Galaxy S11 camera layout brings the end of a signature Samsung design

The very first CAD renders of the Galaxy S11 were leaked online today. They have given us a good idea of what Samsung’s flagship smartphone might look like. One of the biggest design changes has been made at the back. It appears that the Galaxy S11 will feature a new L-shaped camera setup at the back.

What many of you might have noticed is that the camera is no longer positioned in the center. The new camera setup is right-aligned and positioned vertically. With it, we and many of Samsung’s fans feel, the company has done away with one of its signature design elements.

The cameras always used to be at the back of a Samsung flagship, the very first Galaxy S handset being an exception. In all of those years, Samsung didn’t shift the position even though every other manufacturer would go on to toy with the idea and later adopt it. That didn’t deter Samsung and any changes in the appearance or size of the camera module notwithstanding, the center-alignment remained the same.

There was a time when one could say that Apple drove hardware and design trends in the smartphone market. There’s not much truth to that anymore. Chinese manufacturers have a lot of influence in the market and the sheer numbers that they’re shipping are pushing others to either adapt or get left behind. On the other hand, Samsung has been on a roll for the past few years. it has pushed the boundaries with innovative display technologies and has been able to shun the negative perception of being an Apple copycat. It’s even leading the way on foldable smartphones.

You may never have given it a thought that this design element would eventually come to be subconsciously associated with a Samsung flagship. In a sea of Chinese handsets that looked or less the same when viewed from behind, you could simply look at the camera alignment and tell the Samsung apart. The eagle-eyed among us could even pick out the exact model.

Samsung did make this change for some of its more affordable devices and many did feel that it was merely getting with the times. The Chinese were highly competitive in that segment of the market so it had to do whatever it could to beat them at their own game. That drive has even led Samsung to outsource production of over 60 million handsets to third-parties just to beat or even just match the Chinese on price.

It was the Galaxy Note 10 which revealed to us where Samsung would be headed in terms of design going forward. This year’s flagship phablet does have a right-aligned vertically positioned camera at the back. Some fans voiced their displeasure at it but seeing as how well the Galaxy Note 10 has performed in the market, it’s evident that its other strengths convinced them to get over their dislike for the camera placement.

Much of the negative feedback on these renders has been about the camera layout and placement. Many of our readers feel that this is unnecessary and that it would seem as if Samsung’s merely following a trend set by others. It’s possible that there may have been some engineering challenges that forced Samsung to make this decision.

The Galaxy S11’s camera is shaping out to be unlike anything seen before on a Samsung smartphone. However, given that this had already been done with the Galaxy Note 10 which didn’t break new ground in the camera department, it was basically futile to expect Samsung to retain one of the last vestiges of its signature design.

This won’t inherently make the Galaxy S11 “bad.” It all just comes down to personal preference. The vast majority of people who aren’t that invested in the entire journey of a device from concept to production would probably not even notice it. Only the fans will feel a bit bummed out and that’s really not a major inconvenience for Samsung in the larger scheme of things.

Samsung is preparing improved 8K TV upscaling tech for CES 2020 lineup

Samsung Electronics is reportedly making advancements in its AI-based upscaling technology for 8K TVs. The company wants to apply deep learning AI-based upscaling to all of its future 8K TV models planned for release next year. It could also prepare the technology in anticipation of a future microLED TV lineup which may not be part of The Wall series, said to be unveiled at CES 2020.

This bit of news comes from Korean news outlet Pulse citing principal engineers Ahn Tae-gyoung and Park Seung-ho of Samsung Electronics Visual Display Business Division.

Deep learning-based 8K upscaling to become the next best thing

Samsung has been using machine learning-based upscaling tech for a couple of years now, but the company continues to improve its solution and deep-learning AI should push this concept to the next level. As detailed in this paper, deep learning is a subset of machine learning and provides higher accuracy, particularly in image and sound recognition.

Upscaling has become a vital component of modern high-resolution TVs because they’ve advanced much faster than broadcasting technology. Broadcasting in 8K resolutions isn’t really a thing yet, but Samsung leverages AI to upscale 1080p or even lower-quality content to 4K and 8K resolutions on its TVs.

Are you in the market for a new Samsung TV? If so, will you take advantage of the holiday shopping season and hope to buy one at a discount, or will you wait until after CES 2020 to see what this improved upscaling technology is all about? Leave a comment below.

Exclusive: Galaxy A51 to feature a 5MP macro camera

If the leaks and rumors are correct, then the upcoming Galaxy A51 is set to become Samsung’s cheapest smartphone with a quad camera setup at the back. The first quad camera Galaxy phone was last year’s A9 (2018), which had wide-angle, ultra-wide, depth, and telephoto cameras. When leaked renders showed four rear cameras on the Galaxy A51, we assumed it would be a setup similar to the one from the Galaxy A9 (2018). However, that is not the case, according to information we have received from one of our tipsters.

The fourth camera sensor on the Galaxy A51 will be a 5-megapixel macro lens. Macro lenses, like telephoto lenses, let you get close to a subject, but they are different in one important aspect. Macro lenses have a much shorter minimum focusing distance, so they actually let you get closer to a subject than a telephoto lens without losing focus, making them excellent for taking photos of, say, insects or flowers.

However, they also require you to physically move closer to the subject because of the shorter focusing distance, something that’s not required with telephoto lenses. For smartphones, macro lenses are a cheaper alternative to telephoto lenses, which is no doubt why Samsung has chosen to equip the Galaxy A51 with the former. We are assuming the Galaxy A71, which has the same L-shaped quad camera setup at the back as the A51, has a macro lens as well.

The other three rear cameras on the Galaxy A51 will include a 48MP primary camera, 12MP ultra-wide camera, and a 5MP depth-sensing camera. The 12MP ultra-wide camera is an upgrade from the 8MP and 5MP ultra-wide cameras seen on existing mid-range and budget smartphones, and it should bring a noticeable improvement to ultra-wide pictures. For selfies, the Galaxy A51 will have a 32MP camera located in a punch hole in the center of the display.

Surprise, surprise: Renders show Galaxy S11 won’t have a headphone jack

The will it, won’t it stories about the headphone jack for Samsung’s next flagship smartphone won’t be required. We had a lot of them for the Galaxy Note 10. Many of its most diehard supporters thought Samsung would be mad for removing the headphone jack from a flagship smartphone. It had already done that for a few mid-range devices earlier this year.

Ultimately, Samsung decided that it was time for the headphone jack to go on a flagship phone too. So came the Galaxy Note 10 series in all its glory without a standard 3.5mm headphone jack. That effectively closed the chapter on this.

Galaxy S11 wasn’t expected to have a headphone jack in the first place

There was little reason to believe that Samsung would keep the headphone jack on the Galaxy S11 after removing it on the Galaxy Note 10. The direction that it’s taking with the design on its devices leaves little room for one in the first place.

This is why it’s not surprising to see at all that the first CAD renders of the Galaxy S11 don’t show a headphone jack. There wasn’t any reason to suspect that it might have one in the first place. That train left the station with the Galaxy Note 10 and it’s not going to be coming back.

Samsung will ship the device with USB Type-C wired earphones as it does with the Galaxy Note 10. It may also have generous pre-order offers that give a free pair of the Galaxy Buds for free. We’ve seen it do that even with the Galaxy S10 so no reason we won’t get them with the next flagship. There’s another reason to be excited about this. The Galaxy Buds are up for a refresh and they could pick up some cool new features.

No point in mourning the lack of headphone jack on the Galaxy S11. It seems that the polarizing debate this time around might be about that new camera setup. Fun times ahead!

Galaxy S11 renders leaked, come take a look!

The most important Galaxy S11 leak has finally arrived today. Renders of Samsung’s next flagship have been published by Twitter leakster @OnLeaks, giving us an early look at what the device could look like.

The Galaxy S11 is still a few months away from an official launch so things could change down the line, but we can expect the phone’s design to be more or less similar to what has been shown in these renders. Such renders always appear months before the official launch and tend to be a somewhat accurate depiction.

Leaked Galaxy S11 renders show key design changes

Samsung is going to release three different models of its next Galaxy S flagship, just like it did this year. The Galaxy S11e, Galaxy S11 and the Galaxy S11+ will all have a similar design. The cheapest variant will be more like its siblings this time around as Samsung is expected to opt for curved panels across the entire lineup.

The silhouette appears to be quintessentially that of a Galaxy S flagship. However, there are a couple of design changes that jump out. The rear camera setup loses its horizontal positioning in the center to a left-aligned vertical position. That’s a departure from what has been the norm on this series for the past few years. The camera setup also appears to adopt the new L-shape that has previously been discussed for the unannounced Galaxy A51 and Galaxy A71. It appears that there may be a total of five sensors at the back in addition to an LED flash.

The Galaxy S11 seemingly takes a page out of the Galaxy Note 10’s book and places the punch hole for the camera in the center of the display. It does look better than the current setup on the Galaxy S10, that’s something a lot of people agreed on when Samsung opted for a center-aligned hole on the Galaxy Note 10. Many will be glad to see that it’s making the same decision for the Galaxy S11.

The placement of the physical buttons is likely going to change as well. The renders show the power and volume buttons on the right side of the frame. The Galaxy S10 had its volume + Bixby keys on the left and power key on the right. It’s only with the Galaxy Note 10 that Samsung decided to ditch the Bixby button and put all of them on one side (left) of the phone. Samsung’s doing that for the Galaxy S11 as well but on the opposite side. It has released some mid-range phones that have all buttons on the right.

These renders are for the Galaxy S11 and the handset is said to measure 161.9 x 73.7 x 7.8mm. The thickness goes up to 8.9mm when taking the camera bump into account. Earlier reports suggest that it’s going to have a 6.7-inch display. The Galaxy S11e, Galaxy S11 and Galaxy S11+ are said to feature a 6.3-inch, 6.7-inch and 6.9-inch display respectively. There’s a reason to believe that it may have a 120Hz refresh rate panel which would be a first for any Samsung phone.

You’ll find an Exynos 990 chip under the hood or the Snapdragon 865 in select markets. There’s a lot of excitement about the camera as well. The Galaxy S11 could be Samsung’s first phone with a 108-megapixel primary camera. The entire setup may also include a 5x zoom telephoto lens with OIS, an ultra wide-angle lens and a ToF sensor. It’s obviously going to be running Android 10 with One UI 2.0 on board.

Samsung isn’t due to unveil the Galaxy S11 series until next year so we’ll be hearing a lot more about it before then. Keep in mind that things could change in the meantime, even though this source has a good track record with such renders. Which of the main design changes do you like or dislike? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

[Poll Results!] Would you prefer to buy the new Moto Razr over the Galaxy Fold?

You’ve probably heard by now: A new foldable smartphone has joined the race, and it’s none other than the Motorola Razr. Yes, the Razr is back, and frankly, it looks awesome. After all, it’s based on the original Moto Razr, an iconic phone that holds a special place in the hearts of many and is one of the best-selling feature phones of all time. And it’s also rather impressive that a relatively small manufacturer like Motorola (with Lenovo’s backing, of course) has managed to make a foldable phone so quickly.

Motorola has also beaten Samsung to the punch with the clamshell foldable form factor, and its design for the hinge that makes the folding display possible is seemingly better as well, with no visible gaps that would make durability as much of a concern as the hinge on the Galaxy Fold turned out to be. Of course, whether the Razr will be more — or similarly — durable in the real world is a question that will only be answered after it has gone on sale in January next year, but at first glance, it appears to be an extremely well thought out device.

The Razr doesn’t have a visible crease on the foldable display, either, but it does lack the specs to take on the Galaxy Fold, especially for its $1500 price tag. Specs like a Snapdragon 710 SoC, a single 16MP rear camera, and a single 5MP shooter on the front make the Razr a decidedly mid-range phone that will be further outdated by the time it goes on sale. It has a pretty small battery as well, although that may be a unavoidable limitation because of the clamshell foldable form factor, one that could also affect the Galaxy Fold 2.

Motorola is no doubt hoping the Razr will attract customers on the nostalgia factor alone, and we can see that strategy working well despite the underwhelming specs. And here’s what we want to ask you, our readers: Would you buy the Motorola Razr over the Galaxy Fold? Vote in the poll below, and also tell us in more detail why you would choose — or not choose — either device down in the comments!

Results: It seems the Motorola Razr’s design has impressed many, with 42 percent voters saying they would buy the Razr because of its form factor (and given the nostalgia factor, we don’t blame them). 27 percent voters said they prefer the Galaxy Fold, and that’s the category we here at SamMobile fall in as well, as there’s just something special about carrying a phone-sized tablet in your pocket. 18 percent voters said they wouldn’t buy either the Razr or Fold as they aren’t interested in first-gen products, while the remaining 13 percent voters believe the Razr’s specs are too weak.

Unlocked Galaxy S8 gets November security update in the US

The unlocked Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ are receiving a new software update in the US and are making the jump to the latest Android security patch in the process. This is the second update Samsung has released for the unlocked S8 and S8+ this month. The previous update included the October security patch and, therefore, didn’t bring a fix for a critical vulnerability that affected the 2017 flagship.

The vulnerability in question wasn’t just discovered in the Galaxy S8, but it was one of three Galaxy phones included in the list of affected devices when the vulnerability was publicly revealed. Google’s fix for the vulnerability came as part of the October security patch, but Samsung is releasing it through the November update for all of its devices. The November patch should also plug a vulnerability in Samsung’s Camera app that can allow malicious apps to record photos and videos without the user’s content.

As always, there are multiple ways you can grab the latest update. You can download it over the air straight to your Galaxy S8 and S8+ from the Software update menu of the phone’s Settings app, or you can upgrade by downloading the latest firmware from our firmware archive and flashing it on your S8 or S8+ using a Windows PC. The software version for the new update is G95*U1UES7DSK4.

AT&T’s consumer 5G network will debut with the Galaxy Note 10+ 5G

AT&T is all set to join Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint in offering 5G services to its customers, and the carrier has announced that the Galaxy Note 10+ 5G will be the first 5G-equipped smartphone it will offer. AT&T’s 5G network for the general public will be available in Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, Providence, Rhode Island, Rochester, New York, and San Diego in the next few weeks and will later expand to other cities by February 2020.

The Galaxy Note 10+ 5G will go up for pre-order from AT&T on November 25 for $1299 off-contract and $43.34 on AT&T’s installment plan. The phone will be available in Aura Glow and Aura Black color options. The Note 10+ 5G is the same phone as the regular Galaxy Note 10+ except for the faster connectivity, which means you get what is the best flagship phone Samsung has launched this year. Well, unless you absolutely must have a headphone jack on your phone, in which case you will not find any 5G-enabled Galaxy smartphone on AT&T’s network that matches your requirement.
