Galaxy Fold pre-bookings reopen in India at noon today

Samsung will once again be taking pre-orders for the Galaxy Fold in India today, starting at 12 PM. Pre-bookings for the Galaxy Fold first opened in India on October 4; Samsung managed to sell 1,600 units in 30 minutes, which was all the stock the company had for the device in the country. Like before, Samsung will require the customer to pay the full price of the Galaxy Fold while pre-booking it.

India is one of the costliest places to buy the Galaxy Fold, thanks to the price tag of Rs. 1,65,000 (~$2320). The price for the discounted screen replacement in the first year of ownership is similar to other markets, however – Galaxy Fold owners will have to pay Rs. 10,500 (~$148) for the first screen repair/replacement. Buyers will get access to a dedicated expert on call 24×7, and orders will be delivered to their doorstep by a concierge who will help them get their Fold set up and talk them though its highlights and the care it requires in day-to-day usage.

Only Samsung’s official website and offline stores will be taking pre-orders for the Galaxy Fold in India. It remains to be seen how many units the Korean giant will bring to the country for the second sale, but it’s likely to be limited as before so you should be quick with placing an order if you want to get your hands on Samsung’s foldable phone.

T-Mobile Galaxy S9 and S9+ get Night camera mode in latest update

As the global Exynos Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ models begin to receive the October security update, T-Mobile is only just bringing the September security update to the two phones. And, at long last, the carrier is also bringing over the dedicated Night mode for the camera to the S9/S9+. There’s no mention of the camera Night mode in the changelog, but it has been confirmed as being part of the update by users on Reddit.

With the dedicated Night mode, the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ can take brighter, more detailed low-light pictures with better exposure, with the quality of the resultant shots pretty similar to what you get on the Galaxy S10. That’s because all of Samsung’s 2018 and 2019 flagships use the same primary rear camera sensor and hardware. The Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9 just don’t get the ability to shoot Night mode pictures with the telephoto camera.

The update rolling out for T-Mobile’s Galaxy S9 and S9+ comes with software version G960USQU6CSI2 and G965USQU6CSI2 respectively. It’s nearly 800 MB in size, so you might want to download it over a Wi-Fi connection. You can grab the update over the air from the Settings » Software update menu on your phone.

Galaxy S9 October security update released

The October 2019 security patch has been released for the Galaxy S9 and S9+, with an update carrying the new security patch rolling out in Germany. The update comes with software version G96*FXXS6CSI4 and has no new features or improvements, but it is a critical release as the Galaxy S9 was one of three Galaxy devices explicitly mentioned in a report about a serious zero-day vulnerability that has been exploited by attackers.

October update an important one for the Galaxy S9

Along with the Galaxy S9, the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S8 are said to be affected as well. The October security patch should fix this vulnerability for all three phones. Samsung is yet to push out the latest security patch to the Galaxy S7 and S8, but that is likely to change in the next couple of days considering the company isn’t wasting any time in bringing the October update to all of its eligible devices. The Galaxy Note 9 was updated earlier this week, and both the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10 have also been updated in some markets.

The Galaxy S9 update is currently available only for Vodafone customers in Germany, but we should see the unlocked model joining the party soon, and the update should also be making its way to other markets. To download the update on your S9 or S9+, open the Settings app on the phone, tap Software update, then tap the Download and install option. Alternatively, grab the firmware for the latest software from our firmware archive and upgrade your phone manually using a Windows PC.

Key One UI 2.0 features and improvements highlighted, beta still elusive

Samsung was supposed to release the Android 10 beta for the Galaxy S10 today. It emerged earlier today that the beta was going to be delayed. Samsung later confirmed this to us as well. It now expects to release the beta by mid-October.

It could be at least a week before it starts rolling out the beta firmware. However, it appears that at least one device got the beta firmware, so we now have some details about the key features that Samsung is introducing with this major firmware update.

One UI 2.0 features and improvements

The device in question belongs to PhoneArena. It’s a Galaxy S10+ which is now on firmware version G975FXXU3ZSJ6 which brings Android 10 with One UI 2.0 and the October 2019 security patch.

One UI itself was a very significant redesign of Samsung’s user interface when it was introduced last year. It was evident from the beginning that this wouldn’t be the case for One UI 2.0. So there won’t be any major differences, visual at least, when trying out One UI 2.0 for the first time.

As One UI 2.0 is based on Android 10, it brings Google’s new gestures for navigation, which allow you to swipe from the sides and the bottom. The back gesture sensitivity option will help those who use a bulky case that makes it difficult for them to do the Back gesture at the edge of the screen.

Device Care has received an upgrade as well with One UI 2.0. Some of the sections have been redesigned to show the information in a cleaner manner. Accessing the One-handed mode now requires you to swipe down from the bottom of the screen.

The Wireless Powershare feature gets battery percentage limits. You can set any battery level between 30 and 90 percent. When the phone’s battery reaches that level, the PowerShare feature will be disabled automatically. It previously used to do that only when the phone’s battery reached 30 percent.

Some subtle changes have been made to the user interface as well. The native apps have been updated with Contacts getting a Trash option, much like Gallery did with One UI 1.0, to store deleted contacts for up to 15 days before they’re deleted for good.

We expect to hear more about One UI 2.0 in the coming days. Samsung will hopefully be rolling out the Galaxy S10 Android 10 beta sooner rather than later. Like what you see so far?

October security update rolling out to the Galaxy A80 and A8+ (2018)

Samsung has released the October 2019 security update to a couple of mid-range devices in its lineup. The Galaxy A80 and the Galaxy A8+ (2018) have started receiving the latest monthly patch since yesterday. The former model was launched in April this year, while the latter hit the market early last year.

The Galaxy A80 is receiving the update in Peru and Mexico currently, while the update for the older A8+ is out in Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Malaysia.

If you haven’t received the OTA notification yet, go to Settings, select Software Update, and tap on the Download updates manually option to manually check and trigger the update. If that doesn’t yield the desired result, you can also download the latest firmware for these devices from our database and manually flash them. You can find the list of all Galaxy A80 firmware here and the Galaxy A8+ (2018) firmware here.

As of now, we are not sure if the release brings any new features to these models. There is a higher chance of that happening with the Galaxy A80 since it is both a newer and more expensive model. Do let us know in the comment section if you observe any noteworthy changes after installing the update.

Samsung is yet to reveal the security fixes included in the October 2019 update, but a report mentioned that it patches a severe vulnerability in select Galaxy models.

  • Model: SM-A805F
  • Dimensions: 165.2 x 76.5 x 9.3mm
  • Display: 6.7"(170.2mm) Super AMOLED
  • CPU: Qualcomm Snapdragon 730
  • Camera: 48 MP, CMOS F2.0, 8MP, CMOS F2.2, 3D Depth

The Galaxy Fold will be released in Japan on October 25

Samsung’s first foldable smartphone is slowly making its way to more markets across the globe. We have seen it being released in South Korea and the United States so far in addition to markets across Europe. Samsung has also released the device in India.

The Galaxy Fold will soon be released in several other markets across the globe. Japan happens to be one of them. Samsung’s carrier partner for this device has confirmed when it will be releasing the foldable smartphone.

Galaxy Fold is being released in Japan this month

Japanese carrier au will be carrying the 4G variant of the Galaxy Fold. It has listed the device on its website with a notice that the handset is scheduled to be released on October 25. The pricing information has not yet been revealed. We imagine it will be disclosed closer to launch.

It will obviously be around the $2,000 mark. The carrier may offer its own price incentives or deals for the launch so customers may want to look out for that. It doesn’t seem likely for now that other carriers may also offer this device in Japan.

Samsung has been making the Galaxy Fold available in limited quantities across the globe. It has seen considerable demand for the device so far. Some of the other countries where it’s soon to launch the Galaxy Fold include Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, Mexico, Thailand, Spain and Australia.

Are you looking forward to the Galaxy Fold’s launch in your country?

Thanks, J.ito!

Samsung Display plans to invest $11 billion by 2025 on next-generation displays

Samsung Display has announced plans to invest 13.1 trillion won (~$11 billion) by 2025 in R&D and for upgrading facilities. The company made the announcement at a special event that was attended by the Korean President Moon Jae-in and Samsung Electronics Vice-Chairman Jay Y Lee in the city of Asan in South Korea.

Of the total proposed investment, 10 trillion won will be spent on upgrading facilities, while the rest will go towards developing next-generation displays such as the Quantum Dot LEDs. The company will be converting one of its LCD manufacturing lines in Asan to produce Quantum Dot screens from 2021. The upgraded facility will have an initial monthly capacity of 30,000 panels larger than 65 inches, the company said in a statement.

The Korean conglomerate’s display business has suffered in recent quarters due to oversupply of LCD panels and the resultant pressure on margins in the global market, driven largely by the growth of competitive Chinese suppliers. Making matters worse, Apple, one of the biggest clients for Samsung Display, is looking to cut down its reliance on the Korean company for sourcing components.

Samsung is looking to overcome all these challenges through active investments in next-generation displays. The Korean government has also pledged support to Samsung and other local companies to retain their dominance in the global display market.

Unlocked Galaxy Note 10 also getting October security patch in the US

Samsung is moving quickly, and how! The October security update has been released for the unlocked Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10+ in the US, soon after the unlocked Galaxy S10 models were updated as well. Software version N97*U1UES1ASI3 is rolling out to the Note 10 and Note 10+ over the air at this moment.

Like the Galaxy S10 update, the one that is rolling out for the Galaxy Note 10/10+ does not include the same changelog as the update for Exynos-powered models in the rest of the world, which received improved camera quality and stability of keyboard sound along with the new security patch. Not getting the most recent improvements and features on time is standard fare for Snapdragon versions of Samsung’s flagships stateside, but on the bright side, at least the company has not delayed the October patch itself.

The October patch fixes a severe vulnerability that is said to affect some specific phone models, including the Galaxy S7, Galaxy S8, and Galaxy S9, that can let attackers take complete control of a device. The vulnerability has reportedly been exploited by an Israel-based cyber intelligence firm already, and while not all Galaxy devices are said to be affected, Samsung is still hurrying and releasing the October security update for as many devices as quickly as possible.

The carrier-locked variants of the Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+ are yet to get the latest security update, but we will be sure to let you know once that changes. If you own an unlocked Note 10/10+, you can grab the update over the air from the Settings » Software update menu on the phone or upgrade by flashing the relevant firmware that are downloadable from our firmware archive.

Looks like the Galaxy S10 One UI 2.0 beta has been delayed

Many of you have been waiting for the Galaxy S10 One UI 2.0 beta to go live today. Samsung itself confirmed earlier this week that the beta program would be launched “soon.” Subsequent reports suggested that it would be out in South Korea first on October 10.

It appears that Samsung has decided to slightly delay the release of the beta program. That’s what we gather from a notice posted by the company’s representative on the official Samsung community forums for South Korea.

Galaxy S10 One UI 2.0 beta delayed in South Korea

In a message posted on the forum merely minutes ago, the representative reveals that the decision has been made to delay the beta. It was supposed to be launched on October 10 but is now expected to go live by mid-October. Without going out on a limb to give a precise date, we expect to see the beta arrive in the third week of this month.

The reason for this decision is not entirely clear. There may have been some last-minute issues with the beta build which could have forced Samsung to delay the release. Keep in mind that this could only be specific to South Korea. The beta is also expected to go live in the United States and Germany today. There’s no indication, so far, that a delay has been approved for those markets as well.

We’ll continue to keep monitoring the situation and update you as soon as we hear more about the Galaxy S10 One UI 2.0 beta.

Samsung UK is offering a pair of Galaxy Buds free with these smartphones

If you’re interested in purchasing a new Samsung smartphone, there’s a chance for you to score a pair of free Galaxy Buds as well. Samsung UK has kicked off a new promotion whereby it’s offering a free pair of the Galaxy Buds with select smartphones.

As you would have probably guessed by now, this promotion is limited to customers in the United Kingdom. It runs from October 10, 2019, through October 23. Purchases have to be made within this period from a participating retailer.

The free Galaxy Buds promotion is available for a limited time

In order to claim a pair of free Galaxy Buds, customers in the UK have to purchase a Galaxy S10, Galaxy Note 10 or Galaxy A90 5G. The promotion covers all variants of the Galaxy S10 and the Galaxy Note 10.

Once the purchase has been made, customers must claim their free pair from the Samsung Members app. They will find the “Your Galaxy Buds are calling” tab in the Benefits section of the app. They have to upload their proof of purchase here within 30 days of buying the smartphone.

Customers will get an email from Samsung once the company has received their claim and another email when their claim has been validated by the team. It’s only a matter of waiting a few weeks after that. Samsung says that customers will receive their free Galaxy Buds within 45 days of their claim being validated.

As we mentioned in our Galaxy Buds review, they’re solid truly wireless earbuds. This promotion gives prospective Galaxy Note 10 customers an incentive to buy the flagship. Yes, it doesn’t have a headphone jack, so they can get some good use out of the Galaxy Buds on this device.

Galaxy Note 10 Android 10 beta program possibly starting October 21

The Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10+ Android 10 beta program is scheduled to start on October 21, according to Samsung’s customer care representatives. We have received a tip from one of our German readers who contacted Samsung to ask about the Note 10 beta and were told it will go live on October 21. The Galaxy S10 beta will apparently be starting today, October 10, a date that was revealed by Samsung’s customer reps as well.

While we don’t usually trust Samsung’s customer support given their poor track record, the consistency with which they are providing the dates for both the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10 beta programs is a good sign they aren’t giving incorrect information this time around. Of course, it’s also the fact that we’re getting more and more impatient and would believe any info we can get, even if Samsung doesn’t ultimately release the beta on the mentioned dates.

An October 21 launch would support our estimate that the Galaxy Note 10 beta will come out around two weeks or so after the Galaxy S10 beta. There was a similar gap between the Android Pie beta programs for the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9 last year, and it doesn’t look like Samsung is changing things up this year. We’ll keep you updated on any further developments, so stay tuned and keep checking back!

Thanks for the tip, Marcel!

Samsung’s new TV channel counts down to upcoming Breaking Bad movie

Getting impatient waiting for the upcoming Breaking Bad movie? Have a Samsung Smart TV at home? If you said yes to both those questions, then Samsung understands your plight and has launched a custom TV channel for its Samsung TV Plus service that counts down to the debut of El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie on Netflix on October 11. Samsung will hold a special viewing party for the movie at the Samsung 837 store in New York City at 7 PM EST.

While the TV channel will only count down the time left for the movie’s digital release on Netflix, Samsung’s 837 store will not only let people watch El Camino together but also have special “photo installations inspired by the movie’s set pieces including a replica El Camino car” that they can explore. All this hullabaloo about the Breaking Bad movie is part of the Korean giant’s campaign to “bring several of Netflix’s biggest future premieres home with Samsung TVs”, although it’s unclear what exactly the offering here is as all Netflix TV shows and movies are available for viewing worldwide on all platforms at the same time.

El Camino is written and directed by the critically acclaimed show’s creator and serves somewhat as a sequel, as the plot will follow the aftermath of Breaking Bad’s final season and show what Jesse Pinkman, one of Breaking Bad’s most endearing characters, is up to following the series finale, which ended with with Pinkman driving off in a stolen Chevrolet El Camino. Netflix’s official synopsis doesn’t give away a whole lot, and that’s probably a good way to get anyone who’s seen and loves Breaking Bad more excited about the upcoming sequel-cum-spin-off movie. And Samsung is lending a helping hand.

US unlocked Galaxy S10 gets October update without new camera features

Samsung has released the October security update for the unlocked Galaxy S10 models in the US. Unfortunately, it looks like North American customers have once again been left behind when it comes to getting new features. The October update for the US doesn’t include any of the Galaxy Note 10 features that the rest of the world has received in the last couple of weeks.

It’s worth noting that the Exynos-powered models, which are the ones Samsung sells globally, received those Galaxy Note 10 features as part of the September update, with the October update following just two weeks later. The unlocked US models missed out on those features even with the September update, and one can only hope that won’t be the case with the update that comes out next month.

Of course, some customers will already be testing Android 10 by then, and all of the Note 10 features are likely to be included in the One UI 2.0 beta that Samsung will be launching “soon.” The beta program will be available for owners of unlocked Galaxy S10e, S10, and S10+ devices in the US, along with those on T-Mobile or Sprint. The Android 10 beta is also expected to launch in Germany and South Korea in the first phase.

For now, if you own an unlocked Galaxy S10, S10e, or S10+, you can download the 192 MB October update — software version G97*U1UES2BSIC — over the air by going into the Settings » Software update menu on your device. You can also upgrade using firmware that we have available in our firmware archive.
