Samsung breaks new 5G upload speed record in Texas

Samsung broke another industry speed record for 5G, the company announced today. Specifically, Samsung collaborated with Verizon and Qualcomm to conduct a 5G demonstration in Plano, Texas, where a record-breaking data upload speed of 711 Mbps was achieved.

In practical terms, an upload rate of 711 Mbps would allow a user to upload a 1GB video file in roughly 10 seconds. The transfer rate is fast enough to allow high-definition videos to be recorded and uploaded to the cloud or on social media in real-time.

5G technologies that can achieve these high transfer rates are expected to be widely used by enterprises. The technology can be utilized on the production line for real-time image analysis and defect detection, and thus, it can improve manufacturing.

How did Samsung achieve 711 Mbps upload on 5G?

The demonstration was done using Samsung’s 5G and 4G base stations and the Snapdragon X65 5G modem.

More specifically, the high upload rate was achieved through carrier aggregation technology by combining two or more frequency bands in Samsung’s 5G Compact Macro solution. The same 5G mmWave Compact Macro station was used by Samsung to speed up transfer rates in Seoul’s Metro network during a demonstration held last month.

According to the VP of Samsung Electronics’ Network Business Development Team, the company is “one step closer to realizing a differentiated 5G service and an immersive user experience” thanks to this demonstration.

Samsung led the market in Q3 but the shopping season is looking grim

The global semiconductor shortage has hit the smartphone market hard in the third quarter of the year, reveals a preliminary market report from Canalys. Worldwide smartphone shipments dropped 6% year-on-year, but not much has changed for Samsung regarding market share.

In the 3rd quarter of the year, Samsung held a global smartphone market share of 23% based on shipments — unchanged from a year ago. The company remained the reigning champion, while other OEM’s, including Apple, Vivo, and Oppo (including OnePlus) managed to increase their shares marginally. Apple was even able to steal the 2nd place back from Xiaomi. According to Canalys, strong demand for the iPhone 13 contributed to this outcome.

We may not see as many holiday discounts this year

The global semiconductor shortage won’t ease “until well into 2022,” said Canalys Principal Analyst, Ben Stanton. Chip manufacturers have gradually increased prices to close the supply and demand gap, and this could lead to a gradual increase in smartphone prices.

Smartphone brands are attempting to mitigate the damage and match the high demand by making last-minute changes in the supply chain, but according to the source, this often leads to miscommunications with retail and distribution channels.

The situation could worsen at the end of the year, as demand will be even higher around the holiday shopping season. Inventories are already running low, and some retail channels are reportedly reluctant to offer holiday deals because they fear they might not be able to fulfill them.

Given the high demand and low supply, we might not see too many discounts on Samsung products around the holiday shopping season, but Canalys estimates that smartphone brands will offer IoT and wearable product bundles to try pleasing customers.

You can still buy the Galaxy Buds+ for cheap in the USA to this day

Samsung seemingly discontinued the Galaxy Buds+ a couple of months ago. Although the Cosmic Black variant continues to be listed on Samsung’s website in the USA, it’s no longer in stock, and it hasn’t been for a while now. However, if you are looking to buy a pair of wireless earbuds, the Galaxy Buds+ can still be yours for the low price of $99, as long as you buy them from Amazon.

The Galaxy Buds+ earbuds are now available from Amazon in the USA for $99 as opposed to $149. However, this discounted price applies to the black, blue, and white color options. The red Galaxy Buds+ retain their original $149 price tag. And if you apply for an Amazon Reward Visa Card, you get a $50 Gift Card which can then be used when purchasing the earbuds. In theory, you could buy the Galaxy Buds+ for just $49.99.

It’s been almost two years since the Galaxy Buds+ got introduced by Samsung for $149, and since then, the company has released three new wireless earbuds, including the Galaxy Buds Live, the Buds Pro, and more recently, the Buds 2. Unlike these latest models, the Galaxy Buds+ earbuds don’t have active noise cancelation (ANC) technology, but they can still deliver good sound quality and battery life. Check our review below for more details.

Samsung Galaxy becomes Team Gullit’s first shirt sponsor for FIFA 22

Samsung is no stranger to the world of eSports. The company managed its own team for a few years, and it continues sponsoring various other eSports teams and events every year. Samsung recently found another eSports partner in the Team Gullit FIFA academy, whose jerseys will now have a sponsor for the first time.

The sponsor — Samsung Galaxy — will be featured on Team Gullit’s FIFA 22 kit, as seen in the promotional video below. Samsung Galaxy is the first shirt sponsor for Team Gullit, the latter of which was also the first professional and independent FIFA academy in the world when it was launched at the beginning of 2018 by none other than football star Ruud Gullit.

Team Gullit offers mentorship and training for professional FIFA players. It also helps players combine school and gaming, and it teaches young players how to build a personal brand. There’s also an official Team Gullit store where fans can buy jerseys. The gear sponsored by Samsung Galaxy will likely be available for purchase from the store throughout the 2022 season. The virtual Team Gullit kit will be available in the FIFA 22 video game from October 21.

As Team Gullit’s first shirt sponsor, Samsung is happy to “contribute to a new generation of FIFA Players through the FIFA academy and countless activities,” said Gerben van Walt Meijer, Head of Marketing at Samsung Netherlands (via AD).

Unpacked 2 teaser video hints at more colors for 2021 Samsung foldables

Samsung will host Galaxy Unpacked 2 on October 20. Although the company hasn’t outright specified what we’ll be seeing on stage next week, Samsung did publish a Galaxy Unpacked 2 teaser video earlier today. It suggests that the event will be focused on foldable devices and the idea of personalizing one’s smartphone with a much wider range of color options.

The video is entirely CGI and depicts three alien creatures in what appears to be a paint factory, i.e., a Galaxy Studio. They’re looking at a huge color palette on a large display, and they mix in new colors by playing around with different buttons and knobs. The short CGI sequence is followed by the caption “Get ready to unfold something unmistakably you.”

There’s no outright mention of the Galaxy Z Fold 3 or the Galaxy Z Flip 3. However, the caption should be a big enough clue that the October 20th event will center around Samsung’s new foldable phones. Presumably, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 will get a new range of color options or even a dedicated design studio where customers can mix and match colors for different external components.

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 were released in a handful of colors, and customers in select markets can pick exclusive color combinations when ordering the phone online through Samsung’s website. Perhaps Samsung will expand upon this concept further, but time will tell. Thankfully, we won’t have to wait much longer before we find out exactly what Galaxy Unpacked 2 is all about.

WhatsApp can now make your Google Drive backups more secure

It’s been a few years since WhatsApp began encrypting messages sent between users, and recently, the company announced that it would soon add the option to encrypt chat backups stored in the cloud, as well. That feature has been available to beta testers for some time and is now arriving on the public version of WhatsApp worldwide.

The process of backing up chats and media to Google Drive on the app isn’t changing, but WhatsApp will now show an additional option of generating a 64-digit encryption key for those backups. The encryption key can be stored locally or wherever the user chooses and can be used to decrypt their Google Drive backup when the need arises. WhatsApp will also provide a cloud-based vault where the encryption key can be stored and secured behind a password.

In addition to making cloud backups more secure, WhatsApp is also working on allowing users to determine the contents of their chat backup so they can make those backups smaller. This particular feature could be in development partly because Google has been getting stingier about the amount of free storage it provides to users across services and could soon start counting WhatsApp backups against a user’s storage quota, something that isn’t the case right now.

If you use WhatsApp on your Galaxy device, you should be able to update it via the Google Play Store to get access to the new backup encryption feature. An update may not be immediately available, but it should show up in the near future.

iPhone 13 helped Samsung sell a lot more of its OLED panels

Supplying components to other companies is a big part of Samsung’s business. As far as mobile OLED panels are concerned, there’s no one that can match Samsung’s quality and production capacity.

So it’s no surprise to see that even Apple sources the OLED panels for its iPhones from Samsung. The two companies are otherwise tough competitors in the smartphone market, but they do have a symbiotic relationship.

Samsung’s foldable OLED panel shipments are picking up as well

Samsung Display has seen a significant increase in its OLED shipments for Q3 2021. The launch of the iPhone 13 has contributed to that. Data from UBI Research shows that Samsung shipped 124.76 million OLED panels in the third quarter of this year. Shipments are up 24.6% compared to Q2 2021.

OLED panels for mid-range and low-end smartphones accounted for 50.2% or 62.63 million units of its total shipments for the quarter. Flexible OLED panels used in Samsung’s high-end phones and Apple’s iPhones accounted for 46.6% or 58.2 million units of the total. Out of these, 38.31 million units were shipped to Apple, almost double the supply that Cupertino got from Samsung in Q3 2020.

Samsung Display also shipped 3.93 million units of foldable OLED panels, representing 3.2% of its total shipments. All of these panels were utilized by Samsung Electronics for the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the Galaxy Z Flip 3. The clamshell foldable has been doing very well. No wonder that foldable OLED panel supply for the Galaxy Z Flip 3 was double that of the Galaxy Z Fold 3.

The share of Samsung’s foldable OLED displays will continue to increase in the future. Samsung is expected to further expand its foldable smartphone lineup. Other companies that may be thinking of launching foldable smartphones may also need to source these OLEDs from Samsung Display.
