Galaxy Z Flip release rumored for February 14 at $1,400

There was some speculation that Samsung’s next foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Z Flip, might be released before the Galaxy S20 hits the market. A new rumor making the rounds on Twitter now suggests that this just be the case.

It’s claimed that the Galaxy Z Flip is going to be released on February 14, just three days after Samsung unveils the device on February 11. The handset is also said to cost $1,400.

Fans may not have to wait long for the Galaxy Z Flip release

It’s also said that the Galaxy Z Flip might be a timed exclusive, being available only from AT&T in the United States initially. The handset would eventually be released on other carriers as well. Samsung is also going to offer an unlocked variant of the Galaxy Z Flip.

The $1,400 shouldn’t be surprising given what has recently been rumored for the device. First believed to cost under $1,000, it’s now understood that the foldable smartphone may not be as cheap as initially thought. It’s was expected to cost north of $1,300 in recent estimates so the $1,400 price tag seems plausible.

As far as the Galaxy S20 is concerned, the rumor is that it’s going to be released on the first Friday of March, which would make it March 6. The Galaxy S20 Ultra, Samsung’s top-tier model of the new series, is expected to start at $1,300.

None of this has been officially confirmed by Samsung at this point in time but it’s all within the realm of possibility. Samsung will be confirming the pricing and availability details for both the Galaxy Z Flip and the Galaxy S20 series on February 11 at its Unpacked event.

Galaxy A51 is coming to India in 2 days, Galaxy A71 could follow suit

Samsung India has just confirmed that the Galaxy A51 is only a couple of days away from its debut in the country. The announcement came via Twitter where Samsung began counting down the days until the phone’s arrival.

The Galaxy A51 support page went live in India last month and the device already launched in a few other countries since. It gave us ample time to prepare a full-fledged review for the device, so make sure to check that out if you’re waiting for the phone’s arrival in India yet you’re still unsure whether or not to buy it.

The Galaxy A51 will offer plenty for the buck

There are plenty of things to love about the Galaxy A51, from the excellent Infinity-O AMOLED display to the solid build and the inclusion of a standard 3.5mm headphone jack. It also has a quadruple main camera system enclosed in a rectangular cutout, comprising a 48MP main shooter, a 12MP ultra-wide sensor, and two 5MP telephoto and depth sensors. Then again, this isn’t the most powerful smartphone money can buy, so depending on what you’re looking for in a device, there may also be reasons for you to consider skipping it.

The Galaxy A51 will likely be subjected to a pre-order period of a few days or weeks beginning January 29. This should give you enough time to weigh the pros and cons of this mid-range device, and should you decide against buying it then the Galaxy A71 might be a better fit for you.

Samsung India didn’t mention anything new about the Galaxy A71, but we suspect that it might follow a launch schedule similar to the A51’s. We’ll keep you posted either way. The former has a Snapdragon 730 chipset instead of an Exynos 9611, more RAM, and better cameras.

With the launch of the Galaxy A51 and A71 in India, Samsung will hopefully be able to improve its market share and fight back its rivals from China.

  • Model: SM-A515F
  • Dimensions: 158.5 x 73.6 x 7.9mm
  • Display: 6.5" (164mm) Super AMOLED
  • CPU: Exynos 9611
  • Camera: 48 MP F1.8, 12MP Ultra-wide F2.2, 5MP Depth F2.2 & 5MP Macro F2.4

These various third-party Galaxy S20 series cases can now be yours

For better or for worse, the Galaxy S20 lineup has already been exposed in numerous leaked renders, leaving little-to-no mystery uncovered as far as the exterior design is concerned. There are plenty of reasons to be excited for the upcoming flagship series, from the adoption of a flatter display to a new and promising – as well as prominent – camera.

The new design calls for new official accessories, and various third-party case manufacturers have also started preparing a wide variety of cases, many of which are now available for order/pre-order via Mobile Fun ahead of the smartphone’s February 11 official unveiling. Let’s take a look at some of these cases and how they will look along with the new flagship.

Galaxy S20 third-party cases

The Galaxy S20 is going to be the smaller model of the three, and its camera hump will be less accentuated, therefore its cases have a smaller cutout. There are plenty of case designs to choose from, and as you can tell from the images below, the selection is quite varied, from simple bumpers to elegant and intricate/industrial designs.

Prospective buyers can now place orders for Galaxy S20 third-party cases including the Olixar NovaShield and Wallet Case, as well as the VRS Damda Glide Pro and Ghostek Nautical Slim 3.

Galaxy S20+ third-party cases

The Galaxy S20+ is the bridge between the S20 and the more ambitious S20 Ultra. It falls right in the middle in several respects, and this certainly includes the smartphone’s overall dimensions.

Mobile Fun is now selling Olixar Ultra-Thin and Carbon Fibre Galaxy S20+ cases, as well as the Ghostek Covert 4 and the VRS Damda Crystal Mixx Pro cases, with prices ranging from $7.99 to $21.99.

Galaxy S20 Ultra third-party cases

Last but certainly not least, the Galaxy S20 Ultra is going to bring the big guns and a camera configuration to match. It’s going to be the largest and most expensive Galaxy S20 variant, and if you’re looking to protect your investment then an official or third-party case is the best way to do it.

The online retailer is currently selling the Olixar Sentinel and Glass Screen Protector for $21.99. The Olixar Soft Silicone Case can be ordered for $10.99. The retailer also offers the VRS Genuine Leather Stand and Ghostek Atomic Slim 3 cases for $37.99 and $43.49, respectively.

Are you excited about the Galaxy S20 series? Which model do you think you’re going to buy when the series might be going on sale in March? Are you going to buy a protective case ahead of the smartphone’s release, to make the wait more bearable? Which one of these cases do you find more attractive and why? Join us in the comment section below and let us know.

Samsung loses 2nd place in India in Q4, according to conflicting report

Samsung India may have slipped into 3rd place in the smartphone space throughout Q4 2019, according to new data from Counterpoint Research cited by the Korean media. The new report seems to conflicts with another recent market analysis by IDC, which suggested that the company held 2nd place at the end of 2019.

Something that readers may or may not be aware of is the fact that different market research firms use different methods of research. In other words, their analysis will never paint a perfectly-accurate picture, and when two OEMs like Samsung and Vivo are battling very closely for the same spot, market watchers may end up with conflicting reports. Such is the case today. Counterpoint Research reports that Samsung held 19% of the Indian market throughout the October-December period; a similar figure as in IDC’s report.

However, according to Counterpoint Research, this was not enough for the company to secure a 2nd place on the podium. Samsung India slipped into 3rd in Q4 and Vivo overtook Samsung to sit between it and Xiaomi.

Whatever the reality of the situation may be, it’s quite evident that Samsung is doing battle with Vivo first and foremost, instead of being a real threat to Xiaomi in India. Hopefully, with the release of the new Galaxy M and Galaxy A (2020) lineups, things will pick up for Samsung once again, enough so that it can overtake Vivo this year and narrow the gap between it and the top spot on the podium.

Samsung Galaxy Fold sold out in record time again, this time in Brazil

Despite the Galaxy Fold launching in Brazil for more than $3,000, Samsung’s original foldable device has enjoyed as much success there as it did in pretty much every other market. The Galaxy Fold was officially confirmed to arrive in Brazil a week ago and it went on sale on January 22. Over the weekend, Samsung Brazil confirmed that the Galaxy Fold sold out in the country in less than 24 hours of availability.

This really has become the default story for the Galaxy Fold. It seems like no matter where the foldable device is making a new appearance, there are enough buyers to deplete stocks in less than a day. It’s not even entirely clear if this speaks more in favor of the foldable device’s desirability or Samsung’s ability to supply new markets with just enough units to last for around 24 hours, creating a sense that demand is much higher than it actually is. Maybe it’s both.

Whatever the case may be, the Galaxy Fold launched in Brazil for a premium price, even by the standards of a premium device, and sold out in record time. Limited stock or no, people still bought it like hotcakes, even now that the Galaxy Fold is literally closer to the Galaxy Z Flip‘s launch than it is to its own debut. There really seems to be a demand for foldable devices, and if the Galaxy Fold has yet to satiate this thirst then perhaps the Galaxy Z Flip will.

Samsung’s Lee Jae-yong visits Brazil after 19 years absence in LATAM

Samsung Electronics heir Lee Jae-yong spent the Lunar New Year holidays in Brazil, marking his first trip to Latin America in 19 years ever since he became part of Samsung’s top management. According to The Korea Herald, the company’s de facto leader met with Korean employees working at facilities in Brazil and discussed innovation, as well that the challenges that come along with it.

Lee Jae-yong was accompanied in Brazil by the company’s new mobile business head, Roh Tae-moon; the head of visual display, Han Jong-hee; and the head of the global technology center, Chang Si-ho. Roh Tae-moon only recently took the lead of the mobile business from DJ Koh, and he will be leading the charge against major rivals from China.

Brazil is an emerging market of great importance for Samsung. It is the biggest market in Latin America and the demand for various consumer electronics is rising. Proof of that is the fact that Brazil saw a wide variety of Samsung smartphone releases over the past year or so, ranging from the Galaxy A10s all the way up to the Galaxy Fold; the latter of which was released in Brazil just last week. The Korean company is looking to strengthen its position in this market early on, and the recent visit shows that Samsung is serious about achieving this goal.

Galaxy S10 Lite preview: Flagship-like specs, mid-range pricing

When Samsung unveiled the Galaxy S10 Lite, eyebrows were raised. There we were, just a couple of months away from the Galaxy S20’s arrival, and Samsung decided the Galaxy S10e wasn’t enough and that it needed yet another smartphone that can bring some Galaxy S10 features to a lower price point.

But don’t let the name fool you. It may be using the Galaxy S10 moniker, but it doesn’t really share too many specs with the other Galaxy S10 handsets. Its 6.7-inch screen is flat and is larger than what you find on the Galaxy S10+. It looks completely different from the back. Its camera setup has bigger numbers on paper, but it’s mostly a mid-range camera setup, with a lower-resolution ultra-wide camera and a macro camera instead of a regular zoom camera. It has a single loudspeaker, and it doesn’t have a headphone jack.

In fact, the Galaxy S10 Lite is similar to the Galaxy A90 5G in overall specs, so Samsung is simply banking on the popularity of the Galaxy S10 series to draw more attention to this phone. But that’s not a bad thing. The Galaxy S10 Lite is, at the end of the day, quite the power-packed smartphone. The main attractions are the Snapdragon 855 chipset, 4,500 mAh battery with 25W super fast charging, and the latest version of Android out of the box.

And you’re getting all of that for a pretty impressive price. At 649 euros in Europe, the S10 Lite is priced exactly the same as the Galaxy A80 was at launch. In India, the pricing is even more impressive. The S10 Lite costs Rs 39,999 in India, which translates to around 510 euros. That gives the S10 Lite the highest power-to-price ratio of any smartphone Samsung has launched in the country and makes it the first Galaxy smartphone that can truly compete with the latest OnePlus flagships.

As usual, we’ll be able tell you how good the overall package is in our full review. For now, I have a few thoughts to share on the handset after a short time of using it as my primary phone.

Galaxy S10 Lite hands-on

The Galaxy S10 Lite is a pretty big phone because of that 6.7-inch screen, but like all recent Galaxy smartphones, the S10 Lite has a pretty small footprint thanks to the small bezels. And it looks striking from the back, at least on the blue variant sent to me by Samsung India. I am glad that there’s no gradient trickery at work here. The standard dark blue paint job makes for a very classy look. The back isn’t made of glass, by the way, but the phone still feels excellent in the hand.

The Galaxy S10 Lite doesn’t have a headphone jack, which will make it an instant no-no for many folks. You get USB-C earphones in the box, but these are of the mid-range variety as you find on A series phones like the Galaxy A70. As mentioned earlier, the S10 Lite also has only a single loudspeaker. But the 6.7-inch Super AMOLED display is of high quality, and some will like the fact that it’s not a curved screen. The optical in-display fingerprint sensor also seems to work great; it’s actually working better than the ultrasonic fingerprint scanner on the Note 10+ for me.

The S10 Lite’s performance is as good as you would expect from a phone with the Snapdragon 855 and 8GB RAM under the hood. It didn’t stutter or lag much even when I was setting it up and installing apps and restoring data in the background. In fact, the Galaxy S10 Lite is the first Samsung phone I’ve used with a flagship Snapdragon chipset in the last few years, and that will be true for many — if not most — who pick up the device.

And I’m very eager to see how the 4,500 mAh battery holds up. Snapdragon-powered Galaxy phones often show longer endurance than their Exynos counterparts, and even if that weren’t the case, a 4,500 mAh battery should last pretty long, though I will only be able to offer proper figures in our full review. Battery charging should be quick as well thanks to support for 25W super fast charging; a 25W charger is provided in the box.

The rear cameras on the Galaxy S10 Lite are quite similar to the Galaxy A51’s. But Samsung says the ‘Super Steady OIS’ tech sets the S10 Lite apart from the rest. The camera module tilts like a gimbal for improved video stabilization, although I will have to do thorough testing to say just how better it is than regular super steady video recording available on other Galaxy phones, which crops the output from the ultra-wide camera to make it seem like the video is smoother and more stable.

Unfortunately, the S10 Lite has a macro camera instead of a telephoto camera. As we said in our Galaxy A51 review, the macro camera is great if you love taking photos of food and closeup shots of things like flowers and insects. But it is severely limited by the need for you to move extremely close to the subject. The macro camera is no doubt one of the main reasons why Samsung has been able to bring down the price of the S10 Lite, but again, it has limited use cases.

On the software front, the Galaxy S10 Lite runs Android 10 with One UI 2.0 out of the box. Features like Bixby Routines, Edge screen, and Screen recorder are included, but, for some reason, there’s no Samsung DeX for PC support. The Galaxy A90 5G has it, and I hope Samsung will bring the functionality to the S10 Lite with a software update, as it’s perfectly capable of running DeX. Hopefully, security updates will come out regularly as well; Samsung is yet to say if the S10 Lite will get monthly or quarterly security updates.

Samsung discounts Galaxy S10 Plus 1TB variant by a whopping $500

With the Galaxy S20 Unpacked event fast approaching, it seems Samsung is embarking on a Galaxy S10 stock clearance spree. The 1TB storage variant of the Galaxy S10+ is currently discounted by a whopping $500 in the US. The regular price of the Galaxy S10+ 1TB variant is $1,599, but it can be yours for $1,099 right now if you purchase the device from Samsung’s official website.

The best part is that the $500 discount can be extended by another $200 if you trade-in an eligible device, which is applicable to the unlocked model and to the Sprint and Verizon variants of the Galaxy S10+. But if you want to take advantage of the massive discount, you will have to hurry, as Samsung says the deal is only valid till stocks last. And since third-party retailers aren’t offering the same deal, Samsung’s store is the only option you have if you want to save on the top-end variant of the Galaxy S10+.

The 1TB Galaxy S10+ variant comes with 12GB of RAM and has a ceramic back that makes it more resilient. Other specs include a 6.4-inch Super AMOLED Infinity-O display, Snapdragon 855 SoC, a 12MP Dual Aperture main camera, 16MP ultra-wide camera, 12MP telephoto camera, a 10MP+8MP front-facing camera, and a 4,100 mAh battery with reverse wireless charging support. The Galaxy S10+ also has a headphone jack, which can’t be said for its upcoming successor.

You can buy the Galaxy S10+ from Samsung’s official website here.
