based One UI. The previous security update rolled out to the device was the March 2021 patch. The company might soon stop releasing new software updates to the smartphone.
