Galaxy S8 on-screen buttons may be customizable

Just a week ago, we got something of a first look at the new on-screen buttons that have been rumored to arrive on the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. Well, now, we’re getting word that the Galaxy S8 on-screen buttons may be customizable, allowing users to change them to fit their liking.

Android Police, a credible site regarding leaks of Google’s Nexus (and now Pixel) line, among other things, says that a new photo making the rounds is showing that the on-screen navigation buttons on a phone presumed to be the Galaxy S8 have different arrangements on two different models. One Galaxy S8 photo shows the back key on the left, while another photo shows the back key on the right in its usual location (the back capacitive key is on the right on recent devices such as the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge).

Galaxy S8 on-screen buttons reverse

Now, we want to make it clear: nothing has been confirmed as of yet. The most we have to go on are the photos showing the different software key configurations; that’s it. As for customizable navigation buttons, though, Samsung won’t be the first Android OEM to do it. LG, for example, offers the same functionality on recent devices such as the LG G5 and LG V20 (LG even provides a notification drop-down key so that you don’t have to manually pull down the notification shade yourself).

We’ll see where this rumor goes, but for now, as with everything else that isn’t confirmed from the company’s mouth, take it all with a grain of salt.

Galaxy S7 edge wins Best Smartphone award at MWC 2017

There’s no denying the fact that the Galaxy S7 edge is a fantastic smartphone. The handset has already received several awards and Samsung will now have to make some room on the shelf because its 2016 flagship has won another. The GSMA has recognized the Galaxy S7 edge as the “Best Smartphone” in the Best Mobile Handsets and Devices category at the annual Global Mobile Awards at the Mobile World Congress 2017 in Barcelona. The Galaxy S7 edge has received this award for its refined design, great camera and outstanding performance.

“We are honored to be recognized for our craftsmanship in design and innovation with the Galaxy S7 edge,” said Junho Park, Vice President of Global Product Strategy, Mobile Communications Business at Samsung Electronics, adding that this award is a testament to Samsung’s constant pursuit of excellence as it continues to exceed consumers’ expectations.

This award certainly caps off a great year for the Galaxy S7 edge as it’s set to bow out in the coming weeks because on March 29, Samsung is going to finally unveil the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus. The company will certainly be hoping that it does just as well if not better than the Galaxy S7 did.

Galaxy S6 edge+ with Nougat receives Wi-Fi certification

Samsung released the Android 7.0 Nougat update for the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge last month and we know that the company has been working on this update for other devices like the Galaxy S6 series and the Galaxy Note 5 as well. The company hasn’t released the update for said devices just yet but it’s expected to do so in the near future.

We’ve now spotted the Galaxy S6 edge+ with Nougat receiving its Wi-Fi certification which suggests that it may not be too long before this handset is bumped up to Android 7.0. However, Samsung hasn’t confirmed as yet when it’s going to do this for the Galaxy S6 edge+.

I should mention here that the detailed Nougat release roadmap shared by Samsung Turkey recently pointed out that the Galaxy S6 edge+ would receive its Nougat update in the second week of March. If the dates in its roadmap are accurate then we could see this handset receive Nougat in other markets across the globe around the same time as well.

We’ll be sure to update you as and when more information surfaces about Nougat for the Galaxy S6 edge+.

Samsung is on the hunt for innovative startups

Samsung launched the Creative Square incubation program in April last year, the program nurtures innovative ideas from early-stage startups. It helps them in the development of their ideas as well as with market rollout within Samsung’s global platform. Startups that are part of Samsung’s incubation program receive funding for research and development, mentoring by experts and business cooperation.

Samsung is in Barcelona for the Mobile World Congress 2017 and it’s highlighting some of the startups that are part of its incubation program such as Neowayz which has developed a Home Smart Pregnancy Total Solution Kit, a smart pet toy for dog exercise called Gomi and the chatbot buidling platform fluenty.

Early-stage startups looking for a helping hand should try getting in touch with Samsung and see if it has a place for them in its Creative Square. They can get in touch with the relevant department by sending an email at idea.startup@samsung.com.

Samsung Flow is coming to more Galaxy and Windows 10 devices

We had reported last week that Samsung would release its Samsung Flow app to all Windows 10-powered devices. Now, the South Korean company has officially announced their plans to roll out Samsung Flow to more Galaxy devices as well as all Windows 10 tablets and PCs.

The productivity-boosting app comes preloaded with the newly unveiled Galaxy Tab S3 and the Galaxy Book. It allows users to unlock their tablets and PCs using the fingerprint authentication on compatible Galaxy smartphones. The Samsung Flow app uses Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections to keep devices paired.

Users can also get smartphone notifications mirrored to their Galaxy and Windows 10 tablets, laptops and PCs, and even reply to them. Data such as images, videos, and documents can be shared both ways between a paired Galaxy smartphone and a compatible tablet or PC.

Tizen 3.0 could debut on the Samsung Z400F instead of the Z250F

We reported last month that the SM-Z250F would be the first smartphone running Tizen 3.0, but it appears that there a change of plans. As per the latest information that we’ve received, the SM-Z400F would be the first phone running the newer version of Tizen.

Samsung is reportedly developing the SM-Z400F in India, and the device expected to have better specifications than previous Tizen smartphones from Samsung. We’re not sure whether Samsung has just changed the model number of if it’s a new device altogether.

The company might bring some form of artificial intelligence to Tizen 3.0 smartphones for better voice command results. The development of Tizen 3.0 is taking longer than expected, and South Korea’s FTC is investigating whether Google thwarted Tizen’s development.

Samsung is in the midst of rolling out the much-anticipated Nougat update for the Galaxy S7 (SM-G930F) and Galaxy S7 edge (SM-G935F) in Indonesia. The best features of the Samsung Galaxy Tab S3

The Galaxy Tab S3 is Samsung’s latest Android tablet with a Super AMOLED display, and it brings some interesting new features that make it a far larger upgrade over the Galaxy Tab S2 than the latter was over the original Galaxy Tab S. Be it the four AKG-tuned loudspeakers or the HDR capable display, the Tab S3 has the makings of a flagship product that is designed to impress. We certainly liked what we saw during our hands-on time with the tablet, and here are what we think are the best features on offer.

Speakers tuned by AKG

This is no doubt the most notable feature, not just for the Galaxy Tab S3 but Samsung’s future smartphones as well. Samsung confirmed yesterday that it had started working with Harman before it decided to acquire the brand, and the first fruit of that partnership comes in the form of the Tab S3. Each of the four loudspeakers on the tablet has been tuned by AKG (which is an audio company owned by Harman, and therefore Samsung once the merger goes through).

As you can hear in this video, the sound from the Tab S3 is fuller and more immersive than what its predecessor could manage, and the audio output is likely to be even better in the confines of a consumer’s home, which is always a less noisy environment than an exhibition like the Mobile World Congress.

The best features of the Samsung Galaxy Tab S3

Super AMOLED display with HDR

Even in general, there is nothing better than Samsung’s Super AMOLED display technology in the world of smartphone and tablet displays, and the Galaxy Tab S3 is geared towards an enhanced video viewing experience with its HDR capabilities. The Galaxy Note 7 was the first showcase for an HDR-enabled AMOLED display, and the 9.7-inch display on the Tab S3 is a bigger playground for videos with richer colors and improved contrast ratios. Yes, HDR videos aren’t exactly easy to come by, but with platforms like YouTube and Amazon Prime supporting HDR video, the collection is likely to grow as time goes by.

The best features of the Samsung Galaxy Tab S3

S Pen

Do we even need to say anything here? The S Pen is the definitive stylus in the mobile industry, and Samsung is finally offering it on the Galaxy Tab S lineup. We should point out that this marks the first time the S Pen is being bundled on an “S” line of Samsung products, and who knows, maybe the Galaxy S8 will continue the trend later this year. But before we digress, let’s just say the S Pen makes for an attractive feature on the Galaxy Tab S3, especially since this is the same high-quality stylus that accompanied the Galaxy Note 7.

Premium design

The best features of the Samsung Galaxy Tab S3

We’re not sure this will be seen as a positive by everyone, but the Galaxy Tab S3 is the most premium tablet built by Samsung yet. It’s got glass on the front and back and metal on the sides, just like Samsung’s flagship and recent mid-range smartphones. It feels great in the hands, and while the glass build can be slippery, it shouldn’t pose a huge problem as tablets aren’t usually operated on-the-go like a smartphone.

There is a lot to like on the Galaxy Tab S3, and Samsung has made it clear that the tablet market is still important for the company. Whether sales match the company’s ambitions is something that remains to be seen, especially since Samsung has priced the Tab S3 much higher than previous devices in the lineup. It’s certainly got enough features to warrant the high price, however, and we think the Tab S3 is an amazing attempt from Samsung towards making the Android tablet more premium and desirable.

What do you think of the Galaxy Tab S3? Is there another feature you think warrants a place up in that list? Do let us know in the comments, and don’t forget to take a look at our hands-on experience with the tablet. For a comparison of the Tab S3′s specs with the Galaxy Tab S2 and the original Galaxy Tab S, go here and here.

Samsung showcases improved ‘Project Beyond’ 3D 360-degree camera at MWC

Samsung showcased its ‘Project Beyond‘ concept 360-degree camera for professionals two years ago. It featured 17 Full HD cameras with wide-angle optics and a versatile mount. However, it was the company’s very first concept product for capturing 3D 360-degree imagery. Now, the company has improved it even further to showcase a new prototype.

The South Korean electronics giant is displaying an improved Project Beyond camera at MWC 2017, and the company is simply calling it 3D 360 Camera. It features 18 cameras (one more than its last product), a D-pad for controlling the camera UI, and a small screen at the top of the device. It can also capture 360-degree surround sound using 6ea microphone.

It can not only capture 360-degree 2D/3D high-quality videos but also live stream them. There’s a memory card slot and a single cable for connecting to PCs. Samsung claims that it is suitable for indoor and outdoor shooting as it is IP65 for dust and water resistance. It is also compatible with external SSD and battery for extended duration recordings.

The company hasn’t revealed any release date for this camera or a price tag, so it’s still pretty much a prototype device and may not be released anytime soon for customers.

Samsung demonstrates 5G Guaranteed Latency with Deutsche Telekom at MWC 2017

Samsung announced today that it successfully showcased 5G Guaranteed Latency (GLA) as an end-to-end network slice with Deutsche Telekom at the Mobile World Congress 2017 in Barcelona. GLA is a key differentiator which sets 5G technology apart from 4G. It’s believed to be very critical for the 5G era as it allows for latency control as per the requirements of specific use cases.

The live demonstration was conducted at Deutsche Telekom’s booth in which two robotic arms were connected to Samsung’s 5G radio system that uses GLA technology. When GLA was switched on for both robotic arms for the guarantee of low and controlled latency, they were able to successfully deliver a box from point A to B while moving in synchronous harmony within the set amount of time. However, when GLA was only applied to one of the arms, the difference in latencies caused the arms to differ in speed which caused them to drop the box.

“The 5G GLA showcase, jointly conducted with Deutsche Telekom, has proven that an accurate and stable operation of latency control is a feasible concept. We believe that this is a key element in enabling operators to create new business models, including industrial use cases,” said Youngky Kim, President and Head of the Networks Business at Samsung Electronics.

Samsung is also conducting 5G network trials with carriers in major markets across the globe to push for the commercialization of this next-generation network technology.
