September security update out for Galaxy A8+ (2018), A8 (2016), and more

Samsung is updating a number of mid-range devices with the September 2018 security patch. These devices include the Galaxy A8 (2016), Galaxy A8+ (2018), the Galaxy C7, and the new Galaxy A8 Star. Samsung has already updated its flagships with the September patch, and more of the company’s devices should be getting a similar update in the coming days.

Galaxy A8 Star update also includes a Galaxy Note 9 camera feature

The September 2018 security patch doesn’t involve fixes for any widespread vulnerabilities, but it does fix more than the usual number of critical vulnerabilities in Android and an even higher number of vulnerabilities in Samsung’s software. The Galaxy A8 Star update is also special because it brings support for AR Emoji in the camera app and also the new Scene Optimizer feature from the Galaxy Note 9. Scene Optimizer is a funky way to say the camera will now better detect the type of scene and subject being captured. While it doesn’t seem to make any difference, it would be nice to see Samsung bringing it to other flagships as well (something that may yet happen with the Android 9.0 Pie update).

To see if the September update is available for your phone, open the Settings app, tap Software update, then tap Download updates manually. You can also download the firmware from our database for a manual upgrade. Do tell us if you see any new features or notable changes once the update has been installed.

Samsung Fortnite contest for the Galaxy Note 9 offers great prizes

The Samsung Fortnite contest has been announced today. It’s open for the Galaxy Note 9 and Galaxy Tab S4 users in the US and offers great prizes. The company will pick four winners and award them $5250 worth of prizes which include a 65-inch QLED TV (Q9FN), a 49-inch CHG90 gaming monitor, and a pair of AKG N700NC wireless noise cancellation headphones.

In addition, Samsung will also pick 100 runners-up and award them the same AKG N700NC headphones. The company is running the contest in collaboration with the well-known streamer Tyler Blevins, commonly known as Ninja in the gaming circles. One of the grand prize winners will also get an opportunity to stream the game with Ninja on Twitch for two hours.

Just play Fortnite on your Galaxy Note 9 or Tab S4

All that you have to do to enter the contest is to load the Fornite game on your Galaxy Note 9 or Tab S4, claim the exclusive ‘Galaxy’ skin, play the game and screenshot or record your gameplay. Once that is done, share the clip on Twitter or Instagram by using the #NinjaGalaxySquad and #contest hashtags in your post. You also need to follow the Samsung Mobile US handle on Twitter or Instagram for your entry to count.

There will be one grand prize winner who gets a spot on Ninja’s squad to play Fortnite live on Twitch for up to two hours on October 9th in addition to the TV, monitor, and headphones that the three first prize winners will get. The prizes have an approximate retail value for $7,000.

Entries are limited to one per person. The contest begins today and ends on September 30. You can read more about the contest rules here. Since all that you have do is play the game to enter the contest, maybe it’s worth giving a try.

Galaxy F foldable smartphone may not feature Gorilla Glass

According to a new report, the Galaxy F foldable smartphone may not have Gorilla Glass protection. Corning makes this special cover glass used for the protection of display panels. Samsung also uses Gorilla Glass on many of its other smartphones. The report suggests that the company’s much-awaited foldable smartphone may not use Gorilla Glass due to technological limitations.

Samsung has already said that it wants to launch the first proper foldable smartphone. However, it may not be released until next year. Samsung hasn’t confirmed what it will be called. The Galaxy F is what the company might end up calling it.

Galaxy F foldable smartphone to not have Gorilla Glass protection

The report points out that Samsung can’t use Gorilla Glass for the Galaxy F due to the former’s rigid nature. The strong glass wouldn’t allow the device to fold into half. Samsung will thus use a transparent polyimide supplied by Sumitomo Chemical of Japan. It would be less durable than Gorilla Glass but would allow the Galaxy F to retain its flexible form factor.

Foldable smartphones expected to gain popularity in the coming years. It’s thus no surprise that Corning has reportedly developed a flexible glass solution too. Samsung has reportedly decided against using that solution for the Galaxy F and will use Sumitomo’s polyimide instead.

Samsung’s foldable smartphone has already been the subject of many reports and leaks. Rumors about it have been circulating for years. The company confirmed only recently that it’s working on it. Samsung has also revealed that it will unveil the device at its developers’ conference this November.

It may not release the device in November, though. Galaxy F may not be released until early next year. Samsung apparently wants to unveil it early so that it can lay claim to the title of having made the world’s first proper foldable smartphone.

Galaxy A7 (2018) price is expected to be around $400

This is the first we’re hearing of the expected Galaxy A7 (2018) price. Samsung’s upcoming mid-range device with three rear cameras is expected to cost around $400. The company hasn’t confirmed it officially. The figure comes from a third-party who has also provided additional renders of the device.

We reported on the first leaked live image of the device earlier today. Official press renders of the Galaxy A7 (2018) surfaced later in the day. Additional renders have now been posted online in addition to the expected price point of this device.

Galaxy A7 (2018) price

The Galaxy A7 (2018) is expected to cost €348 in Europe. That is equal to just over $400. It’s obviously not going to be a straight price conversion in other markets but you can get an idea of the range.

A considerable amount of information is known about this device. It’s going to have an Infinity Display with rounded corners up front. There’s also going to be a triple-camera system at the back. The renders that arrived earlier today revealed that it will have a side-mounted fingerprint sensor.

Samsung is yet to say anything about this device let alone confirm its specs. What reports suggest is that the Galaxy A7 (2018) specs will be similar to the Galaxy A8+ (2018). Expect the device to feature an Exynos 7885 processor coupled with 6GB RAM and 64GB storage.

The earlier renders showed off the device in black and blue colors. These latest images reveal that gold is going to be a color option for this device as well. It’s not known right now when Samsung is going to officially announce this handset. The markets for which this device is destined aren’t known at this point in time as well.

The company is conducting an event on October 11th to launch a new device. It’s possible that this device may be unveiled on October 11th alongside the Galaxy A9. That’s likely going to be Samsung’s first smartphone with four rear-cameras.

Samsung and Telefónica Deutschland team up for 5G FWA trials in Germany

Samsung has been working with many telecom operators around the world to develop and deploy 5G networks in the near future. The company and its industry partners have been conducting many demos and trials to test their 5G solutions and drum up the excitement for the launch of 5G networks.

The latest in the series of these collaborations is the coming together of Samsung and Telefónica Deutschland to run 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) trials in Germany. The trial involves 20 households in Hamburg testing the Gigabit technology over a period of three months, starting this November.

Trial uses Samsung’s end-to-end 5G solution

Samsung will provide the “end-to-end millimeter wave (26 GHz) solution” for the trial. It consists of specialized hardware and software such as a virtual core, a 5G radio access unit, outdoor CPE, indoor routers, etc. to enable Gigabit speeds without any fiber-optic cables. The trial intends to showcase an “attractive alternative” to the current Gigabit solutions which suffer from last mile connectivity issues.

“5G FWA is a promising, fast-to-market and cost-effective way to bring Giga-speed broadband to people across the country, and a viable alternative where fiber deployment is not feasible,” said GY Seo, Senior Vice President and Head of Global Sales & Marketing Team, Networks Business at Samsung Electronics.

Samsung launches LED for Home screens for the super-rich in India

Samsung makes TVs at various price points to target different customer segments in the market. The company is expanding the lineup further by launching the ‘LED for Home’ range in India. Though the company doesn’t refer to them as TVs anywhere in the press release, these LED screens, also called Active LED, are essentially large TVs targeting affluent customers.

These super-premium screens come with ‘HDR Picture Refinement Technology’ for great visuals, unaffected by any ambient light. The screens are low maintenance and boast a lifespan of 100,000+ hours. They come with a ‘Modular Formation Technology’ which allows users to customize the size and shape of the screen to fit into any home setting.

Samsung LED for Home is aimed at the super-rich

Samsung says these Active LED screens are aimed at “HNIs (high net-worth individuals), working professionals, and affluent and aspirational millennials,” or simply put the super-rich. The ‘LED for Home’ screens come in 110-inch FHD, 130-inch FHD, 220-inch UHD, and 260-inch UHD variants, with prices ranging from INR 1 crore – 3.5 crores ($137,500 – $481,000) depending on the screen size.

“At Samsung, our focus has always been on customer delight. This latest device is a consequence of us listening to our customers and understanding their wants and needs. We are dedicated in providing consumers with a wide range of cutting-edge display experiences,” said Mr. Puneet Sethi, VP, Consumer Electronics Enterprise Business, Samsung India.

Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) press renders confirm triple-camera setup

We saw a leaked live image of the Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) earlier today. The image revealed that this device will have three rear-facing cameras. The official press renders of this device have now been leaked online. They confirm that the Galaxy A7 (2018) will indeed feature a triple-camera setup.

There were rumors that this smartphone may have a total of five cameras. We can see in these renders that there’s no dual-camera upfront. The Galaxy A7 (2018) is different from the quad-rear camera phone that Samsung also has up its sleeve.

Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) press renders

This handset’s specs are likely similar to that of the Galaxy A8+ (2018). The design similarities are certainly there. The Galaxy A7 (2018) features an Infinity Display which is a permanent fixture on most of Samsung’s mid-range devices now.

This is most likely Samsung’s first device with three rear-facing cameras. The Galaxy S10 was believed to get this crown for the longest time. The Galaxy A7 (2018) is likely going to be launched in the near future while the Galaxy S10 isn’t due until next year.

No fingerprint sensor can be seen at the back in these renders. That’s because the Galaxy A7 (2018) also features a side-mounted sensor. It won’t be the only Samsung device with the sensor on the frame. We have already posted images of the Galaxy J6+ which show that it will have a side-mounted fingerprint sensor as well.

The camera specs haven’t been revealed at this point in time. It will be the biggest selling point of this device. Samsung has never made a triple-camera smartphone before. The other specs will be similar to the Galaxy A8+ (2018). It features an Exynos 7885 processor with 6GB RAM and 64GB storage.

It’s not known right now when the Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) is going to be announced. Samsung does have an announcement scheduled for October 11th. It’s expected to launch the quad-rear camera Galaxy A9 at this event. Perhaps the Galaxy A7 (2018) might be on the agenda as well.

Galaxy J6+ and Galaxy J4+ pictures revealed ahead of launch

Samsung is soon going to launch the Galaxy J6+ and the Galaxy J4+. Samsung India has already put up a teaser for the devices. The new mid-range handsets are expected to arrive in the coming week. We now have pictures of the Galaxy J6+ and Galaxy J4+ which show off both new devices in all their glory.

Reports suggest that the Galaxy J6+ will have a side-mounted fingerprint sensor. It would be on the frame as recently seen in a leaked dummy unit. These images do show a side-mounted fingerprint sensor on the Galaxy J6+. The handset also features a dual camera system at the back.

Galaxy J6+ and Galaxy J4+ pictures

The Galaxy J6+ and Galaxy J4+ pictures come from Dutch retailer Belsimpel. It has listed both handsets on its website ahead of the official launch. The listings also contain some specs of the devices.

The Galaxy J6+ will feature a 6-inch 1480×720 pixel resolution display. It’s powered by the Snapdragon 425 with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. Other features include a 3,300mAh battery, dual-SIM support and Android 8.1 Oreo.

Samsung’s Galaxy J4+ gets a 6-inch 1480×720 pixel resolution display. The Snapdragon 425 is under the hood with 2GB of RAM and 32GB storage. It also features a 3,300mAh battery, dual-SIM support and Android 8.1 Oreo. The handset does not have a fingerprint sensor.

The retailer mentions €189 ($220) and €239 ($280) as the prices for the Galaxy J4+ and the Galaxy J6+ respectively. The Galaxy J6+ will be available in gray, red and black colors. Samsung will offer the Galaxy J4+ in pink, gold and black colors. It doesn’t mention when the devices will be available. It may not be long now before Samsung officially announces these mid-range devices.

Galaxy A7 (2018) leak shows three rear-facing cameras

A new Galaxy A7 (2018) leak has surfaced online today and it shows three rear-facing cameras on the device. Samsung may release a handset with a triple-camera setup in the near future. The company has already said that it plans on introducing new technologies with mid-range devices first. This means that the Galaxy S10 may not be its first smartphone with three rear-facing cameras.

A Bluetooth certification revealed last week that Samsung isn’t done with using the Galaxy A7 moniker for a mid-range smartphone. It launched the Galaxy A8 (2018) and Galaxy A8+ (2018) as this year’s iterations of the Galaxy A5 and Galaxy A7. The certification revealed that this device will have the model number SM-A750FN.

Galaxy A7 (2018) leak reveals triple-camera system

This Galaxy A7 (2018) doesn’t provide any further information about the specs of the device. We can see the triple-camera setup in the image and it’s also said that this device is going to have a side-mounted fingerprint sensor much like the upcoming Galaxy J6+.

As far as the specs are concerned, they may be similar to that of the Galaxy A8+ (2018). That handset features a 6-inch 2220×1080 pixel resolution display, an Exynos 7885 processor with up to 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage.

The Galaxy A7 (2018) will be part of the new wave of mid-range devices from Samsung. It’s preparing them to better compete in this segment. It’s likely that the device may come with additional improvements. Reports suggest that the company’s new mid-range smartphones will introduce technologies such as an in-display fingerprint sensor and even a four-camera system at the back.

It’s unclear at this point in time when Samsung intends to launch this device. The company hasn’t dropped any hints about the Galaxy A7 (2018) so far. Are you looking forward to smartphones from Samsung that match what some of its Chinese rivals have been doing? Let us know in the comments below.
