J.K. Shin takes a step back from running Samsung’s mobile business

The performance of Samsung’s mobile business over the past few quarters has not been stellar and it’s evident that Samsung needs to do more to preserve its dominant position in the market. J.K. Shin, who has long served as the chief of Samsung’s mobile division, is now handing over the day-to-day running to Dongjin Koh. This was confirmed today during Samsung Group’s annual personnel appointments, Shin will continue to head the overall mobile division and will now be focusing on the long-term strategy as well as on the development of new growth businesses.

Koh was previously the head of mobile research and development at Samsung and has played an important role in the development and launch of the company’s recent high-end devices like the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6. In a release Samsung Group said: “As Koh has a vision and knowledge on the development of solutions and services, such as KNOX and Samsung Pay, he is expected to lead the second leap of the mobile business.”

This change comes at a time when Samsung is working very hard to reverse its fortunes in the global smartphone market amid declining operating profit and market share. It continues to face tough competition from Apple in the high-end segment whereas Chinese and local OEMs are making things hard in emerging markets. It will certainly be interesting to see what changes Koh makes to the strategy of Samsung’s mobile business in a bid to bring up profits once again and increase market share, industry watchers, shareholders and fans of the company alike will be watching what he does very closely.

Samsung rumored to make major camera announcement at CES 2016

We have heard many rumors about the future of Samsung’s camera division, exacerbated by the company’s exit from one European market with the possibility of a similar move in other markets, some even believe that Samsung is going to shut down this entire division and transfer employees to other departments that work on camera technology for devices like smartphones and tablets.

However there a rumor now from “long time Samsung sources” claiming that the company is going to make a major camera related announcement at the International Consumer Electronics Show 2016 in Las Vegas. The convention takes place next month but it’s quite likely that we might get to hear what the company has in store for us, if anything, before Samsung’s press event.

Cheaper AMOLED panels from Samsung expected to deal major blow to LCD in 2016

Samsung already accounts for a significant chunk of AMOLED panel production for small and medium sized devices, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that Samsung has played a major part in making AMOLED more popular, and the step it’s rumored to take next year might deal a major blow to LCD. According to a report out of China Samsung is going to bring down the cost of AMOLED panels by as much as 20% to bring them more in line with the cost of LCD panels.

Cost has remained in issue for OEMs looking to adopt AMOLED panels instead of LCD, Samsung is rumored to be in discussions with several Chinese OEMs that primarily make low-to-mid-range handsets and it appears that to bring those manufacturers on board Samsung will bring down the prices of its AMOLED panels by around 20%. The panels are believed to cost about 30% more than LCD and if Samsung follows through with this in 2016 only a 10% difference will remain thus enabling many OEMs to consider making the jump to AMOLED. Lowering the costs may also prove to very beneficial for Samsung in the long run as Apple is rumored to be considering AMOLED panels for 2018 iPhone, reduced cost may encourage Apple to make the switch from LCD to AMOLED.

Amazon offering the Galaxy S6 for only $399.99

Undependable battery life and multitasking limitations aside, the Galaxy S6 is one of the best flagship Android phones to have come out this year. It doesn’t have the glamour of the curved edges seen on the Galaxy S6 edge, but even after all these months it is still an excellent device that can go head to head with newer phones. Today, Amazon has made the Galaxy S6 even more attractive for US consumers, by cutting its price down to $399.99 for the unlocked variant.

The Galaxy S6 is Amazon’s Deal of the Day today, and the discount is a huge one at $200 less than the regular price. It’s the 32GB variant so media hoarders might not find the deal too attractive; also, only the black version of the device is part of the offer, but then again you shouldn’t really be making too many demands for a deal that may or may not come along any time soon.

Head to the source link to buy the Galaxy S6.

Samsung’s latest patents show scrollable devices, tab style smartphones and more

Samsung has been rumored to be working on a foldable display and a recent patent gives us a whole new concept which is the idea of a scrollable device. Such a device would have two states: a rolled state and an unrolled state. In the first state you would basically have a tube-like device which would give you the ability to pull using a small handle, thus revealing a large display. This would definitely prove pretty useful because you could easily carry the scroll around in your pocket and only pull the screen out when you need it.

An interesting feature of this design is the handle that you use to pull the screen out, which is called a tab. The tab is a mobile part of the scroll and it can either be put up or down on the tube, the latter unveiling your notifications in an elegant manner.

Another way of opening this gadget would be to press a certain icon on the side then when you pull the display out, it would open that exact app.

Another notable patent that Samsung submitted recently is the tab style smartphone which is a device resembling a book. This gadget would basically fold in half with a tab attached on the side with various apps so you would quickly open apps similar to what the previous scroll concept used.

Second-gen Samsung Galaxy A7 to have a 3,300 mAh battery

Until the Galaxy A8 came along, great battery life wasn’t one of the strong suits of Samsung’s Galaxy A lineup. The Galaxy A7, which had a large Full HD display, had to make do with a 2,600 mAh battery that did the job well enough but wasn’t able to offer impressive endurance, but it seems Samsung is looking to rectify that with the sequel to the A7.

We already know most of the specs of the Galaxy A7 2016, and the FCC has now revealed that the handset will feature a 3,300 mAh battery. That’s a giant leap in battery capacity; given how good the 3,000 mAh unit on the Galaxy A8 can be, one can only wonder how long the A7 2016 will be able to last on a single charge. What makes the large battery more impressive is the fact that the second-generation A7 is expected to be only 6.9 mm thick; that’s not as low as the 6.3 mm profile of the original Galaxy A7, but there’s little chance of anyone complaining about the added heft.

The Galaxy A7 2016 will come with a Galaxy S6-like metal and glass design, a 5.5-inch Full HD Super AMOLED display, a Snapdragon 615 processor, 16GB of internal storage, a microSD slot, 3GB of RAM, a 13-megapixel rear camera, and a 5-megapixel front camera. It will run Android 5.1.1 out of the box.
